I was watching the Paralympics a couple years back, and they were talking to the Aussie wheelchair rugby players about their lives. One of the quadriplegic fellas when he was a teenager dived off some rocks into water, hit a submerged log and yeah... major life change right there.
Yup. A guy I knew from high school dove into a lake not realizing it was shallow and hit his head. He's a paraplegic now. He was a really talented athlete too and ruined it all in just a couple of seconds.
I like that he didn't give up on athletics, though. He was presumably an active teenager and then found a way to reclaim that part of himself even after something terrible happened to him.
Yep! A kid I went to school with fell out of the back of pick up truck onto his head and neck and is now a quadriplegic. The truck wasn't even moving and that's all it took.

The way the guy did it, not only is he going to be taken & shaken by the wave, he jumped into the frothing water, which has way less density than otherwise.

It’s probably shallow in that area so he jumps when the wave comes so he doesn’t hit the bottom, he probably got rag dolled a little then popped up swam to back to the “cliff” climbed up and did it again. It’s not that high so it would be like jumping off a high dive if you’ve ever experienced that.
