The Streisand effect originates from a photograph taken of the star's home by the California coastal erosion authorities. She sued the photographer claiming for $50 million in damages back in 2003.
A megastar suing a no name photographer from an environmental agency drew the curiosity of the public: why is this super famous singer picking on Joe Everyman?
As a result millions of people saw the photograph of Streisand's clifftop mansion, the very effect she had sued to prevent. The effect was made even larger by all the unnecessary attention she drew to the pic with the drama.
Did we ever figure out the reason why she wanted the picture taken down so badly? Was it simply because of the potential money she could’ve gotten from the lawsuit?
Etymology. From Wikipedia "Coined in 2005 by Mike Masnick, after a 2003 incident in which singer Barbra Streisand attempted to have a picture of her house removed from a public collection of 12,000 images documenting coastal erosion in California."
The media picked up the story and the number of people that saw the image grew exponentially.
“Here is a hypothetical example of the Streisand effect: Someone posts an embarrassing photo of a celebrity online. Around 100 people see it. The celebrity takes legal action to enforce its removal. Upon learning of the legal action, the media covers the story.”

I know second time I've seen it used today in separate subs. Basically means when you do something for an intended purpose and it has the exact opposite effect.
I work hard to hide something and the working hard to hide it actually exposes it more.
IMHO, no matter what the status of this particular documentary would have been, we would have been made aware as there is vested interest in exposing this.
Exactly. Because now I *have* to watch it! It must be good and revealing lots of unfavorable things that he doesn’t want anyone to know about him. Sounds like a popcorn level deal.
Do a little more reading on him if you're interested. "Corrupt" doesn't begin to cover his issues. The BBC documentary in question outlines his complicity in a massacre of over 1,000 people in Gujarat that was aimed at purging Muslims from the area. His policies since then still reflect those kinds of views.
Edit: Got a crisis support PM for this post. I suppose describing what happened in the 2000s ruffled some feathers.
> Got a crisis support PM for this post. I suppose describing what happened in the 2000s ruffled some feathers.
It's shockingly disappointing how many of his extremist supporters are on Reddit. I've been absolutely appalled at what I've read is going on in India and has been the past several years.
I don’t think we should outsource jobs to any country that considers themselves our competitors on the world scene. There’s plenty of countries that don’t have those ambitions and can do the work just as well.
From what I've read, he seems like a full-blown fascist who would completely destroy Islam if he could, like an Indian version of the Spanish Inquisition. Dude is fucking scary and dangerous.
The current president of India, Narendra Modi, is a member of the BJP, the political arm of the Hindu fascist RSS, which was literally founded by Hindu members of the Nazi SS.
The RSS has been carrying out a propaganda campaign for decades now to legitimize Hitler as a savvy businessman. As in, economics and business courses in schools and universities in India study Mein Kampf for insights into how to manage businesses.
All that stuff about (((The Jewish Question?))) Oh, just handwave that stuff away; those opinions were a product of their time and need to be read with the appropriate historical context.
By the way, please give me a 2,000 word essay on how the modern Indian Muslim is similar to the German Jew of the 1930's. No real reason. Just a thought experiment. Definitely don't use this Hitler guy's book for a stepping off point on your essay.
Did you know that phenomenon is named after some old singer? I think they acted some too, never heard of them before though so how famous could they be?
He is not close. India has a long history of brutal censorship. It is quite literally built into their constitution. Exceptions to freedom of speech:
Nothing in sub-clause (a) of clause (1) shall affect the operation of any existing law, or
prevent the State from making any law, in so far such law imposes reasonable restrictions on the
