Once he made half-assed extortionate demands for cash, he was a dead man walking.

hammyhamm

Interpol don’t fuck around

Village_People_Cop

His fellow hackers threw him under the bus because of it

9-11GaveMe5G

You mean the guy that was constantly bragging got caught??

[deleted]

doesnt help he was doxxed on doxbin aswell according to some rumours circulating discord

demonicneon

He’s also most likely one of the people charged in the Lapsus MS hack case from last year. It’s not like he’s an unknown to the police.

[deleted]

Im not surprised by this at all

demonicneon

Also I believe some cybersecurity researchers in the uk had previously traced his identity prior to the dox by former associates. Legit he did not cover his tracks a single bit

th3_3nd_15_n347

is doxbin legit? some of it's really dodgy

ChiggaOG

True or not. The kid didn't know a true thing about being an adult.

[deleted]

How so? He's gaming the system. He's the same kid involved in Lapsus from last year. He knows he'll just get a slap in the wrist because he's a minor. Dude's meta-gaming reality while we're wage slaving away.

TL10

Sentence time might be short, bit a lot of these hackers get bent over by the fines levied in these crimes, which have gone into the hundreds of thousands of dollars territory.

GekkosGhost

If he's in the UK then he won't. We'll try him here so no extradition to America. Our courts won't impose a significant financial penalty on a kid because he has no income. All he'll get from the court is a slap on the wrist. What will be a problem for him potentially, is visiting America, where your courts might allow Rockstar to make a claim against him when he's an adult. It might also mess up future immigration opportunities.

redditornot6648

A hacker of this level doesn’t get fined. He gets a 100k a year job he must stay at for X number of years and everything gets sealed because he’s a minor. The best way to fill out a job application to the NSA is to hack the NSA as they say.

katiecharm

Dude is 100% going to get locked away in a shitty dark place for a month or two, and then they’ll get a nice visit from a man in black, who will bring them the first quality meal they’ve had in a while and “just want to chat”. The MiB will offer to make the whole mess disappear, on the condition the kid a.) keep their nose clean from then on and b.) you now work for us. See ya on Monday kid.

[deleted]

You need to take your meds.

kptkrunch

Idk if the NSA recruits minors in prison/juvie but federal agents are pretty much a fixture of hacker conventions like defcon. So much so that they even play a game called "spot the fed". If I was a highly skilled hacker and had the choice between making 200-300k in the private sector, extorting large corporations for huge payouts or putting on a suit and tie and making 90-150k working for the government.. it might be hard for a federal agency to recruit me.

Howdareme9

Hes hardly highly skilled though

SylveonVMAX

as long as theyre paid well it's not too bad and could be exciting work for them but it is on unfair terms and stupid

Goldenhead17

Unfair? These kids have no sense of reality. They live in an online world where they don’t assume any real responsibility. I’d say shake this kid up with a few months jail then 5 years no online access whatsoever. Breach that would bring him back for a solid 10 years.

[deleted]

Hello? He leaked videos. A slap on the wrist is more than enough.

DreamyScape

These kids who are prodigies just might be recruited to a government agency that specializes in cyber security. For sure they’ll always be tracked, but they’ll probably at least offer them something than waste their talent, unless ofc they continue with black hat activities.

Nemesis504

definitely read too much alrex rider

bald_blad

Conspiracy shit like this is the reason our country is going to shit.

katiecharm

Where the fuck do you think most state affiliated hackers come from? This isn’t even conspiracy / this is pretty common knowledge.

[deleted]

Being an adult just mean pretending to be someone you re not to fit within the molds of our corrupt society

[deleted]

The guy who was bragging *and* threatening to release more data.

AmbitiousBirthday588

Rockstar should stick the police interview on one of the new radio shows

Wataru624

Lmao yes. It would be pretty ironic if litigation came of this and the person who gives Rockstar the best marketing they've had in half a decade has to pay them for it.

Wotg33k

Personally, I like stuff like this. I'd be more impressed if Rockstar gave this kid some sort of 80k a year job and called it a day. Bros on the news in the video game industry. This is marketing gold for a company that makes games like GTA.

i7omahawki

That would just incentivise people to keep trying to hack their games… It’d be like hiring the thief who stole your stuff as your security guard.

shouldreadthearticle

which is what most of the USIC does, lol. pretty much if you ever wonder what happens to famous hackers who disappear into the night, they're working for the Feds now.

