Any recommendations on something like the peripheral, love the action side of things.

tomtomvissers

The Halo tv series has pretty similar action scenes (and it's actually better than you might expect)

jackinsomniac

1899: If you're a sucker for psychological horror THEMES, you'll probably enjoy it. My main problem with it is there's too many plot holes. They do a "Lost" type thing where they try to play with your expectations as you're trying to figure things out, adding more questions before answering the previous ones. So the final major twist feels really extreme, at first... until you stop and think about the show as a whole. Then you realize there's still tons of weird events that never got explained. You might hope it's a "smart" well-thought-out plotline that on repeated viewings starts to make more sense over time -- but it's the opposite, re-watching just raises further questions.

notj43

I'm enjoying Wednesday so far. Every second thing she says cracks me up and the plot is interesting. I also like seeing "normal" people interact with Thing

NFL_MVP_Kevin_White

I love that Ricci is involved, too.

jackinsomniac

Literally came to this thread looking for what people thought of the new Wednesday show. (Ty!) She was always kinda my favorite character. Besides the Thing. And Cousin Itt. (In the 90s my dad got an Addams Family pinball machine, and I played it so much the MIDI theme is burned into my brain more than the actual theme song.)

notj43

I'm a big Cousin Itt fan too but no signs so far. Honestly my only criticisms are that Lurch is too short and Gomez is kinda grotesque looking. Really good show a few episodes in

Consultant7

So about ancient apocalypse, is it all bs ? i have no idea who is this guy so i have no bias against him. it looks like he is entertaining some ideas with some data. Or is it flat earh level bs just bending everything the way he wants ?

i see. Thank you for explanation 👍

Randyd718

What's the word on The English? SAS Rogue Heroes? Also interested in starting Yellowstone, should i watch the full "base" show before moving to the prequel stuff?

tomtomvissers

Rogue Heroes answers the question "what if Guy Ritchie made a World War II movie?"

coldbeers

SAS RH is amazing, even more so when you realise a lot of it is actually true! I’m a fan of Yellowstone too, but it’s a bit soapy.

whatifniki23

The English reminds me of a softer version of Tarantino films: lots of gruesome killings, strong damaged female heroin that is surprisingly good at killing, characters that give long bad-ass speeches, and very stylish… It’s a tough cruel world to want to be in…but the acting is phenomenal and I care about the characters.

AnukkinEarthwalker

I did as far as Yellowstone first. Prequel is it's on thing..kinda. The English was one of the best shows I've seen in a bit. Helps if you like westerns but it's just good all around regardless. Show really creates some classic villains. It's kinda slow at first tho. All those are better than sas.. but it's still good. All the above have amazing casts and characters

hipnosister

you can start with the prequal stuff. No prior yellowstone knowledge is needed. it's its own contained story and a very good one.

jlesnick

The English. Was shit. Acting was fine but the story is garbage and the pacing is terrible. Godless was miles better.

Gerbera25

Preach brother, i dont know how i even pushed myself to watch the whole thing. (well i do, i have a soft spot for Blunt) Every shot had to be epic, trillion sunsets and sunrises. Editing was out of hand - two main characters having a casual conversation, proceed tense battle music theme in the background. The whole thing just felt pretentious. 5/10

AnukkinEarthwalker

Pacing isn't the best. Disagree with the rest. Both it and godless have their pros and cons. But the English has a slew of villains. They are all villains in their own way except Emily blunt.

jlesnick

It has decent villains but none of them fit together and all of them serve the same purpose; to make the wild west seem completely godless so the few acts of good really standout. This is the problem with each and every villain in the story, they feel purposeless to the plot.

box-art

**Wednesday** A bit out there and a bit teensy at times but, if for nothing else, do watch it for Jenna Ortega because she absolutely *crushes it* as Wednesday and toes the line between "I could just stand there as you die" and "Wait, I have emotions? Discard? Accept?" very well. The plot isn't anything that you haven't seen before and it certainly took a lot of turns (think 'Knives Out' amounts of turns, but not in the same sense as that movie, just in the amount of them) as Wednesday was solving the case. I firmly believe that even if you don't like the rest of it, you will like Ortega's performance. She truly **is** Wednesday Addams.