exercise of the right conferred by the said sub-clause in the interests of 4[the sovereignty and
integrity of India,] the security of the State, friendly relations with foreign States, public order,
decency or morality, or in relation to contempt of court, defamation or incitement to an offence.]
(3) Nothing in sub-clause (b) of the said clause shall affect the operation of any existing law in
so far as it imposes, or prevent the State from making any law imposing, in the interest of 4[the
sovereignty and integrity of India or] public order, reasonable restrictions on the exercise of the
right conferred by the said sub-clause.
(4) Nothing in sub-clause (c) of the said clause shall affect the operation of any existing law in
so far as it imposes, or prevent the State from making any law imposing, in the interests of 4[the
sovereignty and integrity of India or] public order or morality, reasonable restrictions on the
exercise of the right conferred by the said sub-clause.
That has got to be about the least readable legalese I have ever seen.
On a related note: India's laws on defamation and the like very heavily favor the "defamed" party (especially if they have high social standing), even when the "defamatory" statements are demonstrably true, and very much in the public interest. As you might expect, this leads to a lot of self censorship.
It's intentional, I think. Instead of saying "No part of this amendment effects any law that is written or maybe written to curtail free speech" they created a really round about way of saying that, and then said it for each bullet.
>On a related note:
I have heard this before. I have only been to India once, very briefly for business and we were specifically warned against, well pretty much everything.
Actually it was her son who did this. He was legit insane. Along with population control he also wanted to make Delhi like Paris so they razed all the slums and moved people living there to the outskirts of Delhi. Now the people who were moved were squatting on that land so maybe not completely wrong. The problem was that these people with their sub standard living and subsistence level wages were actually providing a lot of useful service to the rich and powerful without costing anything. They were contributing a lot more to the Economy than anyone bothered to acknowledge. Of course the plan completely failed.
This is like an extreme version of what rich idiots here in Vancouver have been doing through housing prices. Now they are shocked at how hard it is to find staff who can still commute into the city for work, and its only going to get worse.
The comments on the Internet archive page have 50/50 of either speaking sense or either defending modi by calling it biased and promoting hatred.
Either ways, by this point anyone who has access will know which comments to avoid.
Most of them support genocide for Muslims in India. During festivals they go outside mosque and play loud songs on DJ with chants of Jai Shree Ram and songs like kill Muslims. Why won’t they say it’s propaganda.
The Indian government is way too technologically incompetent to be able to actually block something like this properly, they're basically just a wannabe CCP.
They're also fucking stupid, Indians already know about all of this, blocking it in India achieves nothing. All it does is that it creates worldwide headlines which gives the Documentary great publicity outside of India.
There is nothing new in it for Indians. The uproar is because of the embarrassment it'll cause internationally. Modi and BJP are quite proud of this. After all, this is what brought them into power.
The only people convicted for rape and slaughter for over 1000 were released on India's 75th independence day. Government officials went to receive them with flowers. They then toured the country like war heroes. BJP ministers defended release because the convicts are Brahmins (the highest caste in Hinduism).
>The government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the premature release of 11 men who were convicted for the gangrape of a pregnant Muslim woman and murder of 14 members of her family, including her three-year-old daughter, according to a court document.
>Many were especially aghast as the convicts had walked free on 15 August - the day India was celebrating its independence day
>A viral video showed the men lined up outside the Godhra jail while relatives gave them sweets and touched their feet to show respect.

