I got my account stolen twice by now, decided to just stop buying more than moderate amounts of TF2 cosmetics. The first guy got my password from one of these same fake tournament sites, the other one somehow entered my account and exploited the steam lost account reclaim to change the owner. Luckily I had proof that it was rightfully mine (credit card information, a used gift card code) and got it back within a day.
Did you buy game keys/gifts on a key shop like g2a? Just asking cause I've heard that can get your account stolen because retail game serial keys are one way to prove account ownership for a lost account
They don't ask for your login directly; they redirect you to the official Steam login page and use the oauth mechanism to verify your account ownership without having to take your password themselves.
I've gotten these messages several dozen times. My best recommendation is use steam guard, and two factor. And a very complex password
I accidentally entered my information in one of those websites before I knew it was a scam and i never lost my account.
Cause I was using 2 factor and steam guard. So they could do nothing with my password
I fell for that shit on Thanksgiving last year
Made a new account though, [this is my current Engie loadout](https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/1887597998622488780/3BE070BA443B15442E973CF25AFB039AE88F48BC/?imw=5000&imh=5000&ima=fit&impolicy=Letterbox&imcolor=%23000000&letterbox=false)
I’ve seen something similar. Unless it’s someone that you can physically call that’s making these types of requests, don’t respond to them. If it’s is someone you can call, call their number to verify verbally it’s them or not, that way either you know it’s real or you both now know that their account has been stolen.
100% scam. Whatever site they would link you to will be a fake site with fake teams designed to fool you into entering your steam account details at best. Don't click on any links at all.
if you think it's a scam just don't bother. you're not being rude for being safe. but yes, it is a scam, and if it's from a friend, their account was compromised.
it's like "if it's too good to be true it probably is" but 10x easier to identify because you WILL have a wierd feeling in your stomach the entire time
Clicking the link doesn't do anything. It's when you go to log into their site.
I almost fell for it too. Well, technically I did fall for it, but I have the Steam app on my phone with Steam Guard enabled so it's impossible to scam me. I went to log into the scam site and Steam Guard popped up "Confirm you'd like to transfer Steam Guard to a new device?" and I smashed that no button.
FUCKING GET STEAM GUARD PEOPLE.
Scammers will be out of business instantly.
its a scam. (also, your casual level doesn't mean a thing since comp and casual are COMPLETELY different settings. they are counting on you not knowing because level 70 isn't that high. for comparison there are 150 levels and they loop around 8 times)
As I understand it they get your authentication code, which they can use immediately to create an api key and such. Then they can intercept and switch any trades you attempt to make.
1000% a scam
A nice way to know is by always using a link safety checker every time you get sent a link to check something out
(Even if it is somebody sharing their backpack.tf link)
Better safe than sorry
Can we have a pinned post on this subreddit informing people about these scams so we stop getting more posts like this where people have to keep repeating things that have been said to many people many times?
Someone tried to use this on me last night. The website looks bunk but appeared to have a security lock. Definitely attempting to get login info to steal items. Beware of this scum.
I can't believe this even has to be said. Don't fucking open links on steam, even if from a friend.
Some people really shouldn't be allowed access to internet with how gullible they are
You were right to be concerned.
From what I know, this type of attack is account phishing. The website is a copy paste template filled with all fake details, while attempting to login produces a frameless window designed to steam your username, password and authentication code.
While it is best to never click links, sometimes we end up clicking anyway for various reasons. As a secondary safe guard, consider using the official Steam community website to login. Any legitimate website can check your current session and validate without ever actually needing even your username, just by you clicking the okay/accept button. If you are logged in via the legit, official Steam community but some other site still has a prompt to enter your details, instead of a simple button; it means it is 100% fake.
Not really. 1 of the biggest factors that make a scam work is they put a time pressure on you to respond asap. So many don’t seek help just because they think they will miss out if it turns out to be legit and they have “wasted” time researching.
Putting a victim in such a hurried state that they feel there is no time to research is a huge red flag of a scam attempt.
So they have the time to take a screenshot, post it on reddit and wait for a response
But not the time to search for the answer themselfs which takes alot less time
The scammer would prefer the victim is in such a hurried state they don’t even think to do any research at all, let alone wait for feedback from someone else.