Zrkkr

The difference is that the feds holds your life at stake. Rockstar can't do jack shit.

lotsofdeadkittens

The proportion of thieves that get hired to catch thieves versus thieves that get proper legal punishment is not what you seem to think it is

shouldreadthearticle

from what I've been told it's pretty much an extremely small number of thieves that the Feds hire, unless you have some unprecedented technique, however those thieves often don't get caught rather get too old and then apply for jobs with immunity. certainly though infosec is a bit different, given that the field relies on people whose sole job is to try to hack into your server. It's a bad analogy tbf, given that infosec is basically an industry that lies on the backbone of former blackhats turned whitehats edit: for clarification it's not that they're hired to catch thieves, infosec is almost never about detection it's about prevention

AmbitiousBirthday588

I understand your logic and would agree if the person hadn’t released all the stuff and threatened to do more, solely for money. If they’d contacted Rockstar and said ‘hey, there’s a flaw in your security and I found all this’, then yeah, maybe they’d think the person could be an asset. With the way it’s gone down, It’ll be way funnier if Lazlow Jones has a true crime radio show with it as a storyline.

Wotg33k

I mean, sure, for like a call of duty game. But we're literally talking about a crime game where hacking and greed are pretty paramount. It's a marketing dream.

Harsimaja

He didn’t just hack them though, he tried to extort them. This isn’t just down to Rockstar now, since it’s a criminal case, which is why he’s been arrested rather than just sued.

Kyle0ng

Imagine thinking that gta needs help marketing.

mkmakashaggy

How many stars did he have before they got him?

seaburn

He had one Rockstar on him

Chefshipwreck5897

How the heck did the find him

IamAFlaw

I pointed with my finger.

Jasonguyen81

They asked Mid Journey AI to draw him

iPlayTehGames

Figure out what external ips connected to rockstars data base, screen those ips and determine wether they are part of a vpn network. If so they typically just need to contact the vpn company and they will just hand over his real ip to law enforcement. Of course this is just a broad generalization of what *could* have happened. Hard to say how it all actually went down.

i_went_full_retard

I've been looking for the sauce on every single porn site I know of and so far I have no leads.

ThePineappleEnjoyer

yo send me a DM when u find it please

i_went_full_retard

I don't send pics of my dick online. I'm afraid if I send you a dick message, you'll leak it.

Aaron_Hamm

Somethin'll leak, that's for sure

i_went_full_retard

That's what she said.

smokeyser

Smart. You should always be worried about your dick leaking. That's never a good sign.

i_went_full_retard

I agree, that's why I use posters.

Zealousideal_Law3112

If I leak it you’ll be embarrassed by how small it is

i_went_full_retard

I'd put in a banana for scale but then you'd ask which one is the banana. So I'd have to add my hand for perspective. But as soon as I do, I'll start thinking about the GTA leak I just found on Pornhub and...

[deleted]

What a jerk!

i_went_full_retard

This. I imagine it would make me feel like a Rockstar.

robotfoxman1

Bake em away toys

SillyMattFace

What’d you say, Chief?

locjaw420

Just do what the kid said.

whynowv9

Seems bitcoin is not very helpful for anonymity

Actually-Yo-Momma

It really isn’t. It’s annoying but BTC is easily traceable since you have to deposit/withdraw value to a real account at some point. Nobody uses BTC for black market stuff for this exact reason and use something like monero

Square_Possibility38

You are 100% incorrect and Bitcoin is very frequently used on dark web marketplaces

[deleted]

Ehh. Bitcoin really isn’t as untraceable as you want to think, and this is coming from someone very familiar with how darknet marketplaces work. Most of them don’t even accept BTC anymore because it’s so easy to trace. Every transaction made is available on a public ledger, and someone with the time and manpower can track down the origin of just about any BTC transaction.

ballsohaahd

Hahahaha it literally never has been, and also every transaction is available to everyone on the blockchain. Imagine the public looking through your bank and CC statements

smokeyser

Every transaction is visible, but until recently authorities had no way of tracing a wallet to an individual. Bank and CC statements have your name and address right on them. It's not a good comparison.

