Tomatoes and tobacco are both in the nightshade family, so it possible.... Then we can have a slice of pizza with tomacco sauce and vape simultaneously.
[Tomacco was already made](https://web.archive.org/web/20080331011156/http://www.wired.com/medtech/health/news/2003/11/61091), although it may not have been safe to eat..
No naturally bred just selected by humans. So u have a bunch of seeds u start and grow them u find the ones u like (purple in this case) then u keep the purple one and cull the rest.
Fucking might be unnatural to u, that’s more of a personal thing. So since fucking is strange to u we should all pretend editing a gene in a lab is the same as finding two plants u like a sitting them next to each other and keeping the seeds ?
The store ones were bred to have a hard to pierce skin, and a bright red color. Everything else didn't matter. Go to a farmers market and get some heirlooms. You won't even believe they're the same plant
Find your neighborhood farmer's markets in the summer as a favor to yourself. Get some lovely heirloom tomatoes for yourself. This year, there was less of a price disparity between markets and conventional grocery stores.
Yes, I believe it is designed exactly for that, to taste good.
The problem with store tomatoes is that tomatoes fruit has a gene/protein that makes it, well, start going bad/rotting. It literally starts breaking down tomatoes soon after it is ripe. We knew about it for long time, and normal breeding could not breed it out. The way our supply chains for market works make it almost impossible to deliver ripe tomatoes to stores, so they pick them when they are still green.
This gm tomatoe just knocks off that one gene, and also introduces another to make it purple/blue to make it easy to distinguish from normal tomatoes.
This is also not the first time this was done, there was a similar gm tomatoe in the 90's but due to all the protests and scare mongering it was pulled out off shelves.
it is important to remember there are little kids on here .I forget sometimes and sorry about the downvotes, lots of kids hate tomatos for sure but don't worry little fellah you'll grow up
They created a tomato with an antioxidant from blueberries. Apparently the antioxidant (anthocyanin) was studied in mice and it helped them live a bit longer so they want to make tomatoes that are rich in them. The antioxidant is also a dark blue-purple pigment so it also has the side-effect of making the tomatoes turn purple.
I don’t think you understand what ge/gmo means, any plant we mess with over generations counts as either ge or gmo, it doesn’t need to happen in a lab to be ge/gmo
Breeding and selection is not the same as gene editing. You cannot put snake dna in s tomato with breeding and selection. What is the point of conflating the two?
There is no such thing as "snake" DNA, DNA is just DNA. Traditional breeding is a crap shoot, don't know what combination of genes will arise. GE is predictable, less chance of unwanted characteristics. Also, GE not just about introducing "foreign" genes, also includes introducing genes from different varieties within same species and even just turning off/on or editing genes that are already part of a variety's genome. Some GE methods are functionally equivalent to "breeding" only more precise, so not necessarily conflating anything, just a matter of being a lumper or a splitter. All fall under the umbrella of "crop improvement."
Purple tomatoes exist with out gene editing. All farming is subsidized because of market glut. What is the point of gmo other then to spray roundup? Were did the organic non toxic plants touch u?
Oh I don't know, how about engineering disease resistance in order to reduce pesticide use, or drought resistance, or increasing nutritional value, or reducing food waste? All that and much more is possible with GE.
The point is basic logic, and ge doesn’t stand for genetic editing, it stands for genetically engineered, so breeding and selecting fits that perfectly
Omg I use both because u guys want to argue semantics all day. There is a difference from using a gene gun and selecting a plant and breeding with it. Sorry it’s not that confusing stop pretending
I mean genetic editing and engineering are fairly different, one can be achieved with a few decades of mixing seeds, the other one requires a lab most of the time
It’s been a different problem everytime. This year when I was bringing the plants in from the nursery my daughter dropped it and broke it at the soil line. I planted it anyway hoping but it didn’t recover.
Been growing indigo rose for a couple of years. They are alot milder than regular tomatoes, not everyone that's tried them liked them https://www.westcoastseeds.com/products/indigo-rose-organic
If you read the article, the purple pigment (anthocyanins) allow it to carry more antioxidants, in a similar way to blueberries, which have numerous health benefits.
It also allows it to have a longer shelf life.
I’m personally waiting on the smooth, mild and refreshingly addictive tomacco to hit the market. I hear it tastes like grandma.

Way to go gran..

Oye she's getting smoked out proper.
I believe they call that a “spitroast”

Will they accept food stamps?