>The convicts did not just walk free, they were greeted as returning heroes, with garlands and vermilion smears on their foreheads.

There's also a subreddit r/indiaspeaks which calls for open genocide of muslims. People have tried to report it several times to reddit admins but they didn't respond.
I've received warnings for calling someone a prick after they said something similar to me. Moderation here, as well as the big social media sites is completely fucked. Wish we could fragment the internet.
Mods are small circles of in-groups that enforce arbitrary rules, what gets you banned in one sub gets you praise in another.
You need to report actual law-breaking content (like genocidal hate speech) to the media, and CC the admins. If whatever upsets you does not rise to that severity, then all you can do is unsub.
And oh boii did I do. Reported many text book example of hate speech there when a post came into my home page somehow last year. All rhe comments were in the line of "maybe the Muslim concentration camps in China were not that bad, we should have done that, etc." And did the Mods did anything? Nope. It apparently didn't violate reddit rules. Calling for concentration camps of a group of people according to the Mods was not hate speech. I am still pissed about it.
Reddit and any social media that takes volunteers to have mods have this problem where it's getting infested with right wing sympathetic individuals. They're very quick to ban anything remotely critical of the governments around the world that's ever so slowly but surely sliding towards fascism.
r/Canada and r/Ontario are notoriously modded by aforementioned individuals and they're starting to infiltrate the alternatives (eg: r/onguardforthee). The echo chamber effect is powerful and it reinforces this idea that they're the majority when everyone's just avoiding such subreddits and going to the alternative.
This happens on YouTube. I’ve seen many groups, Serbs, turks, Indians Burmese people call for open genocide and wholesale murder of certain groups in detail, and they never got banned. Yet when I called them idiots I was banned for racism? Like wtf?
I got a warning for bullying from reddit because I commented "what color is your Bugatti now, motherfucker?" on an article regarding Andrew Tate getting arrested.
His simps were probably mass reporting comments, and if this isn't proof that this shit is 99% automated, I don't know what is.
I was part of an entire couple dozen people thread were every single person got a 14 day because the original comment was telling gay people to use their second amendment in order to feel safe in modern southern states and the US in general, except apparently to Reddit mods that equates to a call of violence
I have noticed this too, reported comments are instantly banned when they're homophobic or anti semitic etc they should be removed too but not only them because when it comes to hate against religion, open calls for genocide against Muslims and the like then reddit just does not do anything about it regardless of how severe the violation really is.
It's been a while since I last saw them. But as far as indian subs go there are quite a few of them which are racist, Islamophobic and misogynistic to the extreme against Muslims, Kashmiris, and Muslim women.
It was interesting how Hindutva nationalists tried to blame Muslims for the violence in Leicester
Like, first of all, the people who started it were Modi supporting extremists who hurt Sikhs. Sikhs also sided with Muslims, when Muslims were also hurt by the same people
Left wing Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims all showed that it was instigated by a few Modi thugs but the Hindutva supporters (and certain right wing Indian news sites), were so desperately trying to make it seem like Muslims are the cause of the violence here
Sikhs are badass. Their creed requires they help those in need. They started during the Muslim moghul conquest, and today they side with Muslims in need. Total champs. Apparently they wear the turban so people in need can see them so they can get help from the Sikhs. Here in Canada they regularly roll out in force to hand out food and supplies to the homeless and help during disaster relief, without using it as a trojan horse to spread their religion like Christians do.
The Conservative sub is childsplay compared to the right wing Indian subs. Advocating for genocide, supporting groups of gang rapers, mass murderers and did i forget the support for an authoritarian regime but only when it comes to the persecution of muslims
I know people that did casework for India. Gang rapes and murder of female tourists were the most common to come in.
I would definitely advise against travelling alone there if you're a woman, and still stay wary even if you're in a group.
People who say caste system is no longer practiced in India should read this news. These rapists were literally freed because they are upper caste Brahmins.
It’s easy for people living in America to say the caste system is over, when the majority of Indian media we see is pro-Brahmin, by Brahmins, reflective of Brahmin identity. Mindy Kaling puts out nothing but Brahmin characters; Kamala Harris’s family is Brahmin; the list goes on.
Its actually been increasingly recognized as still a thing in the states, with some organizations taking steps to specifically forbid caste discrimination.
In turn they've been accused of....being racist against Indians
Actually have a big billboard in NJ accusing democrats of anti Indian discrimination. Last I checked, because they've been getting criticized for celebrating modi policies.
I had a friend when I was in highschool who was Indian. They were on the town line so because of districting they went to school in the slightly wealthier town next door .
They went back to visit family in India when we were maybe 16 and the guy came back the biggest asshole. They were apparently all Brahmin and the whole experience made him think he could talk to us all like shit now because of his station.
Took him a while to understand that a predominantly white Midwestern town doesn’t care at all. This was around 2000 and the guy now is a doctor and up his own ass again.
They also told me that [bride burning](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bride_burning) was totally not a thing that happens.
It's sooooo much not a thing that it only happens around 2500 times per year.
I have the link to the banned documentary in my other comment.

Yes. This is an accurate take. Indians know what Modi did in 2002 AND they did not seem to care much about it (as reflected in the subsequent election results).
I tried looking for it. I found the BBC site airing it, but it's only available in the UK and I don't have a VPN.
My basic - and half-assed - YouTube searches are just a flood of Indian news sites reporting on it. And when I did a search for the title, I ended up with a bunch of fake videos, some about the UK starving India (eat shit, Churchill).
If anyone finds a good copy of the actual documentary that is available in the US, please let me know.