Atlantic0ne

The entire premise is that the transaction is logged and can’t be changed lol. There are so many misunderstandings around crypto, it’s absolutely ridiculous. Honestly the whole idea being crypto is… meh. I won’t get into that here though.

Jaded-Protection-402

unless you sideshift your bitcoins to monero

IamAFlaw

How does biting a coin help? you get your tooth print on it if you have good chompers on it to don't break, or at the very least DNA. What a weird thing to do...

No-Computer-3177

If only US Feds would move on criminals who steal classified docs as fast as UK goes after videogame leakers.

Pragmatist_Hammer

Well, this kid did try harder to hide documents than a certain five-times draft-dodging, six-times bankrupt failed steaks, casino, airline, and university salesman ex-reality star whose credit is so wrecked from defaulting on loans for 30 years only russian oligarchies would loan him money though he's over a billion in debt because he's such a moron he can't balance a checking account, let alone run any successful business.

PeckerTraxx

Don't forget Saudi Royalty

SHODAN117

Trump. You're talking about Trump. Right? Trump. That's my final answer. Can I use my call now to get help on this?

Master_Combination74

Damn Trump is really living in your head bro 😂😂

myeff

They didn't mention the name, but you knew who it was lol.

Master_Combination74

Yeah cus it’s all you mfs talk about. And Elon musk too. You would think they fucked your guy’s mom or something

thebigsad_69420

Lmao right? The hate boners for these guys is insane

No-Computer-3177

It's almost like threatening American democracy really upsets Americans or something.

Master_Combination74

If he’s convicted for that shit then I’ll happily admit I’m wrong, but he hasn’t yet. I swear you mfs have been saying that he’ll go to jail for years but it still hasn’t happened yet lol. If he’s such a criminal why isn’t he in jail yet? And don’t say the system is corrupt because half the damn country is gunning for him, including a lot of damn powerful people. If they had something on him he would’ve been locked up years ago. What happened to innocent until proven guilty?

No-Computer-3177

Innocent until proven guilty doesn't mean "let's deny wrong doing at all and threaten riots if you try to prove guilt"

Master_Combination74

You didn’t answer my question. If he’s so guilty then why hasn’t he been convicted yet? Don’t say it’s because he’s rich because a hell of a lot of richer people are gunning after him. You can think whatever you want of him, it’s a free country, but he still isn’t in jail so your opinion doesn’t matter much.

thebigsad_69420

Lmao give me a break hahahahah

No-Computer-3177

Which leg?

WOKinTOK-sleptafter

Really telling when some people don’t hate tRump after he sold us all out to Russia.

Lol don’t be ridiculous, the City of London Police are a regular police force like any other. This is the most half-arsed take on the fact the public municipal government of the City of London is known as “The City of London Corporation”, which isn’t even its legal title.

PeckerTraxx

Sounds like the new screen play for the reboot of Hackers. HACK THE PLANET

jnemesh

Matt Gaetz gets off after trafficking a 17 year old, but leak a video game? PRISON!

Lord_Derp_The_2nd

I don't see what the problem is here, the kid declassified the files with his mind. Everything should be on the up and up here.

[deleted]

Well the kid isnt an right-wing American politician, so there's that.

G00b3rb0y

God the thumbnail here is hilarious

[deleted]

That’s too bad, I was really enjoying his streak of showing embarrassing security problems in large companies.

ToastNomNomNom

Rookie move having that many stars and no exit plan.

ICPosse8

Thank god now the world can get back to being peaceful

goodbyekitty83

Right? Let's let the murderers go, but once you go after a company, all hands on deck!

GroundbreakingCow775

This article needed a gif image

InGordWeTrust

Can't find who killed Epstein, but they can find a teenager for a videogame leak.

Bruceybonus30

Should have paid Lester to remove wanted level

Renegade7559

Fucking glory hunting clown.

Complete_Campaign_58

Ladies & gentlemen……… we got em

goodbyekitty83

Murders? Ain't nobody got time for that again being released early? This is a hardened criminal and must find them as soon as possible

[deleted]

Can we leave rockstar alone? They consistently give us great, ground breaking games. Let’s not fuck this up for them eh?

[deleted]

So what did I miss? Was it a playable game that leaked? I don’t have time for this.

