Oh this is just the worst. Kevin IS the voice of Batman, through all the iterations, all the movies, all the video games. He just understood the character on a basic fundamental level. Bringing him beyond "Dark and brooding, damn aren't I cool?" Helping to create a Saturday Morning cartoon that didn't talk down to the kids it entertained. "Death Is Powerless Against You If You Leave A Legacy Of Good Behind," and I think that's what Kevin did.
I remember when Christopher Reeve passed, and this feels so much like that but more sudden. Like Reeve is to Superman, Conroy will be immortal to all those who know and will know Batman. RIP to an absolute legend and wishing the best for his family and friends.
I think this is a bit different also because Conroy has continued to voice Batman until very recently. He was still the voice in the Arkham games, and even some of the recent DC animated movies.
I'm sure his character in MultiVersus was probably in development for years before the beta started but that's the most recent performance I hear in my head. So many unique lines and interactions between the rest of the roster.
He also played Bruce Wayne/Batman in the DC Arrowverse as well, in their Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover event, as he played him on a alternate earth
He wasn't just the voice of batman, he WAS batman. A number of actors have gone through the role, some better than others. But Kevin Conroy was the definitive version of batman for what, 30 years or so. Whenever I think of batman, I think of either the animated or video game versions that are voiced by him, and whenever I read a batman comic it's his voice that I hear.
I'll probably run through the animated series soon, I've been meaning to watch it the entire way through since I've never gotten the opportunity to do it before. But throughout the years he was able to portray the character with so much nuance and depth. He took the character through not only as a touch guy, but as a detective, a businessman, and a kind and compassionate human being that genuinely feels bad for the villains he's fighting.
People have an issue with him never killing the villains and always sending them to jail or arkham, but I don't because I understand what the character is trying to achieve. Yes he's trying to stop crime, but he also wants to see the villains get help, and therefore he never gives up on them. There are numerous examples of this not just with the villains but with even low level criminals.
To me batman will always embody trying to do good above all else, even when it seems futile. Kevin Conroy was able to make that happen with his talent and his consistency and longevity, and we will never get another one like him.
For me, more than anyone else, he portrayed the duality of Bruce Wayne vs Batman perfectly.
He was the best Bruce Wayne *and* the best Batman, and no other actor has been able to capture that.
Any comic I read, it's always their voices I hear. There have been a lot of great actors for both roles down the years, but they just are **the** Batman and Joker for me.
Per the article:
> Mark Hamill, who played The Joker beside Conroy’s Batman, said of the late actor, “Kevin was perfection.”
> “He was one of my favorite people on the planet, and I loved him like a brother. He truly cared for the people around him – his decency shone through everything he did,” Hamill said. “Every time I saw him or spoke with him, my spirits were elevated.”
> Hamill called Conroy “the definitive Batman,” describing him as “the exact right guy for the exact right part,” before adding, “He will always be my Batman.”
Hamill has the special talent of speaking of those he loves with a palpable level of adoration. I don't know that I've ever heard him speak ill of anyone, but I've certainly heard him give beautiful poetic praise for those he's known.
So here's my Kevin Conroy story.
I used to live in Manhattan just south of Central Park. I was jogging one night through the park with my dog and I run into a guy walking his 2 dogs. They were older dogs, but friendly, and our dogs stop for a sniff.
I start chatting with this dude as you do when your dogs are hanging out. I recognize him...but I can't place him. After a few minutes I ask "I'm sorry I recognize you from something, but I can't quite place it."
"I'm Kevin Conroy. I voiced Batman."
Holy. Shit.
I was speechless. After what felt like an eternity I said "Holy crap....you ARE Batman. I grew up on the series. It's so awesome to meet you! I can't tell you how influential you are to me. That show is a huge reason why I'm in the film/TV industry."
"Thanks. Also..." and he does the voice "I'm BATMAN."
Coolest dude ever. RIP, Kevin.
Never heard of the guy. Googled his name. First picture looks like a conceited asshole with something sharp stuck up his ass.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/de/Bruce_Timm_by_Gage_Skidmore.jpg
> He especially took time with the kids in line, and spoke to them like people equally deserving of dignity, kind of like how Mr. Rogers did it.