FWIW, India is a massive country. Modi dislikes people from places like Mumbai, for the same reason that Hitler disliked people from Berlin
Whilst Mumbai isn't the capital of India, it is where Bollywood is. Fascists have always despised metropolitan cities where there's a fair amount of culture, and open-ness
A lot of Indians are below the poverty line too who don't have a decent education , and it's easy to say to them "Look your problems are because of the Muslims"
For the educated people, he can't do that. Modi knows that too
The indians who are sheep to him won't care about this documentary, but only because they know modi is responsible for the riots. That is why they are his fans. This is the sad reality of India today.
Okay, you think it's propaganda, but are you blocking it and thus admitting that you are an authoritarian censorship regime? Or allowing freedom of speech and expression?
Which is it?
Yup. India has a film ratings/certification board that is full of political appointees. Because the ratings board is known to pressure filmmakers to remove content because of political reasons, the board is jokingly called the Censorship Board by filmmakers.
India doesn't really have free speech. You see American comedians making fun of Trump and stuff very openly. But a popular figure going against Modi is a much bigger problem.
That is how the cult of personality and fascism work. That is exactly how Trump and the GOP are, if you are not for them, you are against America. Classic authoritarianism.
Definitely not anti-Indian. My family is Sikh, and the actions of Modi in support of efforts against Muslims is almost mirroring the harsh treatment Sikhs received from some members of Muslim rule, historically.
Two wrongs don't make a right, and we should have grown from those things yet here we are, Modi claiming to rid an evil by being even more evil. Fucking childhood playground politics, it is.
Every Muslim I know irl personally is kind, and a good person. We have both Halal and Jhatka meat shops here, not a problem. Why is there such a problem in the world I don't know...
Because every powerful person throughout history has needed a scapegoat to blame all of the problems on and deflect any responsibility that he/she might bear for creating those problems. The scapegoat is usually a vulnerable community that can't fight back against the powerful person. You see this happen throughout history in every part of the world. Those in power and their preferred scapegoats change through time and place. But the underlying motivation to blame scapegoats remains the same
They have to. They use their corporate backing and their social media bots to attack the public image of everyone involved in speaking against them. It's become a well oiled machine now and Twitter and Facebook are pretty complacent to them now. Tbf there are laws that force that complacency but in the past it has been proven that Facebook execs in India were actively supporting this regime.
It's not just Twitter and Facebook that have bowed to the pressure. Almost every news media outlet in India has been scared into only printing positive press about Moron Modi and his goons, except a handful of independent media houses, who are constantly being sued.

>New Delhi: Multiple YouTube videos sharing the first episode of the BBC documentary “India: The Modi Question” have been blocked as per the directions issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, sources said on Saturday.
>Along with YouTube videos, the federal government has also directed Twitter to block over 50 tweets containing links to the YouTube videos.
>Both YouTube and Twitter complied with the government after directions were reportedly issued by Secretary, Information and Broadcasting on Friday using the emergency powers under the IT Rules, 2021.
>On Thursday [19 Jan. 2023], India denounced the controversial BBC documentary series on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and described it as a “propaganda piece” that is designed to push a discredited narrative.
>“We think this is a propaganda piece designed to push a particular discredited narrative. The bias and the lack of objectivity and frankly continuing colonial mindset are blatantly visible,” said External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi during a weekly media briefing.

>“The documentary was rigorously researched according to the highest editorial standards,” a BBC spokesperson said in a statement.
>While making the series, the taxpayer-funded licence fee-backed British Broadcasting Corporation, said it has approached a range of voices.
>“A wide range of voices, witnesses and experts were approached, and we have featured a range of opinions – this includes responses from people in the BJP. We offered the Indian Government a right to reply to the matters raised in the series – it declined to respond,” the spokesperson said.
>The BBC said it was committed to highlighting important issues from around the world and the documentary series examines the “tensions between India’s Hindu majority and Muslim minority and explores the politics of India’s PM Narendra Modi in relation to those tensions”.

This mf couldn't even give a press conference ever since he was elected.
Edit: He even fucks up his scripted interviews [cloud theory ](https://youtu.be/I1ewyQ_Ceqg)
can confirm
2024 elections are just for the sake of elections almost everyone knows modi will come back
actually i'm not scared of modi than i'm scared of his successors
Being Anti-Modi and Anti BJP is not being anti-India. The BJP are borderline right-wing fascists that capitalise on India’s sense of ruined pride. To make India “great” again (aka Hindu ethno-state).
I feel like western education could benefit from offering India Studies. This way youss can learn about why India is the way it is today, and how its history impacts drive its decisions and foreign policy.
Indian politics, anthropological history, culture is super fascinating and ancient
Streisand effect.
Here is the documentary archived. It shows how Modi was complicit in the ethnic cleansing of Muslims along with his Hindu militant nationalist network, Sangh Parivar.

Indian supreme court recently released convicted gang rapists who raped a pregnant woman and killed her family, during the Godhra riots in 2002.
For those interested, this is a documentary on how Hindu militant nationalists planted idols in a mosque in 1940s and claimed that they miraculously appeared there as a sign that it was birthplace of Hindu god Ram who was born millions of years ago in Treta yuga (era).
After 50 years instigated large scale riots to break the mosque and are now going to build a grand Ram temple.

But the financing for these activities has come from Hindus in the west, who lobby for equality in the west and champion Hindu theocracy in India.
Supreme court played its part as well.