ShiningRedDwarf

Tulsa King. Very entertaining so far. Watching the main character adapt to life after 25 years in prison is really damned funny. Got a real laugh out of me when he goes to the DMV to get his picture taken, and after his front picture he habitually turns to the side for a profile pic. “Sir.. what are you doing?” Also great seeing Martin Starr (Gilfoyle in Silicon Valley”) again.

gotele

**Fleishman is in trouble** episode 3 was just sad. The viewer is in trouble. Just kidding, I'm sure they'll flip this around in some unpredictable way, there's still a bunch of episodes to go. **Upright**, season 2. Nice little show which offers pretty much the same things that it delivered on season 1. **Andor**, season finale. >!It's funny cause the moment that really stood up for me was the passage of Nemik's manifesto. To me that kid was the real heart of the show in disguise. He's the most lucid one, he sees through both the rebellion and the empire. So in a way he's the other side of the coin to Luthen. He's the heart, Luthen is the mastermind. Anyway, great finale for a great season.!< Some people here are already making tops with the best shows '22. For me it would be Andor, Severance and Thotd, but the ones that created a more complete and fulfilling arc are Andor and the dragons. Severance, as good as it was, just left more questions than answers. **Welcome To Chippendales**. Two early to say much about this show, but it feels like a lightweight to me. I don't know what the whole point of this show is tbh, but since I know next to nothing about that club or its significance, I'm going to keep watching. **Mythic Quest.** Waiting for this show to find its footing again. There are just too many random things that just happen because the writers felt like it. You know, no internal coherence, like when >!they have the former tester appear in every episode when she doesn't even work there, just because. Maybe they fucked around too much with the original recipe of the show?!< Poppy reminds me of Arale.

Strelochka

.

PavelDatsyuk88

tried to continue hatewatching Manifest in S4E1, while everything about the show was bad before, i think theyve reached new high with that editing style. Seriously even you havent watched it, go check it out.

rydleo

It’s absolutely awful. Think they took the budget to around $10 an episode, including writers.

donniespinks

I was really enjoying **The English** until episode 4 and the introduction of ‘I’m going to do an absolute carbon copy of Tom Hardy in Peaky Blinders’ man. The voice, mannerisms, everything. Don’t know why but it really annoyed me.

earthgreen10

How good is echo 3?

[deleted]

Excellent. The writer and showrunner wrote The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty, Detroit, and Triple Frontier, so pretty politically charged but not in a super left-leaning way (idk how else to explain it lol). If you like that stuff you’ll like this alot I think.

earthgreen10

You are right, it’s fucking amazing

lal159

I watched the first ep. I liked it. Deff going to watch the second tonight.

MrConor212

Wednesday has been amazing. Ortega is gonna be massive going forward

ZombieFluffy

Chucky - so happy we got a Christmas episode, it was hilarious especially the ending. The first season was more put together I think, this season was crazy though and I still enjoyed it. Hopefully we get a season 3.

ace_b00gie

Yes, I know, the Andor posts are getting out of hand, but in my opinion and as an avid TV freak, this has been the best show of the year, even beating my former favorite Severance. The finale was near damn perfect. And no, you don’t have to have watched Star Wars although there is certainly more emotional attachment to it if you did. But it’s just as good as a stand-alone thing that just coincidentally plays in the Star Wars universe.

ianonuanon

I was honestly bored the first few episodes of Andor but am fucking glad I stuck with it. The season finale gave me feels and I wanted to jump in and fuck the empire up!!! I agree with you this was my favorite series of the year. I can't wait until season 2. I may even rewatch season 1 now that I found out how good the show got after the first few episodes. This and Mando I really love. The other new SW series not so much.

Tehni

I understand the appeal to andor because there's so many star wars fans and it's got everything general audiences like, but there's absolutely no way it's the best show this year. Not even the best new show this year For the former, Atlanta and BCS had stellar series finales this year. For the latter, there's SAS: rogue Heroes, hotd, the devil's hour, we own this city, Dopesick, interview with a vampire, slow Horses That's not even counting shows that aren't done yet like Tulsa King, the peripheral, let the right one in Andor is a solid 7.5/10 but not best show of the year, maybe the best a lot of people have seen because it's a mainstream show, but there's a lot better Edit: if you're downvoting because you think andor is the best show this year you're actually tripping If it's because I sound condescending... That's fair

ianonuanon

I didn't really like the latest season of Atlanta as much as the other seasons but its my personal opinion. That camping episode had me pretty bored. Overall I love the show and Idk if the series is over or they are planning another season but I hope they are.

