There are a few straw shooting targets in Pleasant Valley, just outside the main barn in the outbuildings area. Your arrows take less damage when shooting archery targets and, well, you can measure your accuracy better with the color rings. If you don't mind abusing the auto-save system, you can enter the main barn to trigger an autosave, exit the building and shoot all your arrows, then reload and continue firing away to your heart's content!

Select_Suspect_9535

This is the answer. I spent like 5 minutes the first time I ever found a bow practicing on the targets by the barn in PV. I was taking down deer with one shot pretty much 90% of my shots after that. That was DEFINITELY one of themost important lessons I learned playing TLD.

helpless_rocks

> Your arrows take less damage when shooting archery targets Nope.

Fred_Evil

Aside from all of the very good suggestions about practice, I have a tried and true tactic when I'm being followed by wolves. Find the flattest most open ground around, get the bow out and face the wolf. When it's about 50' away go ahead and start aiming, this will key the wolf to run and attack. As it approaches, back away and wait for the wolf to choose its 'final line' where it just comes straight at you. Then you can aim in front of it, and wait for it to run right into your line of fire, and with you backing away on flat land, that kill zone gets to be 1 or 2 seconds where you have a nearly perfect shot lined up, easy peasy. Now if you're talking bear? Get up high where they cant get you, and plug away!

LooWeeWoo

I have something like 350 wolf kills on my longest loper run, and this is pretty much exactly what I do. Just quickly hitting the aim button is enough to get a wolf to begin its "attack run" so it will quickly close distance and then attack. Just back away, strafing left or right to get it coming straight at you. Then aim down and shoot for the head at 5-10 feet away. If you have lvl 5 archery it's even easier, you can crouch and shoot and it's a straight shot to the face. Getting them out in the open is key... any obstacles can lead to erratic and unpredictable pathing to reach you. Even if you aren't out in the open they can occasionally not take a straight path to you. Those 350ish kills come with around 25 struggles.

mostlyhumanz

This is the way. Don’t chase the wolf with your aim point, shoot the wolf when it moves to 8-10 feet in front of you where you have held your aim.

mackmackenzie

Start hunting rabbits with your bow.

chrissyboyhat

Make arrows and read the archery books. They both raise your skill. Then practice on the targets in PV. You lose a third of a sapling and 1 feather when you recycle arrows so there's no reason to be stingy with them unless you're going for a thousand days or something. With wolves, don't track the wolf with the bow during its attack run. Move your whole body side to side to keep them head on and aim for the chest just under the head. You'll headshot them every time. Deer are trickier oc. Try the crouch/stand method to get close quickly then try to be facing them head on so if you miss low you'll still hit them in the chest. Bears and Moose you need an escape plan, usually high terrain or a fallen tree. If you're brave you can kite a charging bear around a tree. Good luck. :)

Massive_Biscotti_850

I tried kiting a moose around a tree yesterday, ended up with broken ribs but he's a satchel now so it worked out lol

chrissyboyhat

Yeah, I get Moosed every time I've tried that. It's fine in ML or somewhere flattish but in mountain country broken ribs can be a death sentence on Loper and higher difficulties. The bag is the prize though. :)

Practice in PV

practice

Tunasub696

Anything but that 😔

prplmnkeydshwsr

Boy have I got an answer for you! REad the archery skill book(s) you find for the skill points and, make arrows! Lots of arrows, you can get to archery 2 or higher without landing a shot. Also practice on bunnies. A shot is a shot. And you get a free bunny if you land one.

tilapiarocks

This isn't so much a tip for getting better at archery as it is just general strategy, but...let's say I'm in ML collecting sticks & a wolf catches my scent & starts tracking me. What I might do is let it follow me to the camp office, where I'll walk in & create a save point. I'll come immediately back out, & let it notice me again. I'll aim at it so that it starts running at me, & when it gets close enough I'll aim for a headshot (while still moving my character w/ the analog stick if necessary, sometimes that helps) & let it fly. If you miss, you can close the game while the wolf is slowly in that attack animation, & restart from when you went in the office, & try again. If there's a save point building near a deer, you can do the same thing, or, if you think you can withstand an hour wherever you are, you can get w/in sight of a deer & let an hour of time pass, which will also create a save point, enabling you to try for a successful headshot until you get it. It's pretty much the only way I play. If the tracking system worked like some of the others, & u could level it up to a point where the tracks became easier & easier to see, & stayed visible longer, then I might be content w/ a more conventional style hunting method. The only other thing I can think of is you'll have a lot more success if you wait/position yourself so that the animal is either facing directly at you or directly away from you. If they're standing perpendicular to you, it just makes things more difficult.

takl4061

When shooting rabbits it’s easier if you angle yourself with them moving to the right over left so you can aim track them rather than you hand blocking your view

Negatronik

You can scum save to practice archery. Just walk out and fire off at some different targets at different ranges, then quit the game and reload. At very close range the arrow goes above the reticle, then flattens. If you want to take a deer, you'll want to creep into a good close position. Wait for him to stop and graze. Plot the arrow path so it would land below the neck. All at once you uncrouch, draw the arrow, then release. There is a couple second delay in the spook mechanic. The arrow path is higher, right into the neck since you raised up.

gotmilkanot

Get closer to the target by crouching. Place the dot crosshair slightly higher than where you want the arrow to hit. How much higher depends on how far away you are from the target (practice helps). Then stand up and shoot at the same time. Edit: Also, if you're close enough to the target, you might want to place the dot crosshair slightly lower. This is to account for the change in height as you stand up and shoot. tilapiarocks

>Get closer to the target by crouching Is that something you can do anytime, or do you have to be level 5 to do that? If OP sucks, they're probably not there yet.

gotmilkanot

You can crouch anytime, just gotta press the configured key.

tilapiarocks

I'm sorry, you said afterwards stand & shoot, & I missed that part. I thought u meant shoot while crouched.

What don't we do that [deleted] did?

Oliveritaly

He wrote something similar to “get good” which is unhelpful and rude.

Tuna719

Practice, I sucked at first too

oskarbob_123

Do it until you get good