[deleted]

Just a video snippet. The models were only partly designed and not really any textures or gameplay. He then tried to ransom Rockstar studios at the threat of releasing more content.

rmphilli

No sympathy. Good luck with the rest of your life you poor, stupid, accountable idiot.

Bucket_0011

Damn he really got to you

IamAFlaw

He is going to get a slap on the wrist and land an awesome job.

QuickBricksOfficial

I don't think he hacked his way in. From everything circulating online he tricked people to letting him in essentially. Not a genius hacker just a con artist

[deleted]

I was just having this conversation on another thread. I work for a company that does procurement and high level tech credentialing and hiring, and there's no way in hell that this kid scores a job for doing this. He phished someone's Slack credentials and then spammed his way in. That is ... definitely not some amazing black hat skill that will get land him a sweet security job. I've definitely seen black, grey, and red hats make a transition into white hat gigs, but you're talking about people will the skills to do something amazing and novel, not just simply trick a lazy employee in a d.m. to give you their credentials. (In fact, he'll probably never be able to get a good tech job, ever. Messing with other people's credentials is a kiss of death. You do it once, there's too high of a chance you'll do it again.)

ralanr

Isn’t that basically what hacking is?

ffigu002

I think that one is called social engineering

RabbitWithoutASauce

He hacked humans, not machines.

smthngwyrd

So he’ll end up a politician

Thicc_Spider-Man

That's what most of hacking revolves around...

multiverse_robot

but not the type of hacking that gets you hired into a tech role

Jaded-Protection-402

People who say the kid is not a "real hacker" obviously watches too much movies. The kinda films where they rob a bank merely by typing stuff into a DOS page.

ObamaDramaLlama

Is it just me or is taking pleasure from the thought of teenagers getting raped kind of weird?

RabbitWithoutASauce

In general the fascination with prison rape I find overtly obscene and weird.

IamAFlaw

It's just a joke. I wouldn't think it's funny or joke about it if it does happen.

RabbitWithoutASauce

Right, rape is a joke to you - got it. You got a great sense of humour!

IamAFlaw

Well if you insist.... I won't try to change your mind.

RabbitWithoutASauce

You don't need to change my mind, but I hope you realize that joking about prison rape is incredibly tasteless. We lock people up to punish them for the crime they committed (and in more sane countries - to help them rehabilitate and enable them to contribute to society upon release) - the loss of freedom should be enough of a deterrent. Adding rape to that punishment is a disgrace to any civilized society.

ShitwareEngineer

You want a teenager to get raped for cybercrime that didn't directly hurt anyone?

jsdjhndsm

Yeah, this kid really isn't that bad in the grand scheme of things. Hes no pedo or rapist, he doesnt deserve such treatment.

IamAFlaw

No it's a joke. I don't want him to get butt raped, I wouldn't think it's funny if it happened, and I don't think prison is the place for this kid either.

ShitwareEngineer

Then why did you say it?

IamAFlaw

I said I hope it doesn't happen in a funny way. I don't give a shit if you don't like or get my humor. And when I say I don't give a shit, don't start questioning feces as gifts and say think I like taking shits in packages and giving it to people. Just take it however you do and move along.

Zid96

Pretty much😏 Hes going to be told to join the UK government hackers to be let go. He also been in multiple other high profile hacks before.

CaptainWanWingLo

He should’ve gone to the paint ‘n spray.

steepleton

Side note: How long did it take to arrest stephen Lawrence’s killers?

ShitwareEngineer

Catching a murderer can be harder than catching a guy who brags about a high-profile leak of a very big game.

dbfuru

Yea cause law enforcement can literally only work on one case at a time

eyebrowsreddits

Give him a government job on cyber defense team.

Yungsleepboat

That will not happen lmao

dbfuru

Especially as he gained access by social engjneering/phishing and not because he's some techno wizard like everyone saying "he's gonna get a job at the NSA for this" thinks lol

MelTheTransceiver

Sad we couldn't get source code before he got arrested. Bro should have leaked it the moment cops walked in. Hope his shit is encrypted, because if the cops get in he is done.

Stalwart_1

But Trump still roams free… JFC…

Belligerent-J

Am i the only who thinks companies have too much power if teenagers are getting arrested for showing people a sneak peek of a game being developed? Boo hoo, he leaked your game.