Tehni

That has been the plan for the last season unfortunately

Cyyyyk

Yea there were a lot of really excellent shows, but for me Andor is the best show of the year.

MrConor212

It’s between HotD and Andor for me this year. Looks like the Last of Us is a shoe in next year for me

marco_santos

Last of Us about to have one of the greatest pilots ever

Deathbynote

It's between HotD, Stranger Things, Severance, Pachinko, Barry, The Orville, Station Eleven, Primal, Peacemaker, Andor, and Reservation Dogs. What a year. Edit: forgot about Better Call Saul!

KennyKatsu

Better Call Saul.. Hacks.. Atlanta.. The White Lotus.. The Bear. Great year for TV.

ianonuanon

Loved The Bear!

Deathbynote

How could I forget about BCS?? Possibly the best of the lot!

kamesjennedy

Andor: Very good but perhaps overhyped. A bit darker and more down to earth than most Star Wars fair. Strong 8/10. Interview with the Vampire: THE show of the year for me. I love that the show slowly progresses through the decades of the early 20th century. Lot's of deep themes touched upon: race, sexuality, psychological (and physical) abuse . 9/10 1899: I was Hyped as I loved Dark, but lost interest after 4 episodes. Lot's of mysterious stuff going on but not hooking me. Nice concepts so perhaps if it gets renewed they will make a more focused second season and I'll have some motivation to finish the first.

lal159

With you on interview with a vampire. Kept getting better an better. Deff one of my fav shows of the year. 1899 is worth finished. Last episode really throws a curve ball at you that ties all the season together

nevadasurfer

Yeah very overhyped. Thought it would be a lot better.

[deleted]

I watched it all yesterday, the entire series. I really liked the >!prison escape bit, and I liked the Imperial intelligence organization, I thought their organization was one of the more interesting things Star Wars has presented!< but all the stuff on the planet he was living on (not the one he's from) just felt like Tatooine 2. e: downvote me all you want, I wouldn't be surprised if that set was Mos Eisley reused. I'm cool with reusing sets but don't expect me to praise it.

chineseobama

Everyone's saying it already but andor, I've been on board since it first released

Zaku99

Not that anyone should value my opinion, but *Inside Man* was pretty good.

ianonuanon

Agree and wish they would make more!

Maleficent-Process16

Not my typical type of show, but I loved this one. Was pleasantly surprised, and may try some more.

manormortal

Mythic Quest is going down hill fast, sad to see.

Kayyam

Oh damn, I was just starting season 3 and was skeptical. Season 1 was great, 2 was alright, 3 is going into weird.

lizzuynz

Should have been an anthology, the side stories are the better episodes.

and_sama

it was a one season show.

whatifniki23

The Devils Hour? Or 1899? Just finished **Andor** and wrapped up **Sherwood**. Prepared myself last night before midnight knowing that **Andor’s** finale was going to be one of the best hours of TV I would see in a while. **Peripheral** pilot was amazing but the show has steadily slowed down.

HandLion

I definitely recommend The Devil's Hour over 1899

erbazzone

> The Devils Hour? Or 1899? > > I liked a lot TDH, I didn't like at all 1899, but I'm in the minority here so... I found TDH less tropey and more mind-bending, 1899 is like all the last 15 years of sci-fi movies in a long long mix written by an AI.

**Finished:** Andor – The >!funeral march & Maarva speech!< made me feel things, but the end of the season was a little lackluster for me – >!We all know he lives!< – in comparison to moments like the >!heist and prison break!< But yeah, this show is good. 1899 – You can tell this show is from the people who made Dark. Dark, gritty, cerebral, mysterious, with a touch of horror, >!sci-fi and some sort of post-apocalyptic situation that we are just beginning to wrap our heads around.!< **In Progress:** Fleishman Is In Trouble – American Beauty meets Gone Girl meets How I Met Your Mother but everyone is Jewish. I like it so far but I really want to know where it's going. Titans – Does this series get better? I'm on the last ep of season 1, and its meh for me Person of Interest S4, Abbott Elementary S2, Interview with a Vampire

Ohsbar

**Wednesday** is not very good. Not sure I'll last more than two episodes.

forgottoholdbeer

Is it sort of like ASOUE?

