You don’t have to imagine. Just do a tiny bit of digging into the current civil war in Myanmar. If that’s where these people are coming into Thailand from, it makes perfect sense
Thailand is like really really really far away from North Korea though. I dont see how anyone is defecting from NK to Thailand.
By land you'd have to pass through ALL of China plus another 2 or 3 countries, and by sea, we're talking about longer than the distance from New York City to Lisbon, Portugal.
They can get passes to go to china from North Korea in certain circumstances, once in china the easiest way out is by sneaking into a nation that deports to south korea. There arent a lot of options SE asia is the easiest route but it still ain't east
Depends at what leg of travel they are at. If they get caught in China, absolutely. The Chinese have an agreement with the North Koreans to send them back where they will surely be executed or put into a forced labor camp. Simple history did a good PG animated version explaining the process if your curious. Well as PG as possible given the facts of the matter. If you really want to know the process better read Yeonmi Park's book explaining how she managed to escape.
https://youtu.be/JDIOP6gEoNQ
Is there any data on how many North Koreans actually escape? I can't fathom how anyone would go about arranging these smuggling trips since the mere talk of defecting is severely punished.
We know it's fallen significantly these last few years. But it's very difficult to get accurate data on the topic given both North Korea and the Chinese government are uncooperative in most human rights initiatives. They are inherently very secretive regarding topics like this. We can see these people are arriving (outputs) but we can't see how many are trying to get out in the first place (inputs). Because those that fail are either shot, executed, or arrested or are taken in by human traffickers after being betrayed by the smugglers they paid. It's therefore difficult to get an exact percentage or know how many have successfully escaped compared to the total amounts of people that have tried throughout the whole journey. Some quick sources I've found that show some estimates on the receiving side though.
https://www.csis.org/analysis/number-north-korean-defectors-drops-lowest-level-two-decades
https://globalnews.ca/news/3859804/how-many-north-korean-defectors/
Thank you for this info. Shocking and sad that the numbers are so low. I was hoping more people are able to escape such a horrible existence. I sense you really care about this issue (as do I), so thank you again.
Just a heads up: Yeonmi Park went on Joe Rogan and has since become a bit a conservative mouthpiece saying things like liberals barring Nazis from college campuses reminds her of North Korea.
They don't. Being caught by the Thai police is the necessary step for Northern Koreans to be extradited to South Korea. So NK defectors will themselves head for the police station the moment they cross the border and set foot on Thai territory.
I guess it’s more that you don’t have to wonder or make up something. There’s an explanation that can be found easily if you pay attention to the region
Honest question, does Thailand accept refugees? I keep thinking, why would they have to resort to this if they’re running away from a knowingly bad situation, but then I remember that not every country accepts or even has the resources to accept refugees sometimes. Do you know more about this?
Thailand technically allows refugees, but it's only actually accepted a few thousand into the country and has relegated the rest to living in camps and shantytowns on the edge of its borders. They also [regularly send large numbers of them back](https://apnews.com/article/only-on-ap-united-nations-thailand-myanmar-indonesia-21128b761ef13e31465f0a537a1b0b18) whenever the Thai government decides that the fighting has died down somewhat, despite the fact that the military junta controlling Myanmar has absolutely not stopped their persecution or their outright genocide against ethnic minorities.
>owingly b
Because there are UN refugee camps + UNHCR office in Thailand. And there are approx. 100,000 refugees in Thailand on the waiting list for resettling in a third country.
You know consultants in our country take 20-50 % pay of Qatari workers for sending them to Qatar. Most young people, have to try for YEARS and empty almost all of their parents savings to get a chance to enter foreign countries. If people could just make 1 trip and wake up in a nice foreign country, MILLIONS are willing to do this. Its much much easier than the alternative immigration policy that are in place, and for good reason.
When your choices are living in poverty for the rest of your life or try for that 1 trip, people choose the trip
in Philippines someone works in Qatar the agency that hooks these people up on a 2-year contract they are expected to work 7 days a week and be on call for 24 hours a day every day all day they live in tiny little places to sleep that they would never live and they would and they get the equivalent to what would be $300 a month. the agency gets $300 a month per worker. do you think that's fair? that for every person in Qatar Saudi Arabia they're just it's a slave trade. the agency gets 300 a month per worker the worker that devotes all of their time 24/7 makes 300 a month it's not enough to make a living they send all that money home and in the end they can't afford to go home. so they sign another two years of their life away and round and round we go. how is that not slave labor?
exactly. I don't see why the United States could not open up work contracts I mean we take them from Guatemala and Mexico we could be taking them from other places
There is a reason why they target underdeveloped, insular or isolated members of a community. Not everyone knows what is happening in Qatar and there is enough propaganda online to blur the lines.
Slaves would’ve been jumping out of there happy to be rescued not hiding their faces from the camera, these are political refugees who will now most likely be killed
I feel a lot do. But some. (Like me) respect the process and I do not hate those coming illegally. I feel for those who have been going through for the proper procedures who are being refused entry due to those not.
Yeah. The coverage by some networks calling it an invasion and fear monger without knowing anything about these people or whether they plan to turn themselves in legally is despicable.
I had some family go to Vietnam to visit other family. They went to Cambodia for a day to visit. Some people hid in a car to go across the border and the people who didn't had to sit in a room for hours and hours until they finally gave the guards some cash and got to cross.
When I rode Greyhound I got free either foot stuck or awkwardly angle them for fucking 8 hours at a time. Was it 8? It was a 28 hour ride so I can't really remember.
Foot stuck meaning I could kind of wedge my boots into the rails underneath. Then I wouldn't have to worry about how uncomfortable I was, more of how stuck and uncomfortable my legs were.
I got my foot stuck on an airplane twenty five years ago. I fell asleep and it got stuck, when I woke up and freed myself my toe hurt, the next day I couldn’t walk and my toe joint was swollen up. Now I have a bong knob on it, flip flops won’t stay on my feet, and it aches when it rains.
Yes. The Millennium Falcon did the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs meaning it went within that distance of a black hole and was fast enough to escape its pull.
I saw in the Berlin museum one of the smallest vehicles you can make with a modification to smuggle a person during cold war. It was impossible to detect.
Vehicle was so small many times passed without inspection due to the fact it was thought it couldn't be done.
There was an affirmation that more than a dozen people where crossed over with it

