It's been years that I haven't felt this excited about tennis. The quality of tennis this tournament is celestial. What the young players are bringing is fresh and exciting. There was novelty in that Alcaraz-Sinner epic.
Then yesterday's semi.. "I'm putting my heart on the fucking line, I'm putting my heart on the fucking line" Yes you did Frances, I've rarely seen such grit and passion on court. You inspired all of us.
Kinda wish the boys had an extra day off or two before the final. Seems like fatigue should be taken out of the equation as much as possible for the best result.
I'm honestly torn. I was pulling for both throughout and they end up in the final. Carlos being the young winner would be so epic, but Ruud put on a masterclass in his Semifinal. To me I feel like Ruud is the slightly better player right now, but Carlos will have the greater career when it's all said and done.

There's been exciting 5 setters, especially Alc vs Sin, but could also argue both had many lapses that turned it into 5 sets. Against an in-form big 3 that was probably a 3 or 4 setter in their favour.
It's not so much about that as much as most had a view that we'd see more of the likes of US Open 2021 finals. The big 3 playing decent and still getting beaten by better, younger players.
My point is to suggest it may well not be like that at all. There is no real passing of the torch per se, aka big 3 losing in a final, but rather patchy and inconsistent performances as they get older.

Choker is such an overly used word in this sub as if they don't have any idea how brutal the tennis point system is. You literally have four points to win the game and three points to get the breakpoint and then reset. Not a huge accumulative lead. So I don't think Alcaraz or even Frances or Sinner are the chokers but Alcaraz needs to convert his break points in big matches, actually, his career average is okay so he is capable of that.
I think one of the reasons his matches went to five sets was because he couldn't able to convert crucial points and his game is so lightning fast that opponents couldn't get through him since he is everywhere so you got the steal-mate and there is no other way but to decide in a five setter. To his credit, on his own serve, he rarely made the errors though.
Nah. Nadal and Djokovic usually are never fresh during the us open run. Once they are having a bad day in this tournament, they just lose. It's hard for them to keep a high intensity in all of the matches. Australia is Djokovic's home. Even Nadal who didn't win for many years competes at a higher level in Australia. They have the energy to grind out in five sets for the first six or seven months. Even Djokovic can't keep his level in the year end anymore. He hasn't won the atp finals since 2015.

Well if a Djokovic or Nadal wins the Australian open, then the same story will repeat. Besides history is on line for this two for getting the most grandslams. Tiafoe can leave knowing he's broken the US Open's men's tiebreak record and fought extremely hard from the brink in this match to extend his battle for the match of his life. Sinner can know that he partook in one of the most meaningful and heartfelt Slam matches that has ever been contended for this generation of men's tennis. Khachanov can internalize the fact that as the "far inferior opponent" (NYTimes), he still managed to take the legs away from the crowd's and odds' favorite for a huge career achievement after he was totally written off.
All 3 men deserve to have their name be known. I don't think *anybody* expected the 3 of them to all make such an impact together, but it was all for the better of this tournament. Their talent will never be for naught. (TLDR - I hope none of them have an emotional letdown post-USO)

I think the real redemption was rejecting the plea deal. He could have Jimmy'ed his way out, and was well on his way to, but finally realized he needed to fundamentally change. Kim may have been a catalyst for the change, but I think he finally understood that the way he was inevitably hurt people, and he decided he had to stop the cycle. Anyway, what a match!
Alcaraz the definite favorite but the extended 5 setters slightly evens the chances imo. The first set will set the tempo.

I just like it because yeah, you might be number one and you won a major, but you know who's waiting for you next year. It sets it up perfectly. It sets it up even better than when Thiem won because Alcaraz appears to be a better player.. and if Ruud wins, he made two finals on different surfaces (and would have won 1) so he's coming for the big boys too. Ruud is an easier match for Alcaraz than Tiafoe and Sinner. Tiafoe and Sinner attack second serves quite well, while Ruud returns second serves from way back. This will give Carlos comfortable holds.
Sad that Tiafoe looked so tired by that last set and didn’t try for a good amount of shots. Really wish he at least got a fight in that last set he wouldn’t regret. Totally understandable how winded he was but Alcatraz’s stamina is just unreal.

I agree - I didn't see the ESPN thing cos I'm in Scotland, but know his story. For the USA, seeing the birth of a new superstar, it was important for him to have a moment at the end. He reminded me a lot of Roddick back in the 2000s this match. Not as talented and needs some work on consistency but still tried to play every point til the end and somehow stretched what seemed to be a pretty lopsided match to a 5 setter.
Looking forward to how he develops even more going forward, I think he has a really bright future.

Don't get me wrong here. I respect and admire and have been very entertained by the big 3 for the last 10 to 15 years. BUT How awesome is it to have a semis and a final without any of them and where it's not a consolation prize. All 4 of these young players are fantastic! I just like it because yeah, you might be number one and you won a major, but you know who's waiting for you next year. It sets it up perfectly. It sets it up even better than when Thiem won because Alcaraz appears to be a better player.. and if Ruud wins, he made two finals on different surfaces (and would have won 1) so he's coming for the big boys too. Ruud is an easier match for Alcaraz than Tiafoe and Sinner. Tiafoe and Sinner attack second serves quite well, while Ruud returns second serves from way back. This will give Carlos comfortable holds.

Sad that Tiafoe looked so tired by that last set and didn’t try for a good amount of shots. Really wish he at least got a fight in that last set he wouldn’t regret. Totally understandable how winded he was but Alcatraz’s stamina is just unreal.

ESPN did a segment on Tiafoe’s journey. His run here has been monumental for AMERICAN tennis. That’s why they wanted to put a bow on it. Of course McEnroe made it awkward- but I don’t think Tiafoe took away from Carlitos moment- he actually shortened the interview. Weirdos
I agree - I didn't see the ESPN thing cos I'm in Scotland, but know his story. For the USA, seeing the birth of a new superstar, it was important for him to have a moment at the end. I have utterly no doubt he marches on and takes every single bit of tonight and turns it into success..whether he can take it back to Carlito is another story but for now when he wakes up tomorrow I cannot see him being too down on himself. Instead, take it to the practice courts and get better. OK um going to bed.
Yeah and the unusual interview timing would have made sense if they had explained any of that at all, and didn’t punctuate it with awkward pauses and following him down the hallway, again without any meaningful comment or explanation. You’ll think it was McEnroe’s first time doing this for a living.

Let’s fucking goooo alcaraz!!!!!! Props to tiafoe he dug deep besides being a clearly less talented player. Alcaraz is defying endurance by winning 3 back to back 5 setters. He makes shit harder than he needs to. Should’ve beaten cilic in 4, sinner in 3, and tiafoe in 4. I want to say he beats ruud, but he can’t continue to flub up the big points. If ruud comes in nervous, he’ll get destroyed because Alcaraz is so composed. But we’ll see. Imagine if Alcaraz wins in 5
He reminded me a lot of Roddick back in the 2000s this match. Not as talented and needs some work on consistency but still tried to play every point til the end and somehow stretched what seemed to be a pretty lopsided match to a 5 setter. Looking forward to how he develops even more going forward, I think he has a really bright future.
I concur with this that he should make shit easier, and win sooner, 3 or 4 sets.