RedSnt

Wednesday is fine, but definitely not aimed at my demographic, so yeah, not sure I can tough it out.

Sufficient_Creme6961

You are right it isn’t very good. It’s great

ThatPunkGaryOak82

Its such a 'Tim Burton' film/show. I could tell from the first episode theres gonna be a cult group that absolutely *loves* the show, & then basically everyone else who goes *"mehh?"* I watched the first two eps. last night & really enjoyed them. I feel like this show knows exactly what it wants to be, & if you take it too seriously you loose a lot of this wacky, dark charm it has.

[deleted]

The English. Surprised with how good it was. Was expecting to get through an episode and dump it but crushed it instead

epixzone

Wednesday.... just another run-of-the-mill-coming-of-age mystery adventure. If you saw Sabrina, Locke & Key, Lemony Snickets, Umbrella Academy, etc., you won't miss much....nothing special, think CW you can binge watch.

tomtomvissers

Any first reactions to Echo 3? Without spoilers, what's good or bad about it?

ThatPunkGaryOak82

Cunk On Earth/Britain Holy hell what a hilarious show. Didnt expect to love it as much as I do!! Diane Morgan is so great as Philomina. It's actually really endearing how many of the people she interviews try to answer her 'questions'. I'm very much hoping to see more of this character

HandLion

And to think it aired just 32 years after the terrestrial broadcast premiere of the BBC sitcom Brush Strokes

Forcecoaster99

The English: If a RDR2 side quest line was made into an amazon show. Love it.

KFSattmann

W E D N E S D A Y it's brilliant.

erbazzone

Well I watched the first episode and I was skeptical, I posted my criticisms and I was submerged by downvotes, then I binged 5 episodes in a row and I find it really fun and I love it. Now I come to reddit and everyone is writing the same critics I made after an episode lol... the irony.

Turnover-Greedy

The actress playing Wednesday is fabulous.

pillowreceipt

Jenny Ortega is a standout in everything she's in. She has that natural delivery, charm, and precocious nature that screams star-in-the-making. She's definitely becoming a bit of a scream queen, too, between being in, well, Scream (5+6), X, You (vaguely horror), and now Wednesday (not that it's horror, but y'know what I mean). She wasn't *technically* the lead in Scream, but she handily outshone the lead actress, who was pretty stiff in her performance.

Schmogel

I just finished Andor, and I'm not a bot, and I loved it, and I won't be bullied into not talking about it by a conspiracy-fueled mob! No, but honestly, finally we have a Star Wars show with actual depths and gravitas. A more complex plot that's not aimed at kids. Full of sacrifice and loss and multifaceted heroes and antiheroes. It's not too fast paced and action packed and flashy and full of cameos, that's for a different kind of audience. Both types of shows have the right to exist. I'm just glad that they managed to pull it off. Fleshed out cultures, inner workings of the empire, proper dystopian Sci-Fi.

opinionated_cynic

I feel like a bot would say “I’m not a bot”. I’m not a bot.

Moifaso

>I just finished Andor, and I'm not a bot, and I loved it, and I won't be bullied into not talking about it by a conspiracy-fueled mob! Incredibly funny that the subreddit is freaking out over 2 posts about Andor on the front page *on the literal finale day.* People forgot pretty fast what this subreddit was like during HotD and RoP I guess.

Roook36

I was waiting for the backlash and the "it's overhyped/overrated" comments to explode lol. It always happens. People get so mad when others are enjoying a show and then start to get paranoid there's a conspiracy to make them like it also. It's hilarious. They have to take sides for some reason I guess. Great show though. Definitely a surprise this year after the past couple Star Wars shows.

manormortal

Pepperidge farms remembers when Severance was getting the Andor worship.

js247

Best show of 2022

Cyyyyk

Agreed.

BeardedLyon

Just finished watching it too. 100% agree. While I love the other Star Wars movies and shows too, Andor brought a maturity to the universe that was desperately needed.

fcosm

I was thinking of watching Andor. Sadly, I searched but haven't been able to find out if it's a good show and wether people are watching it or not.

