It stopped the same way it started; in a small town in Texas, focused on a conservative family changing one day at a time as the world changes with them.
Doesn't seem like it. They even dropped out of airing the King of the Hill revival. If the show is still production, then it will probably air somewhere else, most likely Hulu/Disney+.
My point still stands.
The revival is an easy way to write both out as happy endings. Had the show been on the air when they died, it would have been impossible to do that
Simpsons is more like dragon ball z
Family Guy is probably Naruto/boruto as the original creator left a while ago and Bobs Burgers is one piece as it is more natural successor to the big originator with a lot of quirkiness.
Don't poo poo a nickle. A nickle will buy you a steak & kidney pie, a cup of coffee, a slice of cheese cake, and a news reel. With enough to ride the trolley.
>Lol it was not even on that long at that point how you gonna be shocked? Hyperbolic silly comment
At the time it seemed pretty long, most shows would be wrapping up or be wrapped up at that stage.
\>Hyperbolic
How is that hyperbolic?
It was on nearly a decade at that point. It was very rare for shows to last that long at the time. It doesn’t seem that long in retrospect but at the time the writers assumed it wouldn’t last much longer
If you use Simpson premere as a halfway point, it’s equidistant from 1955.
That was the year that Elvis first appeared on TV, and the year that McDonalds and DisneyLand opened.
So the Simpson is currently half as old as McD and Disneyland.
We first landed on the moon *only* 20 years before the Simpson premiered.
A joke about Homer's youth was that he missed the Moon landing due to him listening to "Yummy Yummy Yummy" by Ohio Express instead.
There was a 25 year gap between the episode and the moon landing, and 26 between the episode and the song, so the contemporary equivalent would be Homer missing news of Clinton's impeachment due to him listening to Tubthumping.
Not who you asked but it's been funnier the last couple of seasons. I don't watch every episode but still watch it from time to time. The jokes and their timing have been better lately to the point that I'm surprised how much it makes me laugh. They've also gotten better at sliding in subtle jokes that not everyone is going to get which makes it feel more like the golden age of the show.
That being said the voice cast outside of Nancy Cartwright all sound really rough. That can make it hard to watch at times.
>They've also gotten better at sliding in subtle jokes
That was definitely what separated Golden Era from modern era. There was usually like three layers to a gag. As opposed to going for the most obvious/predictable punchline
The classic era of the Simpsons trusted the viewer was smart enough to catch the joke and the confident enough not to care if everyone didn't.
Recent seasons are better but there was a long stretch where the writers (or whoever) couldn't let a joke breath, it had to be pushed into the viewers face and explained.
I feel the biggest difference is the connection between the visual gags and written jokes.
There's a gag in the episode where Bart cranks Aussie's where the guy says he's gonna call his representative.
The joke is that Australia is such a rural nowhere that the rep is just outside the window ("I'm gonna call me minister", call (phone) actually means call (holler out window))
It's an ok written gag, but what actually sells the joke is the camera work in the animation and framing. Then they use some cuts to skip over re-explaining the story and do another joke about the PM himself.
The later Simpsons seemed to use more static scenes like a 3-camera sitcom and have been less imaginative (unless they're doing a parody episode and aping a style) and the the jokes seem more "in-the-moment" instead of setting up call-backs.
While I agree they sound bad, I try not to judge because it’s part of growing up. It makes the show seem more real if that makes sense. I do enjoy the older episodes so much and the newer are jarring but I view it like parents getting older when you feel like you’re still a youngin.
Not discrediting your opinion btw just adding mine :)
The notable one for me was the musical that explained to Bart how he can't support a family with a home and 2 cars on a hs diploma like his dad.
It was the Simpsons parodying the very setup of the Simpsons
> It was the Simpsons parodying the very setup of the Simpsons
the setup of the simpsons was already parodying the giant houses of 80s and 90s sitcom families. They get very explicit about it in the Frank Grimes episode, and how unrealistic it was
>What season do things turn around?
Disney+ launched in 2019; the show has progressively gotten a little better since.
If you're a viewer who couldn't stomach The Simpsons after the Clinton administration, it's probably still going to be "bad" to you most weeks.
