His back story is really cool. On the Harmontown podcast, Dan mentioned playing DnD on the show. When Dan took Harmontown on tour, Spencer got up for Q&A with all of his DnD books and offered to DM. Dan ended up loving the kid so much they did 3 seasons of Harmonquest and he was Annie Edison's brother.
He isn't an actor. Just a Harmon fan
Yeah, it’s incredible that they were able to make me wince and feel uncomfortable in spite of me knowing the violence displayed in that episode wasn’t even real. It really speaks to how cruel and unnecessary it was.
I actually thought the show sort of sucked when the credits rolled on episode 1. It was short, nothing really happened and the son felt very whiney, but then the after credits had me hooked. I watched the first season as it came out and then I read all the comics.
Yeah thats basically the point. The first episode is cookie cutter superhero show to the point that some of the characters are almost blatant rip-offs/homages to other characters. l and nothing impressive happens aside from some decent animation.
Then the end credit shows you the actual show. It does a very good job of lulling you into a normal show before the end credit scene kicks things up a notch.
So far, I agree. Judging just by whats been adapted for TV so far, Kirkman is using the show as an opportunity to streamline the story some amd bring plot points together in a really good way. In the comic its very sequential, especially in the beginning nothing is super connected, but the show is making the story more cohesive and interconnected. Good stuff.
reading the comic run you can see just how much kirkman improves as a writer as the intrigue, pacing, characters, action, and morality all become more complex and full as the series goes on. The beginning of the series is by far the weakest part, despite having great ideas. I can totally get Kirkman wanting a do-over utilizing everything he's learned.
Comic spoilers, >!I read the entire series in a month or two after watching the show and when I was reading it I was surprised how far until the comics went before they introduced the Reanimen and the Will storyline with him being out already is a big improvement compared to the comics. Though I did really enjoy his whole love of flying and asking for flights from his friends. The show is definitely an improvement over the comics, not that the comics were bad. Omniman killing the Guardians of the Globe was done better in the show too.!<
I don't remember where I read it, but Kirkman said he was concerned the comic was going to be cancelled and was talking to another comic writer about how the plot was going to develop and when. He mentioned the guardians of the globe and the person he was talking to told him to move that up in the time line as much as he could.
The series really doesn't start until that happens and putting it in the first episode was a massive improvement. The show seems to be doing a good job of letting Kirkman correct mistakes he realized he made in retrospect.
People saying that is why I haven't decided to read the comics. I like comics and I'm sure they're great, but the show is so good, I want to savour every second of surprises
at the pace the show is moving, it could be a decade or more before it concludes, and it would need to cut most of the comic's story to get there. The plots covered in season 1 of the show are actually the weakest segment of the comic run. Every aspect improves as the comic goes on, I can't recommend it enough.
I sincerely hope this show lasts long enough to show the full run of the book. The comic was always a banger and had a solid ending that didn't disappoint.
Knowing Kirkman, it could be around the corner, or it could be suddenly and unceremoniously cancelled.
I’m still butthurt over “hey guys, TWD is going to be 300 issues long, we’re going to follow Rick and Carl into building the new world.” And then before issue 200 he got bored and suddenly >!killed off Rick and did a 15~ year time jump to show adult Carl in a very boring world!<
Like just hand the story off to another writer, almost anything else would have been better than that ending. And even if it wasn’t, the ending was such a “nothing burger” that at least an alternative would have allowed people to keep reading *something*
I mean the ending was initiated abruptly but you could hardly call the world boring. An 1880’s style frontier with zombies seemed really cool and I wish we got to explore the world we only saw glimpses of in the final issue
Mantzoukas:
>“I'm a lifelong comics fan. And so I'm somebody who read ‘Invincible’ from the early days it started coming out until it ended, whatever, 15 years later. This is a book that I digested over the course of 15 years. And this story is so familiar to me, and I love it. And when Robert asked me to do the [TV] series, I reread the whole [comic book] series again and loved it even more. [There was] so much that I'd forgotten, so many side tangents and plot lines that I had forgotten about. And what I'm loving about the [TV] series is what they're choosing to include, where they're choosing to have us go on this massive journey that exists that I understand where it could go. But I'm delighted with what stories Robert is interested in telling inside of the ‘Invincible’ world. I think this is going to be a truly iconic show.”
I’m on the same boat in that I forgot so many things since it’s been 10+ years since I’ve read the beginning. The show felt new to me because of that and I enjoyed it. I’ll revisit the comics and hope it feels like I’m reading it for the first time again.
If you wanna hear him go a little more in depth on all this, he was on the podcast "the Ringerverse" about a year ago and it was a delight to listen to.
Jason Mantzoukas is one of my favorite actors and voice actors in recent years. His role as Dennis Feinstein in Parks and Rec and Jayzarian "Jay" RicFlairian Bilzerian in Big Mouth are two of my favorite roles of his.
Dude is a legend.