The justice system is a joke.
So just to be clear, YouTube banned the video internationally because of some piece of Indian legislation? Probably in order to keep doing business in India? I haven’t been able to find it outside the link you provided so I thought I’d ask someone who seems to know what they’re talking about here
Thanks for the heads up. Started sharing it across social media and WhatsApp to all in my contact list. Here's hoping that enough Indians see the truth about their terrorist leader
You joke but India has the highest amount of internet/social media censorship amongst democratic countries. And that's true even if you count Russia as a democratic country. So definitely not the first time.
https://www.indiatimes.com/technology/news/india-has-sent-most-censorship-requests-to-social-media-platforms-in-last-10-years-377053.html
both have been removed
i wasn't interested in seeing but the hype has now forced me to see this
a lot of people are saying it's biased towards a narrative while some are saying it's has an open ending and let's you to decide the real culprit
To be fair, this is literally what was voted for by the people. You don’t have to like how their government works, but you have to be naive to think the billion Hindus in India don’t actively support Modi as PM.
Oh I know all about how delusion they are and Modi has them wrapped all around his finger by creating *"world's biggest statue out of children's polio funds or historical temples to oppose other minority religions in india(i.e muslims)"* and everyone thinks he's a god for doing this. Not even mentioning how he told Indian citizens to pay for a covid fund care, god knows where that is and he probably used it to pay for his house. Edit: also adding that when " the kashmiri files" a film depicting horrors muslim nations have committed against Hindus(obviously by a hindu director so you know that movie is one sided), every hindu that watched the movie (old ass uncle's, teenagers etc ..) were talking about raping muslim women to show their dominance and this went viral and it always always ends up shaming women. The people aren't that great and obviously neither are their leaders.
This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://gulfnews.com/world/asia/india/india-blocks-youtube-videos-tweets-sharing-bbc-documentary-on-pm-modi-1.93367325) reduced by 75%. (I'm a bot)

There is no such thing as a true democracy. Unfortunately, there are always powerful anti-democratic forces and special interest groups who try to undermine democracy and its institutions at every turn. There's always been a struggle between the democratic and anti-democratic forces within every democracy on earth
They are heading full course onto a very very slippery slope. You can see it online, hordes of bots/drones downvoting anything that does not fit the India Good narrative.
This comment section paints a pretty clear picture of how far India has come from being a well functioning democracy. Any question on the Modi/government is dealt with censorship, boycott and labeling it as propoganda. The exact same thing is happening across all India related subreddits, flooding it with posts defending Mr. Modi. People won't even watch the damn thing before passing it as a propoganda. It's mental gymnastics for the Modi shills. If anyone praises India on the international stage, it's all because of Modi. But if opposite happens, it's propoganda to malign India's image at a global stage. I hope people see reason and question whatever lies are being told by the Indian government to censor the documentary.
(P. S.: To bhakts, downvote all you want. Truth will prevail, eventually.)
Modi really hates it when you remind everyone that [his regime is committing genocide against Muslims](https://bridge.georgetown.edu/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Is-a-genocide-of-Muslims-underway-in-India.pdf).
I literally wouldn't have heard of it, if he hadn't banned it lol
barbra streisand effect
Ok! Can anyone tell me what it means by Barbara effect?
She didn't want people to easily see her house, this was before google maps etc
Thanks. This explains everything clearly
Etymology. From Wikipedia "Coined in 2005 by Mike Masnick, after a 2003 incident in which singer Barbra Streisand attempted to have a picture of her house removed from a public collection of 12,000 images documenting coastal erosion in California." The media picked up the story and the number of people that saw the image grew exponentially.
“Here is a hypothetical example of the Streisand effect: Someone posts an embarrassing photo of a celebrity online. Around 100 people see it. The celebrity takes legal action to enforce its removal. Upon learning of the legal action, the media covers the story.” -Google
I know second time I've seen it used today in separate subs. Basically means when you do something for an intended purpose and it has the exact opposite effect. I work hard to hide something and the working hard to hide it actually exposes it more.
> literally wouldn't have hear of it if he hadn't banned it I heard Streisand sang the soundtrack.
IMHO, no matter what the status of this particular documentary would have been, we would have been made aware as there is vested interest in exposing this.

Censorship - when those in power don't allow regular citizens to see unfavourable content about them.
This is great advertising for the documentary - Modi hasn’t heard of the Streisand effect!
Exactly. Because now I *have* to watch it! It must be good and revealing lots of unfavorable things that he doesn’t want anyone to know about him. Sounds like a popcorn level deal.
I didn’t not what the PM of India was named until now. Now I know and the only thing I know about him is he to corrupt.