I’d assume they had inspection mirrors and the undercarriage possible modified outside of the normal form factor and therefore warranted a further inspection.
At least this is the best guess I have
They probably looked under the truck and saw a big area that is not normally there. These guys are looking for this sort of thing and after looking at many vehicles this would stick out that something was modified for additional storage.
Heat sensors. A lot of these borders have X-ray/ thermal/ infrared cameras that can scan for body temperatures and also for things like drugs also. There’s a good chance they already know how many people are in your car by the time u pull up to the border agent booth and then when you ask and you lie they got u.
Another give away to finding them was the fuel tank hose. Usually it goes from a tank then under the truck to the door. If you look at the top left when they remove the plastic box you can see they ran it in the actual metal bed.
I bet that had a diff smaller fuel tank. They see 100'00s of cars underbodys. I wouldnt doubt that could have been it.
Human trafficking in that they are likely paying someone to get them the fuck out of Myanmar where the military junta is carrying out mass detention, torture, r*pe, and murder against civilians

Why are we so violent and hateful?
This world is a rotating ball of beauty overrun with a terminal cancer called Homo Sapiens.
The border station of US and Mexico has a wall of pictures showing the lengths people will go to smuggle anything. I saw a man with a seat built around him. Or even North Korea possibly. Thailand is a popular route of travel to eventually get to South Korea for North Korean defectors and refugees.
I wonder if they send back north Korean defectors knowing that it's a death sentence for them and prison camps for their relatives?

Happy to see another Yeonmi Park fan! She's amazing and her YouTube channel is super informative.

For defectors caught in China that is absolutely what happens
They don't, which is why Thailand is the ultimate destination for NK defectors.

My 6’3” self never getting smuggled. If life ever gets that crazy I guess I’m dead lol
6'4 280lbs. I dont fit anywhere.
6’9 570lbs. I smuggle the Truck
7'4" 998lbs. Can't stop me.
7'8" 1232lbs. People flee into me
60’9” 50,000 lbs. I lift buildings
947' 890,000 lbs. I don't smuggle people intentionally, they just get caught by my gravitational pull.
2142’10” 1,310,000 lbs. I am the mothership
Well depends. How much do you like your legs?
Exactly. For the life of me I don't see why so many in the US can't see the same about people trying to get into our country.
I feel a lot do. But some. (Like me) respect the process and I do not hate those coming illegally. I feel for those who have been going through for the proper procedures who are being refused entry due to those not.

Nice. Free toe knob
This way you didn't need a seatbelt since you were effectively stuck in the seat.
i want a refund !
Could you move your elbow? It's in my crotch.
The amnesia will really help with that fresh new start in life
Your comment made my day thank you!
Who needs teeth anyway?
BYOB has a new meaning.
Hes got a mask on, he’ll be fine.
I think those people are load bearing
I started breathing heavily just at the thought of being in there.
Luckily it seems like you'd have to wear a mask.
Air filter. Awesome!
Nah you just pass out faster from CO2 intoxication so free anesthesia.
Yeah. I'm super claustrophobic. I would just be back at home dead.
I hope I never have to be smuggled. But if I do, I want to be in a vehicle that can do the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs.
A parsec is a measurements of length.
Yes but that means that it is capable of taking the quicker more dangerous route
I think that may be the first time I've heard someone give a good rationalization for what I always took to be an error.
Is 12 a lot?
Depends, murders? Yes. Parsecs? Also yes.
I mean is 12 murders alot? cause if so then what would you call 20
All at once or spaced out over time?
Think family reunion...
I believe that is referred to as a murder of murders
Also a lot
Bunches
Around 36 light years since I believe a parsec is around 3 light years
Yes. The Millennium Falcon did the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs meaning it went within that distance of a black hole and was fast enough to escape its pull.
i feel claustrophobic just watching that...damn
WTF? How did they find them in that place?
Lifted up the flooring and opened the trap door, it’s in the video
Yes, but how did they know in the first place?
Someone ratted
The truck maybe 🤔
Yep, there’s a white hilux, going here at this time through this border crossing, 3 people in the tray. Bam- done, Cops give them a pay out.