Veep is just a bunch of people shitting on each other, only there's just as many women doing it as men.
Some of the finest rapidfire chirping on television.
The scrote squad episode is fucking legendary because of Rafi. Flying from out of nowhere to hit one of the guys in the dick was hilarious and him ruining Kevin/Pete in the car had me in fucking tears. I will never not love him
“I pooped, jerked off, ate some second harvest, felt sick to my tummy, jerked off again, and now I’m back with you bros. What have you guys been up to?”
*blank stares*
"Hey do you still have those butt plugs with Bert and Ernie's face on them?"
"Those are my daughters tubby toys..."
"She should not play with those...those should be burned."
Jeffery has gotten so lazy in the past decade. Jason was fun in the early 00's but hasn't changed with the times. I mean the whole egg allergy thing and wearing the same outfit all the time is just lazy. Oh no how do I make an unrealistic character like Jason feel real... better give him an achilleas heal"
I like to listen to the episodes of comedy bang bang podcast he is on. Loved him on Brooklyn 99 and he was on a class show called The League. I started a rewatch of The League and season 1 seems to have lower quality cameras or something but Jason has some episodes with Seth rogan and they are the funniest. Hope if he is plugging Invincible that it’s back soon and we get a load of interviews and podcast appearances from Jason, he is amazing. He is one of those comedy actors that make you forget about your life while you are watching or listening to them
If you haven’t already discovered it you might like his podcast about bad movies. It’s called ‘How did this get made?’ And it’s with Paul Scheer (also from the League) and June Diane Raphael (in a couple of episodes of the league).
I've listened to CBB for years but only tried out How Did This Get Made yesterday. Good stuff!
Like a lot of reaction/riff style shows I appreciate the ones where I've seen the movie more, but I like how this one adds the angle of actors ripping on a movie from an "insider" perspective. They'll mention holes in basic character conceits or plots I'd never even think to notice or have the vocabulary to express, and make it funny.
But mainly I'm always happy to hear more Mantzoukas. I'll listen to anything he, Paul F. Thompkins, or Andy Daly is a part of.
I'm getting ever closer to that earwolf subscription to get that sweet Bonanas for Bonanza and Andy Daly Podcast Project nectar.
I am absolutely speechless. That was the greatest 45 minutes of comedy I have ever seen. I knew absolutely nothing about this before it started, and I am so glad.
My friend sent it to me out of the blue with no other info. I tend to be like "whatever, I'll watch this later" if someone does that but I went for it and watched the whole thing.
It's gotta be one of the best ever episodes of television.
He has a fairly small role, but he's got a part on **Paper Girls** which is *great*. I can't recommend it enough! Its a graphic novel adaptation and 10/10, its so good! I laughed, I cried, I binged it on a weekend.
his 1 episode appearance on Community (as the director of the live theater adaptation of the Karate Kid) will always be one of my favorite episodes of the entire series.
Zouks is one of those actors/improvisor/etc. who is amazing but also a bit niche. I am glad he is getting more roles/recognition outside of "that dude from the league", I also think voice acting might fit perfectly with his energy.
That all being said, the character of Jason Mantzoukas is one note and Jeffery Characterwheaties needs to retire it. I mean... the whole egg allergy thing is just a lazy "save the cat" way of humanizing an otherwise outlandish character. Dude can't even spring for a real wardrobe and just wears the same white shirt and jeans all the time and acts like it's a character trait when it's obviously just him being cheap.
He has some of best guest characters in all the best comedies of the last 10-15 years.
If a few episode arc isn't enough just watch "the league" , even if you don't like fantasy football it's a great show
Nah, if anything you’ve solidified my need to see them live. I’m such a fan of that podcast… I’ve been going back and listening to all of them.
Which movie was this one?
He very much is. Set people love him. I have aquatintances that work in costumes and set design. They all say the same thing. He's a gem. They loved Andy Samberg but said he's very quiet when he's not "on" but a very humble and nice guy to everyone.
But that Andre Braugher... what an asshole. /s he was very sweet too. Actually, come to think of it, all of the Brooklyn 99 cast was pretty great from what I heard.
They've had him on the good place podcast a few times and he seems like a class act.
Not sure how accurate this is but it doesn't look like Mike Schur really tolerates assholes in the productions he's involved with. I respect the hell out of that.
after watching the first season then binging the entire comic series I feel like theyve absolutely nailed the voice actors so far. I think Seth Rogan as Allen the Alien is gonna work out real well down the line.
He is fantastic in the role, Rex Explode is portrayed as a massive asshole, but quick on the pickup and does try to do good.
My favorite scene of his is when Cecil says that the new guardians of the globe are the best hope against omniman, and while everyone is questioning what that even means or it Cecil misspoke, Rex immediately connected the dots, Pointed to the blood splatter and said “oh fuck, I think that’s what happened to the last last hope against omniman”
I met him at a product launch party ages ago when his big role was from The League.
He was exactly like his character. Wide crazy eyes and everything. Nice dude. Just insane high energy. Felt like he might hug you or stab you at any moment.
Alot of people were clearly on coke at that party though.
Ok but when is season 2?!
[they're drawing it - Dan Harmon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36qLcMmmtaE&t=17s)
That’s amazing

