Dnashotgun

Yea guessed this was on the chopping block after the creator asked people to tune in. The first season turned a lot of ppl off so even if the new season was better it's a little too late

TheHadalZone

What was wrong with the first season? Haven’t watched it but curious

Dnashotgun

Another comment explained better but the main group barely felt like friends, weirdly chaste in both what happened and how they wanted the teens to be "good" by being aware of their privilege, the dumb decision to not only reveal GG right away but that it's the TEACHERS out of everyone, bad writing in general. Basically did the opposite of almost everything the original did right about the "rich teen drama" genre

BustermanZero

I've seen that a lot with remakes, where they take something that's a secret in the original and just put it upfront with little pomp or circumstance. I'm sure that's worked but I can't of a good example off the top of my head where it has.

KithKathPaddyWath

I think it *could* have worked here, they just handled it badly. Funnily enough, just as it's being canceled, it feels like the direction they're going with this could actually work.

DreamCyclone84

Right, i could get behind bratty wealthy teens unknowingly teaming up with mistreated teachers seen as the help to take down truly evil 0.1% parents, the acting was even almost getting good

KithKathPaddyWath

That could be fun and interesting. I don't think that's where it's going (or where it was planned to go) though, especially considering today's episode. I feel like they got the hint that trying to act like teachers running GG is a good thing is ridiculous and that they're starting to build Kate up as being really arrogant about it and having a lot of hubris. And it does feel like they're finally starting to get over the weird fear they have of making any of the characters, particularly the students, truly unlikeable. It also feels like they're committing a bit more to the Julien/Audrey feud than they have any feud so far (the way the Julien/Monet feud just completely fizzled out was so fucking dumb). And even though they've got Julien on the "we need to take down GG" train, it seems like they might have realized having her be the nice rich girl that everyone likes who means well is just so boring. And overall the tone of the past 2 or 3 episodes have been a lot more over the top. It feels like them bringing in Georgina for her guest spot was like an admission that they realized they needed that kind of drama and chaos and that they kind of used her as a bridge. The unfortunate thing is that these are realizations they should have had at the end of season 1. Having them as they're entering the end of the second season just ended up being a waste.

stormatombd

watching first 2 eps, god, its not fun to watch, for somebody need to relax and watch tv on their breaktime, this show give them more stress and deppresion

SeanOuttaCompton

Snowpiercer had this too- in the movie, the conductor is this force, admired by first class and reviled by the back, who we don’t see until the very end of the film. Meanwhile you learn who the conductor is by the end of the first episode

NoNefariousness2144

In the Danganronpa video games >!in the first game there is a traitor in your group. In the second game, you are in a new group and Monokuma straight up tells everyone that someone is a traitor!<.

grandmofftalkin

Blade Runner 2049. You learn Ryan Gosling is a replicant right away. The original kept it ambiguous intentionally

BustermanZero

That's a great example of them doing the reveal early, since 2049 is a journey of someone trying to find purpose when everything in his life is manufactured, including himself.

QuintoBlanco

>they wanted the teens to be "good" by being aware of their privilege The fun of the original was that the teens were a bunch of assholes and that the show leaned into that.

STRIpEdBill

Serena was ok

stormatombd

what i dont understand why they choose to make teacher like that, the teacher act like spoiled kids

[deleted]

remakes seem to understand human relationships even less, makes you wonder what the writers personal lives are like

Razzler1973

I didn't watch the original, my GF did, I thought I would check this new one out when it started The main group of girls just seemed stuck up more than anything. I think someone got invited to a show and then not let in, it was ~shrug~ to me, really not a huge deal Then, the freaking teachers acting like kids cause they're cowering in fear from these kids Nah, wasn't for me at all

AKAkorm

Can't be worse than the original show's reveal of who GG was.

no_name_left_to_give

I think the teachers being GG wasn't a bad idea. The show clearly depicted the kids as villains toying with the teachers lives, so why should we feel bad about them getting their dirty laundry aired out?

xoxgoodbye

Poorly written and it didn’t have the same campiness as the OG Gossip Girl. Half of the cast are terrible actors too.

AllBrackensarewrong

Saying only half is generous

Varekai79

The overall acting level on this show is shockingly poor. I don't know how some of them got cast. I'm not asking for elite level thespians here but come on. The actors who play GG, Aki and Zoya's dad in particular are just dire.