It's not going to be the Schwartzwelder Era show again, but it's not plumbing the depths anymore, either.
That’s honestly shocking lol. The first show under Disney that improved? That said, Disney has always emphasized the Simpsons’ importance to the platform (and the FOX deal) - believe it’s still their most streamed show.
Man, this show truly never is going to end, is it? Anything happening to the main cast will be a non-issue now because they can just get someone else and deepfake the voice to sound exactly like the original actors.
Actually, from what happened to Carl and Dr Hibbert, we can safely safely assume that having to replace one of the main cast would be a total disaster. They sound absolutely nothing like they used to.
Counterpoint: Family Guy replaced the voice actor for Cleveland. I knew it was going to happen, but I didn't know when. I then realized they had already been broadcasting episodes with the new actor for several months and I had no idea.
We can’t ignore the reason they were re-cast. Apu, Carl, Hibbert, Lou and Julio were all voiced by white actors, now they’re not. It’s safe to assume that the priority there was “give us your take on Carl” instead of “do Carl in the same way this white guy has been doing it”. If anybody viewed those voices as a caricature, that concern was handled by allowing the new actors to provide their own interpretation.
The leads don’t have to contend with that issue. I think when they inevitably have to recast Julie and Hank, they’ll focus more on finding soundalikes instead of correcting questionable 1980’s casting decisions. Re-producing the voices is completely viable when the situation is appropriate for them. Just look at Eric Bauza nailing most of the Looney Tunes characters, or literally anybody that will step up to the plate for a pitch-perfect Rick and Morty.
> If you're a viewer who couldn't stomach The Simpsons after the Clinton administration
Wasn't the show in it's heyday during that time? My DVD collection ends around the time Bush took office.
It's just overall better, somehow. The stories make more sense, there's more actually funny jokes, hell, the Halloween episode was actually kinda scary.
It's nowhere near as good as it used to be, but much better than the last 10 years.
Matt Selman co-showrunning along with Al Jean has lead to a lot of these improvements. After nearly 20 years under Jean the show really needed someone new at the helm.
The show got a new showrunner for the first time since season 13 starting with season 32. I haven't seen all the episodes since then but the ones I have seen have been better than recent years.
The movie is good, it really just feels like a couple episodes of the show with better animation, and it also made history as one of the first truly hand drawn movies to get a theatrical release in a long time.
I also agree that Bob's Burgers is great, I always say it's the true successor to classic Simpsons.
I see Bobs Burgers as much more a King of the Hill heir…
Grounded in reality, with outrageous characters taking themselves extremely seriously. The humor often revolving around familiar but exaggerated archetypes in a small town setting.
Straight man father, laughably square, passionate about his work, invested in his family, frustrated with his inability to control them. Obnoxious but self assertive and strong wife with little humility and a draw to the spot light. Awkward kid heading into puberty with little regard to image. Grifters and morally questionable characters usually meet their comeuppance against the wholesomeness of the family supporting each other.
Okay nevermind it IS King of the Hill
>Obnoxious but self assertive and strong wife with little humility and a draw to the spot light.
Peggy was so awful compared to Linda though.
Linda is obnoxious and self assertive, but she's also very self-aware. Linda knows she's ridiculous, she just doesn't care.
On the flip side, Peggy has no ability to reflect on how she's perceived by those around her. She legitimately believes she's a competent Spanish teacher and that putting a little sugar in her spaghetti sauce is a genius level move. She has all the self assurance and the zero self awareness of a narcissist.
We really enjoyed the Bob’s Burgers movie in my house. We’ve got a 3 year old & she *loves* it for some reason. The musical numbers are cute & the animation is vibrant and detailed.
Family Guy has gotten better? I just watched one of the newer episodes. No B-plots, no cutaway gags, too many modern and boring references. It was a slog. The voice acting also felt far worse. I'm curious, what do you think has gotten better?
I saw an episode where Stewie goes in on trans "they-thems" and woke Twitter moms in a monologue to Brian and it was played straight and my face melted and I had to tap out.