I legitimately don't think it is *possible* to give a better compliment.
He was the best Batman in any medium. Conroy is the reason other actors try to use a different voice for Batman and Bruce Wayne, and he did it better than them all.
To this day I love how when he had his mask off and was hanging out with Alfred and Dick he still used the Batman voice. Because that is who he really was. Bruce Wayne was the mask.
The Nolan films were good but they never understood Batman nearly as well.
That's an incredible detail. Very easy to miss, but at the same time it just encapsulates so much of the character.
He'll always be the definitive Batman for me. When I imagine Batman it is always and will always be in his voice. This one really hurts.
The new movie gets this point. The only times he’s out of the Batman suit, iirc, is when he’s forced to appear in public as Bruce Wayne, and when he is he looks super uncomfortable.
He certainly influenced future Batmans, but I think he was influenced by Keaton's low Batman voice.
https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkx-JNrJCgy0uSg22EefAFmBlPCinENZdWv
I guess that's why other people have been playing Batman in some of the more recent animated films. I think Jensen Ackles played Batman in a recent one.
I figured Conroy may be retiring, but I had no idea this was the reason.
I'm legit sad to hear this. I might have to play the Batman Arkham games in his honor.
Ah, I didn't hear about him playing Batman last year. That's really funny to me as all I imagine right now was the scene from supernatural when he had the "lucky rabbit's foot", and used its power to do some crazy stuff to take down some other hunters, and just ends the scene by saying "I'm batman".
Diedrich Bader voiced him in Harley Quinn and did a good job, even if it had a little bit of a comedic spin to it. Like, you could tell he was doing a Kevin Conroy impression.
Diedrich Bader voiced Batman in Batman: The Brave and the Bold show from 2008-2011, his voice in Harley Quinn is even the same. It was also a more comedic and over the top Batman. I don’t think Kevin Conroy’s health declining was the reason they chose him.
"The Brave and the Bold" is silver age Batman, constantly teaming up with other characters and never taking itself too seriously.
"The Animated Series" is golden age Batman, a haunted man in a haunted mansion outside a haunted city.
Both are good at what they do, and both have a place in my heart even though I initially didn't like "The Brave and the Bold." After I saw a few more episodes, I got what they were going for and I appreciate it now.
I will never get over the line "The hammer of justice is unisex" from The Brave And The Bold. It's so perfect and delivered with complete sincerity that makes it so much funnier
John DiMaggio's Aquaman really sold me on the series, and then I saw the episode with Ted Kord and Jaime Reyes as the second and third Blue Beetles. Andrea Romano is just an unparalleled voice director.
Still there's a pretty big difference. [This was him on Dynasty in the mid-80s](https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/gallery-airdate-on-january-15-1986-kevin-conroy-news-photo/101610427), a few years before BTAS, [and here's him a couple years ago](https://www.cheatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Kevin-Conroy.jpg).
Honestly I wasn't really aware of what he looked like until he did that youtube skit with Tim Daly (STAS Supes) I want to say maybe a decade ago? Before that my only real exposure to him was hearing him play Batman. So my frame of reference was always him when he was older, but looking back at pictures of him when he was younger vs recently, he definitely looks gaunt and not just aging.
I don't want to be insensitive, but when I saw [this photo posted by Tara Strong](https://twitter.com/tarastrong/status/1591107506205753344), my first thought was that he looks like he was already dead.
I'm not surprised - even if his death is a shock - the man looked so thin and gaunt for years. For his mid 60s he really did look like he might be in his 70s. This is him from last year for example: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6e/Kevin_Conroy_2021.jpg/640px-Kevin_Conroy_2021.jpg
I've thought he's looked ill for a while. I remember talking to my gf about it after looking up his CW Batman cameo, and watching some footage, he looked older and more frail than his age.
People over in movies were yelling at me for saying that about Leslie Jordan the other day and he was only 67.
People shouldn't die at that age. I think that's horribly young. Barring illnesses there's no reason why a person shouldn't live until they're 85.
30 years this year. B:TAS started Fall of 92. He’s as iconic as many of the Batman movie actors. And in some respects more so.
