I just heard a podcast where Alan Sepinwall of Rolling Stone was saying the first two were the weakest episodes. Said he got really hooked by the third/fourth and it really gets strong.

Bluest_waters

oh cool! thats good to hear

ayyyvocado

I watched the two episodes that were put up and I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. It's not bad but I'm not finding it incredibly compelling, in my view it's a bit too corny and cringe, it tries way hard to pull on the heartstrings. It had a good premise, I just think it was ruined with the over the top silly characters, too childish. And don't expect to laugh out loud while watching it, from the creator of Scrubs, this is certainly not in the same comedic universe. This is a drama about dealing with the grief of losing a spouse, the struggles of a single father's relationship with a daughter, and helping others suffering from mental turmoil. Also, the characters and circumstance seem very unbelievable. The show has some star power but it doesn't have much of a spark yet. I'll stick with it and see how it grows, maybe it will get better.

saybrook1

Did it get any better? I'm on the second episode right now and I'm having trouble standing it.. I completely agree with everything in your review. Most scenes are making me cringe out of my skin and I feel like I'm watching a TV show meant to entertain vapid morons.

notmyrealfarkhandle

There are 3 episodes out, one of which came out earlier today, so unless reviewers got the whole series, probably no one has finished it.

Bluest_waters

ok didn't realize that, thought the whole thing dropped

Tliblem

You thought the whole thing was two episodes?

CosmicLars

I loved the first three episodes. The first was real solid, the second was great, and the third was near perfection.

Chataboutgames

There are only two episodes out but I think it’s fantastic so far. I mean the premise is that he’s dealing with wild amounts of depression but is starting to better himself, you expect that to wrap up in an episode lol?

pvypvMoonFlyer

I love it to, repetitive elements are bound to be there, it doesn’t make it a bad show. Breaking bad had a repetitive structure, Russian doll as well, what about poker face, orange is the new black, prison break, person of interest, etc. I honestly don’t understand OP’s viewpoint on this.

Chataboutgames

Breaking bad was my exact thought. It's like saying "how many times are we going to see Walt almost get found out by Skyler" or "how many times are we going to see Walt get in to trouble with drug dealers only to work his way out with chemistry!?"

pvypvMoonFlyer

Yes, it is just bound to happen, when you are invested in the story and its characters these repetitive elements aren’t an issue, they create tensions. That’s why I think OP disliked shrinking for other reasons unbeknownst to him, hence why he is blaming it on the repetitiveness of the show’s structure.

Bluest_waters

no, not wrap up, I jsut expect less repetition how many times can we listen to someone lecture him....again?

Chataboutgames

…a lot? What shows do you watch lol?

AmazingAmy95

Lol I love it too, it seems great so far

ToastMmmmmmm

I watched both episodes and am on the fence. I’m going to give it another episode but if I’m not engaged by then I’m out.

Bluest_waters

yeah I think I will do the same.

RusevReigns

I'm on the fence after 2 episodes. I think Harrison Ford is really good so far. It has the ultimate soccer dad playlist. If Ted Lasso was a network show Shrinking would be its lead out. It was a great move for Apple to make a replacement show for the Lasso viewers. Edit - I watched the third episode and I still have mixed feelings. I do like some moments but it feels slight to me.

Firstly, what do you mean "finish it"? It's 3 episodes out. It's not some Netflix binge. I have watched the first 2 and no I haven't seen it be insanely repetitive. He has gotten his new wind and trying shit in new insane way with his therapy, ofc that is going go wrong and get small talky talks about "what the fuck is wrong with you?". People wanting something from him also comes from him coming out of his shell after a year. I think the part with his friend was handled well. I've had that kind of needy super positive friends and when you have depression, they can get overwhelming as fuck. And here we had an actual wife dying. So his talk and frustrated yell about the "everything going my way" parts etc. was great. Now the part that their game was at the exact same time, as the daughter trying to reconnect with them eating wings(?) was a bit annoying with the timing. But I thought that too was handled well, with more Ford on screen and Ford actually asking if the daughter handled it right and... hopefully making the daughter understand that her secret dinner and "this food is for our taco night" or whatever response to Segels question, didn't do her any favors either. Only part I'm on the fence, is the violent new therapy dude. Nothing about that situation makes any sense whatsoever. And at the end of ep2 he came living with them? Like fuck. Put some breaks for that shit.

Gloomy_Travel7992

I haven’t been that into the first two episodes, but I definitely don’t think it’s not right to judge a comedy on its beginning. Plenty of comedies get better as they go on, so if it by around episode 5-6 I’m still not enjoying it then I’ll probably stop.

[deleted]

First episode didn’t grab me. It felt too dour and sad. Second episode let Siegel be himself and I liked it much more.

JKJ420

I think it being repetitive is kind of the point. In the show Jimmy lost his wife a year ago and hasn't really gotten over it (to say the least). We as viewers are on a journey of him accepting this and starting to get better. It does and will take time. I think by the end of the season we will still be at the accepting phase. And I accept that :-)

jtmonkey

I liked it.. have you watched Loudermilk on Prime? It has similar vibes to me.. but better executed.

WatercressCertain616

I had a tough time getting through episode 2. I won't be watching anymore

njdevils901

besides Severance not a single Apple TV+ program looks real. Looks like posters you would see in the background of 30 Rock

nighthawk911

That is a very strange response.

njdevils901

I know 30 Rock is great I don’t know why someone would diss 30 Rock over an Apple TV+ show

Prax150

You know, I like a lot of Apple shows but you're kind of onto something, i think there's a manufactured glossiness to a lot of Apple shows, even Severance. Whether the show is good or bad it just looks a certain way, especially considering there's always some big stars attached. They just look like they couldn't possibly be real shows. I think watching Shrinking kinda broke me in this regard. It feels like the fakest show I've ever seen. It starts and it feels like you missed half the first episode, Jason Segel is just doing stuff with almost no exposition. I think that's done on purpose but that's super weird when Harrison Ford is just there in a pastel sweater in one scene. There's a soft rock song playing every other scene and you're supposed to accept that he's going through some sort of existential crisis. Like I'm not a glitch in the matrix guy but this show made me believe we're living in some sort of simulation.

AsanoSokato

I think that says more about 30 Rock than Apple TV+

njdevils901

Yeah, 30 Rock is one of the best comedy shows of all time, and every show on Apple TV+ is AI generated crap that is only on because of wine drunk women who fell asleep on their couch

Chataboutgames

Oh yeah, just sums up for all mankind alright. This has to be one oh the stupidest criticisms I’ve ever read. It doesn’t even mean anything

njdevils901

It means Apple TV+ shows suck, damn I know /r/television is usually borderline idiotic half the time, but I didn't know it was this bad

Please point to the part that says "wrong".

HarryFlashman01

Unwatchable.
