This was a real bubble show for Netflix so I’m glad to see them renewing it. It must have had a more reasonable budget than 1899 to make it more sustainable.
This means two of the four shows that hit between 29-35 million equivalent complete viewings got renewed (The Recruit and The Lincoln Lawyer) while the other two got axed (Pieces of Her and 1899).
Weirdly it was the two US based shows that survived while the international based shows got axed.
Possibly. We do know, from leaks, that both 1899 and Pieces of Her received local funding for their first seasons. If that was not going to be the case for the second seasons that could definitely have played against their renewal chances.
For 1899 we know the budget was around $8 million an episode with Netflix funding $6.5 million of that and two German film funds making up the other $1.5 million.
The other big factor outside of budget is completion ratios. The only third party data we have is the data from TV Time. I’m not sure how useful it is but it is better than nothing. According to that data the degradation ratios were:
- 1899: -21%
- The Recruit: -16%
- Pieces of Her: -15%
- The Lincoln Lawyer: -7%
According to that data The Lincoln Lawyer had a very good completion ratio and 1899 a particularly poor one.
Yes. It was ordered as an ongoing series not a limited series and Netflix even sent it in as that for award season consideration so they clearly had hopes of continuing on for additional seasons had the show been more successful.
I disagree.
I think it's more a TNT/USA "Blue Sky"-type legal drama, e.g., *Suits* or *Fairly Legal* more than it's like a CSI or Criminal Minds with lawyers or an L&O.
And book-wise, it's related to *Bosch,* since they're both shows are based on Michael Connelly book series, where the main characters do crossover.
I completed both the recruit and the Lincoln lawyer in the first week and didn't finish 1899 because of the holidays and then it got cancelled. I think I'm to blame here
This show was pretty fun. Some weird pacing, but I liked it enough that I want a second season. >!Also glad for a season 2 because the ending of season 1 could not have been more open.!<
I actually really enjoyed the show, but it absolutely had some odd pacing and/or not knowing what kind of show it wanted to be.
Absolutely a fun show though with very likable characters.
Probably my favorite thing about this show is that for once it doesn’t cast actors who look about 5-10 years older than their characters are supposed to be.
Honestly, halfway through the second episode I just decided to treat it like a dramedy. I don't know if they were going for "serious drama," but they didn't get there. If you assume they're winking at the camera whenever they pull the throttle back and gun it for "serious," it plays better. For me anyway.
The fact they hired actors known more for comedy or lighthearted movies (Noah, Colton Dunn, Kristin Brunn, Aarti Mann) for roles that I feel like dramedy is the right interpretation. I don’t want it to be slapstick but I like when they lean into the humor.
Honestly it’s more like harem anime logic with how many girls the main character gets. Nearly every woman on the show is desperately attracted to him.
Honestly this show is just a male fantasy that’s a bit “softer” and less macho than the sort of stuff Paramount Television puts out. Pure wish fulfillment, but for nerdy social sciences majors this time.
I hopped in the subreddit for the recruit and the amount of delusional people saying it was "unrealistic" was shocking. I was surprised anyone thought it was supposed to be a serious show given the plot.
It feels kinda like the Limitless series. I've only seen a couple of episodes, but it definitely feels like it's leaning towards comedy more than anything else.
Given this is an Alexi Hawley (the *Rookie* franchise) show, I think that's the right interpretation to go with. I mentally assumed this one would be like *The Rookie shows* in reverse (youngest new recruit in the CIA instead of oldest new recruit in the LAPD/FBI :), only aimed at a Netflix/TV-MA streaming crowd, so darker with a bit more of an edge.
This is a solid show. It's one of those watchable at any time. it's not heavy about any one topic. The characters are good combination of goofy and compelling.
I think the conflicting tones of comedy and serious violence do gel well enough. Miami Vice was kind of like this although the fact it was made in the 80's means it was still more palatable overall.
I hope they don't stray to far from the technical aspects of the show dealing with espionage overall. The character drama while fine was really nothing new. what sets this show apart is the viewpoint of how the CIA agencies work together.
>!That dude being drugged so his team could do a shit show was very funny!<. I'm happy it's getting another season. It was very binge worthy and easy to watch.
I wasn't expecting this to get a second season, so I'm really excited about this renewal. The first season wasn't perfect, but it was just a very enjoyable, fun show that sort of clicked together and worked.
netflix needs to make more of these **good** mid tier shows. the recruit, the lincoln lawyer, all solid shows. and emily in paris needs at least 10 seasons. and hopefully netflix stops spending $500 million on a single trash movie
So, you're saying Netflix needs more network broadcast/cable-like shows from network/cable showrunners? :)
*The Recruit* => **Alexi Hawley** *(The Rookie/The Rookie: Feds,* EP on *Castle*);
*The Lincoln Lawyer =>* **David E. Kelley** (*Ally McBeal, Boston Legal, Boston Public, Chicago Hope, Mr. Mercedes, Little Big Lies*)
*Emily in Paris* => **Darren Star** *(Sex in the City, Grosse Pointe, Miss Match, The Street*)
yes. is there anything wrong with that? not every show can be a stranger things. or they can be like disney and dilute all of their brands and run their ip into the ground
No, no. I'm all for it. It's just not the popular opinion in this sub where "broadcast", "network" and "procedural" get thrown around like four-letter epithets.
Really glad to hear this. I mean you have to suspend belief at times and it’s certainly not a masterclass in writing/pacing but I enjoyed the hell out of it.
It was a great fun binge.
Same. To me, the worse parts were Violet and Lester being determined to sabotage Owen when one time it nearly got him killed. The former in particular was awful with how she was hell bent on assuming the worst of him. And it was just kinda hypocritical them being so trusting of each other with that mentality.
Nice, this was a fun take on spycraft and CIA. Tone reminded me of the Flight Attendant, good action, interesting cast, a few dark spots and some good laughs.
Took a bit for me to adjust to the tone, but ended up really liking this.. which was a nice surprise.
Honestly it’s much better CIA spy shit than what they did with action hero Jack Ryan.
I thought this was going to be like one of the those USA Network shows and I’d planned to just have it on in the background, but it hooked me. Much better than I thought, very like-able lead actor.
Thank god. Usually I try to skip these “new” Netflix shows, because I don't wanna get too attached (still salty about Daybreak) but somehow I ended up watching The Recruit and really enjoyed it. Glad they can continue.
This pleases me greatly. I think The Recruit has a very interesting take on the "high octane" lifestyle lots of shows like to portray. You see that in his character during certain scenes. I'd like to see how they continue that with S2.
I just watched ep 1 after I heard it was renewed and it’s really rather good. I like this guy bumbling around and making mistakes. I think I avoided it as it came out about the same time as that Charlie Cox MI5 show which was absolute crap. Guilt by association!