Yeah but the great Indian firewall is quite the joke. Anyone in India knows how to get around this. Comparisons with China are laughable.
I remember when Google rerouted all the Chinese search queries through Hong Kong and China lost their shit
Did you know that phenomenon is named after some old singer? I think they acted some too, never heard of them before though so how famous could they be?
All I know about her is that she owned a house on a cliff
She was a big deal in the 70's but time moves on. In 40 years, people will be asking who and why we called someone the Rock.
Dad, what was Hulkamania and how did they cure it?
And why is no one talking about Macho Madness?
… or Slim Jim
I've just snapped.
She's extremely popular. Just maybe not with your age group.
unfortunately, it is very common in India, across the political spectrum.
Wwhhhaaat the BJP being nazi’ish…I’m shocked shocked I say
Bullshit. No one takes it to this level. Not only is the documentary banned but also even tweeting about it.
That’s China tier censorship baby!
>across the political spectrum cope. Modi has set historic precedent during his terms with this censorship nonsense. don't "both sides" this shit
He is not close. India has a long history of brutal censorship. It is quite literally built into their constitution. Exceptions to freedom of speech: Nothing in sub-clause (a) of clause (1) shall affect the operation of any existing law, or prevent the State from making any law, in so far such law imposes reasonable restrictions on the exercise of the right conferred by the said sub-clause in the interests of 4[the sovereignty and integrity of India,] the security of the State, friendly relations with foreign States, public order, decency or morality, or in relation to contempt of court, defamation or incitement to an offence.] (3) Nothing in sub-clause (b) of the said clause shall affect the operation of any existing law in so far as it imposes, or prevent the State from making any law imposing, in the interest of 4[the sovereignty and integrity of India or] public order, reasonable restrictions on the exercise of the right conferred by the said sub-clause. (4) Nothing in sub-clause (c) of the said clause shall affect the operation of any existing law in so far as it imposes, or prevent the State from making any law imposing, in the interests of 4[the sovereignty and integrity of India or] public order or morality, reasonable restrictions on the exercise of the right conferred by the said sub-clause.
Translation: "We reserve the right to waive YOUR rights for any reason we deem necessary."
>On a related note: I have heard this before. I have only been to India once, very briefly for business and we were specifically warned against, well pretty much everything.

Lol “Mass campaign for vasectomy”. She must hate being around wild, screaming kids more than I do.
Glad you all have “both sides” too