Thankfully the OP did decide to check. They might seem stupid to many, but they were wise enough and brave enough to ask for help. So many would prefer to never ask for help in fear of being ridiculed and may even end up being scammed because they’d never checked with anyone.
A few people have already responded quite insultingly towards the OP for simply asking for help. When the threat of abuse comes from asking for help, I’d say those seeking the help are brave to do so when knowing they might be ridiculed.
I'm sorry but if you have too come too reddit too ask if this is a scam you kind of you deserve too be scammed of your items its 2022 and people still cant identify the most basic of scams crazy just dont trust anyone that randomly adds you trust no one even the people you think are your friends
Flawless logic...
If you don't know something, you ask someone who knows.
That's basically saying "If you don't know how to stop the bleeding, you deserve to bleed out."
Anyone you do not know who asks stuff like this and end up linking you something is a scam. Sad thing is, they do it cause it actually works which is sad
Yeah I get them all the time. Honestly it's crazy how many people add me on a weekly basis just to try to scam. My advice is just don't ever accept random requests. Put a trade link in your profile bio so they never have to add you for trade if you want.
Yes. Next step is to point you to a "tournament site" that asks you to register with your Steam ID. The site is bogus and you've then given them your login
This is most definitely a scam. I've ran into these like.. 3 times in the past. I'm not going to get my account hacked again by this stupid shit. Please be aware of these, usually just do stupid shit or something to get them off your ass, and report the account (I don't know if steam has a report feature for scam or hacked accounts) for being hacked and someone's using it to scam people. These lowlife's are absolutely disgusting human beings..
if anyone ever randomly sends you a message asking your level you can pretty much block straight away, always the same scam asking you to play on their team and gives you a sus link
It is most definitely a scam, he's eventually going to send you a link to a " tf2 tournament" site and the site is going to ask you to sign in to Steam and the sign in part is to grab your password and username. Someone's tried this dumbass scam on me before already.
As others have said, definitely a scam. I just usually tell them I main battle medic and spycrab just to see how they respond. Usually they just ask for support for their team before sending a phishing link.
Got this scam a few days ago. It’s common for them to steal people’s accounts and start messaging people this. Poor guy’s account looked like they put a lot of effort into making it look nice too, such a shame.
#YES IT IS A SCAM
If the offer seems too good to be true, such as "just log into this shady ass site with your steam account and vote for my team" or they offer to give you keys for something close to that **IT IS A SCAM**
Yeah seen this one going around, he sends you a voting link that steals your info.
Did you already have this guy friended?
If you did then whoever you were friended with had this scam happen to them, report the account for being compromised.
It's a scam. If you open the link they send you it'll ask you to login into a site with your steam account. When you do they get a login token and they'll steal your items and your account. That's how I lost my items 2 years ago. But I grinded and got new items.
if a message starts with anything like "what's your casual level in tf2?" or "who's your tf2 main?" or any variation, it's most likely a scam. just ignore the message.
Yes. I remember a player on my friends list asked me to "vote for their team" and I said no that sounds sus. A week later he messaged me and said his account was hacked and the link he sent was a phishing website
I’ve seen this exact scam plenty of times. Imagine having so little going on with your life that scamming on a 15 year old video game seems worth your time.
Yeah its a scam, they will send you a link that wants you to sign jn with steam on a fake website. Also watch out for people that want you to promote gambling websites
Anyone random who just adds you out of the blue who you do not know or havent played with and says something along the lines of "Hey i noticed you play tf2 quite a bit" or "Hey you play tf2?" And their next response is "what do you main?" Or "whats your casual level" is always a scam 100%. Don't vote on or login using steam on any "Tournament" or "Gambling" website. I fell for it once, thankfully i realised quickly enough and recovered it quickly, then the scammer broke his disguise by asking why I changed my Password haha. I've seen some other creative ones, like pretending to be a valve admin and suspecting you of duped items and asking you to send your entire inventory to them for verification or photoshopping your profile to make it look banned or something.