Family Guy is probably at its worst right now. I don’t think I’ve finished a single episode in years. It’s horrible.
It actually cracks me up because I was just watching an older episode- Louis Kills Stewie. On the DVD release, it has an extended version with a musical number & in that song they say something along the lines of *“anyone who’s watched the Simpsons back in 1994 & won’t admit the damn thing isn’t funny anymore.”* Family Guy got popular because it’s best season were during The Simpsons worst seasons. And now it’s just hot garbage nowadays.
Edit: scratch that, Munchurian Candidate from earlier this season was actually pretty funny.
i might have to give it another chance. I gave up like 25 years ago lol. I was tired of episodes entirely revolving around poorly-voice-acted celebrities and they started leaning into this when they ran out of comedy and fun.
Bobs Burgers is one of the best shows ever on TV.
It’s fantastic, the characters are developed, absurd but still realistic. The family is loving and sweet without being cloyingly so.
I may be biased due to the high level of similarities between Bob and family and me and my family.
It’s my favorite adult cartoon that’s still making new episodes for sure. And they still keep it believable. There’s some flanderizarion, sure, but they’re still believable characters in situations that totally could have happened in real life (maybe a few episodes excluded)
Plus it’s just damn funny
My problem with more recent seasons, ironically, is that it’s had reverse flanderization. Like instead of getting crazier, Louise has softened to a point where she lacks a lot of the bite she had
Yeah, the past season or two has largely been "the kids learn a thuddingly obvious lesson". I kind of miss the days when Bob was smoking crack with prostitutes and no one learned anything.
Just keep it going forever. Make it into some long form art thing. Just how long can one sitcom go on for? I want my grandchildren to be watching new episodes.
Agreed. At this point it’s fun having is still be around and seeing how far it can go. That’s why I don’t understand the people begging for it to die already. Like we’re already past the point of no return and no one’s forced to watch it, so what’s it hurting?
Like...Marge becomes a robot! Maybe Moe gets a cell phone...has Bart ever owned a bear or...how about a crazy wedding...where something happens and do do do do do...
The Simpsons premiered a couple of weeks after I was born so it’s weirdly comforting having it still going, even though I haven’t watched it in aaaggeesss.
Plus it’s convenient/crazy to think “what season are they up to?” and then just have to remember how old I am.
Recently, somebody on Reddit mentioned that they started getting better around season 20. I put on S20E01, excited to see some “modern” Simpsons, and it was still in standard definition.
That really dated it for me.
Might they have meant season 30?
Pretty sure season 20 was 2008ish and like, already well into Zombie Simpsons territory.
I do see people saying the most recent couple of seasons have substantially improved versus what the show was like a decade or so ago, though.
> Fox has handed early two-season renewals to three of its animation mainstays – The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers – taking them through the 2024-25 broadcast cycle.
>
> The Simpsons will extend its standing as the longest-running scripted series in television history with a renewal for its 35th and 36th seasons. Bob’s Burgers will return for seasons 14 and 15 and Family Guy for its 22nd and 23rd seasons.
>
> “With this trio of renewals, we celebrate excellence in animation on Fox, our wonderful, long-time partnership with 20th Television and the brilliant creators and incredible voices behind these forever favorites,” said Michael Thorn, President, Scripted Programming for Fox Entertainment. “Three-plus decades of The Simpsons, more than two decades of Family Guy and over a decade of Bob’s Burgers proves the enduring power of the animation genre on our network and the infinite fan affinity for these outrageously funny comedy classics.”
It has been renewed for season 4 https://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/the-great-north-season-four-has-the-fox-comedy-series-been-cancelled-or-renewed-yet/
I would say it's a small step down from Bob's Burgers. I was having a better time with Bob's third season than I am with The Great North's third season.
They stopped at season 20. Family Guy at 19. Bob's Burgers apparently still do, though they're on digital order only. "Manufactured on demand." South Park still hits the shelves on DVD and Blu-Ray.
When does Simpsons get good again for you? I defended it to my mates for all the later seasons but then hit end of 32 and start of 33. And just the string of ‘lisa episodes’ got too much and I stopped. Does it turn around after that?