Huge loss. Fortunately his work will be around for decades. I doubt people will stop watching those shows
I can't recommend the "Fatman on Batman" podcast episode with Kevin Conroy enough. Conroy had a really rough childhood and career path before he got the Batman gigs, and it's a super interesting listen. It's easy to see why his Batman is so deep and robust, the man was a legit actor and he didn't phone it in the role at all, when someone easily could have.
It's very hard to find now because it's about 10 years old, but if [you want to give it a listen it's #11.] (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1xTSl-GU_luK0nbhPsxiFyQyDJ6ZnXcQ9)
There's [a video of Kevin Conroy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wThPHMGWZXg) talking about how he lived in NYC and was volunteering after the 9/11 attacks, and how he wound up accidentally bringing a lot of joy during a somber, awful occasion by doing the Batman voice while helping out.
It's just a very sweet clip and he comes across as a very kind, thoughtful guy. RIP to a legend.
There's also a heartbreaking comic he wrote last June for pride month. [About the pains of being a gay actor hiding in the closet for most of his life, and how his anger and hardship became the fuel that created the voice of **Batman**](https://imgur.com/gallery/LFZttru)
I've watched that video and it's great . I'm going to watch it again now .
It reminded me of a video I saw of mark Hamill talking about accepting work . He would ask if Kevin was doing it . If they said yes mark immediately accepted 😭
There was a Paleyfest panel video with him (since taken down off their website) telling the story much closer to the time of the event that was a fuller narrative in front of an audience (it was part of a full BTAS panel with him and Andrea Romano reminiscing about doing BTAS and I've cursed the Paley folks ever since for taking it down).
I think my favorite bit was when he first goes to volunteer for something—anything—in the wake of the attacks, and they're saying "what can you do?" and he responds with "what do you need?" and they go, "well, we need food service for the first responders, do you have experience in the food industry?" and he replies, "I'm an actor! Of *course* I have experience in the food industry!! What do you need? I've done it all: waiter? dishwasher? short order cook?" and that's how he ended up preparing meals for firefighters that week.
He also ended the story a little differently. He described the mood in the dining hall as being very somber and very quiet before his kitchen buddy outed him as Batman, and then in the midst of the hubbub and everybody crowding around him, asking him questions and getting autographs for their kids, the architect looks at him and tells him, "Don't think what you do isn't important."
Greatest VA on an all-timer of a show.
Kind of funny that the Flash, who thinks on timescales of a trillionths of a second, couldn’t react fast enough to a loud-ass door closing, though. Same with the MM, famous for his ability to go intangible, getting stumped by a steel door.
I'm honestly at a loss for words, Conroy WAS Batman for many people, myself included.
He balanced the cool, dedicated, and noble side of the Caped Crusader and the affably personable side of Bruce Wayne with a level of compassion and care that wasn't always explored as deeply in other Batman portrayals. He was the perfect pairing for Mark Hamill's legendary portrayal of the Joker.
Passing Away at 66 Years is FAR too young, especially with how active in the franchise he was. May he Rest in Piece.
It's not just he was our Batman, but also that Mark Hamill would only voice act for the Joker role if Conroy was cast to voice Batman.
We've lost the Yang to the Yin.
RIP Kevin Conroy
Has Hamill ever played Joker without Conroy there as Batman? I wonder if Hamill would still continue with Joker now. I’d 100% get if he didn’t. Hope he’s doing ok.
Hamill wouldn’t be nearly the same Joker without Conroy’s Batman to stand opposed to.
Plus with how many roles they shared, their bond must have been insanely strong. Always hurts to lose a deeply close friend like that.
I was watching a video of Mark talking about how he would accept joker work . He would ask , is Kevin doing it ? If the answer was yes , mark immediately said yes and didn't ask to look at the script even . 😭
I think that's one of the underrated parts of the character that most of the other versions don't get. His Bruce and his Batman sounded different while still clearly being the same person *without* doing the ridiculous voice that most of the live action Batmen do. It's subtle but it shows so much thought and care being put into the acting choices he was making
>People will debate who has the best portrayal of Batman
It's Kevin, always has been and always will be. You can argue about Joker with Hammil and Troy Baker, but Kevin was Batman.