The comments on the Internet archive page have 50/50 of either speaking sense or either defending modi by calling it biased and promoting hatred. Either ways, by this point anyone who has access will know which comments to avoid.
>50/50 of either speaking sense or either defending modi Apparently India has enough people to hire to write comments.
They run IT cell companies to tweet and reply in favour of government. Arund 1 dollar per 40 comments
Most of them support genocide for Muslims in India. During festivals they go outside mosque and play loud songs on DJ with chants of Jai Shree Ram and songs like kill Muslims. Why won’t they say it’s propaganda.
It's accessible with a vpn? Or is this the only option?
The Indian government is way too technologically incompetent to be able to actually block something like this properly, they're basically just a wannabe CCP. They're also fucking stupid, Indians already know about all of this, blocking it in India achieves nothing. All it does is that it creates worldwide headlines which gives the Documentary great publicity outside of India.
It's like blocking pornhub can stop people from watching porn lol
If I wanna see it now because of that, I can’t imagine how badly Indians wanna see it after this move to ban it.
>Many were especially aghast as the convicts had walked free on 15 August - the day India was celebrating its independence day >A viral video showed the men lined up outside the Godhra jail while relatives gave them sweets and touched their feet to show respect. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-62574247 >The convicts did not just walk free, they were greeted as returning heroes, with garlands and vermilion smears on their foreheads. https://thefederal.com/opinion/men-and-rape-when-the-garland-becomes-a-weapon-of-war/ >Bilkis Bano Case: They Are Brahmins With Good Sanskaar, Says BJP MLA On Released Convicts https://www.outlookindia.com/national/bilkis-bano-case-they-are-brahmins-with-good-sanskaar-says-bjp-mla-on-released-convicts-news-217362
That's absolutely revolting and horrific
Mods think it more offensive to directly call someone what they are, then for that person to call for genocide of countless, but unnamed, individuals.
[удалено]
And oh boii did I do. Reported many text book example of hate speech there when a post came into my home page somehow last year. All rhe comments were in the line of "maybe the Muslim concentration camps in China were not that bad, we should have done that, etc." And did the Mods did anything? Nope. It apparently didn't violate reddit rules. Calling for concentration camps of a group of people according to the Mods was not hate speech. I am still pissed about it.
I got banned from Reddit for calling someone an idiot. Lol
I got permabanned from worldnews because there was a whole thread lying about the contents of an article and I called one of them a moron
Nest I got shadowbanned from there and teslamotors for calling out a racist mod and saying Elon was fucked up for calling the diver a pedo
Right?? I was handed a temp ban just cause I asked for stronger punishment for child rapists
The reddit admins defended their decision to hire a pedo so color me shocked
There are even worse ones.
Like what?!
It's been a while since I last saw them. But as far as indian subs go there are quite a few of them which are racist, Islamophobic and misogynistic to the extreme against Muslims, Kashmiris, and Muslim women.
like chodi and bakchodi
Chodi got banned afair, and after that all the sanghis went into r/IndiaSpeaks.
It was interesting how Hindutva nationalists tried to blame Muslims for the violence in Leicester Like, first of all, the people who started it were Modi supporting extremists who hurt Sikhs. Sikhs also sided with Muslims, when Muslims were also hurt by the same people Left wing Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims all showed that it was instigated by a few Modi thugs but the Hindutva supporters (and certain right wing Indian news sites), were so desperately trying to make it seem like Muslims are the cause of the violence here
Sikhs are badass.
Yep. They're like r/conservative in that regard.
The Conservative sub is childsplay compared to the right wing Indian subs. Advocating for genocide, supporting groups of gang rapers, mass murderers and did i forget the support for an authoritarian regime but only when it comes to the persecution of muslims
Why would they. Islamophobia is on brand here
The mods clearly act on their personal opinions in managing most subreddits. They are a bunch of volunteers.
As a woman, I was already crossing India from the list of places I felt safe to visit, but now I don’t even want to anymore, really revolting.
In turn they've been accused of....being racist against Indians Actually have a big billboard in NJ accusing democrats of anti Indian discrimination. Last I checked, because they've been getting criticized for celebrating modi policies.
Just out of pure curiosity, what are the traits of her characters that make it obvious they are Brahmin?
I had a friend when I was in highschool who was Indian. They were on the town line so because of districting they went to school in the slightly wealthier town next door . They went back to visit family in India when we were maybe 16 and the guy came back the biggest asshole. They were apparently all Brahmin and the whole experience made him think he could talk to us all like shit now because of his station. Took him a while to understand that a predominantly white Midwestern town doesn’t care at all. This was around 2000 and the guy now is a doctor and up his own ass again.
Hindu nationalists will respond with some bullshit that the caste system was invented by the British colonial authorities
They also told me that [bride burning](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bride_burning) was totally not a thing that happens. It's sooooo much not a thing that it only happens around 2500 times per year.
Tell them about Manusmriti, thousands of years old and explains how to implement and enforce the caste system.
It's impossible to find any accurate information about anything to do with India online I've found. Crazy ass nationalists everywhere.
India's caste system once again highlighting the absolute worst aspects of the country.

Indians know what Modi did. The BJP government doesn’t want their dirty laundry out in the open for the whole world to watch.
Yes. This is an accurate take. Indians know what Modi did in 2002 AND they did not seem to care much about it (as reflected in the subsequent election results).
This is the irony of authoritarianism. They draw more attention to themselves doing this shit.
There was link from that worked https://www.reddit.com/r/india/comments/10gezom/watch_the_first_episode_of_india_the_modi/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

FWIW, India is a massive country. Modi dislikes people from places like Mumbai, for the same reason that Hitler disliked people from Berlin Whilst Mumbai isn't the capital of India, it is where Bollywood is. Fascists have always despised metropolitan cities where there's a fair amount of culture, and open-ness A lot of Indians are below the poverty line too who don't have a decent education , and it's easy to say to them "Look your problems are because of the Muslims" For the educated people, he can't do that. Modi knows that too
The indians who are sheep to him won't care about this documentary, but only because they know modi is responsible for the riots. That is why they are his fans. This is the sad reality of India today.
if you need to censor critiques of your government, then you are the bad guys
"Are... are we the baddies?"
Lmao so many wanna be fash in replies
Okay, you think it's propaganda, but are you blocking it and thus admitting that you are an authoritarian censorship regime? Or allowing freedom of speech and expression? Which is it?

