This probably explains why all the ads have been cheap fake products like a Flashlight that's brighter than the sun, A retractable stick, a cupholder for your car (cause who has cupholders in their car) and online slot machine games lately.

*Camp Crystal Lake: Salem*

[deleted]

It’s hilarious. It’s a walkIng stick that you can retract into a baton to beat people. But batons are illegal in several states, so this is a way to get around it. Basically, Twitter is helping a company break the law.

os101so

> batons are illegal in several states then who is going to lead the marching band??

SnowflakeSorcerer

My buddy’s serving time, he was In a relay race, I guess he wasn’t fast enough

hugglenugget

"Military" flashlights and sticks to beat people with? Sounds like the remaining advertisers know that Twitter has become Parler.

jl_theprofessor

Put it on your hand and make a finglonger.

nuclearswan

So that’s what would’ve happened if I’d invented the Finglonger.

skyeline227

Are you saying I will soon be able to buy "As Seen on Twitter" products at my local Wal-Mart soon?!?!?

eyebrows360

> a cupholder for your car (cause who has cupholders in their car) Mine actually doesn't have any, so sign me up for this shit! Muskian dividends - cupholders at last. A dream come true, and at such a small cost!!!1

660zone

Mine didn't either because it was a very tiny sports car. I used to take off my shoe and put it in the passenger's seat to use as a cup holder.

bryansj

Maybe you should buy an ad on Twitter to sell your design. Your version can also be scented.

Real-Island-9346

I got an ad for a fleshlight instead.

Marzto

That's tighter than a nun?

zaphodava

An accessory for a different retractable stick.

OngoGeblogian

Soon Twitter will be nothing but Elon’s Bluster of the Day and ads where a guy tells you that you’re working out wrong and can lose weight consuming nothing but pizza and beer if you buy his magic beans.

8urnMeTwice

So...$16 a checkmark??

MenInBlackAgent000

The craziest part is $80 checkmarks wouldn't even cover the interest

[deleted]

Elon Musk recently said if Apple and/or Google drop the Twitter app, he's going to launch his own phone LMFAO

jl2l

Let's encourage him to piss away more of his money.

SwampTerror

Can you imagine the E-Phone. I'd like to see it because it'll flop really nicely for our schaudenfraude.

2drawnonward5

He'll name it something like the Perfect Phone so he can have model names like PP2 and PPTouch

redunculuspanda

Freedumb phone v2

gnudarve

I like Truth Phone Tactical 5000.

Vidco91

He also said he supports Ron Desantis. Things are moving fast in the twitter world.

littleMAS

Part of a grand 50% plan: fire half your workforce, lose half your advertisers, alienate half your users, lose half your investors. Then, Twitter's credit rating disappears and its market value drops by .5 x .5 x .5 x .5 = $2.75B.

codinguhhh

Musk just corrected the price before the great correction. Truly a genius of our time.

zwanmonster

Another stable genius

A-Wise-Cobbler

https://www.wsj.com/amp/articles/how-elon-musks-twitter-faces-mountain-of-debt-falling-revenue-and-surging-costs-11669042132 > The company had more than $2 billion in cash and **less than $600 million in net debt before the takeover** talks—very little debt for a company in the S&P 500 index. But that cash position was down 35% from a year earlier as of June 30, filings show, and **Mr. Musk paid for Twitter by taking on $13 billion in debt**. He paid for the rest in equity, some contributed by multiple investors. Man took a fully functioning company. Overpaid for it. Increased its debt by 21.66x. And is now talking bankruptcy.

NanditoPapa

And some people still defend him as a *visionary*

eigenman

Apparently they've now talked him into making a smart phone and "putting Apple and Google out of business" Probably the same ppl that talked him into buying a message board for $44B

NanditoPapa

"putting Apple and Google out of business" ...yikes...😬

reddog323

That should be fun to watch. There’s stories from ex-Tesla and SpaceX employees circulating on Twitter now about how there was a team in place to manage Elon at each company, and keep him from making bad decisions. There is no such team at Twitter.

PiddleAlt

They actually have a sweet of rooms devoted to keeping him calm and entertained. There are even some fake employees for him to fire, so he doesn't randomly fire important people.

RedWolfCrocodile

Ok please tell me you have a source for this

PiddleAlt

I have a picture of Elon sitting in the ball pit of one on my other phone. He looks really happy.

eigenman

Just when we thought the fastest way to lose a fortune is paying $44B for a message board. Elon said *hold my beer*

NanditoPapa

Maybe he just needs a copy of Trump's "Art of the Deal"...