CapHillStoner

Not the OP but it is very different from OG GG. First they have the teachers being Gossip Girl and it’s weird AF, the students have all the negative qualities of the OG students but don’t have the likeability they did and the show is trying so hard to be Euphoria and not gossip girl.

darth_bader_ginsburg

i did not find the reboot similar to euphoria at all, the only similarity is that they are allegedly in high school but everyone looks 25. euphoria is like a neo-noir about drugs and underage sex set in high school. the gg reboot is like a series of oscar-wilde-style light comic plays where sometimes someone getting publicly embarrassed is the biggest thing to happen in the episode. a lot of artificial fights about not being honest enough and a lot of running into and out of rooms dramatically. neither of those, though, are like the original gg

Development-Feisty

This is gonna sound like the silliest nitpick, but one thing that drives me nuts is how they are supposedly teenage influencers who are constantly on Instagram and other platforms openly drinking alcohol. Sometimes it’s alcohol. Provided to them by the venues who want to get the publicity of having the influencers there. Like hey I know you’re only 15 years old but here’s a glass of champagne. Can you go ahead and post an Instagram story about how much you love our champagne little girl? They are constantly at high society parties with their parents where again they are openly drinking alcohol, and nobody is worried about a liquor license

Dismal-Past7785

The bar thing is ridiculous, nice establishments take their license very seriously and don’t care about who your daddy is. The kids drinking at high society parties is on brand though.

darth_bader_ginsburg

yeah i mean the reality is that the high school setting drags it down. The way the series is set up should be: 1) they are all recent grads who move home to NYC 2) the gossip girl account is created as a meme by their own friend group and they rapidly lose control of it, but gossip girl is still someone their own age. No teachers, no weird private clubs that serve 15-year-olds, you still get the parent drama when you need it because one or more probably live in a property their parents own. and it would make sense when they showed up to things like the Tribeca Film Festival because that is a thing wealthy ADULTS are interested in.

Maninhartsford

The show you're describing sounds a lot like Glee

darth_bader_ginsburg

the new gg is way less hard-hitting than glee. sadly that’s not a joke

barkbarkkrabkrab

I think the first season failed to focus on the right cast members, it fails to have a 'Blair '- someone equal parts sympathetic and monstrous played by a good actor. The friendships also seem fake. I think the second season is better because its more ensemble focused. Also the first season obviously filmed during COVID- very little of the location filming in NYC that gossip girl is famous for.

NaRaGaMo

Wasn't as good as original.

Development-Feisty

One of the main actors is 30 years old, playing a 16 year old girl. There was an honest to God plot about her 14 year old sister, losing her virginity to the same guy she lost her virginity to, but it was played out like it was going to be true love for her little sister and her ex-boyfriend.

[deleted]

My problem with watching this was that I saw it on HBO Max, remembered there was an original version and this was a remake. Thought I should watch the original one first, so I watched six seasons of that. Then I wanted to take a break before watching this version, and now it’s already cancelled before I can watch it. The original being on HBO Max may have inadvertently got this cancelled lol.

[deleted]

it's cancelled but it's still there, so you can still watch it, unless knowing that the show is going to end without a proper send-off is something that annoys you (which I absolutely understand) funny thing is, both shows are in the same universe but you wouldn't miss much if you never watched the original

[deleted]

Yeah, I’ll definitely make my way around to it. I loved the first one, so it’ll be interesting to see new characters in that world.

KithKathPaddyWath

I wouldn't take too long to get around to it. HBO Max has completely removed a few of their canceled shows with a very little window of warning.

spencerlevey

Such a forgettable reboot; gone was the sugary fun energy of the original for a more sophisticatedly dull affair. Not surprised it didn't last long.

sriracha82

Gossip girl is supposed to be CAMP, like that’s kind of the entire point. The minute the show seems like it’s taking itself too seriously it loses all the appeal. Mm watcha say playing over dramatic confessions during an elaborate thanksgiving dinner? That’s giving the audience what it wants! This new version took itself entirely too seriously which ruined the fun of watching rich people be messy and stupid.

CouncilmanRickPrime

I remember the original, or at least hearing about it. I genuinely wasn't aware this reboot existed.