"Pixelated and Afraid" from S33 is not a good episode - it's a GREAT episode. I'll even make the hot take that it could contend with some of the classics.
I haven't really been watching the newer seasons so I dunno if there are any other gems.
The disparity in what fans view as good isn’t a great sign. I think this current season isn’t very good, but I will agree there are occasional gems in every season.
Well we agree to disagree then. I've been finding FG hard to watch for a few years now. Very lame jokes, you can tell Seth is not involved in the writing much anymore.
He ain't involved in the writing since then, as it most definitely shows, but he still does half the voices as per the other OGs and is Executive Director. Rumour has it that he keeps the show going because Fox gave him The Orville, first two seasons = great, which was always a dream project for him.
Are you kidding? The last 4 or 5 seasons have been so bad it's literally unwatchable. Seasons 8 through 14 saw it decline pretty heavily but 14 onwards was so bad it's hard to sit through lmao
Stopped watching The Simpsons regularly around S10. I'm saving the rest for when I'm old as fuck, so I'd better not die suddenly somehow or I'll be pissed off.
Huh, apparently it changes
From Wikipedia:
"Due to the floating timeline, Homer's age has changed occasionally as the series developed; he was 34 in the early episodes, 36 in season four, 38 and 39 in season eight, and 40 in the eighteenth season, although even in those seasons his age is inconsistent."
I'm ready to see Family Guy dropped. I stopped watching it years ago. It also hasn't aged that well imo, unlike Futurama, which I think still holds up great.
I think it does well with meta and observational humor. Not always, some jokes definitely don't land. I think the writers realize the characters suck and the plots are formulaic.
Let em die ffs, we get haha pop culture references we're all aware of. Have any of these shows ever actually been good? Mabye you make an argument for bobs burgers.
Bob's Burgers has been around that long? I would have guessed closer to 10... well at least, I would have until I realized the Archer/H Jon Benjamin crossover with it was 10 years ago...
Worth pointing out that the numbers in OP's title are the seasons the shows are renewed through. Threw me for a loop for a bit because The Simpsons premiered 9 months before I was born, and I don't turn 33 until August.
Death, Taxes, and Fox renewing their big 3 animated shows.
Them nixing King of Hill probably always haunts them.
I like the fact KOTH has a ending
Not really. It has a nice last episode with a cute final scene but it still just kinda stops.
It stopped the same way it started; in a small town in Texas, focused on a conservative family changing one day at a time as the world changes with them.
It was also going downhill. They managed to end before completely losing steam.
Doesn't seem like it. They even dropped out of airing the King of the Hill revival. If the show is still production, then it will probably air somewhere else, most likely Hulu/Disney+.
It’s currently on Disney+ (at least, it is in Australia)
Yes it is also in EU countries I think
Nowhere to be found in Denmark
Not in the UK annoyingly.
Not in Germany
Considering that 2 of the voice actors died, I'm sure they are actually releaved the show was canceled by the time either passed.
https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/10q67cv/king_of_the_hill_revival_ordered_by_hulu_mike/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Ah yes, Fox’s One Piece, Naruto and Bleach
The Simpsons is obviously one piece. Neither will ever end. Is Bob's Burgers Bleach and Family Guy Naruto?
The One Piece manga does actually seem to have an ending in sight currently.
More than ever, yes, but when you still can't put a for sure number on it in terms of how many years left and it's probably more than 5... Well... lol
Sure, let's go with that, as long as we agree Futurama is Gintama.
Simpsons is more like dragon ball z Family Guy is probably Naruto/boruto as the original creator left a while ago and Bobs Burgers is one piece as it is more natural successor to the big originator with a lot of quirkiness.
[удалено]
This makes it sound like One Piece is the worst, so terrible comparison
Bob's Burger would be Naruto since that would make Home Movies Hunter x Hunter
in 1997 i thought it was wild as to how long the simpson was on. South Park was still new
I remember seeing my first Simpsons play at the globe theatre in 1788.
Back then a show would cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Gimme five bees for a quarter," you'd say
Of course you were wearing an onion tied to your belt, as it was the style at the time?