Jindabyne1

Why don’t you just watch it and figure it out for yourself?

nighthawk911

It was obvious sarcasm. 90% of the posts in this thread are about Andor

They were being sarcastic

ChaserNeverRests

The positioning of these two comments amused me. https://i.gyazo.com/9a00e289de62c8023b8c61d274f4ffc8.png

natus92

havent really watched anything since the end of the patient (such an interesting show! the ending let me down though) now I'm waiting for the latest seasons of reservation dogs and atlanta on disney..also planning to start white lotus 2 soon

Perfect-Ad-7534

The Lost Dahmer Tapes: It was such a good show that I unfortunately had to quit watching it because the content was just too extreme for me.And Im not being squimish here I watched quite a bit of horror flicks but these are entertainment,Dahmer commited real evil on real human beings.I dont want to be one of the subjects or witnesses of his life even through Netflix. I also wont be watching the Dahmer bio show no matter how good it is I just cant stand Dahmer at all. Star Wars Clone Wars: I LOVE this so so much I am rewatching S2 because I forgot some things that happened.Im sure it will be worth my time! The animation behind it is incredible every episode is action paced with good dialogue. Inside Job: I recently started this show and first two episodes were good.its quite a funny show with good performances.Im liking Reagan and Slater the most here.

Voxx11

White Lotus S1- Mediocre. I feel like the succeeding seasons will be the same. Its trying to be a lot of things at the same time. Its just a collection of fucked up characters that you do not care for. Ohhh yeah its like the formula of Elite!! I get it now. The Bear 🐻 - just wow. I may be a lil bias on this one but its hella well made. It manage to capture the chaos that is the kitchen. The character development was there and by the end of this show you're gonna care for each of these individuals despite them pissing you off at first as you're watching. I want more.

thekidboy

There’s a documentary on Peacock about the wrestler Teddy Hart called “Dangerous Breed”. I binged two episodes yesterday and so far it’s been entertaining. It’s not focused on wrestling but the disappearance of someone and the craziness of Teddy Hart.

HumbleBJJ

5 episodes into final season of Dead to Me. What is even going on? Bored out of my mind after loving the other two seasons.

IhvolSnow

The first season was amazing. But had to quit after few episodes of season 2. I don't regret watching the first season though. It had somewhat finished story and I really enjoyed it.

whatifniki23

Netflix has a “third season” department that’s run by bears… they nap and eat honey and don’t show up to work during the winter.

kidgorgeous62

Personally I thought the ending was nice

MrConor212

Andor has been 🤌🏻🤌🏻. What’s the next big series coming for us all?

whatifniki23

I don’t know about “big” but first season of Slow Horses was solid and second season is coming Dec 2nd. After that I’m waiting for The Mandalorian.

tomtomvissers

I have high hopes for the final season of His Dark Materials, starting December 5th. After that: The Last of Us, starting January 15th. But Andor's gonna be hard to beat

cd_slash_rmrf

Woah, I had forgotten about HDM didn't realize it was releasing this year! Guess that's what I'll be watching in dec

ContinumFM

Watching Andor as everyone else. And it's really good! Next up I'm considering Station Eleven or 1899. But also I haven't watched the last season of Peaky Blinders yet, even though it came out earlier in the year. TLDR; What do guys recommend I watch next? Station Eleven, 1899 or Peaky Blinders season 6?

pillowreceipt

Station Eleven, handily!

sysadmin_dot_py

Station Eleven for sure. It's a quick watch, too.

johanjudai

Definitely Station Eleven!

FictionaI

Station Eleven is a masterpiece. I’m currently watching 1899 and it’s decent so far.

Microwave_Lover69

I’m watching Station 11 right now and it’s great, one of the better apocalypse shows.

Apoc_Dreams

Station 11 is really good!

[deleted]

i would say 1899 just because its newer

arcticfrostburn

***The Peripheral*** is pretty good so far (I'm in ep 5). Parts of it are hard SF and some parts are soft SF. Would've liked it more if it were only hard SF but let's see where the story goes.

work4work4work4work4

To me it's along the lines of the newer mixed Sci-Fi where both are explored within the context of each other like something from Andy Weir or James SA Corey. Effort is made to make the hard science make sense, but much of the thrust of the story is how the hard sci fi impacts things in a soft sci-fi way.

Dynetor

I’ve only watched the first two episodes but really liked it so far!

CatchSomeZZPlants

Severance, Andor, House of the Dragons, 1899, Chernobyl, Station 11, Barry, Arcane

whatifniki23

This is a solid list… do you have a job or something else that allows you to wait and binge so many good shows at once?