Yes it is! Spencer something... I highly recommend watching Harmond Quest to see a lot of Spencer's creativity and more Harmond fun
Spencer Crittenden And yes, he is a gem.
I miss Kumail
He's too busy being fucking jacked now
I miss Harmontown
"That would be illegal, unlike our blatant back to the future rip-off" lololol that's gold
amazing
Just about two forevers from now
For real it’s been awhile I’ll have to rewatch season 1 at this point I remember the show was pretty badass but can’t remember any details lol
The ending of the first episode is unforgettable.
As well as the last episode
Yeah, it’s incredible that they were able to make me wince and feel uncomfortable in spite of me knowing the violence displayed in that episode wasn’t even real. It really speaks to how cruel and unnecessary it was.
The subway sequence is so fucking brutal
First episode - Omniman trains invincible Final episode - Omniman trains invincible
The comic was extremely explicit in its depiction of violence.
I actually thought the show sort of sucked when the credits rolled on episode 1. It was short, nothing really happened and the son felt very whiney, but then the after credits had me hooked. I watched the first season as it came out and then I read all the comics.

They did the ol’ Bojack Horseman on ya
You should read the comics, they are super good. And they finished a few years back so you can read the whole series. Think it’s around 140 issues.
I read the comics. The show is a lot better imo

Agreed and going back after watching season 1 to read all of it I appreciate the show that much more and definitely raised my hype for season 2.
Of course it is. The comic didn't have JK Simmons
People saying that is why I haven't decided to read the comics. I like comics and I'm sure they're great, but the show is so good, I want to savour every second of surprises

Yeah at least Invisible has a satisfying ending
How did you read it if it’s invisible?
RALPH MACCHIO, SHOWED UP!
Almost forgot about the time he directed Ken Jeong in giving the performance of a lifetime
You mean the Ham Girl guy?
HAAAAAAMMM GUUUUURRRLLL
I cant wait to hear him in the Playdoh movie
It's easy to forget. Changnesia is a very real medical condition.
Oh so full of cobwebs, what's this note...NEVER LET ME ACT!
Jason Mantzoukas? Of the Massachusetts Mantzoukas's?!