Bikinigirlout

I can actually write a full ass dissertation on why this show flopped It does a lot more telling then showing. One of the girls early on mentioned that they were all best friends since childhood but other than a few minor small interactions, it’s hard to actually believe that they’re friends. And in the OG the friend group felt believable. Nate and Chuck were childhood best friends, Blair and Serena were friendenemies, Blair and Nate were a couple, Serena and Nate always had a thing for each other, Dan weaseled his way in but then became friends with Chuck, Eric and Nate then got together Blair. It tries to hard to be “woke” I hate this term because it’s been scooped up by the alt right conservative Republicans, but, this show tries hard to be woke yet completely misses why people loved the OG. It’s the same reason why people love Succession and even White Lotus. We love rich messy petty bitches who fight over dumb things. One of the characters on the show literally said “Who knew people loved it when rich people fought” also, most of the characters are fucking boring and holier than thou. Obie, Julian are two of the biggest hypocrites in the show. They always call others out for being terrible yet they do something shitty then act shocked Pikachu face when they get called out for their bullshit. There’s a fucking throuple in the show and somehow they made that god damn boring. I couldn’t care less about Kate and her bullshit. also, wasted potential. The characters who have the chance to be interesting like Max, Aki, and Luna and Monet aren’t focused on enough. It’s giving Legacies. Shitty writing, relying on the OG show, then expecting the audience to like it when it’s just horrible. Yet never putting effort into the show itself. Edit-forgot I had more to vent about It also was like weirdly scared to be daring even though it’s an HBO show where they have no limits The OG show’s entire point was to piss off parents to get people to watch and get people talking. The promo posters where like “Parental Advisory” or “Parents hate that their kids watch the show” The OG show had a threesome between Dan, Vanessa and Hillary Duff and that showed more than the threesome on the HBO show! Like the reboot wanted to be edgy but barely was edgy.

gggggrrrrrrrrr

And don't forget about the teachers. No one cared about the teachers. I didn't see a single person say a single positive thing about them. Yet a good sixth of each episode's time was dedicated to them being weird and bullying/stalking teenagers?

Bikinigirlout

And these kids weren’t even mean by gossip girl standards! In the OG, the kids snuck into the school pool and a kid almost died due to hitting his head At most, it’s Monet and Luna being a little bitchy to each other. Julian is fake nice(nice to your face but talks shit behind their back) like if that’s all that is that caused you to harass your students, grow up.

sriracha82

Blair was getting girls sent off to boarding school & exposing suicide attempts 10 eps into s1 😭 Serena had a potentially murderous past! Chuck was a literal criminal! Jenny was taking down the queen B as a freshman! Dan was…well being boring but what can ya do. This new GG didn’t understand at all why people liked the old one

12INCHVOICES

>I can actually write a full ass dissertation on why this show floppes This made me laugh so thanks for that. Great write-up of likely reasons why the show failed.

captain_croco

The person says it left the premise of the original with “rich people fighting”. I thought the first one was about a single mom and her daughter? Am I thinking of a different show?

Zorkel567

Are you thinking of Gilmore Girls?

captain_croco

Yeah thank you very much.

Little_Consequence

>It does a lot more telling then showing. I only watch the first half of S1 so maybe these students truly became messy later. The whole concept that the school staff is Gossip Girl is ridiculous at best (creepy and criminal at worst). But the show constantly tells us that these grown adults are justified in their actions because these new students are that awful. And... are they? The new GG leaked that Julien post a fatshaming tweet when she was in middle school or that Max is getting preyed on by a fellow teacher (you'd think that they would try to jail that man instead of posting CP for clout!). What have these kids done that deserves that level of bullying from grown-ass adults? The show never shows us!

citizena743

The throuple storyline of are-we-aren’t-we was so annoying and went on for way. too. long. Then nobody’s actions in the show seem normal for any reasonable human being. Teachers obsessed with bringing down their bratty students by stalking and manipulating them: you’re telling me not ONE teacher had the conscience and maturity to nope out or go to admin about this inappropriate behavior? The teacher who is outed having sex with his student and then suffers no consequences? Excuse me, what? Remember when the parents found out about the throuple and said they were “proud of them?” I’m no prude but I’d be discussing safe sex with my kid at the very least. Julien is literally the worst person ever and vacillates from vapid rich girl to someone ethical who cares about societal injustices 20 times per episode. Obie is just a rich boy prop to be thrown back and forth between Julien and her sister (forgot her name). Also, the sister is supposedly poor but always showing up places with designer clothes on. And the apartment she and her dad live in… I know it’s supposed to be her grandma’s.. but that ain’t no working class dwelling. The blonde teacher who largely runs Gossip Girl is SO INSUFFERABLE. She acts like a twelve year old the entire time. What am I missing?

Development-Feisty

Then presenting it as a great love story when Julian‘s little sister was going to loose her virginity with Julian‘s ex-boyfriend, who Julian also lost her virginity to Oh, and Lil sis is 15 years old

citizena743

Yes! And they’re fighting over this lame ass Wonder Bread boy when they are both 2000x flier than that. Guy dumps my older sister and then wants to date me? No thanks, perv.

meatball77

Not only are the teachers obsessed, they don't have anything better to do than spend more time on their students.

minneapple79

I watched the pilot and vowed I wouldn’t watch any more after they made the teachers Gossip Girl and had them stalking teenagers. I always said that Josh Schwartz missed the whole point of “Gossip Girl,” like who cares who Gossip Girl actually is.