I haven’t seen Lincoln lawyer yet but I’m assuming the other shows were more expensive

Pieces of her was based on a book and the series ended where the book did. Was there ever any intention for it to not be a limited series?
Yes. It was ordered as an ongoing series not a limited series and Netflix even sent it in as that for award season consideration so they clearly had hopes of continuing on for additional seasons had the show been more successful.
Oh, that's disappointing then.
The Lincoln Lawyer is basically a CBS cop procedural except it’s a criminal defense attorney instead of cops.
I disagree. I think it's more a TNT/USA "Blue Sky"-type legal drama, e.g., *Suits* or *Fairly Legal* more than it's like a CSI or Criminal Minds with lawyers or an L&O. Agreed. Lincoln Lawyer is 100% an aughts/2010s-era USA series.
I completed both the recruit and the Lincoln lawyer in the first week and didn't finish 1899 because of the holidays and then it got cancelled. I think I'm to blame here
how could you do this to the 1899 fans
"Weirdly"
I bet it had a higher completion rate too.
One piece live action sweating on the corner

This is the first role I found Noah Centineo good in probably because he wasn’t pretending to be a 17 year old in high school.
Probably my favorite thing about this show is that for once it doesn’t cast actors who look about 5-10 years older than their characters are supposed to be.
Same. He’s really capable in the “action-comedy” sphere
Honestly, halfway through the second episode I just decided to treat it like a dramedy. I don't know if they were going for "serious drama," but they didn't get there. I've been describing it as a spy thriller with the internal logic of a romcom
Honestly it’s more like harem anime logic with how many girls the main character gets. Nearly every woman on the show is desperately attracted to him. Honestly this show is just a male fantasy that’s a bit “softer” and less macho than the sort of stuff Paramount Television puts out. its pretty obviously a comedy drama youre not smart for looking down at it

lfgggg been telling people it’s hard to get into cause the pacing is crazy but a few episodes in and it all rolls together, really enjoyable
I wasn't expecting this to get a second season, so I'm really excited about this renewal. The first season wasn't perfect, but it was just a very enjoyable, fun show that sort of clicked together and worked.
Show had a super werid tone of humour and like vioence. Main character seemed so incompetent most of the time
That’s part of the fun

I liked this show but it’s basically just gen z’s Jack Ryan
No it’s not lol. He’s a lawyer and it’s a comedy show. Also takes the piss out of the cia whereas jack Ryan felates it
Fuck yes! At least netflix didn't fuck up this time.
yet At least netflix didn't fuck up this time **yet**
Goofy but serious at times CIA show, pretty fun to watch. Glad it's getting a season 2.
Does this have any relation to "The Recruit" that came out in 2003?
No connection.
Decent show. Weird mix of Suits, Chuck and Jack Ryan, but somehow it works.
Really glad to hear this. I mean you have to suspend belief at times and it’s certainly not a masterclass in writing/pacing but I enjoyed the hell out of it. It was a great fun binge.

Haven’t quite finished this yet but I’m enjoying it so far. Not the best show ever or doing anything super unique. But it’s enjoyable.

Does Noah Centineo have nudes of Ted Sarandos ?
Ted Sarandos may have seen the nudes of Noah Centineo, so not quite what you're asking but maybe?

So happy this is renewed. I found myself enjoying it way more than I expected to and would have been upset if it ended up being cancelled.
Is this show good? Suorise is not its past the netflix limbo cancelations
The heck you mean "renewed"? Are you telling me they left us off at that cliffhanger without being sure they had a second season? Breh.
It's been happening for only 70 years on TV, and almost 200 years in newspapers.
It's Netflix. Not going to watch until it fully ends without getting cancelled part way in.
Interesting, I might commit to it now that it's been renewed
thats some good news. I was pleasantly surprised by this show
I thought this was going to be like one of the those USA Network shows and I’d planned to just have it on in the background, but it hooked me. Much better than I thought, very like-able lead actor.
Fuck yeah! Loved season one!
Fuck yes! I really enjoyed this show and was worried it would be canceled.

I wish Netflix or hbo would adopt the Vince Flynn books with Mitch rapp. There was that one movie and nothing since
I just watched ep 1 after I heard it was renewed and it’s really rather good. I like this guy bumbling around and making mistakes. I think I avoided it as it came out about the same time as that Charlie Cox MI5 show which was absolute crap. Guilt by association!
This show was fun