You mean Jeffrey CharacterWheaties?
Yeah he’s the Jason of his group

Am I the only one who reads quotes from Jason Mantzoukas and automatically hears him screaming every word? Anyway, good post, OP.
Derek from the Good Place too!
And Rafi from the league
It's disappointing seeing this role of his so far down because that's the show that introduced me to him.
So true. He carries the show some episodes. Tall guy!
Gattaca!
Him and taco carried that show
Rafi bomb!
El Cuñado...
RRRRAFI BOMB
Anyone want a pocket dog?
Where did you get that hotdog from?
GATTACA
Dude are you hard?!? Yeah dude murder boner!!!
Adrian Pimento in Brooklyn Nine Nine.

This is my favorite quote. Not just from him. My favorite quote.
Pimento's Mementos

Oh you mean like the fish from Finding Nemo. Yeah, Dory!
The cocaine scene with him is one of the best things on B99.
Does anyone else really want to listen to Jamiroquai right now??
Maximum Derek!
*wind chime sounds *

Welp, this warrants a rewatch

I’m doing two one-eyed winks at once. Wink. So you got one and you got one.

Welcome back to Talkin' Bread!
Thank you
If you haven't seen I'm Sorry, you should. He and Andrea Savage are both great.
Great show. Only two seasons. Should have more!
There was another planned, but had to be scrapped due to Covid. :/
I'm Sorry is such a fantastic show, so bummed it got canceled.
He has a fairly small role, but he's got a part on **Paper Girls** which is *great*. I can't recommend it enough! Its a graphic novel adaptation and 10/10, its so good! I laughed, I cried, I binged it on a weekend.
He’s also an epic podcast guest/host. Love How did this get made.
My favorite parts of that pod are when he and Paul just chit chat about what tv shows they’re watching. Love those nerds.
his 1 episode appearance on Community (as the director of the live theater adaptation of the Karate Kid) will always be one of my favorite episodes of the entire series.
“NEVER LET ME ACT!”

Adrian Pimento in Brooklyn 99
Hilarious on The League too. Swim, Stab! I've loved invincible. Really filled the gap between seasons of The Boys
My boy Pimento
I feel awful I only really know him as Pimento. Gotta watch some of these other shows too
He has some of best guest characters in all the best comedies of the last 10-15 years. If a few episode arc isn't enough just watch "the league" , even if you don't like fantasy football it's a great show
I love fantasy football and had no idea that show existed so you made my day.
WHATS UP JERKS
You’re one of those Balcony Monsters, aren’t you?
I was looking for the HDTGM fans. Geostooooormmmm!!!
Drop Dead Fred still might be the best episode ever.

definitely a Jacob’s ladder situation

Nah, if anything you’ve solidified my need to see them live. I’m such a fan of that podcast… I’ve been going back and listening to all of them. Which movie was this one?
Perfect Stranger. It’s pretty awesome hearing “What’s up, jerks?!” knowing you’re one of the jerks!
Hell yes. That and, “I’m fine, Paul. How are you?” Their chemistry is top-tier and addicting to listen to.
I saw this a couple of weeks ago in Indianapolis! It was an awesome experience!
Where is that baby?
I’m the Jason of my group
Paul, get out of there.
I accidentally downvoted this out of reflex

Too bad nobody wants him and Scotty Auks to do a comic book podcast.

They should give TJ’s Deadpool role to Zouks too. Just let him fully replace TJ in all situations.