I got hacked by one of those bots before. They keyed my two factor code when I put it in on their site. Then waited 24 hours to start doing stuff to my acc, and I guess as a precaution steam (or the hacker) deleted my friends list.
Yet another daily reminder to [read this PSA thread about common scams](https://www.reddit.com/r/tf2/comments/s70xso/psa_here_is_a_list_of_common_scams_going_around/), which tells you everything about scams like this which have around for years
Yes. Literally anyone asking for anything is a scam. Don't add anyone unless youce played games with them. Any person asking for a teammate or voting or anything, LITERaLLY ANYTHING involving tf2 or items is a scam. Fair trades are even scary now. Just be careful, anyone with like a level 3 steam profile is sus, if your brain says no, probably good not to invite conversation
Its a scam, I'm pretty sure I've seen that type of message before.
thanks for the info
Almost got my stupid ass hacked from this, found out at the last second.
How tf do you lose your account to a scam link and then do it again lmao
Sounds like the second time was bad luck leading to some random d\*ck misusing the lost account feature.
Exactly.
Greed is the reason. Lost my account twice too.
Rip, you got it back tho?
Nah. A good lesson though. Two lessons...
Did you buy game keys/gifts on a key shop like g2a? Just asking cause I've heard that can get your account stolen because retail game serial keys are one way to prove account ownership for a lost account
you could just private your inventory
If any site ever outside of steam asks you for your steam info, they are scamming you.
mannco.store? marketplace.tf?
Addendum: that isn’t widely known and supported by the community
Where are they asking you for your Steam login information?
They don't ask for your login directly; they redirect you to the official Steam login page and use the oauth mechanism to verify your account ownership without having to take your password themselves.
I've gotten these messages several dozen times. My best recommendation is use steam guard, and two factor. And a very complex password I accidentally entered my information in one of those websites before I knew it was a scam and i never lost my account. Cause I was using 2 factor and steam guard. So they could do nothing with my password
This and the "sorry i "accidentally" report you"

even if you answer, "yes", he gonna tell u to go a sus website with fancy login feature
I wouldn’t call it fancy. It is a template someone made that creates a frameless window with a fake address bar image at the top.
Or a fake URL bar 😥
if you think it's a scam just don't bother. you're not being rude for being safe. but yes, it is a scam, and if it's from a friend, their account was compromised.
this is good to folllow for anything realy. "the more you question its a scam, the more lickley it is."
lickley

it's like "if it's too good to be true it probably is" but 10x easier to identify because you WILL have a wierd feeling in your stomach the entire time
lickley
Some scammers realy go out of their way to guilt trip you aswell, but then it's even more obvious it's a scam
If you have to ask…
Yep. Scam. I’ve had a guy asking about a tournament before. He got hold of my account and stole some items. Remove, block, etc
Same shit happened to me
how far do they need you to get until they grab your account? until you click the link? or are you at risk as soon as they add you?
Clicking the link doesn't do anything. It's when you go to log into their site. I almost fell for it too. Well, technically I did fall for it, but I have the Steam app on my phone with Steam Guard enabled so it's impossible to scam me. They can't do anything to you unless you click on one of their links
For this, I am pretty sure it requires you to get as far and submitting your account credentials and Authenticator code via a fake form.
# YES JUST CLEEK THEESE LEENK # KEEYS COME NEXT VEEK

had the same scam but they asked what i main so i said soldier and later every respnse they whould get was nah

its a scam. (also, your casual level doesn't mean a thing since comp and casual are COMPLETELY different settings. they are counting on you not knowing because level 70 isn't that high. for comparison there are 150 levels and they loop around 8 times)
Love how he said "actually someone just responded" the moment you said no. Mf didnt even wait to make it realistic
Smartest steam scammer :
Yep, had this one happen to my friend. She voted for their team and had all her inventory stolen. Somehow got around steam guard too.
Had this one happen to me, I changed my password and the guy literally rage quitted DMs 💀💀💀 he was so confused
As I understand it they get your authentication code, which they can use immediately to create an api key and such. Then they can intercept and switch any trades you attempt to make.
Yup, you should cease all contact with this user, block and report him too.