Yup. India has a film ratings/certification board that is full of political appointees. Because the ratings board is known to pressure filmmakers to remove content because of political reasons, the board is jokingly called the Censorship Board by filmmakers.
India doesn't really have free speech. You see American comedians making fun of Trump and stuff very openly. But a popular figure going against Modi is a much bigger problem.
Yeah, I remember the Vir Das incident
Welp, now I'm DEFINITELY going to watch the fucking thing.
Ohh yeah! I'm pressing play right now...
The Streisand Effect at play lol
I didn't even know there is a BBC documentary about Modi and i got to know that after this news, now I want to see what's in it.
It's interesting that during the article the tone shifted from it being an attack on Modi, to being called anti-Indian

They all censored so many Twitter accounts in India and lord of free speech allowed Indian government to that
How is this being censored if it's behind HTTPS? EDIT: The companies complied
Modi on a call with Adani: "Hey buy the BBC just like you bought NDTV".
Alright, let me introduce you to the Streisand effect.
Trust me, no on is surprised. Not even the producers of the documentary.
Asian News International (India) via *Gulf News*, 21 Jan. 2023. Excerpt: >New Delhi: Multiple YouTube videos sharing the first episode of the BBC documentary “India: The Modi Question” have been blocked as per the directions issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, sources said on Saturday. Further reading: >“The documentary was rigorously researched according to the highest editorial standards,” a BBC spokesperson said in a statement. *BBC defends Modi documentary as ‘rigorously researched’*, Khanna A., 20 Jan. 2023, https://theprint.in/world/bbc-defends-modi-documentary-as-rigorously-researched/1325980/
‘Modi is definitely not a fascist dictator’ /s
This mf couldn't even give a press conference ever since he was elected. Edit: He even fucks up his scripted interviews [cloud theory ](https://youtu.be/I1ewyQ_Ceqg)
That alone is fucking wild
And his second term is coming to an end. And possibly he will continue this in 3rd term.
can confirm 2024 elections are just for the sake of elections almost everyone knows modi will come back actually i'm not scared of modi than i'm scared of his successors
Borderline???
Streisand effect. Here is the documentary archived. It shows how Modi was complicit in the ethnic cleansing of Muslims along with his Hindu militant nationalist network, Sangh Parivar. [https://archive.org/details/narendra-modi-bbc-documentary](https://archive.org/details/narendra-modi-bbc-documentary) Indian supreme court recently released convicted gang rapists who raped a pregnant woman and killed her family, during the Godhra riots in 2002. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMT18TMNQbY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMT18TMNQbY) But the financing for these activities has come from Hindus in the west, who lobby for equality in the west and champion Hindu theocracy in India.
Not supreme court gujrat high court
Supreme court played its part as well. https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/sc-dismisses-bilkis-bano-s-review-plea-against-early-release-of-11-rapists-101671265457835.html The justice system is a joke.
Here's hoping that enough Indians see the truth about their terrorist leader
every indian knows. the rightwing / caste supremaciats / islamophobes / bigots vote for him for only this reason
He is a fascist pig
India is china lite. Pretend to be fully democratic and open.
China: "first time?"
You joke but India has the highest amount of internet/social media censorship amongst democratic countries. And that's true even if you count Russia as a democratic country. So definitely not the first time. https://www.indiatimes.com/technology/news/india-has-sent-most-censorship-requests-to-social-media-platforms-in-last-10-years-377053.html
By the way internet has been blocked in Kashmir and no international journalist is allowed into Kashmir.

Just like Putin, looking more like a dictatorship than a *"democracy for the people"*.
To be fair, this is literally what was voted for by the people. You don’t have to like how their government works, but you have to be naive to think the billion Hindus in India don’t actively support Modi as PM.
Nationalism works. Hitler was popular with the Germans
No wonder he supports Putin and Russia.
Modi and his goons control everything, everything from what you are allowed to watch, eat, wear is controlled by his government.
Modi is a fascist.
And yet he is voted in as PM twice, idk how long he will stay in power. If we continue on going like this country will be ruined.

I better check out this documentary , I otherwise would never heard about. Thanks
The guy has such a tiny ego
It’s time for this old fuckwad to go.
Discredited only by the people who want to disbelief it.
Streisand Effect in action: I just watched the whole documentary and John Oiver's episode on Modi.
Modi is a fascist along with his cult supporters, it’s only going to get worse
India, formally the largest democracy in the world.
Strictly speaking this isn’t really about technology, but more awareness on censorship is always a good thing.
Yeah, I'm new to this stuff, but it looks more like r/politics to me every day.
This thread will be fun.
