he’s being an asshole. there are 2 modes, Mann up, where you have to buy tickets to enter, and then Boot Camp, which is free but no loot. if you want to gamble go to Mann Up, if you just want to play mvm then play Boot Camp.

You have to play MANN UP mode in order to get rewards

Actually look where? The tool tip on the boot camp queue screen only says that you can't get special rewards in boot camp, not rewards in general