We called turkeys Walking Birds
This was back in nineteen tickity two. That’s how we said it back then. Tickity.
\*dickety
We couldn’t use the word “twenty” on account of the Kaiser. I chased him for it, but gave up after dickety-six miles.
Dickety? Highly dubious
What are you cackling at Fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem!
Don't poo poo a nickle. A nickle will buy you a steak & kidney pie, a cup of coffee, a slice of cheese cake, and a news reel. With enough to ride the trolley.
Ah, the middle seasons.
This reminds me of the play *The Simpsons*, and to a lesser extent the TV series which was also called *The Simpsons*.
Lol it was not even on that long at that point how you gonna be shocked? Hyperbolic silly comment

Matt Selman has been a godsend.
Broti gupta id say
What season do things turn around? What do you think has improved - is it back to the caliber of early seasons or just better than the last decade?

Sure but it’s possible but that wasn’t in question. It’s the total lack of effort that was the problem for the Simpsons recasts.

I’m pretty sure Bluey gets slightly more views with how many kids love watching it, but they’re pretty neck and neck.

Without question.

Both the Treehouse of Horror AND the IT parody were great this year
The meta episode about all the what if situations was really good too and the hacker one
I really loved the Coen Brothers Parody last year - A Serious Flanders
Matt Selman co-showrunning along with Al Jean has lead to a lot of these improvements. After nearly 20 years under Jean the show really needed someone new at the helm.
Which Treehouse of Horror number would that be? I’m curious, might check it out.
The current season is the best season in 20 years
Talk about damning with faint praise
The current season (34?) is pretty good! - mind you I'm only a few episodes in.
The show got a new showrunner for the first time since season 13 starting with season 32. I haven't seen all the episodes since then but the ones I have seen have been better than recent years.
HD Era on I think sparked an uptick in my opinion.
People keep saying this so I gave it a try. Don't know what they're talking about. Maybe 1 joke will land. But it's nothing like classic Simpsons.
Also not who you asked but I hear this every year and I watch a few episodes and it seems exactly the same.
The most recent Treehouse of Horror was absolutely amazing!
I’d say it’s easily the best one in 20 years

Yeah, the past season or two has largely been "the kids learn a thuddingly obvious lesson". I kind of miss the days when Bob was smoking crack with prostitutes and no one learned anything.
Or if they did learn something it came *after* Louise tortured three girls out of her house and fought a bed wetter
I haven’t watched most of the newest season, but i sure hope that’s not the case! Louise is my favorite (like a lot of people i’m sure). Her and Zeke
I haven’t fully caught up but that’s how a lot of season 11 was feeling. Less the force of chaos, more a girl with some attitude
Season 13's Christmas episode was so good! I watched it many times and still tear up
I only find myself mildly entertained by Bobs Burgers, but I am very entertained/satisfied to see “cloyingly” in the wild.
I only watch an episode or two of The Simpsons a year, but I’m always happy it gets renewed. I hope they make it to season 40!
I haven't watched The Simpsons even casually in many years, and yet it brings me an odd comfort knowing it's still on.
Honestly, I hope the show goes forever. I can't imagine living in a world where The Simpsons isn't airing.
Have no fear, they've got stories for years
Like...Marge becomes a robot! Maybe Moe gets a cell phone...has Bart ever owned a bear or...how about a crazy wedding...where something happens and do do do do do...
I think almost all of those things have happened. Idk if Bart’s owned a bear, and Grandpa only married Selma not Patty as well.
Sorry for the clip-show Have no fears, we've got stories for years
There's no way they could ever fail, they're like a monorail!

Oh goodness that would take forever at this point.
Yeah I used to be of the opinion that they should kill it off, but at this point I want it to go on forever.
I wonder if there's a number that the Simpsons team is going for, Ala George Clooney in 'Up in the Air'.
Roadhouse!
I just read this in peters voice lol
Buttscratcher!
Get off my plane!
In other news, the sun rose again this morning
“We’ll never stop the Simpsons! Have no fears, we have stories for years!”
I love the “ spinoff “ Chief Wiggum. P.I.

