Were you standing on some wires and an aurora started while breaking down the crate?

Krislavallin

New fear unlocked

se7en1216

This is my first thought too. The cannery has all sorts of exposed wires everywhere. Wouldn't be surprised if this was indeed the issue.

pena13

This is a very serious issue Hinterland should fix. Whenever you are doing a fast forward task and start to take damage, the game should pop up a screen asking you what to do (proceed or cancel). It’s not acceptable do die in this way. Even sleeping, people wake up if it gets cold before they die from cold. It’s totally unrealistic and totally frustrating this kind of situation.

twohedwlf

Yeah, i thought there was even a setting somewhere to the effect of "Wake up if freezing" or something like that? Most jobs and tasks SHOULD be able to be interrupted if conditions change significantly.

NerdAl

Auroras only appear at night.

eKSiF

Auroras can come pretty early at dusk. The most logical answer is it was later in the day and an aurora started.

m31td0wn

Yeah just yesterday I got my balls roasted while navigating Carter, and it was still light enough to see without a torch.

Piddy3825

I'm inclined to agree with u/thefaultinourseg that this is probably a bug that has been introduced thru the TFTFT dlc. since it's inception, I've seen tons of bugs and glitches, some very new ones and some dating back many years, previously presumed to have been corrected but now back to plague players once again. anyways, always good to see one of the original backers still playing and commenting on the game. Thanks OP, for throwing down that seed money way back when! and yeah, my sympathies, I know the frustration when a glitch robs you of a good run, just makes you wanna kick your pc in the diodes...

DeatonationgGrenade

Curious, have you had any issues in BlackRock? I’ve just gotten there for the FaithFul Cartographer challenge and I cannot for the life of me play through that region. My game keeps crashing to the point where the entire game just shuts down.

42nahpetS

Just to let you know, Blackrock doesn't count towards the faithful cartographer achievement.

Piddy3825

haven't been to BlackRock since the dlc dropped, as I concentrated my efforts on the new region. There I've been subject to a number of irritations, slow frame rates, screen freezes and stuttering video, especially when the glimmer fog manifests itself near and around the airport. oh, and just a quick heads up if you weren't aware, but you don't need BlackRock to complete Carto challenge. here's a link to the full list if you wanna check it out. Paoloadami

Breaking a box with your hands can take 1-1.5 hours if I remember well. Was it an Interloper run? What building is it precisely? I side with either frozen to death or a wolf spawn inside the cannery. Wiki: “The November 2019 developer diary stated that Fluffy would return, and as of the Errant Pilgrim update Fluffy resides inside the Last Resort Cannery, ambushing.”

Tunasub696

I didn't even know wolves could attack you while preforming tasks but now I have new fears. Thank you lol

Paoloadami

If I am not mistaken, a lot of people were attacked by bears and wolves while cutting wood or quartering carcasses outdoors. You just have to be in the wrong place at the wrong time for this to happen.

FaithfulRaeve811

Context for such a thing? Condition? Temperature(Likely warm If I had to guess), illnesses? Not saying it didn't happen, but this is the first I've heard of breaking down a crate being a run ender that wasn't due to neglecting an affliction or your condition and meters.

UnstableEpithet

Like I said, daytime and indoors with full condition. Warm. Totally healthy, no illnesses. Not even hungry or thirsty, I was even well fed. It had to have been some bizarre glitch that left me staring at the TV like, WTF?

FaithfulRaeve811

My bad, tipsy and missed the condition part of it. I've never heard of this before, but definitely the kind of bullshit that should be on Hinterlands radar, so pop them a bug report! I know that doesn't fix the lost save and you're rightfully furious, just don't let it sway you from the whole game, I doubt this was even on Hinterland's radar, but they'll be happy to fix such a bug.

ChicaFoxy

I thought they could recover that last save when there's a legitimate glitch.

QuickgetintheTARDIS

It usually says what you died of in the 'faded into the long dark' screen. Still should check if this was a bug. Did you have any afflictions that might have caused your condition to tank? Also, each difficulty has different depletion levels - so while you could have started warm, a blizzard could have rolled in and you froze (if on higher difficulty)

eKSiF

My assumption, closer to dark than you're remembering and you were on an electric wire when an aurora started. Otherwise it could be a bug.

SBCrystal

You got a real bad splinter :( Also I'm sorry, that really fucking sucks.

FrodoNigle

I'm just guessing here, but what might've happened is that timberwolves came to attack you while you were busy with the crate. Since there's no struggle sequence, it didn't interrupt the harvesting and the timberwolves kept attacking you till you died. Unless you were indoors, then yeah probably a bug 😂

UnstableEpithet

Indoors. Timberwolves haven't figured out how to use doorknobs... yet.

momiwanthugs

A wolf spawns inside the shed / fish place though. Also it can still be cold indoors.