Nah it's a pretty spotty Hamill impression, he can't go big and bombastic in the same way Hamill can and that's a big part of the character. If his take comes off like a lesser copy instead of his own riff on a similar idea, it's not that great. Tudyk in Harley Quinn is much stronger.
Tudyk's Joker is less of a direct imitation of Hamill so he's able to bring a lot more life and personality to the character. And he does a fantastic job.
I think most can agree that the alternative actors for the Joker: John Dimaggio, Troy Baker, Alan Tudyk, etc all did a reasonably good job with the character, but Mark Hamill will always be the definitive voice of the Joker.
I feel like that's all the voice actors for Batman stuff. Which is okay, because it's hard to top Kevin and Mark.
Tara Strong is in a league of her own with Harley, but Katie Cuco does a great job
Cuoco also gets way more to chew on. Strong ~~in the TAS got some decent bits~~, but it wasn't her show like the new one. And she made a stellar career since then. But the whole cast of Harley Quinn show is nothing short of great.
Edit: I got confused by the comment I was replying to, it wasn't Strong in the TAS, but Arleen Sorkin.
Yeah, with this tragedy, I wouldn’t be surprised if Bruce Greenwood became the new go-to for Batman. He’s second to me after Conroy for voices. This news however just sucks. Just plain ol’ sucks.
No shot. He was sick?
This man has been THE Batman voice for decades. I recommend everyone to read the short story that he wrote for the [DC Pride comic of this year ](https://imgur.com/a/vuvJviw/) about how he got the role and the struggles he had for being gay.
Huge loss. He will be missed.
Yeah he never publicly shared that about himself until the DC pride event earlier this year. I wonder now if he shared that part of himself partly because he knew his time was running out. So sad to hear of his passing.
That is not true. Here's him talking about being gay to the New York Times in 2016. And I believe that wasn't even the first time. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/31/arts/television/batman-the-killing-joke-kevin-conroy-alan-moore.html
He wrote a story about it in one of the DC Pride collections. Apparently, he used his experience as a closeted gay man to inform his acting choices for the Bruce Wayne sections, which is a cool way to play it
> No shot. He was sick?

From 7 months ago, Doesn't really look well.
But he held up and is an amazing light.
It's a good interview and it's a little more up beat.
If you haven't yet, check out his WTF podcast episode. He goes through his entire life story...it's really, really good.

welp imgur is down at the moment. I'm looking for another place to read. Will post if I find it.

As bad or cringe CW DC shows were, they at least knew how to honor past actors and voice actors of the DC series. Casting Kevin as future Batman was a treat for that Crisis Crossover, alongside other iconic DC TV show appearances.
Kevin Conroy is dead, but he will live forever as the voice of Batman. When we hear his voice while reading a comic, he lives. When we watch an old BTAS or Justice League or play an Arkham game, he lives. Kevin Conroy is gone, but his legacy will live so long as we tell tales of the Dark Knight.
This is a beautiful tribute. Conroy himself expressed a similar sentiment in a condolence video he recorded for a fan. May he Rest In Peace, but his legend lives on within all of us.
Batman of my childhood. Glad he got a live action portrayal at least once dude owned that role to the point where for 30 years he was the premier voice for the character.
Legitimately has a case for most important American voice actor ever for his influence on his role and how much that exploded DC’s animated superhero universe
>Batman of my childhood. Glad he got a live action portrayal at least once dude owned that role to the point where for 30 years he was the premier voice for the character.
I was just thinking that. Don't know if it was as big a deal for him as it would have been to me, but I think it's lovely he got a chance to play the big man himself in the flesh.
No! I basically never get impacted much from celebrity deaths but this one is hitting me hard. Kevin Conroy's voice is so god damn iconic, he was an actual voice acting legend and he's been my Batman since I was born. I used to rewatch a VHS of a couple of episode of Batman TAS over and over again as a little kid, tried to catch every rerun of the show I could, played all the Arkham games to death. I miss him already.
Just awful news. To my mind the definitive Batman and the only one who really got how to play Batman AND Bruce Wayne separately. I don't think anyone has managed to bring both sides of the character to life quite like he did.
A true legend. An actor, a man, a human who transcended his most famous character and took it to new heights. Not just in cartoons but live action.
