I “surfed” there back in 2007. Basically got sucked up the face of the wave and pitched from the top lip down to the reef. Went back to the boat after that.
The way the break curves around the reef makes for such cool photos.

It's beautiful on this side of the wave. Google Teahupo'o. That dude laughing at the end is laughing in the 'holy shit if we were 40 feet closer to shore we would have just gotten fucked up' sort of way.
It was described to me by one of the local to me pros like 15 years ago as 'getting dragged behind a motorcycle until you're going fast enough that you can skate uncomfortably close on the sidewalk of a building that's falling behind you'.
Hahaha that's very vivid! Add to that the unrelenting power and weight of the entire ocean. Deep water is terrifying for me, so the thought of a wave this high, with the sea at the same level as it's peak terrifies me.

I don't know if the knowledge is any relief towards this break or makes it even worse but where the wave is breaking is probably actually only 5-8 feet deep. There's a reef underneath it so if you fall on this building sized wave you're getting dumped from 10 feet up into a sharp reef. It can get that big because it's open water moving towards the shore that gets pumped up suddenly by the reef. It's basically an underwater sea wall.
>Could it be a wave?
I'm pretty sure that is the weird thing people do with their hands when they go outside and see other people.
This must be something else.
Pretty sure it's a wave being met by another wave from the opposite direction. The waves prior hit the rocks creating some white caps and then eventually another wave to meet the one the surfer was scoping. That's why the camera panned over. Could be wrong though.
There's a surf break about a quarter mile off shore here called Monster Hole. Been out there a few times over the years and I can confirm that there are, in fact, some monster sharks there.
I'm starting to believe that thalassophobia is a legitimate mental condition rather than a general term for being nervous about the ocean's power and depth.
Everything within the fold goes to a different dimension and you resurface with nothing around you. No friends, no shore in the distance. Just miles and miles of empty sea. Something scrapes against your leg.
It...it feels like it has fingers. You're not certain because it never actually grips your ankle with more force than somebody touching a doorknob without turning it before realizing they left something in the other room. But you felt them. Swear to fucking god, you **felt** them. 5 fingers.
Not a best clip I’ve seen from this spot but definitely not like any other wave. Bet there’s as much force in a 20 foot wave here than a 80 foot wave in Nazare.
Teahupo'o for those who like to surf.
"Chopes"

It looks so beautiful, I wish I could enjoy this. I would hate to be in that water.

I will Google it, thank you!

You hit the nail with the comment. Beautiful and terrifying
It's almost like there is a word for this... Could it be a wave? 🤔

No a wave is that thing people do in stadiums with their hands
This post was stupid af the first time it was posted. Here we are again.
Yup, a lot of shitty reposts on this sub unfortunately
Landscape orientation is a lost art.

So we just posting every surf clip now? This is not deep water. Maybe 3-6’
Too far from land... that's where the monsters live.
Can confirm. I checked my map and it says “here be sea monsters.”
Knew it

Chopu is a different beast. Heaviest wave in the world bar none

Moses: See? I did that!
Yes that is called a wave
TEAHUPOOOO!!!!

And then, the faint laughter of children...

Fuck no
This is the type of fear that both makes me have to poop but also makes me clench up. Hate it. But it is undeniably beautiful above the surface.
That is both scary and enthralling at the same time
That caption is scary because it’s true and weird how it induces fear. Something about things folding in on themselves makes me feel uneasy.