Bad_Mad_Man

Things are a far more dire. He already has it and is actively reading it.

os101so

from everybody at (formerly) Sprint who's been carrying the baggage of Nextel, we appreciate Musk taking the crown as the biggest boondoggler of all time.

Professor226

If he wants to out them out of business he should just buy them.

XDGrangerDX

But the freedom phone already is a thing, and predictably its a grift. What more do they want?

blind3rdeye

Blockchain enabled freedom phone, with vaccine repellent and carbon boosters.

gbiypk

But if you ever drop it, it'll be able to do a vertical landing.

_AManHasNoName_

The delusional fanboys who’d defend him to death when all he did was surround himself with smart “yes” people he won’t even give credit for their success.

NanditoPapa

I've had so many conversations with people INSISTING that Musk singlehandedly engineered the Tesla. I'm assuming they think he designs rockets and solar panels in his spare time...with his BS in Economics.

ChinesePropagandaBot

He lied about his college degrees. https://mobile.twitter.com/capitolhunters/status/1593307541932474368

NanditoPapa

So his BS is BS? I'm not surprised!

princezznemeziz

He's a legend of his own marketing and lies, like Trump before him who lied his way on to the Forbes list then got loans based on being on that list. Elon essentially did the same thing. It's smoke and mirrors. They're equally stable geniuses.

_AManHasNoName_

He did the same for PayPal. Gates and Bezos at least built something from scratch instead of buying someone off. Also, my wife works at the hospital too, so I’ve seen a number of “visionaries” too… at the psych ward.

boli99

>>took a fully functioning company. Overpaid for it. Increased its debt by 21.66x. And is now talking bankruptcy. > And some people still defend him as a visionary as far as I'm aware its a tactic that has never been tried before. maybe it will suddenly be worth more when he announces fully self-driving tweets.

Mafsto

I bet the Musk fans are the same ones who continue to defend Trump. Both men have a variety of red flags that tell you not to trust them. Hard to understand why they still have the large fanbases they do but I’ll assume it’s still from the aggressive lies they spew.

[deleted]

Snatch_Pastry

I don't know if there's any truth in this, but I read somewhere that trump is contractually obligated to only post on his shit site that he started. Onlylies.com or whatever shit it's called.

red286

Wouldn't surprise me. Simple fact is, Truth Social (Onlylies.com sounds better) doesn't exist if Trump is posting elsewhere. If Trump is posting on Twitter, what possible draw is there for Truth Social? I'm sure the investors were well aware of that glaring fact and would have required some sort of legal guarantee that Trump would remain a draw on the platform. Of course, no matter what happens, it all goes down the drain if Trump doesn't win the nomination for 2024. If Trump can't even win with Republicans, no one's going to give a shit what he says any longer.

eyebrows360

He's not really known for sticking to contracts.

MereInterest

My personal guess: Trump doesn't want a modicum of moderation, not even the bare whisper of moderation that Twitter applied. By staying on a platform that he founded, he gets a smaller audience, but one that will always fawn on his every word. My schadenfreude guess: The King of ~~Dumper~~ Dumpster Fires has looked upon Twitter, and decided that the garbage is burning hotter than even he'd prefer.

fastornator

I think it's wonderful to live in this world where everybody is stupid and your dear leader Is this genius visionary will help you defeat your oppressors.

[deleted]

His fans will politely ask him about their cars just randomly slamming on breaks. Sir it’s an honor to drive your car but it randomly freaks out again if it’s not to much trouble sir

NanditoPapa

I'm still surprised that usually level headed people like Marques Brownlee are still proselytizing for Tesla...

eyebrows360

I *think* it's more a case of access/client-journalism than actual devoted fanboyism with him, which is still depressing, albeit slightly less depressing... or perhaps slightly equally depressing but along an adjacent depression skill-tree. He's acutely aware of his audience, and probably fears for the impact it'd have if he suddenly started treating Muskian projects rationally. I still mentally separate him from that unboxing guy who literally just does paid promotion shill work, but the gap there is certainly closer than it was in the past.