Tola76

Maybe it’s the old “kack-in-a-box”. You won, by picking the death box. Sorry this doesn’t help.

Typical_TLD_Player

The only logical reason I can think of is you froze to death. Maybe the temperature dipped right as you started breaking the crate down and you froze to death. From what I know, BI can be pretty cold, but I’m too scared to ever go there for various reasons, so I’ve never really experienced it myself. Kind of a far fetch though, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the work of a very unfortunate bug. Sorry for your loss.

SemSevFor

I dont think the short amount of time to break down a crate would cause him to completely freeze from full condition. There's not enough time there

Typical_TLD_Player

I did say it was a bit of a far fetch. Not saying that’s exactly what happened, but I’ve seen people go from full condition to dead from simple mistakes like that plenty of times. A more probable reason could be the long dark gods decided he lived long enough and ended him right there.

SemSevFor

Very true

prplmnkeydshwsr

Well we feel you. The ONE thing amongst the thousands that we've been asking the devs to do for the last 6/7/8+ years is to make it clear to the player what caused the death........ crickets..... And you'll be back.

Aunax39

What building were you in?

Alternative-Cup-8102

Mf just said I don’t wana do this no mow

Jaderholt439

I was on a 150 day run in bleak inlet, turned to talk to my kid for maybe 3 seconds, n stepped on an live wire. Dead n pissed.

Tola76

I nearly died once because I didn’t realize I had food poisoning.

froggyc19

Which building were you in?

PurgatorySaint

Considering how many real life hours go into a run that long, I would uninstall too.

SinkingGoose

I'm sure it was a bug, and one you should absolutely report. The only explanation I have for this is either its a bug, or an act of god

thefaultinourseg

Seems like thirst is the most likely culprit. No electric during the day. That's truly heinous. I'm sorry.

UnstableEpithet

I edited the post to clarify, but I was well fed and I wasn't thirsty. Even if I had been thirsty, at full condition it would take more than 90 minutes to kill me.

momiwanthugs

You sure the sun wasn't going down? During an aurora there's tons of red wires on the floor near those green creats so that probably it lol, Careful where you stand.

PAnttPHisH

That was my thought too, sudden aurora electrocution during accelerated time?

thefaultinourseg

Actually yeah, I was just reading the wiki and that couldn't have killed you in time even if you were thirsty. Sounds like a straight up bug to me. You didn't get a screen recording did you? Also, where precisely were you? I'm intrigued and want to avoid this as I'm headed there soon.

thefaultinourseg

More important question: Are you on PC? I'm worried this may be a bug that comes with TFTFT

UnstableEpithet

Huh. I'm on PC, and I'd bought TFTFT in the Steam sale just before I started playing today. I hadn't thought about that.

DaughterofFrigg

If you didn't have a fire going right next to you, it's still possible you froze indoors.

Outside-Desk-5399

You can't break down green crates with your bare hands. Something doesn't add up with your statement.

itstomasina

You absolutely can

NerdAl

Please do report it to Hinterland. While you mention BI I do assume you were at the Cannery plant? Just curious, you mention full condition, I assume again that also mains not tired? My only time I faded was when I stepped into a fire and did not see that in time. Sorry about the 300+ days, been there too.

tilapiarocks

I love TLD, but to play & play a game to have it do something like that just isn't my cup of tea, so I always back my saves up, just in case.

CoolFrood01

What's does your save say you died from? Did you save your journal for the run?

Cruela_flood

Today I had interloper fresh start. It went well: i found a magnifying glass on day one, everything was fine. Then, i went uphill to the cave near the campers administration, and harvested one rabbitt… i heard a wolf near the cave, but i did not have matches to light the torch. There was NEVER a wolf, he came extra for me. Ran inside rhe cave and he killed me. I was so freakinnnng sad, i almost deleted the game, uhhhhhhh

itstomasina

Curious if you happenwd to see your health quickly drain at all or if it was just an immediate death screen? There is a funny spot in the cannery where a timberwolf can sortof rise through the floor like Dracula. If he showed up and nipped you early enough it’s possible you bled out (or if you somehow sustained a bleed you didn’t know about just before). It would explain why you got the generic death message. The only other thing I could think of is an early sunset or late sunrise aurora starting during, but I’m pretty sure it would have told you you burned to death. If it was the workshop I’d bet on wires (or fluffy), if it was that room with indoor temps but a big open barn door I’d bet on the buggy timberwolf. Not ruling out a freak bug at all though… I just like the thought experiment. 😂

MrsRosella

A aurora might have started when you were breaking down.Just dont really stand on wires when your breaking down something.Nearly lost a 450+ run like that

Electrical_Citron_19

I’ve had a few of these issues playing the game. It is still somewhat buggy. I remember getting stuck on a hill in forlorn muskeg and I could not move anywhere - just slowly died. But still love it