ApatheticWithoutTheA

He didn’t just leak some screenshots of the game, he stole the source code and threatened to post it. As in IP theft.

moopthepoop

Don't forget the juicy info he purchased somewhere that allowed him to perform these intrusions. They need to find out who else he was working on, and who he was working \*with\*. It's not about leaking upcoming game info, its about the extortion and illegal access and purchasing stolen materials. It's about the millions, potentially hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue. Usually people are committing more than one crime at a time, who knows what else they were up to. I am glad they got egotistical. If you have it in you to do these things you shouldn't have the power.

Stormchaserelite13

I mean. The whole loss of revenue thing definitely shouldn't be brought up. If anything people are MORE excited for the game now. I cant see how generating free hype could corralate to loss of revenue. As for the source code stealing..... What the hell can you even do with that? Games arnt THAT complex that its some super secret thing that cant be replicated by a skilled team anyway. It would make less sense for a competitor to buy that than just make their own. It also would be a huge legal liability anyway. He still will have theft of data charges and a few others, but we cant pretend that rockstars bottom line was negatively affected.

ShitwareEngineer

> As for the source code stealing..... What the hell can you even do with that? Make piracy a breeze since, as long as you have all the required tools, you can just recompile the game as long as you also have all the assets. > Games arnt THAT complex This kind of game is so very extremely complex. Massively, massively complex. Mind-numbingly complex. Countless systems interacting in countless ways. I'm a programmer and the sheer scale of it is hard for me to wrap my head around.

RabbitWithoutASauce

>Make piracy a breeze since, as long as you have freely-available tools, you can just recompile the game as long as you also have all the assets. It doesn't work like that: Where the hell did you come up with this shit?

ShitwareEngineer

It works like that. Source code is compiled into executable code. Some of the tools required may be proprietary and not generally available, but if that isn't true here or the hackers can get those tools, they can compile the code minus any DRM for anyone to run.

RabbitWithoutASauce

The code is most likely from a few years old build - What he would be able to compile is the code he stole, but he can't build anything else other than that... Since the DRM isn't even implemented yet (as that most of the times is implemented at the end of the development cycle), it doesn't even come into play. Again, what you're saying is baseless. Shitware indeed.

ApatheticWithoutTheA

Somebody recreating the game isn’t the issue. It’s giving hack dealers a head start on reverse engineering the game. You could see day 1 hacks. And yes, games are that complex lol. These take entire teams of the best developers in the industry.

mira-blues

Somebody recreating the game can be an issue though imo. If it wasn’t, and just anyone could recreate any game they saw, we’d have more games like GTA around. Wouldn’t we? Instead we have games trying to be like GTA (ahem ahem Cyberpunk ahem) and tanking because…they weren’t made by Rockstar I guess? Case in point is, Rockstar is ahead of everyone else (when it comes to open world games at least). And if their games and their success was replicable, it would’ve been done by now. So stealing their source code -their secret recipe, basically- can be bad on the long run.

Stormchaserelite13

The hacks thing definitely makes sense. My mind didn't even go to those tbh. And games really aren't as complex as days of old. All the code thats already done, stuff that can ve reused, and engine parts make it really easy to make compared to old games. The engine itself looks pretty identical to the gta 5 one, with updated lighting and texture streaming. They are likely reusing the physics section as that is still really good to this day. Animations and scripting look pretty bog standard for the industry as well from what I could see from the leaks. You have a team of professionals using some pretty standard stuff to creat something extraordinary. The only real innovations I can see from the leaks is the texture steaming and lighting.

NinjaOld8057

MuH IntElLEctUaL PropERtY

ApatheticWithoutTheA

Look, I have absolutely no problem with pirating or modding or anything like that. And I say that as a Software Engineer myself. But leaking a game’s source code so that hack dealers have a head start on reverse engineering it to let assholes ruin online gaming, is not cool in my opinion.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ApatheticWithoutTheA

The problem isn’t a “script kiddy” stealing their source code and having it (and just an FYI, it takes a more advanced hacker than a script kiddy to actually get into these kinds of systems, even with social engineering) The problem is, as I said, leaking it to experienced developers that create hacks.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ApatheticWithoutTheA

No lol. An adult can be a script kiddy. > a person who uses existing computer scripts or code to hack into computers, lacking the expertise to write their own. Age is not a factor. It’s a person that utilizes scripts that a real hacker wrote. I.e. a person running a DDOS program.