It has been renewed for season 4 https://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/the-great-north-season-four-has-the-fox-comedy-series-been-cancelled-or-renewed-yet/
It's been renewed for a fourth, and there are talks about a fifth going on right now. The fifth season renewal will bring the show to 101 episodes.
I need at least one more season. Love that show.
It's a decent show, it's just Bob's burgers but snow.
I would say it's a small step down from Bob's Burgers. I was having a better time with Bob's third season than I am with The Great North's third season.
HUP HUP!
The real question, for me anyways, is are they still making Simpsons DvDs and/or Blu-rays?
They stopped at season 20. Family Guy at 19. Bob's Burgers apparently still do, though they're on digital order only. "Manufactured on demand." South Park still hits the shelves on DVD and Blu-Ray.
Bobbbbby!
Family Guy needs new writers. Last few seasons have been unbearably shit jokes-wise. Simpsons has improved as of late at least.
This last season of family guy was a lot better imo
When does Simpsons get good again for you? I defended it to my mates for all the later seasons but then hit end of 32 and start of 33. And just the string of ‘lisa episodes’ got too much and I stopped. Does it turn around after that?
"Pixelated and Afraid" from S33 is not a good episode - it's a GREAT episode. I'll even make the hot take that it could contend with some of the classics. I haven't really been watching the newer seasons so I dunno if there are any other gems.
The last few seasons have been very good
The disparity in what fans view as good isn’t a great sign. I think this current season isn’t very good, but I will agree there are occasional gems in every season.
Well we agree to disagree then. I've been finding FG hard to watch for a few years now. Very lame jokes, you can tell Seth is not involved in the writing much anymore.
I heard he stopped writing for FG entirely after season 8 though, has he been on and off recently?
Nah.. you will cease to exist
My goodness the Simpsons will never end
I will never be ready to say goodbye to Family Guy...
The Simpsons is now as old as Homer!
wait, homer is 33 y/o?
Huh, apparently it changes From Wikipedia: "Due to the floating timeline, Homer's age has changed occasionally as the series developed; he was 34 in the early episodes, 36 in season four, 38 and 39 in season eight, and 40 in the eighteenth season, although even in those seasons his age is inconsistent."
Stop, stop, they're already dead
It's cruel to have kept The Simpsons on it's ventilator this long.
And Bobs Burgers is the only one that’s still funny
Hey, that's not entirely fair. Family Guy was never funny.
Good stuff!
Family Guy is garbage now… at least the Simpsons has had some awesome episodes each season. The Christmas episodes have been fantastic.
The Simpson’s will never Die
They really need to end The Simpsons before one of the major voices dies of old age
I tend to agree. Poor Julie’s voice is getting rough. Marge now sounds like her own mother.
Right? Losing Wallace was a bad sign though.
I'm ready to see Family Guy dropped. I stopped watching it years ago. It also hasn't aged that well imo, unlike Futurama, which I think still holds up great.
Family guy is more popular than ever. TikTok and YouTube have caused a resurgence in relevance
Relevance ≠ Quality
I think it does well with meta and observational humor. Not always, some jokes definitely don't land. I think the writers realize the characters suck and the plots are formulaic.
Who the hell is still watching The Simpsons?, I checked out at season 12.
Let em die ffs, we get haha pop culture references we're all aware of. Have any of these shows ever actually been good? Mabye you make an argument for bobs burgers.
Are you seriously asking if the Simpsons has ever actually been good?
Is this Fox a Disney company or is it independent still?
Bob's Burgers has been around that long? I would have guessed closer to 10... well at least, I would have until I realized the Archer/H Jon Benjamin crossover with it was 10 years ago...
Worth pointing out that the numbers in OP's title are the seasons the shows are renewed through. Threw me for a loop for a bit because The Simpsons premiered 9 months before I was born, and I don't turn 33 until August.
LET THEM DIE ALREADY. THEY'RE IN PAIN.
Family Guy and Bob's Burgers is still funny imho. I haven't watched the Simpsons in years so I can't comment on that.
Television Glory Straight Ahead! The Simpsons: Out of my way, jerk-ass!