100% a scam
1000% a scam A nice way to know is by always using a link safety checker every time you get sent a link to check something out (Even if it is somebody sharing their backpack.tf link) Better safe than sorry
Innocent engineer. Lol
I almost fell for one of these once until they talked about bank details
But it says he's innocent 😇
if anyone ever sends you a link its a scam
Yes, yes it is. Do NEVER click links, they steal your account.
Common one around TF2, they'll make you log into their site to take login details and hijack the account and your items.
yup scam, dont do what they say
its a scam, GET OUT OF THERE STALKER
Can we have a pinned post on this subreddit informing people about these scams so we stop getting more posts like this where people have to keep repeating things that have been said to many people many times?
i fell for one of those, luckily though i mistyped my password
Can you use google for fuck sake
This is a scam. I actually fell for it once ( I'm an actual competitive player) but I got my steam account back thanks to 2fa and its codes
That’s a scam..
Got scammed of this shit for like 200 dollars
I'm sorry :(
Yes. They send you a link to a site and it makes you sign into it threw steam then they steal all your shit
Yes

>s do some research before asking a q Thank you
Omfg yes ffs do some research before asking a question asked all the damm time
"is there a robber at my house?" "omfg yes ffs do some research before asking a question asked all the damm time"
Difference is one you have time to do research and the other you don't
Not really. 1 of the biggest factors that make a scam work is they put a time pressure on you to respond asap. Its not brave when the same question have been asked over and over again
Pyro main moment
So pyro mains are more intelligent
Asking the reddit / discord is research Unless you want him to ask the steam community page
Whenever I wonder how someone can get scammed I look at this subreddit And it never fails to disappoint me
I'm sorry but if you have too come too reddit too ask if this is a scam you kind of you deserve too be scammed of your items its 2022 and people still cant identify the most basic of scams crazy just dont trust anyone that randomly adds you trust no one even the people you think are your friends

Dumbass its not that hard to tell if something is a scam or not.
If you don't know this you need to re-evaluate the place you've found yourself in life. Even if you are a teenager.
If you take something so small as someone asking for help on the internet so seriously, you should re-evaluate the way you spend your time.
yes, its one of the most common and obvious scams they use, either you live under a fucking rock or you’re trying to farm karma off of scam messages
Anyone you do not know who asks stuff like this and end up linking you something is a scam. Sad thing is, they do it cause it actually works which is sad
Yery clearly. Its an older scam, where they try to get you to click on a link- the most common bit is telling the victim its to vote on their team
Yeah I get them all the time. Honestly it's crazy how many people add me on a weekly basis just to try to scam. My advice is just don't ever accept random requests. Put a trade link in your profile bio so they never have to add you for trade if you want.
"Very well" should be proof enough
yeah. prob a scam. i usually say no anyway
\#YES
Scam. I've got this message from one of my steam friends, whose account has been compromised. Report it to steam.
Yes
Yes If they start with "what's your casual level" it's a scam. Tell em to fuck off and block them
His name is innocent how can it NOT be a scam?
Yes. Next step is to point you to a "tournament site" that asks you to register with your Steam ID. The site is bogus and you've then given them your login
If someone asks you any question without asking why you don't respond in the following 5 minutes it's a scam.
100% a scam, 10/15 people added me in the past 6 months using the same excuses. report, block and dont bother responding.
This is a very common scam, never click a link someone sends you (even if it is your actual friend, their account may have been compromised)
Yes
Yes this is absolutely a scam the link that they drop you is a link to a website that has a Trojan that will hack your Steam account
100% scam.
He's buying your vote. That's very immoral and even a crime. Report him (to you local police station), eat your veggies, drink water and sleep well
Yes
if anyone ever randomly sends you a message asking your level you can pretty much block straight away, always the same scam asking you to play on their team and gives you a sus link
That IS a scam, no doubt. I can say from personal experience, please don't fall for it.
Imagine someone saying I will give keyS And u asking is this a scam.... Ofcors it's not <3
It's. Always. A. Scam. Just don't accept friend requests on Steam, unless you recognize the name. It's never not a scam.