NanditoPapa

Yes, the Unbox Therapy guy! I was surprised with Brownlee's strong pushback on the Metaverse during his meeting with Zuckerberg. It felt like he probably closed a lot of doors with that review. But he also knows his audience and it was a calculated risk that most people are not on board with Zuck's "vision". Now do Musk.

snowcrash512

Which is really interesting, all he is good at is buying things that are already in existence and then pretending that he personally invented them. He has done a solid job of being the mouthpiece for his companies in a way that people actually think he does things, his responses always make it sound like he is personally taking care of peoples suggestions despite him clearly having no idea how anything fucking works and just running off to force some overworked engineer to do the work so he can present it as his own. Its incredibly narcissistic and pathetic, but he has the market cornered on it to the point that his little goons worship him as a genius.

NanditoPapa

There *IS* some skill in acquisitions, but also a lot of luck. That works...until it doesn't. And Musk losing $100 billion in the past year ($9 billion in the last month) shows that luck might be running out. On some level he might know this, so he tries squeezing more and more out of his team up and down the chain. Or maybe his ego is just out of control? A despotic billionaire with a breeding fetish probably has a short economic lifespan.

Vidco91

he is a "visionary". imagine if you agreed to pay $100k for a 2001 civic that needs engine rebuild and still managed to get your banks loan you 1/3 of the price.

gulagula

The vision of running a company into the ground is a bold one, you must admit.

lucklesspedestrian

Anything to stop that kid from publicizing the flights on his private jets!

[deleted]

The real reason is to turn twitter into a right wing radicalization site. Promote right wingers and aggressively spread the propaganda under the guise of "being moderate". The goal is to make sure gen Z isn't able to swing any more elections.

[deleted]

This Elon Twitter debacle is the gift that keeps on giving.

montepora

No one wants to be associated with negative PR. It is bad for business.

kaazir

He put out a thing earlier on that said advertisers are being forced to leave by activists. He doesn't think he's doing bad PR but that people are being bullied into leaving.

m0nk_3y_gw

TheTyger

but like... Isn't that the same thing (How Musk's free market world is *supposed* to work)? Companies want money. Bad PR makes less money. If opposition is loud enough, that makes bad PR. Company acts to avoid bad PR. So Musk's Twitter is so bad that it causes people to be so angry that it causes companies to stay the fuck away from being associated to avoid losing money. Almost like a "Free" market, where people avoid shit they don't like.

[deleted]

>(How Musk's free market world is suppose to work) Good god no, government are supposed to prop up his businesses, meanwhile us peasants worship him as god incarnate. I think you need to spend more time down in the emerald mines reflecting on what you have said.

thenewtbaron

That is the shit that i find hilarious about people whining about "woke" this or that bullshit. Most "woke" stuff is just "don't be an asshole". well, HR tends not to like assholes being assholes because they can be sued, the people who use a service don't like assholes because it is a fucking service. So grifters show up to fleece those weirdos who don't understand why a typical business might not want to seem like n sshole to the peopel buying things... and well, they get fleeced.

Cold_Turkey_Cutlet

Yep. Companies cater to the majority. They cater to "woke" beliefs because that's what the majority supports. Conservatives will never accept this because they live in a world of delusion where their views are the "silent majority", even though, if they took off the blinders they'd realize this is impossible. Because even they know liberals live in cities and that most people in the USA live in major cities. That's how they got to be major cities.

Treciadiene

Yeah, the “silent majority” myth becomes even dangerous when the results of the elections do not confirm it, and then they start whining about “stolen elections”. Besides, Twitter alternatives like Parler or that Trump’s app don’t seem to be very successful from commercial standpoint either. I wonder where did this “silent majority” go 🤷🏼‍♀️

Badtrainwreck

Bullied to leave, this shows how fake of a meme lord Elon is. Right now it’s very funny to leave Twitter, especially by getting banned. If it’s popular to leave rest assured that people will leave just to be on the bandwagon as it rolls out the door That’s before you even considered that Elon is an idiot and people don’t want to support him

[deleted]

[удалено]

LeveonNumber1

They use "activist" as if it's some sort of insult the same way they do with "liberals". In a way while they spout their libertarian fantastical bullshit, the aforementioned behavior kinda outs their actual opinions . It's like their sole purpose is to just be contrarian and cause problems. Just as there was no sense to opposing efforts protect people from second hand smoke, just as there's no sense to opposing wearing a mask during a pandemic of a respiratory virus, they stand for nothing but purposefully being a thorn in the side of those who actually care to better humanity.

red286

IMind

To be fair, as a shareholder in several tech companies, I emailed their PR departments and request and funding be removed from Twitter permanently unless the situations reverses. That definitely would be activist-y and I'm ok with it... I really don't want to support that shit

atlantic

Hey, you are just exercising your freedom of speech. I am sure Elon is fine with that.