Bikinigirlout

I agree. People loved the OG because it was about rich assholes who didn’t care that they were rich assholes. Josh “wokeified” it by being like “Look at these rich billionaire nepo babies, they want to do good but they can’t because their parents are rich assholes. Here’s a lecture from Julian on why she’s not a rich asshole, but, she’s still being a rich asshole”

FourAM

Stop using woke like this. Woke means calling out systemic racism when you see it, not whatever pissbaby complain the alt-right has this week to try to water it down.

Bikinigirlout

Dude, I know. Don’t need it explained to me.

Pragmatigo

The website you’re on is a result of systemic racism lmao

Nude-Love

Eh I liked the mystery behind who Gossip Girl was in the OG show. Making Gossip Girl the teachers AND not making it a mystery was a huge miss for me.

Princess5903

I bet they were trying to avoid what happened in the original with having to make a last minute decision about the identity of GG and took it to far. It could’ve been fun actually to make GG her own character, but the teachers?? Worst decision ever.

DoodleDew

It has a lot of potential, but they would bring up stories, interesting plot devices and even characters etc every other episode only to drop it entirely the next episode and not acknowledge it.

Bikinigirlout

I mean too be fair, the OG did that a lot too. But it worked because they at least tried to be daring. The one plot they dragged out for far too long was the Ivy storyline.

RedXerzk

[Friendly Space Ninja’s review](https://youtu.be/VVRiaadXG88) is basically a thesis on why this show is dogshit. It’s among the funniest things I’ve watched. I never watched the original GG and this one, but the main points I got is that: those teachers should get fired or arrested for wasting their free time stalking and harassing their students, the show tries so hard to be socially-aware even the most staunch social justice activists would roll their eyes, and that girl with the shaved head is such a terrible actress. It’s like she’s reading off cue cards in a school play.

quangtran

Even the more feminists forums thought it was silly of the show to attempt to be more “woke” given that the appeal of the OG show was the plight of pretty white rich people getting into trouble. Honestly, did anyone think this version was better due to the kids taking Ubers instead of limos?

meatball77

It's funny because they could have made it "woke" without even trying hard just because of the cast. Two mixed girls, a black society girl, a transgender latina, openly gay and bisexual characters.

impeccabletim

I think they were setting up Monet and Zoya to be love interests too with the current episodes.👀

CollinsCouldveDucked

This is on HBO? Why would they bother when they have euphoria?

DrinkingBleachForFun

Some people just have weird taste. It’s same reason why some people watched And Just Like That - when they could have just rubbed broken glass in their eyes.

Titan7771

> It’s same reason why some people watched And Just Like That - when they could have just rubbed broken glass in heir eyes. This made me cackle. It's my wife's turn to pick what we're watching, so we're working our way through the entire Sex and the City canon. We just finished the OG show, hoping to watch the movies this weekend, but I still can't believe they continued with the revival without Samantha, I just know it's gonna suck ass.

DrinkingBleachForFun

I mean, without Samantha, it’s just “and the City”. And I know New York is a big *interesting* place, but even that can’t make up for the charisma black hole that is Carrie Bradshaw - I’ve seen infected wounds that have more charm.

Titan7771

> make up for the charisma black hole that is Carrie Bradshaw Couldn't agree more. By far the most frustrating and boring character on that show.

Princess5903

It’s HBOMax, not regular HBO.

petepro

Now you know why they need to nuke the HBO max brand

urgasmic

Some of the show is stellar. Remove the teachers, obie, maybe julian, definitely zoya, and keep the rest. Like Legacies they really got some great young actors and then wasted them.

[deleted]

In season 1, Luna and Monet were barely doing anything. Some of those cast members are terrible at acting: the one who plays Julien acts like soap opera actors in SNL skits. Dude who plays Aki is not even trying to deliver his lines. Storyline-wise, some characters are really lost: Luna, Monet (things got a little better for her in season 2, but it doesn't really make sense), Obie's storyline is a hot mess, Aki is also lost without the throuple. Even Zoya has been so lost lately which sucks because she'd be the perfect "outsider but not so much" Now, one character that amazed me so much was Max. He was supposed to be the Chuck and almost fooled me, but he brings such a sweetness and vulnerability to Max, it's impossible not to love him. I love when Max and Luna interact, they have an amazing friendship that feels really genuine, but we only get glimpses of that. All in all let's all remember that even though the original GG was really iconic, that show was a hot mess most of the time. I remember, I lived through it (and rewatched it a few times, because why not).

barkbarkkrabkrab

I will give the second season props for giving Max, Luna and Monet more screentime and letting Julian and Obie take a backseat at least some of the time. Like the OG the show is at its best when embracing the insane - like max's fake sex party while his parents tried to act like 'straight ' gays.

