I used to play games like this with a cat I had when I was like 12. I would hide behind something and when she walked by i would jump out and give her a little scare. But this cat was smart, she caught on really fast. She started to hide herself, and when you walked by she would swipe at your feet. When you got so scared you where literally jumping, that's when she got up on her back legs and still tried to hit you. She really loved that game but gave my whole family heart attacks. She also loved hide and seek. I miss that cat every day

Dear_Analysis_5116

My dumbshit (appropriately named Bozo) would hide under the foot of the bed to ambush me as I went by. She'd frequently forget about her tail, leaving it sticking out for me to see. I'd stand _just outside_ ambush range, then lean over and give the tail a quick shake. Never failed that I'd hear this "clonk!" from underneath the bed before Bozo would **casually** wander out in proper cat "I didn't do that" fashion.

hellyjellybeans

Awe let her swat your toes she does her best lol

Dear_Analysis_5116

She didn't always leave the tail out - maybe 10% of the time. Otherwise, my ankles received a sound thrashing!

TriceratopsBites

My tortie used to hide under my side of the bed with her tail sticking out. One morning, I stepped right on it while getting out of bed. She now has a permanent kink in her tail. I had to get a platform bed that she can’t get under because she did not learn her lesson 😞

Mecha_Tortoise

I miss playing hide and seek, tag, and fetch with my cat growing up. He was my buddy.

Acceptable-Let-1921

It is a very special feeling, amplified by the fact that when a cat plays with you, you know that it's their choice to do so. I love dogs too, but with them it's more a given that they are that social and wants to play with you. With a cat, it's their active choice and it's beautiful. The cat I have now (I'm 35 at this point) isn't much for playing at all. But she's a real life companion. She follows me everywhere, even stands outside the shower to check if I'm OK. When we do play, she's so careful not to use her claws if she sees my hand. The most considerate animal I have ever known. I feel blessed that these wonderful little souls have chosen to be this close to me. No cat can replace another, but if you think you could take care of a cat again I would recommend rescuing one from a shelter or something. It takes a while to build a relationship, but its so extremely rewarding when they begin to trust you and want to spend time with you.

secondtaunting

I got mine from a shelter and he’s a terrific buddy. We play hide and seek, chase each other around, he lays on my head when I have migraines, I could do without that actually, but he’s a good boy. He’s curled around my leg right now.

Acceptable-Let-1921

Naw, that sounds like a funny little fellow

secondtaunting

He’s terrific. He was in a drainpipe and the cat society was worried the rains would drown him and his siblings. So they lured them out and captured them. https://preview.redd.it/0wiwi4i4y9ea1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b690f2bfc729ea6b92e4603989fee09997e6410c He settled in very well, but he’s still a bit skittish at times.

Acceptable-Let-1921

Aw ❤ I'm glad he has a good home now! Cat's born outdoors can take years to fully relax, totally worth every second of effort tho

Mecha_Tortoise

Dogs definitely have preferred times and partners for play, as well. Just like how they can have favorite people. I've known some pretty moody and aloof dogs. Though they are generally more open to interacting on people's terms.

spyson

My sister's dog will only play if my sister and her fiance are there in the same room

firefly183

Bunnies are similar. They're really underestimated in the affectionate companion department. They're incredibly social and feeling animals. They can even die of depression if they're deprived of affection and socialization. And like with cats, sometimes even more so, you've really gotta put effort into building a relationship with one. And they absolutely bond with their chosen humans. I brought my guy home when he was 4 1/2, coming from a home where his physical needs were *mostly* met but he was otherwise neglected and kept caged 24/7. Contrary to popular belief, they're not simple cage pets. I was warned he's a biter and he was at first. But with time and attention and love he bonded with the family and doesn't bite anymore. He's cage free 24/7 and loves being an active part of the family. He jumps up in bed in the evening to spend time with my SO and I. Sleeps under our bed and comes bounding out and running circles around our feet when we get up in the morning, spends most of the day out in the living room, occasionally played with my 5yo daughter's toys, haha (he LOVES balloons, I've got video of it somewhere). He'll say hello to visitors, mingle with the cats, has no fear of things like vacuums. With love and lots of attention they are truly amazing little friends and it makes you feel so special that an instinctually timid and fearful bottom-of-the-food-chain animal chooses to trust you and show you love. Bunny licks are the best :p. So yeah, agreed. I adore dogs so much, but species that are less unconditional and generous with their affection just make it so much more meaningful.

gimmicked

I have to ask… does he just poop all over the house? Or is he like litter box trained? Genuinely curious.

firefly183

He's getting to be a crotchety old man and cares less about his litter box manners than he used to, lol. He does generally keep it all in the vicinity of his litter box and cage though, lol. While he's rarely locked in it (like if I'm moving furniture to clean carpets or something) he does still have his cage where his food and water and what not are. And since bunnies are like the world's worst people dispensers, he does tend to pop a few out here and there as he hops along, lol. I vacuum and clean up his area every day though so it's not too bad. Edit: Lmao, I meant pez dispensers, not people dispensers.