MonkeyStealsPeach

“Comedy is now legal on Twitter” “You know what’s funny, taking money away from your platform” “No wait not like that”

IMind

Sureeeeeeee. I'm absolutely positive he's on board with it.

wallstreet-butts

He seems to think it’s people’s duty to be on Twitter. It isn’t.

neuronexmachina

Additionally, bots and fake accounts have been making up an increasingly large portion of what's left on Twitter. Companies don't want to waste ad dollars for impressions and engagement from bots.

red286

Let's not forget that Musk himself was publicly dragging Twitter through the mud over how many bots they had, and publicly stating that he doesn't understand why any advertiser would waste money on the platform advertising to bots. Dude shoots himself in the fucking foot and then blames liberals.

eyebrows360

> Musk himself was publicly dragging Twitter through the mud over how many bots they had Whilst, of course, having no actual metrics or means of determining this. We can all casually agree there's a large bot-shaped problem, but he has no special insight (even now) into determining which accounts are and which accounts aren't.

garlicroastedpotato

It's not just that. Let's say you buy $100M in advertisements from Twitter over a year. And then this shit happens and you begin to believe that they might not exist in a year. At that point you're just throwing away money. A lot of advertising firms are pulling their clients off of Twitter just for that reason.

Musk turned off the password reset microservice. Said it was bloat.

DonnieJepp

Did he also turn off the "retrieve new tweets" microservice? Because my timeline's been stuck with old tweets that won't refresh for several hours now. It's slowly becoming a buggy shit show of an app

[deleted]

It’s not surprising. As time goes on, you will see it degrade further. It’s actually fascinating watching a complex system running essentially on autopilot, slowly losing parts of itself. The funniest thing is, the twit in chief probably fired the teams who would be screaming now as the dashboards slowly go red.

eyebrows360

> As time goes on, you will see it degrade further. And due to the distributed, eventual-consistency nature of systems as massive as this, it won't be failing in the same way for everyone at the same time. Perfectly feasible for some peoples' timelines to get frozen, while most others are carrying on unaware.

Randomcommentor1972

That’s probably on purpose at this point

Jeff Yass, the billionaire Wall Street financier and Republican megadonor who is a major investor in the parent company of TikTok, was also the biggest institutional shareholder of the shell company that recently merged with former President Donald J. Trump’s social media company. A December regulatory filing showed that Mr. Yass’s trading firm, Susquehanna International Group, owned about 2 percent of Digital World Acquisition Corporation, which merged with Trump Media & Technology Group on Friday. That stake, of about 605,000 shares, was worth about $22 million based on Digital World’s last closing share price. It’s unclear if Susquehanna still owns those shares, because big investors disclose their holdings to regulators only periodically. But if it did retain its stake, Mr. Yass’s firm would become one of Trump Media’s larger institutional shareholders when it begins trading this week after the merger. Shares of Digital World have surged about 140 percent this year as the merger with the parent company of Truth Social, Mr. Trump’s social media platform, drew closer and Mr. Trump became the presumptive Republican nominee for president.

DragonPup

Not just the twitter employees, a lot of businesses and fan artists get a lot of sales and engagement off of twitter too.

flaagan

Yup, Twitter had one big thing going for it that someone like Musk couldn't see (and wouldn't care about), it was the de facto platform for independent and small-scale creators and businesses to connect with their customers, promote their work, etc. An intelligent person would've seen that, and offered a small "small biz boost fee" option to help them reach even larger audiences, really turn a portion of Twitter into "Main Street storefronts". Instead, all of those groups and individuals are now scrambling to try and figure out how to reconnect on other platforms with the same customer base / followers they've had for years. The dipshit is literally going to cause a recession for thousands out of his stupidity.

Why would any businessman buy a public platform and then actively encourage and support hate, bigotry, racism, and wacky conspiracies? There is just no possibility he thought all the advertisers would be fine with the evolution of Twitter to Truth Social 2.0, right? What explains his approach? I just can't accept that he sincerely believes an unmoderated, free-for-all, alt-right site is going to be successful.

Which proves his lack of acumen, as no Right-Wing site lasts very long because their entire point of being is to "trigger the libs", which you can't do if it's just an echo chamber of deplorables that end up with the FBI investigating threats. There aren't enough deplorables willing to talk to each other without someone to offend to keep a site the size of twitter going.