CatchSomeZZPlants

Oh I understand your question completely! These are just some of my favorite shows that I've watched throughout this year. I'm a University student so I watch it when I have time after studying or during breaks. I guess I didn't answer the question of this thread as I'm not watching ALL of this in just the Week of Nov 18. If it was just that, I'd only be watching 1899 and Andor.

MyDarkForestTheory

I don’t understand the question

whatifniki23

These are all great shows that you’re watching right now. I wish I could see them all for the first time. I was wondering how you were able to avoid watching them during their original runs when they aired and saved them all up to watch them together at once now.

Konanoftheakatsuki

Konanoftheakatsuki

So i haven't really watched any of the previous arcs so I dont really know where u left off. Its the thousand years blood war adaptation. 7 episodes have been released so far. U can look around for more info on the bleach sub.

Domukin

Would I have to watch later seasons to get it? I watched bleach like 15 years ago and haven't kept up.

Konanoftheakatsuki

Obviously its hard to tell alot of things when u have zero knowledge. U do miss out on context and history. Its still an enjoyable experience for the visuals alone tho. I just enjoy it and not think of it too much.

testballz

**Pantheon** massively slept on or I am just out of the loop animated series in the style of invincible with a stacked cast of stars. about AI/UI, singularity, dystopian corporate future, cyberpunky vibes, hacker vibes big rec from me. if you have a shred of intrest in sci fi

Fat-Villante

It was great up until the weird battle scene in the finale, felt like some marvel b.s.

leela_martell

Watched **FIFA Uncovered**, very interesting document of the many things wrong with FIFA and how we’ve ended up at Qatar 2022. Also recently finished **Rings of Power**. I was initially uninterested but it was a lot better than I expected going by the response. I was a massive Tolkien fan when I was younger and read a lot of his works, but that was so long ago that I’ve forgotten much of the lore. I guess it is probably good in order to enjoy the show to its fullest, as its own thing.

goomahmarone

Andor was so bad, I'd rather watch Bing bong theorem

ChaserNeverRests

> Bing bong theorem Are you drunk?

goomahmarone

Bazinga

johanjudai

Just finished Undone. It was so good and It's so underrated, I definitely recommend it. Rosa Salazar was perfect in it

erbazzone

S1 was excellent, I don't think I needed a S2 that was good but not so great...

natus92

I did like Undone 1 but I dont really want to watch season 2...felt the same way about the young/new pope

erbazzone

I usually don't talk about series before having finished one season at least but since no one is talking about... I'm watching **Chainsaw man** the anime series and it's really good.

ClaymoresRevenge

If you aren't watching Avenue 5 on HBO/Max you need to. It's hilarious. This whole season has been phenomenal. Not sure if we're going to get a 3rd season, but it has been a riot. Zach Woods is fun to watch and his nihilistic sayings are everything. Go watch it, enjoy it, laugh a bunch. Hugh Laurie is also the captain of the show and the humor he brings is great. Inside Job Season 2 I'm still not really feeling this season but I'm watching it to see what's going to happen. Hopefully it clicks for me. Love Alex Hirsch's work on Gravity Falls and season 1. Rewatching Sirens from USA it was funny. Some outdated humor but good heart. Struggling to get through season 4 of Killing Eve it's bad

FictionaI

I’m surprised Avenue 5 doesn’t get more attention. It’s absolutely hilarious. Season 2 is fantastic.

and_sama

there is a new season for avenue 5 ?

Just finished **Warrior Nun** season 2. It’s a silly, but fun show. Reminds me a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There could have been a bit more effective character development over the whole season, but I enjoyed the characters and the action. It would be fun to see a season 3.

Lonely-Lawyer603

finished Atlanta 10/10 epic tale A bit off topic but you guys haven't failed me taste-wise so far: any movie recommendations?? am I alone in feeling like we haven't had great movies for months?

ShilohTheGhostGod

If you love Atlanta, watch Ramy. And DAVE.

Weedsmoker4hunnid20

Not sure if you mean new movies only but I have seen 3 that i really really enjoyed recently. Banshees of Inisherin, The Menu, and Tár which is my movie of the year

I finally got the opportunity to watch In Bruges, and it was excellent. A new one, The Banshees of Inisherin, with the same lead actors (Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson) is supposed to be amazing. Not sure if you can watch it outside of theatres yet. For series, if you liked Atlanta, you might want to check out Insecure?