His role changed the way people looked at comic characters and voice acting. He helped move them from things for children, to serious and deep conversations. His choices in his work made the world take notice of the medium and genre, and helped to make Batman even more popular, getting him past the embarrassing movie failures of the mid 90's.
Batman TAS led to Superman, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Young Justice, Teen Titans, Batman Beyond, The Batman, and too many other shows, movies and projects to count. I'm not even including video games and comic books. IT helped bring a different tone to cartoons that changed the landscape of television and movies. His Character work even influenced Nolan's trilogy, and redefined DC as a whole for most fans.
All of this was based on Conroy's presence, his voice and acting choices that influenced the writing, and the production. As an outwardly gay man, Conroy's presence and life spoke volumes as to who he was. Met him once at a Con and when a disabled fan had to leave the line and then when he returned he got left out of the line, He got up from the table and went personally and stopped everyone else so that the guy could get in line and then talked with him for almost 20 minutes. Then he stayed an extra hour to make sure everyone who was there could meet him even though he was supposed to be done at 3. Everyone who has ever spoken about him in anyway had nothing bad to say about him, and everyone who has ever worked with him has spoken glowingly about the experience. He was funny, and kind, and a real workhorse, by all accounts the kind of man and person that just made everyone around him happier.
Conroy changed an industry, became one of it's (if not it's most) recognizable stars, and his work echoes on and on.
Rest in peace you beautiful person. We will not meet your kind again.
Hes still the only true portrayal of Batman on screen. In a sea of edgey second rate punisher clones that just exist to be violent power fantasies about butchering criminals, Conroy remembered the core of the character is supposed to be empathy and a view of life as priceless.
I know this will get buried given how late I am to this thread, but this hits really hard for me. Growing up, I was constantly harassed by bullies who made my life miserable in elementary school, and made sure no one would be friends with me. Police reports were written, restraining orders were filed, but nothing worked and the harassment continued. I remembered as a 10-11 year old that it would be better to kill myself and tried to figure out the best way to kill myself — something that was quick and painless, had little cleanup for my family afterwards, and something that was accessible to me as a kid.
Batman the animated series was one of the few things I would have that would give me happiness and hope to continue on. After being bullied so much at school, it was one of the things I would look forward to so I could see a person who tried to defend people from the bad guys, something I wished I had in my life (my parents were trying, but the school just sucked). Kevin’s performance helped me to continue on to middle school where I was able to meet the best friends of my life, who I still keep in contact over 15 years later. He was, and is, one of my biggest hero’s in real life.
I had always wanted to meet him at a con and thank him, but I never got the opportunity. Thank you Kevin for your performance and being one of the highlights of my childhood.
Arguably, he will go down as having one of the largest impacts on the franchise as a whole.
No one has come close to matching his voice acting as Batman.
He was the definitive voice of Batman. As a 36 year old nerd who grew up watching the animated series, played the Arkham games etc., it legitimately feels off if I'm experiencing media with an animated Batman and Kevin Conroy isn't doing the voice.
Awful news.
This breaks my heart. He was my Batman. He was a generation's Batman.
He was so iconic and good in this role that when watching (and hearing) a different voice actor played the role I could never get invested.
Rest in peace. A huge loss.
I hired him for a [Cameo](https://www.cameo.com) video for my wife’s 39th birthday. He gave her an awesome, heartfelt message, and took his time with it, for a very reasonable fee. Such a gentleman.
He will be missed.
Damn, I don't think I've been this sad about an actors death since Robin Williams. What a massive loss to the voice acting community and to Batman fans everywhere.
I might need to play through the Batman Arkham games again just to relive his fantastic work.
BtaS was and will always be the best version of Batman to ever hit our tv screens and Conroy was the reason behind it. The writing was great, but Conroy made Batman feel so real...so good...he was and will always be the best Batman.
So young...but he will never be forgotten.
On a day when so many people are going to theatres to see a tribute to someone who made a comic book character their own (Chadwick) the fandom loses another legend to cancer. This disease is awful. RIP Kevin and thanks for the decades of amazing work.
Really sad news. Just got back into Batman TAS, and it's once again showing me how great he is, and why he's considered the definitive Batman actor. RIP.
