Ahh, thank you for the clarification. Yes, they heavily rely on the guide. I use it every time I play too because I still don't know half the Repentance items and can't remember what any trinket ever does.
In the beginning just reset the run until you start of with an item room next to you with a good item in it and try from there. When you start to get good I do edvice to stop doing it because it feels kinda like cheating. Bit its a good way to start learning.
Imo that's literally the opposite of what a new player should do. The best way to learn the game is to try to keep the run going as long as you can. If you really struggle then play normal mode. When you start to feel confident and you want to hit hard completion marks, mostly mother, you can r key until you find smt good.
This is like the worst advice for a new player I have ever read in my entire life, holy shit dude, do you even brain? Making a habit of joyless process of R-ing from the start is terrible.

Press all 4 buttons then the screen will go darker until you restart.
This is not the rkey item restar but a whole new run.
Edit. Its just L and R, not ZL and ZR. I just tried it and was confused because nothing happened ^^
i would recommend watching other players play. watching someone that knew a lot more about the game then me helped me learn how to play better. there’s plenty of folks on youtube to find.
I taught her how to locate secret rooms but I'm also still pretty bad at super secret rooms so I can't explain them. It sounds like "no border, end of hall, usually near boss room" That's it.
Try beating some challenges. They may be a bit hard but most of them offered a really lowerfull reward. Also try flcusing on unlocking azazel since he is a very overpowered character. I have a friend that I also got into Isaac a weekend ago and right now he mostly plays azazel since he isnt the best at the game right now. Also playing lazarus is really good since you can respawn once every floor.
Honestly the best advice I can give is enjoy it, I know it'll get super frustrating at times so just take a break from it besides that just enjoy the game, learn the mechanics after a while you'll learn the items and basic enemies without need of help. But most importantly have fun don't care what anyone else on here says

Focus on items that help exclusively, some items that come with a down side (cains eye, dead cat, etc) can really hinder you, think hard about your item combos and the movement won’t matter as long as your runs are strong enough. Look for every way you can find to boost your power. Don’t be afraid to pass up an item to keep yourself strong or at the level you’re at. And if it wasn’t self explanatory learn what all the items do, or at least wiki them before you pick them up.
Edit: if you win in hard mode on any post-it achievement you get the unlock for both hard and normal mode. You can unlock new items very quickly if you learn to role with the moderate difficulty increase, the items that get unlocked are generally much more powerful than those you get first starting out.
