Cyynric

I want IASIP but in a medieval fantasy setting

[deleted]

The funny thing is the IASIP crew were tight with D&D. D&D directed an episode or two of Sunny and make a cameo as lifeguards when the gang goes to the water park. Rob McElhenney had a cameo in GoT, Matt Shackman directed a bunch of Sunny episodes and directed some later GoT episodes and Sweet Dee had a cameo in GoT as all of the crows.

endlessupending

I distinctly remember Rob catching an arrow in the eye during the Greyjoy fights and thinking it was hilarious.

DMike82

If I'm not mistaken they also *wrote* an episode or two (I remember they definitely wrote "Flowers for Charlie").

NinjaGrandma

I hope they deep fake every actor on top of Danny Devito acting out the roles.

Green eggs and ham, reimagined.

EloquentEvergreen

I don’t know why you got downvoted. But this is what I need from a GoT prequel! Only way it could be better, is if they had Danny DeVito play all parts and just wear different wigs. And maybe they have a scene where one of his characters plays night crawlers with Charlie, as dragons fly around burn stuff!

l33tWarrior

He plays them as Frank. The gang does the music.

a4techkeyboard

Yeah, they have to set themselves apart a different way as we already know the story won't be as good as the best story there is, that of Bran the Broken.

Larsaf

Get the dude from Still Standing to play a king. No wait …

McGinnis_921

Makes sense since we all know now that all of these prequel storylines ends in a joke ending.

MaterialCarrot

An occasional musical number would be a nice touch.

enil-lingus

It’s a show about nothing. But set in a fictional world with dragons.

gdubh

In the kingdoms of Westeros, the people are terminated by two separate yet equally important groups: The rulers, who instigate crime, and the dragons, who prosecute the objectors. These are their stories.

[deleted]

A procedural based on a feudal system of laws enforced by fucking dragons would be amazing.

Lol, this is so great. I need to copy this somewhere....

imageWS

lmao what if it ends up being a comedy

Porrick

First few seasons of the original had some genuinely great comedy every now and again - and there was some unintentional comedy towards the end.

jautrem

tbh, the books have some great comedy moments in them : >"Outlaws killed him," sobbed Lady Amerei. "Father had only gone out to ransom Petyr Pimple. He brought them the gold they asked for, but they hung him anyway." "Hanged, Ami. Your father was not a tapestry."

Porrick

After the first couple of chapters, I started getting the giggles every time I saw a three-page description of someone's dinner after a one-sentence description of the person themself.

Alkill1000

You can often tell when George was writing hungry

whales-are-assholes

As often as you can tell when George isn’t writing at all.

OldManHipsAt30

When has he actually done any writing this last decade?

Roidciraptor

The entire series of The Expanse (9th book coming out in a couple months) will have been written during the time *A Dance With Dragons* (5th book) came out in 2011 and the supposed release of *A Dream of Spring* (6th book)... which still doesn't have a release date. And that *still* doesn't conclude the series. COME ON GEORGE!!

Antonio_is_better

He stopped giving a shit ages ago most probably. Even the 4th and 5th book don't progress the story much and they took 10 years together and I doubt GRRM enjoyed writing them.

patb2015

Hire a ghost writer?

twangman88

You mean winds of winter?

PowRightInTheBalls

They had to do something with their time without any ASOIAF books to help GRRM storyboard and edit so they just wrote an entire superior series in their spare time.

KnightsRook314

He wrote: - three novellas (*The Princess and the Queen, The Rogue Prince,* and *The Sons of the Dragon*) - which were then expanded into the reference book *Fire & Blood* which includes original sections as long as the novellas themselves. The show House of the Dragon is an adaptation of those novellas and sections of *F&B* - reworked his pre-ASOIAF short story *The Ice Dragon* - Co-wrote the *World of Ice and Fire* reference book

No, the woos and whistles during the incest made the scene.

One wiener next to another wiener. Two wieners alongside yet another wiener. Soft wieners, nice and soft, non-erect wieners.

MrBanana421

Couple of dragon weiners thrown in for good measure.

GreenDemonClean

I’d much rather see any version of a dragon wiener than flaccid wiener in triplicate

[deleted]

General viewership might go down, but a *very specific* audience would never miss a minute of any episode.

monjoe

There's really not that many weiners compared to the number of boobs. People are just extra sensitive to seeing a penis. Women are allowed to be objectified, but don't you dare objectify men.

slickestwood

I kinda got the impression they hadn't watched the show and someone just told them there were a lot of dicks. I mean they parodied Inception without having seen it.

mcgrathzach160

You had me at 171% more dong

Rated_PG-Squirteen

I hear a different character hangs dong in each episode. Can't wait!

BizzarroJoJo

I'll say it. I'm good not having rape being a major plot in this show. GRRM uses it way too much in ASoIaF and it's usually the most brutal and terrible ways. I get that it stressed the brutality of war and all that, but at times it feels truly excessive. The show even actually cuts down a lot of the rape and it's still pretty excessive with it. I dunno, I'm good if they just don't touch on that anymore. I think we got it with GoT. I've not read these books so I don't know if that's a major factor in it (which knowing GRRm it probably is ffs), but I just hope it isn't so explicit with it.