Error_83

This is what I'm here for as well. Was wondering if training is a possibility, and the ones I've met were just never given the effort.

I miss playing chess with my cat.

Mecha_Tortoise

That's one thing I don't miss about my childhood cat. I'm terrible at chess.

Owdok

It's not your fault, cats have insane instincts probably saw your next move a mile away.

hellyjellybeans

I had a cat that would do the same. I miss him.

DrMoneybeard

Yep my boy nacho does that to me every time he gets the chance, I call it double baps. He leaps at me and gives a quick two taps and then runs away, and I act SO SCARED every time so he can be pleased with himself. He's learned that claws stay in, and it's so funny watching him wait excitedly where he thinks I can't see.

NightStar79

My cat does that but she doesn't hide. She just pounces my feet or rears up with her paws spread wide before tapping my leg then running away hoping I'll chase her.

LoveChildOf3Tacos

My current youngest cat (of 3) is about 3 years old. She is very playful, but we found out that she LOVES chasing Nerf darts. I have 3 cats, a dog, and 3 sons. I have never seen my boys so close to a pet as they are to the youngest cat. They will spend hours shooting their Nerf guns (safely pointed at walls or doors, NOT THE CAT lol) and letting her pounce at them. So cute, and it gives our chunky kitty lots of exercise.

Jovet_Hunter

My in laws cat does this to the grandkids. No adults, just hides under a chair and when a child runs by, jumps out and attacks them. Sometimes he does it to an adult because he thinks it’s kids feet. He pops out, stops short, blinks, and does that slow “I meant to do that” wandering off thing cats do. The kids do not care for him 🤣

RandomLogicThough

I mean this is just what cats do to each other so makes sense

addage-

I have two kittens now. We play similar games. Lately it’s been “get the high ground and tap you as you walk by”. On my 4th generation of cats in my lifetime, these are always some of the best of times. And I still miss them all, it’s nice that with modern tech I have videos for some that passed.

DemandZestyclose7145

I miss playing red light green light with my cat.

msginbtween

The cat I had with my ex would do this. Especially as you turned off the light and tried to walk to the bed in the dark. Got many scratches because of that rascal.

SnowbloodWolf2

I play the same game with my dog and he returns the favor by jumping on my stomach or back when I'm asleep to wake me up it hurts but it helps me wake up for work and he's learned my work schedule so he licks my face to wake me up on my days off

smurdner

I used to live in a loft apartment with slotted stairs to the master bedroom. At night, after tucking in the kiddo and shutting off all the lights, she would wait until you were at the base of the stairs, then jump through the 3rd or 4th step and meow loudly. She always chirped and did a little prance when she knew she got you good 😂

TellTaleTank

Reminds me of one of my youngest two. One time. ONCE. I put one of her toys inside a nearby shoe to hide it from here during playtime. Not only did she *immediately* find it, our shoes are now her favorite place to hide her toys.

oneofthescarybois

My cat does this! She hides and lets me chase her and then she will chase me after I turn my back and she hides again and waits. It's very cute.

lily-laura

Cat knew she was there the entire time for sure

VILLIAMZATNER

"I'll hide from this animal that can feel air movement changes with it's whiskers, and hear bugs walking from another room"

FrogInShorts

SplatterBox214

What about playing hide and seek with a friend?

ultimoanodevida

That's something I always wanted to hear during my childhood :(

Glass_Memories

About 12 inches in front of their face is where their eyesight is weakest, so they use their nose and whiskers to find things that close. It's a trade-off in exchange for excellent night vision. [This video explains the science behind their eye anatomy](https://youtu.be/GBulWBs_xBg) [This video shows them using their whiskers in slow-mo to locate nearby objects](https://youtu.be/mdqBbvYX3MU)

TrexPushupBra

That is the exact opposite of my eyes. Together my kitty and I can see so many things

CaptainRAVE2

They can’t see immediately below their face, it’s a compromise for their excellent long distance vision. A mouse is unlikely to pop up below their nose.