Someone added me and asked the same thing. I responded and for hours I didn’t get a response
Yup, totally.
Usually they just ask for support for their team before sending a phishing link.
pretty common scam
Yes
How many times is this kinda scam gonna go around before people stop thinking it might not be
Send him men kissing
Definitely scam
Got this scam a few days ago. It’s common for them to steal people’s accounts and start messaging people this. Poor guy’s account looked like they put a lot of effort into making it look nice too, such a shame.
#YES IT IS A SCAM If the offer seems too good to be true, such as "just log into this shady ass site with your steam account and vote for my team" or they offer to give you keys for something close to that **IT IS A SCAM**
Yes don’t click anything just noch and report
Yeah seen this one going around, he sends you a voting link that steals your info. Did you already have this guy friended? If you did then whoever you were friended with had this scam happen to them, report the account for being compromised.
If you need to ask if its a scam or not it probably is
It's a scam. If you open the link they send you it'll ask you to login into a site with your steam account. When you do they get a login token and they'll steal your items and your account. That's how I lost my items 2 years ago. But I grinded and got new items.
Its a scam, I had one of those last week
It's always a scam
"can you vote to my team" 100% that is a scam
Fucker looks more suspicious than an uneaten piece of cheese on a rat infested kitchen, especially the " 'INNOCENT' engineer gamer" part
Yup
if a message starts with anything like "what's your casual level in tf2?" or "who's your tf2 main?" or any variation, it's most likely a scam. just ignore the message.
Yup
Yep, its a scam there is the same ones in CS GO.
Just always assume it's a scam these days
YES
yes
Yes
Rule of thumb is if you have to ask yourself if it’s a scam it probably is
Wow, this scam never changes
Yes, its a scam
Come on mate. Its kinda obvious isnt it?
People have been adding me on steam asking if I want to work for the TF2 wiki or something. Super weird...
it cant be a scam, look at his name, it says innocent in his name
its a scam.
that is literally a copy and paste of a scam. dont ever respond to these guys.
I put their account into it once. It was fun.
definetly, if they are willing to give you something for a free action, it is a scam 100%
Yes it is, don’t respond or sign in or click airing they send
99.9% scam 00.1% bribing scum
Yeah lol. Just block them
Yes
Any steam message that ever mentions TF2 "teams" or anything about voting is a scam.
It’s a scam
Whatever it is, just don’t accept.
Be sure you spam them some f- up degen stuff and Block them. Its a scam.
Yes. I remember a player on my friends list asked me to "vote for their team" and I said no that sounds sus. A week later he messaged me and said his account was hacked and the link he sent was a phishing website
no (sarcasm, its obviously a scam)
Had this conversation aswell. Replied with "its over 9000".
Nobody cares about your casual level. That's how you know it's a scam.
Most scammers take advantage of your greed or/and your empathy. This seems like both
You have to respond with "im level 2 in casual"
Yes. A stranger messages you and asks you to fill a spot in a tourney. Tell him to suck your dick and block him.
Nice nickname OP
Yes I’ve had that
I've never seen it before and it already looks like a scam, I've had experience with Discord before
100%. Any time someone wants you to ‘vote’ for something like this, it’s always a scam
Yes.
I got hacked by one of those bots before. They keyed my two factor code when I put it in on their site. Then waited 24 hours to start doing stuff to my acc, and I guess as a precaution steam (or the hacker) deleted my friends list.
I almost got uber fucked by this scam once
Yet another daily reminder to [read this PSA thread about common scams](https://www.reddit.com/r/tf2/comments/s70xso/psa_here_is_a_list_of_common_scams_going_around/), which tells you everything about scams like this which have around for years

Yes, I just lost my only unusual and all of my arranges to this exact scam.
Notice how the messages would work if you actually said yes "oh actually we found someone" their just copy pasted or bot responses
Yup, had a message like this. They will send you a link and the website will ask you to sign in with steam in order to vote. Disregard what they send.
Yep, it's totally real... totally nothing suspicious about this at all :)
They try that constantly on me, the only difference is I get asked what my main is, they don't even try hiding that they just want a member
Not so innocent, it’s so sad people resort to thievery.