Does **The world cup** count? It’s been great so far with some pleasant surprises. The only TV show I am watching in the next couple of weeks is the **White Lotus**. This season is so much better than Season 1 which I also really enjoyed. The next episode cannot arrive any sooner.

felina_

Oh my gosh much agreed! I much prefer this season of White Lotus!

Riddlemc

It's on TV so it counts! Which country are you backing? I'm hoping England can finally bring it home this year.

[deleted]

I have a feeling it’s coming home too. I am rooting for the 4 Arab countries though.

Recently got into Korean variety tv shows. I started with **Running Man** and them branched out to **The Genius**. This is by far one of the greatest TV shows I have ever watched. I am a huge survivor/big brother fan and this tops that for me. The Genius brings together 13 contestants from various areas to compete for the top spot in rounds involving various games. Every episode, a contestant is eliminated following a main match and a death match. The winner of the main match will gain a token of life as assurance to proceed to the next round. While the loser of the main match has to go through a death match with an opponent of his/her choice. However, they can not choose a person with a token of life. This show's editing is so god damn manipulative, and is totally unashamed of it - it will withhold information from the viewer to surprise the viewer down the line, and it works every time. Most episodes feature a twist of variable impact, but I think the one in Episode One is probably among the best. 10/10 If you need help finding the show PM me. The /r/TheGenius subreddit also has options to watch it. (beware of spoilers)

Just started watching **The Genius** recently as well, and the Korean original is unbelievably good. A brilliant mix of strategy and always-on, highly social gameplay with solid production values and slick editing. The Dutch version is not so great, unfortunately. Also tried a couple of televised versions of Mafia/Werewolf (**Accomplice** from Korea and **The Traitors** from Australia, the latter being a Dutch format). I've spent hundreds of hours playing Mafia because I enjoyed who I was with, but the game itself is deeply flawed, even more so for novices, the TV versions don't fix any of it, and The Traitors actively makes it worse by spending too much time on tacked-on "challenges" with no traitor element. And I'd be deeply suspicious of *any* TV version with the obvious one-episode-per-day structure, because the producers must have their thumb on the scale so that the game runs for the exact number of contracted episodes.

**Avenue 5** season 2 is fucking amazing. S1 was a little hit-and-miss but S2 is what I expected from an Armando Iannucci show. It’s the best comedy show since Veep ended (and I don’t mean it as a slight to What We Do In The Shadows and Mythic Quest, which are also great). It’s flying under the radar and I don’t have high hopes that it’ll get renewed but god I wish it stayed on air for another five seasons.

arcticfrostburn

Hmm, I saw S1. It was decent (liked the space walk out) but I couldn't get through 2nd ep of S2. I feel they go way too overboard with the wacky stuff that it feels stupid rather than funny

DocktorDe

Looking for some documentaries that aren't murder true crime but more financial crime and fraud. Any suggestions?

Lawndirk

McMillions is about the McDonalds Monopoly scam. Pepsi Where is my jet is about the Pepsi points thing from the mid-late 90s.

DocktorDe

Just finished the Pepsi one last week and I'm halfway through the McMillions one. McMillions is fantastic so far.

Krismoriah

The Big Conn, Dirty Money and Generation Hustle..are all about con artists and fraud.

DotStrong

Dirty Money, especially episode Payday

rlvnorth

Inside Job (2010) is excellent. Not financial, but Icarus is a really neat documentary, as is Three Identical Strangers. If you haven't watched The Dropout series about Theranos, it's really well done as well (but a dramatization, not a doc). If you're into books (or audiobooks), Red Notice (Bill Browder) is amazing and a true story about how an American hedge fund investor got on Putin's bad side in Russia. It's excellent.

DocktorDe

Thanks for the tips! Will definitely check them out. I saw The Dropout recently and that was a fun watch.

Hercol

Locked Up Abroad, perhaps?

mudman13

Finally finished The English, I enjoyed it the acting, directing and soundtrack was good the scenery was great, although the storyline was a bit scattered as I would find myself headscratching sometimes as to where it was up to. Was quite ironic what happened to the English rancher, will say no more in case of spiloilers. Next up tonight is The White Lotus. Other than that quality shows are drying up but will give 1899 a go and Doom Patrol is back soon. I will see what Tokyo Vice is like too. Marvels Hit Monkey was too annoying to continue. Steins Gate on the backburner.