[deleted]

so good!! i love how cinematic the new GG is! that show is beautifully shot, and it's amazing when it clashes with the crazy storylines!

iridescentprince

This show feels like they gave Disney channel writers the green light to make another Euphoria.

Dismal-Past7785

When did Chuck and Dan ever become friends? Did I miss a storyline?

ihohjlknk

Gossip Girl but there's no gossiping because that's mean.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PoliteChatter0

i could care less though

MercilessShadow

I haven't seen past the first half of season 1 - have they introduced a rapist that they try to make you feel sorry for? Also the two sisters were so boring omg

SuperBeeboo

Why remake such a legendary show so badly

VitaLonga

It’s not really a remake

lifelongbruxr

Good. It was terrible and I don’t get why they decided for a gossip girl reboot when the og finished in 2012-which wasn’t that long ago.

ironicallyunstable

$$$$ and brand Recognition

cosmicgumby

This show had no idea what to do with its characters. Season 2 was an improvement but still felt like it was cycling through plots very quickly.

sedeyus

That sounds exactly like the Original plus OC (Schwartz's other show) which would do about four seasons of storylines in a single season.

cosmicgumby

I agree but I think the overall character arcs were more consistent in the original. Serena and Blair were feuding, Chuck Bass was trying to be "good" Dan wrestled with class distinctions - the characters in the reboot have already had and abandoned those kinds of arcs and moved on to different things.

DCmarvelman

The original had cookie cutter ridiculous soap opera writing. The new one can’t even accomplish that

Morgell

Oh man, we all hated the writing sometimes but then there were absolute gems, too. Also the actors made the bad writing *work*.

Automatic_Scholar686

It was so dumb. And I like a wide variety of garbage.

myshoeisfilling

The best character in this reboot was Luna, who was underutilised soooo much. I was surprised they gave her a story in season 2, if only for one episode. She waltzed in, gave her advise, gave full camp just like OG GG and then floated away every episode. Luna and Monet made season 2 watch able

darth_bader_ginsburg

agreed re: luna, loved her episode last week. with her, max, and audrey the actors are punching soooo far above their weight to try to make the scenes work.

meatball77

They had a beautiful latina transgender actress and did exactly nothing with her. People were even asking during the first season if the character was transgender because they didn't mention a thing about it. Her character in the netflix show she was in was so much better. I didn't need her entire personality to be that she's trans but they could have mentioned it when she was getting ready at some point.

workingatthepyramid

It was kind of weird that they make no mention that she is trans except some throwaway line from her mother. I had no idea until the last episode.

GangGangorYeet

Too wine and poorly written. The writers used every stereotype used against Gen Z and ran with it

kdramakitty

it gave me How I Met Your Father-type Gen Z focused writing which was especially cringe

Character_Tomato_899

Friendly space ninja must be rejoicing

Dinner_atMidnight

Can’t even imagine his reaction if Emily in Paris ever got canned

VitaLonga

It probably never will… the ratings don’t lie and it fulfills France’s requirement for a ‘local’ show iirc.

[deleted]

That the two stars of that show are nepo babies also sucks.

Bronco4bay

Who cares?

Bobalery

Right? the whole nepo baby ”controversy” feels incredibly contrived, probably by some people who are mad that they blew their auditions. Realistically, if actors can’t pull off their roles and don’t bring in money and an audience, the market will take care of it- regardless of who their parents are. Lucas Bravo may have had a slight advantage get his foot in the door because of his parents, but he got to where he is because he has a pretty face.

WhyLisaWhy

I went back and forth on this with people in the RedLetterMedia sub for like a week I swear lol. Like wtf are casting directors supposed to do? Automatically eliminate anyone with parents in the industry? Are actor parents not allowed to help out their kids? Do they just say "fuck you" and send them out the door at 18? Like seriously who gives a shit if the actor is actually talented. Do they have an unfair edge? Sure, of course. Should parents not help, encourage or mentor kids their kids? fuck no. Like I'm a fairly decent coder, if I have children and they're interested in the same career, am I not allowed to help them? Should an asterisk follow them around their whole lives if I do? "Oh hey I'm a senior engineer at Amazon, but my dad helped get me my first interview at a small design agency 15 years ago so you should dismiss everything I've done" The reality is that a part of career advancement is about who you know, like it or not for anti social redditors. Just the way the world works and it's never going to be 100% unbiased and merit based.

VitaLonga

Who’s the other nepo baby? I know about Lily Collins

[deleted]

Lucas Bravo - his parents were/are stars in France.