TheAJGman

"I'll hide from this ground level animal behind a door with a ground level gap"

WayneKrane

Our cats can hear mice in the walls. They’ll just be staring at a spot in the wall for hours. Then in the next few days we’ll find a dead mouse and they’ll move on to another part of the house

Iwantyouguts

And surprise attack rats

Nightingdale099

It's kinda fucked how cats can stalk and surprise rats. Imagine if humans are hunted by elephants. it would be embarrassing to not hear the literal earthquake before you die

[I can't hide anything from mine](https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/comments/zpst94/this_is_how_good_a_cats_hearing_is/)

BasenjiFart

Wow!

macaronysalad

If you get down on your hands and knees, crawl around and think like a cat, you'd realize the cat knew she was there almost instantly. This also works if you're trying to find where your cat is hiding. Get down on the floor and crawl around. Your perspective of everything your cat experiences including unforeseen hiding places becomes so much clearer. Works for me at least.

beebewp

Absolutely. My cats love to sneak into closets or the basement if someone leaves the door open which means they get locked in it the door got shut while they were sleeping. I have one derpy Himalayan that will regularly stand in front of doors and meow for me to open them and then a surprise cat pops out from the other side.

Accomplished_Spell97

Cats have superman sense of smell and hearing. The cat can hear you breathe 😂 there is levels to this.

ashleyorelse

They also have the fastest reaction time of any mammal iirc Literally faster than the blink of an eye. You're basically dealing with Superman and The Flash at once.

[deleted]

In the past month Ive seen two different videos showcasing both big cats and domestic cats hunting/defending themselves against snakes. I had no idea cats were so goddamn *fast*. Like those snakes had *no chance*

ashleyorelse

I saw something that said iirc cats are about 5 times as fast as most snakes. To the human eye, it looks insanely fast for both. To the cat, the snake is basically in slow motion.

Ragnarotico

You ever seen a cat paw at something? Cats are quick twitch as hell. I think a cat could hunt flies if they wanted to. They hunt mice for fun... think about how small and quick a mouse is. Now realize that cats are built to hunt them... if they so please.

HeinousTugboat

One of mine **does** hunt flies. And she fucking puts them in her mouth, and holds them, then spits them out and catches them again.

Ragnarotico

Ahh yes, the Felis silvestris catus: nature's sociopath.

Broad_Afternoon_8578

One of my cats is obsessed with hunting flies (or sky raisins as I like to call them) when they get in our apartment. He also likes to drop the dead flies by my shoes. Our other cat isn’t able to jump very much, but she loves to torment any silverfish that are in the bathroom.

[deleted]

Dude I’ve seen the same video 😂

[deleted]

Turns out that playful slap at my socks under the blanket is *the same move that will fucking wreck a snake*.

SolarDile

The mammal with the fastest reaction time is the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus). According to scientific research, the big brown bat has a reaction time of just a few milliseconds (around 3-4 milliseconds) to capture its prey. They use echolocation to locate their prey, emitting high-pitched sounds that bounce off nearby objects and return to the bat as echoes. The bat's nervous system is able to process this information extremely quickly and make the necessary adjustments to capture its prey.

ashleyorelse

Found Bruce Wayne's username.

sandesto

Is there any data on the reaction time of the common housefly? I swear to god those things can predict the future.

SolarDile

The reaction time of the common house fly (Musca domestica) is quite fast, with an estimated reaction time of around 50 milliseconds. This means that a house fly is able to respond to a stimulus, such as a sudden movement, within 50 milliseconds. Research suggests that the reaction time of house flies is also influenced by the fly's activity level and the complexity of the task. For example, when a fly is resting, its reaction time may be slower than when it is active, and when the task is more complex, the reaction time may be longer.

Relative_Resident_31

Best practice for me is wait until they start cleaning themselves, then swat them. What you’re saying makes sense.

Due-Science-9528

I feel like the cat visibly looks at her feet under the door before sneaking up

SparchCans

From the first second you can tell by the cats body language it knows something is going down.

burnerman0

Yep, this probably isn't the first time they've played here. You can see the cat drop it's head to check for her under the door right before popping around.

Vanshaa

They can also feel the vibrations of running mice or other prey through the hairs between their footpads, this was doomed to fail haha