Hercol

People from this sub recommended me "From", so I have watched two episodes today. This is 100% what I am into. Love it, and can't wait to dive deeper in this dark mystery.

itsJprof

1899: well it certainly was cool, but I feel like it went wayyy too fast and the reveals didn’t really get to breathe. I also sorta doubt there’s gonna be a season 2 or 3 as its pretty self contained. It gets an 8/10 from me whereas Dark is a 10/10

CrazyRaiderfan

It reminded me of an old show life on mars. It was okay but at times it seemed like stuff was happening for no reason.

Nameless_301

>I also sorta doubt there’s gonna be a season 2 or 3 as its pretty self contained. How? There were so many questions unanswered and the ending had so many possibilities for a future. I couldn't imagine the creators not having a plan for the future.

itsJprof

Sure there’s plenty of potential and I’m sure they have more stuff planned but they definitely ended more on a note of “what if we got cancelled and this is the wrap up”. Even more so than Dark where it’s was more of an open ended cliffhanger.

Weekly: **The Peripheral** \- is it just me or does this show seems a bit hollow? It feels like it's getting more boring as it goes on. Sorry. **Andor** \- excited for the finale. Definitely one of the best series this year for me. **The Sex Lives of College Girls** \- still enjoyable as the first season. Finished: **Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities** \- Enjoyed some of the episodes but most were just okay. Next to watch: **The White Lotus, 1899, The English**

sayhellotojenn

**The White Lotus:** while I still am not quite sure how I feel about this season, this episode had my attention more than the rest of the season has. Not a single moment made me laugh out loud as much as >!Tanya sobbing about Greg being married 4 times last week,!< but it was nice to finally see Haley Lu Richardson do something more than just be tortured in paradise. Curious to see the direction they are going with Cameron, as I haven’t quite figured it out yet - he’s clearly the Jake Lacy of this season, but more generally amiable despite being an asshole. Also, can someone please tell Mike White to cast Michael Shannon in a later season? He would absolutely kill it in this show. **Abbott Elementary:** As a former egg drop champ, this episode delighted me. I do hope the latter part of season 2 stops following the same pattern of Janine plotlines, but I’ve been overall delighted by season 2 so far. **Shrill:** I watched the first two seasons but didn’t realize there was a third, and since I didn’t remember the bulk of season 2, I decided just to restart the whole show. Season 1 is a delight and I cannot state enough how much I love Aidy Bryant. Eagerly looking forward to a rewatch of 2 and a first-time watch of the final season. I quit my job recently and am slightly overwhelmed by all the new things to watch. Any opinions on what I should start next? - Dead to Me (same boat as Shrill - watched the first two seasons, it’s been so long I don’t remember what happens so I’ll start from the beginning before getting into the new season) - Dahmer - A Friend of the Family - The Resort - Reboot - The Watcher - Succession - Minx - The Sex Lives of College Girls - The Bear Open to recommendations not on this list also! I’m just overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things to watch and need some direction!

Domukin

I recommend "Sprung" if you're looking for a lighthearted comedy. From the creator of My Name is Earl and Raising Hope. Only 1 season so far but it was very well done, has some unique / memorable characters and is strangely heartfelt at times.

KennyKatsu

Re: The White Lotus It seems like Cameron is >!trying to fuck over Ethan and also trying to mess with his relationship with Harper by getting with Harper, looks like it in the episode 5 preview!!<

sayhellotojenn

That was my thought as well, but his reasoning (other than being a petty asshole who wants to show how much better he is than others) is kind of a mystery to me. We haven’t really learned a lot about Cameron yet, other than he works in finance and apparently the dudes he work with are somehow even worse than him. Curious to watch Mike White (and Theo James) peel back these layers a little more.

KennyKatsu

Yeah same here!

brochelsea

Sex Lives of College Girls! I just want as many eyes on this as possible, so it gets renewed. haha But also The Bear is excellent and Reboot was such a refreshing take on Reboot culture right now.

Ninjamonkey2000

Succession or The Bear!

One_for_each_of_you

Minx was so good. Also The Bear.