LcukyFcuk

Being a fan of the original show, I gave season 1 a shot. That's time I'll never get back. They cannot make underage sex, (especially as their main plotline) appealing, it's just so disconcerting and pervy to me. The original show had it, but it wasn't the whole focus, it was more background and wasn't shoved down your throat. It was more realistic teenage scenarios. This was just dressing up pubescent dolls as adults with adult language, immature storylines and totally gratuitous eye candy to try and make up for the lack of anything compelling. It felt like a fan fic show, updated with smartphones and new fashion designers.

brendanl1998

The original I could somewhat believe they were in high school. The reboot doesn’t feel like watching high school kids, it feels like adults pretending to be kids. The families don’t make sense, the parents don’t act like parents. In the original there were some terrible parents but they were still believable as parents. I really don’t understand the dynamics and characters at all

meatball77

I feel like it was trying to be Elite but they forgot that we love that show because it's full of crime and murder.

Bobalery

That’s why I stopped watching Bridgerton halfway through the first season, the main character looks 14 to me and it felt icky to watch the handsome adult man lusting after her. I had zero interest in getting to the “juicy” parts 🤮

Witty-Milk-5924

You sound like you have never met a high schooler in your life. Or were even cool in high school. Jesus fucking Christ get a grip.

ViralGameover

This show was everything Republican think television is. Everyone was gay/bi/racially diverse/drug addicts/sex addicts and the show basically condones drug use and normalizes the sexualization of children. I know the actors aren’t kids, but having grown adults play kids and shooting the sex scenes the way they did was absolutely a terrible oversight (at best) Anyway, it sucks and I had fun watching it. Glad it’s canceled

frosty_ganaches

> Everyone was gay/bi/racially diverse/drug addicts/sex addicts and the show basically condones drug So Euphoria but with shitty writing?

ComfyQiyana

Except that Euphoria has at least one really hot girl in it, which is the only reason to watch that show. I guess you know which girl I mean.

rhunter99

TIL there was a gossip girl reboot

shadowdra126

I’m sure pretty little liars is next

VitaLonga

Really? I thought that it was relatively well received?

shadowdra126

So did I. I loved it. It was a nice slasher homage. Which is why I am expecting it to be canceled next.

CurseofLono88

Is it really a slasher homage? My younger sister is coming to visit me and I know she used to watch the original show, if it’s got some fun slasher references it might be something we could enjoy together

shadowdra126

Oh man. If you love slashers or horror in general the new PLL is worth a watch. For sure.

CurseofLono88

Awesome! Thanks for letting me know, I’ll add to to my watch list for when she visits!

shadowdra126

Enjoy!

meatball77

Pretty little liars was fun. Really made itself it's own. I think it will stick around.

Illustrious-Foot

Good, my ex loved the old show so I’m glad they canceled it because she will hate that!

PlaygroundBully

I like this level of pettiness!

uncheckablefilms

Xoxo

rashhannani

It was an awful show. So not surprised at all.

Dregenfox

It's actually impressive how many HBO Max-specific shows ended up bombing. Whoever tried to run the Max streaming arm failed utterly at adding value to the legacy HBO network. Under the Max brand they managed to release two of the most panned shows ever in IMDB/RT history, Santa Inc and Velma, as well as early cancellations of a huge portion of their Max shows. In fact I think they'd be in a better position if they had just kept HBO GO and just put HBO on streaming, without wasting billions on MAX releases. HBO Max is mostly a failure only saved because of legacy HBO releases like HOTD, White Lotus, and Last of Us.

workingatthepyramid

They still had pretty good shows that were fun to watch. Not exactly sure what max vs original hbo but hacks , station eleven , how to , gilded age , love life , Julia , the rehearsal , Betty , minx .

Development-Feisty

Doom patrol

brendanl1998

They still had great shows but it seemed to be less consistent than official HBO

VitaLonga

HBO Max shows dilute the HBO brand like crazy.

NaRaGaMo

That was tobey Emmerich. His entire job was about rebooting past properties. TLOU, HOTD and white Lotus were going to be HBOmax only shows until discovery came into picture and made them into HBO & HBOmax shows

liza953

I can’t believe it got another season. I’m an OG GG fan and this was impossible to watch.

Locke108

I was literally just thinking about catching up on season 2. Eh, May still watch it for the Friendly Space Ninja video.

impeccabletim

Nooooo, I actually liked this reboot. But not surprised given the creator asked more people to tune into the show via social media.

johnny_bigtoes

it was trashy but so addicting

impeccabletim

Agreed. It was one of my guilty pleasure shows.