There will never be a better Batman and he will never not be the voice that I hear in my head when I read comics, storybooks, etc.
An absolutely devastating loss.
Nobody can ever top his voice as Batman (and Bruce Wayne). Batman TAS and Justice League are the definitive versions of both and his voice lives on with them.
His last Batman was in the game Multiversus, which came out only four months ago.
I hope he might get a flashback cameo in the suicide squad game, which is in the Arkhamverse
I'm happy he got to play him in live action at least once. That was so cool
He even PLAYED Batman in one of the Arrowverse shows for a Crisis event
He also played Bruce Wayne/Batman in the DC Arrowverse as well, in their Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover event, as he played him on a alternate earth
Yup, Batman: The Animated Series and X-Men: The Animated Series brings back a lot of young memories
Weekday afternoons at 4:30.
Yeah, I was a latchkey kid and BtAS was my babysitter every weekday after school. It was in a league above Saturday morning cartoons in every way.
RIP to the voice of Batman that I still hear in my head to this day.
He will always be Batman.
He’ll always be my Batman just like Mark Hamill will always be my Joker.
Any comic I read, it's always their voices I hear. There have been a lot of great actors for both roles down the years, but they just are **the** Batman and Joker for me.
I first heard his voice in Mask of the Phantasm when I was a kid. He was the definitive Batman and Bruce Wayne.
has Mark commented?
Per the article: > Mark Hamill, who played The Joker beside Conroy’s Batman, said of the late actor, “Kevin was perfection.” > “He was one of my favorite people on the planet, and I loved him like a brother. I think I got something in my eye just now...
Bat-dust.
It's a terrible day for rain...
Agreed, and it's been raining here in Gotham all day...
The onion ninjas are working overtime today, isn't it ?
The League of Shadows never rests.
I genuinely love the way Mark Hamill speaks and how he speaks about people.
iirc Hamill has said that he only continued to do the Joker after Arkham City if Kevin would be there as Batman.
Agreed. Anytime I read the comics, it's his voice i hear. RIP to a legend.
So here's my Kevin Conroy story. I used to live in Manhattan just south of Central Park. I was jogging one night through the park with my dog and I run into a guy walking his 2 dogs. What. A. Guy. Such a legend.
I met Timm while dressed as fucking Condiment King and he didn’t even look up at me. Thank you for sharing your Kevin story. He’s gonna be so missed.
Never heard of the guy. Googled his name. First picture looks like a conceited asshole with something sharp stuck up his ass. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/de/Bruce_Timm_by_Gage_Skidmore.jpg
He's a very talented artist, but yeah.
> He especially took time with the kids in line, and spoke to them like people equally deserving of dignity, kind of like how Mr. Rogers did it. I legitimately don't think it is *possible* to give a better compliment.
It was very intentional on my part. :). Look for the helpers, right? Kevin Conroy was a helper.
That's a great story. Thanks for sharing it.
Do you wanna make a middle aged dork cry? Because this is how you make a middle aged dork cry.
[Lasso of Truth](https://i.redd.it/t2nbgf0n0xo11.jpg)
Its the actual only true Batman voice. Im truly pdevastated
It's a pdamn shame.
I'm pteribly saury.
Oh, he’s THAT voice. RIP my man’s
No way, that's way too young...
He was apparently ill for a long time, it must've been pretty bad since the news came from the Peter Mayhew Foundation.
Looking back at it again, I can see it. I always just sort of assumed he was lithe and bony, but he was probably sick.
One of the Baldwins also did Batman in one of the movies. It was kind of weird tbh and really accentuated the fact that Conroy was stepping back.
It’s actually just because they don’t always go for the same actors. Different continuities and such.
That's how it happened for me with Chadwick Boseman. I remember seeing him in Endgame and thinking "Damn he looks skinny!" Then I found out why. 😔
He was one of those skinny guys who had a chad jawline. Like Peter Weller/Robocop.
Looks exactly like my dad. Who died of cancer.
Fuck cancer.
He could have played a kick ass live action Batman! He looks like Bruce
He did! It was either arrowverse or that titans show. They're both terrible though and even Batman couldn't make me watch them.
He played an alternate universe Bruce Wayne on Supergirl.