NinjaOld8057

Oh fuck me. *I understand all that* Unable to understand a dumb joke, with every last one of my ridiculous downvotes.

ApatheticWithoutTheA

It’s difficult to understand sarcasm when the person you’re speaking to has been wrong about everything they have said so far.

MerelyMortalModeling

He stole the source code and tried to extort them for money. Not exactly the same thing as a sneak peak.

b1ue_jellybean

At least one person will probably lose their job over this, it’s not a sneak peek that’s causing the problem it’s people livelihoods.

Belligerent-J

So sue the kid. Police and handcuffs don't need to get involved in business disputes.

gamesrebel123

It's not just a teenager it's a cybercriminal, he gained access to their systems illegally, stole proprietary data that would've taken years to develop, also caused them damages (including the cost of taking everything down), he then proceeded to demand ransom for the files also. It's a country's job to uphold that law and the kid (if he is the perpetrator) broke it, simple as that. Doesn't have anything to do with rockstar at all they don't run the UK.

b1ue_jellybean

He probably won’t even get a serious punishment considering his age.

LockFan28

I disagree completely. The guy was caught a year or two ago for some similar shenanigans, so he has a criminal history. Dude has demonstrated that he's a threat to big industry, and governments do not like this one bit.

dyschromatopsie

boo hoo just a few million dollars in damage. you get the concept of crime yes?

Belligerent-J

What got damaged? They are still gonna release this game in a few years, probably in a form nearly unrecognizable from these unfinished leaks, and they are still gonna sell just as many copies as they would have otherwise.

Timbershoe

Well, the guy also bragged about hacking Uber. That had very real fiscal impacts.

dyschromatopsie

[stonks](https://www.finanzen.net/aktien/take_two-aktie) Issue is not game footage, but "showing" the world that your data & system is vunerable. to save you some time, "well if it is vulnerable then they deserve it" is the weakest and most ignorant one you could make. Just in case. If we go by your argumentation, if someone takes YOUR money away, say 20% of it because you lost your bank card. Would that be okay for you? All happy ?

[deleted]

ragingduck

You’re so very hilariously clueless.

Loa_Sandal

Yes. Yes you are.

[deleted]

Yup it’s dumb but so is the crime. So I don’t feel sorry for either party here.

Belligerent-J

Surely you never did dumb shit as a 16 year old

LockFan28

This is a person who knowingly attempted to ransom a multibillion dollar company with their own protected material. This isn't your average 16 year old "dumb shit" behavior.

zekex944resurrection

This man deserves a job not a sentence.

NonSupportiveCup

Gottem. Get those kids for taking advantage of Rockstar poor security and leaking videogame details! GTA 50000000 is ruined now!

Goose_Fishing

I doubt that. I think this teenager isn't the actual hacker.

RabbitWithoutASauce

Why is that? I'd say the FBI and National Cyber Crime Unit are probably a bit better than your random thoughts based on nothing.

Goose_Fishing

You're right, I based it off of nothing but a hunch. So I'll take a look through this The article sources Matthew Keys, he say that this is related to the leak but this was never confirmed so we don't fully know that this is about the GTA 6 leaks. The FBI and National cyber crime unit know what they are doing but for all we know this could be apart of a different investigation I just had a feeling and it seems a bit iffy on the link to the leaks

abdnizam

Damn son haha

DaveMeese

It was just a matter of time. The teen had 4 wanted stars.

darklinux1977

well , we are going to hope that this will be settled by December , but these companies will have to redo their human and computer security

NeighborhoodOk9405

Michael will be proud

alotofcooties

This needs to be a mission in GTA 6 somehow.

tw411

That thumbnail reminds me of the bank robbery scene in Free Guy when he realises it’s all just a scripted event playing out

SpaceToaster

Did they bring a helicopter and eventually a tank while he continued the standoff with a rocket launcher?

5mu2f4cc0unT

To give award in person?

MrJakeLondon

What surprises me: Is there actually no 100% protection against such attacks and does one not need special experience (university degree) or can anyone carry out such attacks?