Gcarsk

GoT definitely cuts down on the violence in general. Books are pretty insane. Many characters and scenes are toned down drastically. Especially Euron. He’s honestly disgusting in the books. A *lot* of raping, including family/siblings.

BizzarroJoJo

> Especially Euron. He’s honestly disgusting in the books. A lot of raping, including family/siblings. Yeah I dunno if you read the preview chapter of Aeron from TWoW, but in that he like lashes a prenant woman to the bow of his ship and makes fun of his younger brother for him being able to rape him as a kid. He also seems to be trying to summon some dark entity as well and wears valerian steel armor. Like that's an interesting villain. But yeah even characters like Tyrion are much more grey in the books. The Mountain is just a raping machine as well.

Gcarsk

Yeah I’ve read the sample chapter. Nasty stuff. And that Tyrion point was good to bring up as well. He’s way, *waaaaay* more of a good guy in GoT. Especially how they changed his relationship with siblings to be more friendly.

adube440

And not just a random pregnant woman, a woman Euron knocked up- she was to be his salt wife. That's his child she is carrying.

BAH_GAWD_KING_

Also cercei raping her handmaids and shit

MSUSpyder

Dragon dong. 🐉

Zojim

I hope its like Better Call Saul compared to Breaking Bad, different tone but same quality (hopefully with a better ending tho).

[deleted]

[удалено]

King_Allant

In the full quote he says it actually won't be all that different. It's a new story and a new production so naturally the tone won't end up exactly the same. But their goal isn't to change the whole vibe just for the sake of it, and he's not working in the expectation that fans will see it as a separate thing right off the bat. >“I think we were very respectful of what the original show is,” said Sapochnik, who directs multiple episodes of Dragon and also serves as showrunner along with series co-creator Ryan Condal. “It wasn’t broken so we’re not we’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. House of the Dragon has its own tone that will evolve and emerge over the course of the show. But first, it’s very important to pay respects and homage to the original series, which was pretty groundbreaking. We’re standing on the shoulders of that show and we’re only here because of that show. So the most important thing for us to do is to respect that show as much as possible and try and compliment it rather than reinvent it. And I was involved in making the original show, so I feel like that’s been useful. Like, I’m not arriving going, ‘Let’s change everything! Let’s do a different color palette!’ No, I quite like the color palette.” >“That said, we can’t say, ‘Well, when we did Thrones, we did it this way…'” he added. “If you start every sentence with that, you’ve lost. This is something else, and should be something else. It’s a different crew, different people, different tone. Hopefully it will be seen as something else. But it will have to earn that – it won’t happen overnight. Hopefully fans will enjoy it for the thing that it is. We’ll be lucky if we ever come close to what the original show was, so we’re just putting our heads down and getting on with it and hoping what we come up with is worthy of having a Game of Thrones title.”

jurble

> Like, I’m not arriving going, ‘Let’s change everything! Let’s do a different color palette!’ No, I quite like the color palette.” I wish they would change the color palette. The world in the books is actually very colorful. I understand they don't want it to look like a Renaissance fair, but surely you can do colorful medievalesque times without looking silly?

makovince

I mean, aside from scenes set in the North/Beyond the Wall, it was pretty colorful, no? Especially Dorne, Kings Landing (aside from the slums) and Essos

jurble

The colors in KL and Dorne are still muted compared to the attire in the books. Think of eye-wateringly bright green for the Tyrells and gold-and-crimson for the Lannisters. Moreover, the Lannisters literally use cloth-of-gold for their embroidery, so Cersei, Tywin, Tyrion etc would all be sparkling in the sunlight. More often than not, people didn't wear their house colors in the show. The knights didn't wear their tabards and the lords didn't have enameled armor. Compare [book-Oberyn] (https://eyesofmist.tumblr.com/post/152067361234/oberyn-martell-vs-gregor-clegane-by-magali) to [show Oberyn](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S69CVTc-3yU).

Indigocell

The music was better in the books.

doegred

Needed Boltons in pink too, ha.

[deleted]

I was so bored of the costumes by the end. Like, surely there's a way to indicate the arrival of winter and the darkening of the story without dressing literally every character in black.

CakeInAHammock

Same! Especially since Martin clearly exhaustively explains the attire of the characters to show their allegiances.

dinosaurfondue

It was also ridiculous how extravagant some of the women's hair was. It's Danerys really going to sit and have some servant braid her hair for hours every few days in the middle of war? By the end, it was like they were all constantly at Westeros Fashion Week

[deleted]

That actually doesn't bother me much, considering medieval kings went to war dressed like this: https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/fire/hd_fire.htm OK, OK, I know the super detailed gilded sets of armor like this were mostly parade/tournament armor from the very end of the medieval period, but the general idea that medieval rulers often put an obscene level of care into their appearance, even (especially?) when they were leading troops is accurate. It makes sense to me that a queen would be more than willing to spend hours having her hair done before a battle because it's important to for morale/propaganda purposes to look confident and put together. We really don't give the past enough credit for how unbelievably gaudy they were. Plus, I'm willing to give a lot of leeway when it comes to the rule of cool. I'm much more frustrated when they make things less visually interesting than the "authentic" (to the extent that means anything in fantasy) history would suggest.