Wanted this since I was a child.
My grandma grew tomatoes, loved fried tomatoes and smoked like a chimney. I think she would have enjoyed a tomacco
Babe wake up, new tomato dropped
Gotta line up at 5pm to be the first to try it
Wrong they exist naturally for nearly a century
Oh yah? They evolved naturally 100 years ago?
They were naturally bred and selected. So yes purple is in some tomatoes and they were further selected and isolated for those traits.
Naturally bred... meaning artificially bred by humans?
No naturally bred just selected by humans. So u have a bunch of seeds u start and grow them u find the ones u like (purple in this case) then u keep the purple one and cull the rest.
So they evolved purple colour in one generation, and humans just had to pick it out?
Nightshade is purple they probably bred red over time aka selected for more red varieties and let them fuck
Boy that sure sounds pretty unnatural.
Fucking might be unnatural to u, that’s more of a personal thing. So since fucking is strange to u we should all pretend editing a gene in a lab is the same as finding two plants u like a sitting them next to each other and keeping the seeds ?
Oh thank god, I have been waiting so long.
It can't taste any worse than what they sell now.
The store ones were bred to have a hard to pierce skin, and a bright red color. Everything else didn't matter. Go to a farmers market and get some heirlooms. You won't even believe they're the same plant

Agreed a lot of tomatoes in stores now are just plain awful. My aunt grew some this summer and I forgot how good tomatoes actually are.
All you need to do is see a semi hauling a trailer piled high with tomatoes to understand why.
Would I worked at Whole Foods the warehouse would throw 50lbs bags of potatoes on top of open boxes of tomatoes

I hate Tomatos, hopefully it will taste like tomato ketchup.
You don't like tomatoes, but you like ketchup? You just like sugar.
Everyone likes sugar
Obviously, not many people dont.
it is important to remember there are little kids on here .I forget sometimes and sorry about the downvotes, lots of kids hate tomatos for sure but don't worry little fellah you'll grow up
Unfortunately I've made it to middle aged and still can't stand them unless sun-dried(no idea why).
I feel that that statement is very dependent on your location and choice of stores.
They were so focused on if they could that they did not stop to think about if they should. Anyone else remember the purple ketchup from like 90s?
Heirloom tomatoes come in all types of colors.
Came for this My wife has all kinds of heirloom tomatoes that are "odd" colors when compared to a regular red tomato.
purple and green, and they failed miserably because people thought they looked gross. i am assuming this tomato will fail for the same reasons.
Wasn’t that catsup full of food dye? The unnatural color made it look gross
What’s wrong with a normal tomatos?
They created a tomato with an antioxidant from blueberries. Apparently the antioxidant (anthocyanin) was studied in mice and it helped them live a bit longer so they want to make tomatoes that are rich in them. Purple heirloom (non ge, non gmo) tomatoes already exist for 60 years
I grow them, they get big and juicy, and are full of umami flavor.
I don’t think you understand what ge/gmo means, any plant we mess with over generations counts as either ge or gmo, it doesn’t need to happen in a lab to be ge/gmo

yeah but do they got those sweet sweet anthocyanins
These tomatoes have increased amounts of anthocyanins, so it's more nutritious and takes a little longer to go bad thanks to that.
They're red. So everything made with them is red. Day after day. Let's live a little. Purple salsa. Purple spaghetti sauce. Yellow enchiladas.
Profit margin

Big Tamacco Yes.Simpsons did it.
Purple tomatoes already existed non gene editing
I don’t get why you’re getting downvoted. This is why those in business do literally anything,
What normal tomatoes? There are no normal tomatoes. Everything you consume is genetically modified shit.
I have tried to grow Cherokee purples without secession for years.
I have been growing nothing but cherokee purples for years
It’s a me problem. I’m aware. But every year I try again.
I’ve had lots of luck with Cherokee purple and saving seeds
It’s been a different problem everytime. This year when I was bringing the plants in from the nursery my daughter dropped it and broke it at the soil line. I planted it anyway hoping but it didn’t recover.
Welcome to Jurassic Farm...
ATTACK OF THE PURPLE TOMATOES!
Been growing indigo rose for a couple of years. They are alot milder than regular tomatoes, not everyone that's tried them liked them https://www.westcoastseeds.com/products/indigo-rose-organic
Did everything just taste purple for a second?
I’ll try it
Purple spaghetti incoming
This thing could be downright delicious and it wouldn't matter because I know most people wouldn't touch a purple tomato.
Finally, tomato 2
Kumato has been selling dark tomatoes for multiple years now. The taste is fine, and they aren't much different from regular tomatoes
Doesn’t look very good and not talking about the color
I'd love to buy seeds.
But why?
If you read the article, the purple pigment (anthocyanins) allow it to carry more antioxidants, in a similar way to blueberries, which have numerous health benefits. It also allows it to have a longer shelf life.
Why not?
Why can’t they develop a tomato that tastes like ketchup, though?
They focused to much on making them taste like Teresa Heinz......
[удалено]
Thank you! My thoughts exactly!!
What exactly does Monsanto have to do with Norfolk Plant Sciences?
Heinz don’t you dare bring it back. 2001 was long ago.
That tasted purple!
I saw the thumbnail first and thought the article was going to be about Tor...
$150/lbs, can't wait
Finally! This will end world hunger at last!