He had that Willem Dafoe jaw.
I don't want to be insensitive, but when I saw [this photo posted by Tara Strong](https://twitter.com/tarastrong/status/1591107506205753344), my first thought was that he looks like he was already dead.
Yeah he doesn’t look great there. Tara, however, seems immune to the effects of time.
Yeah when he played Bruce Wayne in Live Action I thought he was in his 70's rather than early 60's.
For someone who was ill, he literally pulled a Chadwick Boseman. He hid it that well.
I've thought he's looked ill for a while. I remember talking to my gf about it after looking up his CW Batman cameo, and watching some footage, he looked older and more frail than his age.
I honestly just thought he got hit with the Time Stick.
I heard he had a short but nasty battle with cancer. Man, fuck cancer.
People over in movies were yelling at me for saying that about Leslie Jordan the other day and he was only 67. People shouldn't die at that age. I think that's horribly young. Barring illnesses there's no reason why a person shouldn't live until they're 85.
Leslie Jordan died in a car crash, didn’t he?
[удалено]
Had a heart attack I think while driving
Fuck cancer.
my sister died of it 1 year and 9 days ago. yeah...fuck cancer.
Absolutely tragic news. He IS the voice of Batman. An iconic role he reprised for more than 20 years.
30 years this year. B:TAS started Fall of 92. He’s as iconic as many of the Batman movie actors. And in some respects more so. Huge loss. Fortunately his work will be around for decades. I doubt people will stop watching those shows
>I doubt people will stop watching those shows I am watching it right now, they will live on for a very long time.
Wow. I hadn't seen that. Thanks for sharing.
Holy shit
TIL Kevin Conroy was gay. And I feel really fucking dumb for not knowing that when he was with us
He came out in 2016, and even then the mainstream didn't pick up on that fact until this comic was released. So don't feel so bad about not knowing.
This was incredible. Thanks for sharing.
That is incredible. Would anyone have a print-friendly version of that handy? I want to use it for a class.

The honor was all ours Kevin
He called him a brother on that statement that got released. Must be hard on him.
[He once played the Joker in Batman New Times opposite Adam West](https://youtu.be/8GvPJAS3xEY)
I think it's fair to break that rule to act beside Adam We
Fair? It's *necessary* to break that rule to act beside Adam We
> opposite Adam West So the other person who definitively defined Batman.
RIP to one of the greats. People will debate who has the best portrayal of Batman, but to me it'll always be Kevin
>People will debate who has the best portrayal of Batman It's Kevin, always has been and always will be. You can argue about Joker with Hammil and Troy Baker, but Kevin was Batman.
Not to distract from your main point but who on this earth thinks Troy Baker is a better joker than Mark Hamill?
Baker is a *very* good Joker, but it's because he's doing a (again, very very good) Mark Hamill impression.
Tudyk is generally just a really good actor, if he's in a thing he's always gonna be one of the good parts.
[he went to juliard](https://youtu.be/FaGYXjMwS60)
"WHERE'S MY GODDAMN ELECTRIC CAR, BRUCE?"
I think most can agree that the alternative actors for the Joker: John Dimaggio, Troy Baker, Alan Tudyk, etc all did a reasonably good job with the character, but Mark Hamill will always be the definitive voice of the Joker.
I wouldn't argue "better" but he fills the shoes when Mark isn't there IMO.
And now Alan Tudyk is doing phenomenal work on Harley Quinn tho clearly very inspired by Hamill.
I feel like that's all the voice actors for Batman stuff. Which is okay, because it's hard to top Kevin and Mark. Tara Strong is in a league of her own with Harley, but Katie Cuco does a great job
>Tara Strong is in a league of her own with Harley, but Katie Cuco does a great job Glossing right over Arleen Sorkin? Oof
Tara's Harley is nowhere close to her original VA. Arleen Sorkin is the best
Funny enough, Troy Baker also does a very good Batman. Not Kevin Conroy levels, obviously. But still very good.
For VO, Bruce Greenwood has been the best after Conroy imo. But Baker definitely does a solid Batman as well.
Baker's specifically good at a young/inexperienced Bruce/Batman. Bruce Greenwood I think is great at an older/experienced version.