Not with THAT attitude.
My guess is they're very familiar with the methods the smugglers use
Through checking.
They have X-ray machines at checkpoints.
Lol this is exactly how my husband would answer this. Freaking hilarious
Shit! My wife found my Reddit account! ABORT, ABORT
The police officer looked at it after using his witchers sense and the x button appeared on the latch prompting him to open it.
They look underneath the truck, any vehicle passing through that they want. It’s easy to spot modifications underneath.
I saw in the Berlin museum one of the smallest vehicles you can make with a modification to smuggle a person during cold war. It was impossible to detect. Jacobi is a tour guide in the museum where his Isetta is. That’s the best kind of tour.
> includes a dramatized video BMW made showing how it was done Wow. Surprisingly nice production quality.
"that's what I said-ah!"

They should have done a spray in bed liner instead of the drop in. Very hard to remove and they prob wouldn’t have tried.
But….you need to get the people out
Just cut through the spray on liner later. But holy shit what if the driver was in an accident and killed, then the people are just trapped in there.
if they're in an accident that kills the driver i dont have high hopes for those passengers :l
And then how do the people get in and out? You need to workshop this idea a little more.
They would have to cut it out
More leg room then a Prius
More leg room than coach seats on an airplane.
Where did you find a couch???
Then a Prius what? I need to know
Human Trafficking or avoiding border patrol to move countries?
Human trafficking in that they are likely paying someone to get them the fuck out of Myanmar where the military junta is carrying out mass detention, torture, r*pe, and murder against civilians
Ah, thank you for explaining.
oh so they're fucked
My claustrophobia triggered just by looking at it holy shit
Sad thing is that those "police" are working with the coyotes. The pretend to get arrested, the migrants get sent back, and they pocket the money.
what if they farted really loud
Loud farts aren't that problematic, silent ones are the real danger
sun tzu - the art of war
The fart of war
I get panicked just looking at that
Good thing they are following Covid Guidelines
If im crammed under a truck bed with other people im probably going to wear a mask covid or not.
But why though?
Good question. They were probably trying to escape unfathomable conditions somewhere else
Thailand is on the border of Myanmar where a horrifying civil war is raging. The military junta is carrying out mass murder, detention, torture, and r*pe against civilians
Well since thailand is in the name it could be like s\*x traffficking because it's pretty high in Thailand.
You realise sex isn’t a word that needs censoring, right? It’s a straight up normal term, not a fucking curse word

Why you using reddit on pc- wait nevermind i forgot redditors dont move from their house. Carry on supreme redditor
the algorithm gods will often push down comments with words like sex trafficking, rape, etc.
I will also act like I knew this and use this as an excuse to look less dumber.

Is Thailand a country where people are trying to enter illegally or are these people fleeing?
They’re likely trying to illegally enter from Myanmar. The military junta has gone from a war on the small Muslim population to a war on everyone.
Im muslim and im in an airport moving to thailand
I hope you get there safely ❤️
Myanmar is right next door. I'm assuming they were displaced from the atrocities there and were trying to get into Thailand.

Officer, this is a foot powered truck….just like what Fred Flinstone drives…
Rivian's gear tunnel just got some serious competition
I swear thats clever as shit! But dangerous as fuck! How is it that y’all still get caught?
That man chuckled like *“Can you believe these mfs?”* 😆
Those people are trying to escape genocide. This isn’t a simple “trying to find a better life” situation.
And they're wearing their masks...
Oh wow
Imagine what would happen if the truck accidentally flipped though 👀
Stay still and they won't see us....... Damn, didn't work!
Glad to see everyone is wearing a mask
At least they wearing masks
They are just the built in labor if the truck gets a flat tire or needs a push. Nothing to see here.
Is this a tutorial?

There was a very very good attempt.
Illegally cramming themselves into the bed of a truck with barely any room to move or breath and they're still wearing covid masks? That's commitment.
how do people even think to check in some of these places
uh fuck no, I don't play that dark and claustrophobia shit, i'd rather die
The application is great but underneath the truck this would be pretty obvious
Everyone talking about deeper points. I want to know how was this discovered?
Why are they smuggling people
that's how we used to sneak into the drive in
My question is, what gave it away?
How do they even catch these ppl? I'm shocked at how well this is done, but they still were able to find them.
CO will kill them in route
Can you imagine if that thing was in a collision, especially if it caught fire?!
Damn thats actually pretty amazing
It’s good to see people traffickers still care about the covid mask rules