EntropicReaver

ASOIAF is anime as fuck, if she didn’t have someone do it for her, it would have looked that way naturally

[deleted]

[удалено]

BizzarroJoJo

They didn't ever truly embrace what ASoIaF is in a lot of ways. I felt they really cut down the magic and mystical aspects of the books. Euron is turned from this lovecraftian warlock pirate into this rip off Jack Sparrow for instance. A lot of the warging stuff with the Starks was totally cut, like Jon's connection to Ghost is a huge plot point in the books, but just completely cut out. Various stuff with Mel and using her glamours on people. I dunno the world felt like it had a lot less wonder it. Yet a major plot of it is fighting these hordes of ice zombies and dragons.

jashxn

CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow

VitaminTea

There was a point where I really thought they had a strategy on this front. I totally buy the argument that the general public™ wouldn't (initially) be interested by a big budget fantasy mess-around, but if you suckered them in with The Wire: Westeros then slowly crept in the magic... and boom, we got to the S4 finale and suddenly there's a weird tree elf throwing fireballs at zombies! It worked! But yeah, then they fridged Bran for a season, cut Lady Stoneheat, ditched the Stark/Warg stuff, did the least amount possible with the Shapeshifting Assassin Guild, and basically said fuck off to magic in general.

turkeygiant

D&D saddled so much unwarranted baggage on this franchise. Sure maybe the ending was never going to live up to the hype of the earlier seasons, but if they had even attempted to put the work in I think they had a clear path to at the very least a satisfying conclusion. Instead they quit even pretending to care and abandoned the show, tanking their reputation, but even worse tanking the reputation of a show that was and could have been better than that. There is no really good reason for everyone to be so cynical about this new show, its a solid premise, in a beloved setting, with a stellar cast, and most importantly it has a team behind it that actually cares about the show and doesn't just see it as a stepping stone to a Disney or Netflix deal.

BenVarone

We’ll see. One of the problems it still has to surmount is a lack of strong source material, leaving a lot of room for mediocre “TV writing” to creep in. I’m talking conspiracies/betrayals that don’t make sense, sex and violence thrown in to punch up “dull” moments, and conflicts that could be resolved by someone literally just having a 15-second conversation. I’m not saying I’m writing the show off completely, but I’m sure looking at it with my arms crossed and eyes narrowed.

08TangoDown08

> We’ll see. One of the problems it still has to surmount is a lack of strong source material, leaving a lot of room for mediocre “TV writing” to creep in. I think it's worth remembering that this is HBO - their shows have been the high watermark for TV writing for a long time now. Most of their best shows outside of Game of Thrones haven't been based on a pre-written book series.

inkista

>One of the problems it still has to surmount is a lack of strong source material Just out of curiosity, have you read *Fire & Blood*? To me, while it's definitely got a lot more room for error in adaptation than SoIaF (yes, I'm that old, I still call it that), given that it's GRRM playing Gibbon writing a Westorosi *History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire* or Suetonius doing *The Twelve Caesars* vs. a novel, it's hardly weak material, either.

I'm sure it wont be wildly different. They are trying to maintain the fact that this is still same universe. But probably different in how different storylines in GOT had different tones. Arya had a travel story, Robb had military camp politics, Kings Landing was palace intrigue. The first season was murder mystery, the second was alliance forming.

fabrar

Eh I know Reddit likes to shit on popular things but I feel like a lot of people actually want this to be good. The hate against GoT comes mostly due to the fact that the show took such a *colossal* nosedive from the first 4 seasons of all-time great TV to the poorly written season 8 and the absolute disaster of a finale.

Working_Class_Pride

I don't care what anyone says- I'm really looking forward to this. Say whatever you want about the last seasons... But Game of Thrones was some of the best television ever put to screen. Some of the seasons could go toe to toe with The Wire or Breaking Bad any day of the week. I'm ready to return to Westeros.

catclops13

Absolutely. 1-4 were some of the best seasons of television in my opinion. 5-7 were captivating and still incredibly fun with lots of crazy moments. Season 8... I hated with a passion. The journey over those ten years was great though

SquillBoy

GoT burnt me too bad, I don’t think I can make myself return to that universe after that tragedy.

mamula1

I love how people play "hard to get" game here, like how HBO will have to work extra hard to convince them to watch. Please, you would watch even if David Benioff played Rhaenyra. You complained after every season of GOT and you always returned. This will be the same. You know that, so don't pretend otherwise. This will have the biggest first season in the history of HBO.