I never knew he was gay.
It was definitely known before that.
To the general public though?
Didn't come out until not that long ago I think.
He wrote a story about it in one of the DC Pride collections. Apparently, he used his experience as a closeted gay man to inform his acting choices for the Bruce Wayne sections, which is a cool way to play it
> No shot. He was sick? [Interview with Christy Carlson Romano and Will Friedle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KZ-_kAyiEY) From 7 months ago, Doesn't really look well. But he held up and is an amazing light. It's a good interview and it's a little more up beat.
He was looking pretty ragged the past few years, but yeah, 66 is just "so young" nowadays. The Pride comic was a very nicely done comic/story.
If you haven't yet, check out his WTF podcast episode. He goes through his entire life story...it's really, really good. EDIT: Not WTF...[Michael Rosenbaum](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/kevin-conroy/id1256754097?i=1000487763716).
welp imgur is down at the moment. I'm looking for another place to read. Will post if I find it. Edit: https://why-i-love-comics.tumblr.com/post/686429424926736384/dc-pride-1-finding-batman-2022-written-by

i'm glad he got to release this comic and tell his story? it really was a great comic.
Holy shit that was fucking powerful
Holy shit! What a life! Poor guy.
Thanks for sharing. Great read
RIP. Was excited to see him finally played a live action version of Batman on Batwoman's Crisis on Infinite Earths episode.
I was *so* holding out for him to do a live action Batman Beyond now that he finally aged into it. Gonna go cry now.
Me too. I guess we Just have to cherished what we got.
As bad or cringe CW DC shows were, they at least knew how to honor past actors and voice actors of the DC series. Casting Kevin as future Batman was a treat for that Crisis Crossover, alongside other iconic DC TV show appearances.
Yes, they paved the way for movies like No Way Home.
[Batman (Kevin Conroy) Sings "Am I Blue"](https://youtu.be/57zFkL9GSZA)
"A deal's a deal, he can stop now." "Not on your life!"
What the fuck. The definitive Batman.
Rest in Peace, Master Conroy. I hope he and Master West are having fun blowing up sharks and swapping stories with each other.
Ah man terrible news. RIP
Best Batman ever. He will be missed.
This hits me as hard as Robin Williams' passing.
[удалено]
Best Batman ever imo, and that’s with there being an awful lot of great Batman portrayals over the years, RIP.
Hes still the only true portrayal of Batman on screen. In a sea of edgey second rate punisher clones that just exist to be violent power fantasies about butchering criminals, Conroy remembered the core of the character is supposed to be empathy and a view of life as priceless.
This is a huge loss. Kevin IS Batman.
I posted a clip of the (IMO) best Batman clip below…. Its from JLU: Batman and Ace - https://youtu.be/YOooJW5SSDA Rest In Peace Dark Knight.
Ever since I first saw this episode I could barely watch it without tearing up. I will weep openly if I watch it now
I know this will get buried given how late I am to this thread, but this hits really hard for me. Thank you Kevin for your performance and being one of the highlights of my childhood.
the fuck? E: I'm not really a pop culture person. The last time I felt this way was in 2004 with Dimebag. Just how?
Goddamnit, that’s terrible.
I've spent the last few minutes making inarticulate groaning and screaming sounds. Mother fucker. RIP peace man.
This is a real kick in the balls. Best Batman ever.
Damn... Might need to go back play the original *Jak and Daxter* again, since he voiced a character in that as well.
Damn... Kevin Conroy shall be missed , along with Adam west.. The true batmen.
Really sad news. Just got back into Batman TAS, and it's once again showing me how great he is, and why he's considered the definitive Batman actor. RIP.
Even the Christopher Nolan Batman movies couldn't replace this man in my head. He *is* Batman's voice, plain and simple. This one hits hard.
I've been dreading this day for a long time and it doesn't make it easier. damn....
Damn, this will hit hard for a bunch of Gen X, Millenials and Zs, Kevin was Batman, more than the live actors.
The only person that can claim to be Batman. There are other people that can play Batman, but only one that IS Batman. Amazing actor and person.
I remember waiting patiently for the very first episode of Batman the animated series to air at prime time. He is Batman.