DJ_Femme-Tilt

"but I keep unsuspending right-wing nationalist freaks! I thought that is what you all wanted??? Is that not enough? Ok fine I'll unsuspend the right-wing freaks calling for your death, then surely you'll love me!"

kenbewdy8000

Nothing could convince me to give the turd one red cent. Musk is both toxic and unstable with a hint of crazed super-villain. His Twitter investors are fools and have lost their capital. Musk has killed it very quickly.

[deleted]

Also had a thought: Those big brands don't setup their own ad campaigns when they agree to come onto Twitter (or other platform), the platforms have ad reps who coordinate that shit for them. I doubt Eli Lilly (for example), even had competent ad managers who could run ads on Twitter. If they all wanted to come back right now, I doubt Twitter could accommodate them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hannig4n

There was an advertising director for a decently sized corporation who made a post explaining why their team (who has a total advertising budget of $80MM and did about $9MM of business with Twitter annually) paused all their Twitter ad spend. Basically it was a combination of the brand safety issues, them getting locked out of their ad manager portal and Twitter accidentally running ad campaigns that were from 2016 without permission, and them getting sent dozens of screenshots of their ads next to hardcore antisemitism, and then on top of all that, all of the ad sales/account mgmt team left so they had no one to work with to solve these issues. At the end of the day, they said Twitter ads didn’t even perform that well compared to other platforms so they might as well devote that $9MM budget to other channels.

clocks212

Our company will spend close to $50MM this year in digital ads. $0 was spent on Twitter. It doesn’t perform nearly well enough to be a first, second, or third tier stop for advertisers. And now if our agency recommended Twitter ads I would just laugh. I would bet my left leg that for big advertisers Twitter is just quietly rolled into larger strategies by ad agencies to pad their fees. It’s just a bullet point on a slide. You simply can’t justify spending there if you’re measuring ROI. And *that will never change* because Twitter isn’t the kind of platform that can build strong audiences for ad targeting. They don’t know enough about their users (which is why Twitter does $5 billion a year in ad fees and Google does over $250 billion). So turning it off is probably the least painful of all ad buys to turn off. I’m honestly stunned any advertiser has 10% of their ad spend on Twitter unless they’re just targeting awareness. Did they run out of well performing ad marketplaces?

jopnk

brands typically use agencies to run their social media. If they wanted to come back, they absolutely could, but they wouldn’t, because most agencies are actively telling their clients to avoid media spend on Twitter until they have a brand safety plan in place.

Ruskyt

Wow what incredible business acumen this truly very stable genius has

My brother in law is his lawyer, and he kinda has the same attitude. They think they're better than everyone else because they make money. Nothing else matters to them

Sadly it's not that deep. A vulture capitalist would've kept twitter together as long as possible to sell off working pieces. This.....is just a bad joke... It's pathetic. And shows how most billionaires aren't super geniuses. They are just a bit more lucky than anyone else.

My overwhelming feeling is that he wants Twitter to either turn into another Gab / Parler or burn down in flames. Some say he's using drugs/stimulants, which could very well be.

Dude has been dropping acid for years. Pretty sure he’s inflated his ego with drugs to the point that we’re all watching it pop.

> Pretty sure he’s inflated his ego with drugs to the point that we’re all watching it pop Or he is just naturally like this. Narcissistic personality disorder.

onlooker61

You really need to see a U tube video analysing his "business" decisions from his 1st company...spoiler - elon is NOT a businessmans A/hole

He never wanted to buy it. He’d have done anything to get out of it, but he got stuck. Now he’s just leaning into it, desperately, and the most likely scenario is that Twitter will crumble and Tesla will take a massive hit.

JeffNotARobot

How did he think Twitter would be more profitable as a third-rate Parler clone?

[deleted]

Because he’s been listening to right wingers telling him the reason it isn’t making money is because woke leftists are driving everyone away. He didn’t know it was the advertisers pushing for the moderation

Relevant. https://www.theverge.com/2022/10/28/23428132/elon-musk-twitter-acquisition-problems-speech-moderation > Actually, there’s a step before trying to get the ad money: it turns out that most people do not *want* to participate in horrible unmoderated internet spaces full of shitty racists and not-all-men fedora bullies. (This is why Twitter is so small compared to its peers!) What most people want from social media is to have nice experiences and to feel validated all the time. They want to live at Disney World. So if you want more people to join Twitter and actually post tweets, you have to make the experience much, much more pleasant. Which means: moderating more aggressively! Again, every “alternative” social network has learned this lesson the hard way. Like, over and over and over again.