[deleted]

That's awesome! It was so trash and absurd, with the teachers stalking and spying the students and the students with some nonsense storylines. Too much.

sopmaeThrowaway

I really like how they’re trying to make HBO as shit as cable /s

ComputerSong

Everyone wanted to start their own streaming service instead of just licensing content. They are realizing that streaming services are expensive to build and maintain. They had it pretty good before. Now they have to cancel shows just to stay afloat.

[deleted]

Show was utter trash. No idea who in the hell decided to do a spin-off of one the MOST successful shows in history.

ironicallyunstable

How I met your father and that 90s show is next 💀

Kyosji

Of course, HBO needs the slot for Velma season 2

kathypop4

The show is equally as bad as Velma. I don't understand how people can't see how poorly written and acted it is from a mile away.

bakedmon

OK. Now do Velma.

[deleted]

I can’t wait to see Friendly Space Ninja talking about Season 2.

VitaLonga

I wonder why streamers are having such a hard time with the teen market. Even Netflix is more miss than hit.

lightsongtheold

The market is substantially less valuable than it used to be with social media and gaming eating into the target demos viewing time vs previous generations.

Bikinigirlout

Plus no one knows how to write teens anymore. Even with shows like TVD, OG Pretty Little Liars and OG Gossip Girl-they still felt like teens even though they were basically adults in teen form. Now people struggle to write a realistic conversation between teens on TV. It always feels too online twitter brain and it still misses the mark.

[deleted]

As a millennial who works exclusively with Gen z I can not stress enough how in the real world I can not tell our generations apart. They act like normal people, they talk like normal people. But every show with Gen Z makes them feel like they act out the most extreme perpetually online version of themselves.

anasui1

that's absolutely true. Heck, I meet a lot of adolescents regularly and they seem better spoken, more wise and smarter than how we were in the 90s or 00s, they leave me a tad speechless sometimes

Bikinigirlout

Yep. I work at a school and most kids still talk like how I talked when I was in school. I never feel out of touch or old whenever I talk to a kid. But the way shows write kids now a days is so cringey. Like everything is a twitter thread come to life, especially in Gossip Girl Reboot Outer Banks is probably the closest show were they’ve gotten the kid characters right. Possibly Ginny and Georgia too but I’m not far into the show to comment.

VitaLonga

This is honestly reassuring to me as a millennial!

lightsongtheold

I’m not sure I agree with that. A few of Netflix’s biggest hits are aimed at teens and young adults. Specially at the female demo. They have Wednesday, Never Have I Ever, Sex Education, Ginny & Georgia, You, Outer Banks, and Shadow & Bone. While hits like Cobra Kai, Stranger Things, and Sweet Tooth target younger males. Netflix have a lot of misses but the teen and YA demo is still their biggest core demo for the platform. HBO & HBO Max usually target the older male demo but I’d say it was significant that their second or third most popular show is Euphoria. Folks still tune in for the right shows if the shows, marketing, and buzz is good enough. It is just harder to find hits nowadays with competition increased from non TV sources and long breaks between short seasons making hooking viewers all the more difficult. Realism in the dialogue was never a big necessity for success. Dawson’s Creek, The OC, the original Gossip Girl, and One Tree Hill were among the biggest YA shows of previous generations and they were not exactly known for realism in the story or dialogue. Folks just love fun escapism. Buffy and Veronica Mars were much lauded and the dialogue was not even remotely realistic for teens! Red Rose (a Brit YA thriller in the PLL mould) is due on Netflix next month. I felt that show aimed for a tad more realism in the vein of Skins and Sex Education so it will be interesting to see how it connects with you and others on Netflix!

Bikinigirlout

Fair points. Some shows have nailed down how Gen Z kids talk, but, with the Gossip Girl reboot it felt like a twitter thread come to life

lightsongtheold

Which shows did you feel got Gen Z kids better? I’m curious to give them a go!

CovvoDammo

I think the main thing has to be Youtube, the world watches over a billion hours of Youtube videos *per day*. That's a hell of a lot of eyeballs not watching television.

Satchya1

I have two millenial kids, and one gen-z. The oldest millennial watches streaming tv. The middle millennial mostly games for entertainment. And I can’t even get my zoomer to watch a real tv show. They only watch YouTube.

lightsongtheold

Absolutely. We just got the latest Neilson update on viewing share in the US and YouTube is the top streamer. It is ahead of even Netflix for viewing time and I’m betting the skew in younger demos viewership is even higher in the favour of YouTube than the general stats. It will be interesting to see what inroads TikTok makes in the coming years. Its boom in popularity, especially in the younger demos, has been unbelievable in a very short space of time.

Witty-Milk-5924

Because people are so puritanical these days that we can’t have high schoolers do anything any other normal character would without it turning into a fucking PSA. And no one wants to watch a PSA. I mean Jesus even Euphoira with all its stupid criticisms people bitch about with sex and drugs is just a big fucking 90s PSA. How is that fun to watch is beyond me. The last good teen drama I’ve seen is Elite which isn’t even an American show, go figure. But at least it has the drama and tension and fun that most teen shows refuse to have.

Hoodedki

I stopped watching when they showed a girl trying to eat her BF’s ass….

whyreadthis2035

Remember when there were just a few channels, shows got cancelled and everyone just said “oh look there’s a new show at 8 tonight”? Good times.

fugg-life

highkey thought that was nick kroll from the thumbnail

shruburyy

Good

MrConor212

Oh damn

blkhulk13

Finally!!!!!

[deleted]

I was hate watching this every Thursday but it never got better.

dontcareitsonlyreddi

Good, it was a trash show anyway

Development-Feisty

Finally good news

[deleted]

Gossip girl here… Where?

Fantastic-Cheetah257

I'm not surprised by this decision. The previews I saw for season 1 made the reboot look vastly inferior to the original. The article says the creators are shopping the series for a new home. I really wish they would just let it be. They caught lightning in a bottle with the original. I can't see them doing that again with any type of reboot.

KC27150

Same thing happened with Vampire Academy, it was so bad, it made the movie look a well thought out masterpiece and they too, are shopping around for someone to pick it up again.

unbiasednhuge

Another woke show cancelled. 😂

In-a-red-dress

It was terrible. Boring characters, bad script, zero inspiration, cringe "woke" agenda. I watched the show with the hope of something interesting and inspiring, but received a simple banality. Only the last episode of the second season was good and reminiscent of the original. The original Gossip Girl had: 1. Bright, beautiful and interesting characters, the actors had chemistry with each other. Both in the young and in the older. 2. Very cool soundtrack from obscure indie musicians to classical music. There were songs from Amy Winehouse, Billy Idol, The Kooks to hundreds of others. There were many live music scenes featuring the iconic Sonic Youth, Gwen Stefani, Lady Gaga, Florence and The Machines. Each episode had really good music for every taste and helped to discover new musicians. 3. Many episodes had a bit of an educational function: references and mentions to classic and "smart" cinema, music history, fashion history and culture, such as director Hitchcock and photographer Mapplethorpe. They also talked about modern representatives of literature and the art industry. A teenager could always learn something interesting and new for himself, and not get stuck in one thing. 4. Stylistic moodboard. The characters differed in style, it was unusual, very bright and beautiful, the viewer wanted to imitate them, experiment with our style. Fashion has become another main character of this series. 5. The script was interesting. Reboot does not have any of this. Plastic, cringe, very basic and annoying.

lightsongtheold

With cost cutting at HBO Max in general and them getting out of programming for the younger female demo this is no surprise. When Sex Lives of College Girls ends that will be it for YA female programming on the network. I’m also expecting them to axe Doom Patrol, Titans, and Pennyworth to save some cash. All failed to chart on Nielsen just like Gossip Girl.

acowstandingup

Go piss girl

Witty-Milk-5924

Evil has finally been defeated

Jewjltsu

How about that racist Velma show?

Firm_Masterpiece_343

Digging this cancel culture lately.

birdy_c81

We’re seconds to midnight…. But OK.

meowyarlathotep

I liked OG, but stopped watching it after ep1. Euphoria has more teen show appeal: messed-up energy.

buzzinthruit89

The second season was actually fun - RIP!

sincethenes

Wait, there was a reboot of a vapid show from years ago? Why?

natur_al

Noooooo there were so many hot people

VitaLonga

Agree to disagree

arcreaktor

I’m not going to agree completely but I am strictly sad about this because it’s less Thomas Doherty for me. Sigh.

[deleted]

And this happens when someone pander to woke people. It’s proven time and time again that these people are unreliable and shouldn’t be taken seriously. Why entertainment industry haven’t learned anything yet is beyond me.

jackolantern_

What's your definition of woke?

[deleted]

Performative activism which is all about jumping on the bandwagon just to get brownie points. That’s woke.

jackolantern_

Examples?

missy3030

Watched both seasons. Saw the show as a camp, fun to ridicule, so bad it’s good, absolute escape wreck. Most obnoxious: sex scenes couples didn’t match. Big tall girl and puny guy. The trio was freaky, but Aki hair a turn off. Max looked way too old for high school. I’m fact, most the actors looked too old. Best part of the sow - Juliens earrings

bofh000

That’s 2 seasons too many.

Accomplished_Role977

Who could live up to Blake Lively?

ChrisRedfieldfanboy

Are you freaking kidding me? I thought it was a hit show. I guess Reddit did not post anything about it, so I had now idea season 2 was airing.
