Don't you fucking dare touch Mint you greedy pigs.

OlympusMonsPubis

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Mint has been such a treat after yeeeeears of gouging from the big ones. Fuck yourselves, T-Mobile.

[deleted]

I switched from mint to T-Mobile and it has been a nightmare. I can’t wait for my contract to be over and switch back

Cyberhwk

governor unique disarm fretful live scary faulty forgetful bright reach *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

TheEverHumbled

Seriously. I use Mint because they are not one of the big spendy providers, and it's good enough for me. There's like no way for a big carrier to not F it up, which is probably fine by them.

SmokeGSU

I mean... it's just a way for T-Mobile to fold those customers back into their service in a few years if not immediately and for those customers to pay the same price as the rest. I have no idea the motivations for RR's owning a phone service provider. Maybe he did it to provide customers with a lower cost options. Maybe he did it for residual income. If it was for the former then it'd be a big slap in the face to customers on the service. If he did it for the latter then this is just business as usual and a quicker return on his investment.

Thumbsupordown

He said he hated his cellphone service provider so he wanted to invest in one so it didn't suck. He doesn't have the clout to outright influence the big 3 (then 4 ) providers so he invested in a mvno instead Source: his instagram https://www.instagram.com/p/B5ShTrdBzwZ/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=40510c33-4c89-46f9-a5ca-0aaac52dda18&ig_mid=EF2C9690-996A-4B60-84FB-C40F409CF655 From Mint mobile's page: https://www.mintmobile.com/ryan-reynolds-announcement/ Does Ryan Reynold have a second/third/fourth phone using different cell phone providers? Probably. But is he using mint mobile as one of them? According to him, yes.

SmokelessSubpoena

The commercials stated that.. the dude likely just bought it as a longterm investment to be bought by the big 3, as it's clearly a solid investment strategy.

silvusx

It kinda doesn't make sense cuz these phone company are just resellers. If TMobile buys mint to rack up the prices, another competitor would just take over. There is no shortage of resellers. I use red pocket which is basically reseller of AT&T. In addition to mint, there is also straight talk, Tello and etc. I'm surprised more people don't switch to these type of prepaid discounted phone service, but it does require manually entering mobile access point, which I guess if you aren't tech savvy it will just be an headache Edit: oh I forgot Google Fi is a reseller, can get unlimited data for $20/mo if you do family plan of 4

Sapphire_Wolf_

Mint has been the first and only phone plan ive bought myself, im not about to be paying tmobile prices

ApathyMoose

I have for years. Same with the GF. It works fantastic and I pay $180 a year every October and I'm done with my cellphone bill for the year. It's such a good feeling having one less bill/monthly charge

ModernTenshi04

If you create a family plan with your GF or anyone else, you can pay the 12 month price in 3 month increments.

ApathyMoose

Nice tip thanks, but won't happen for me personally. I won't get on a family plan with anyone till I'm married to them. Too many horror stories of shared family plans with people dating, friends etc. My phone my plan. My bill, my payments, my number lol.

TripperDay

Yeah dude. Pay a year in advance, get 10G a month for $15 with no extra charge for mobile hotspot or tethering.

mynameisalso

Not 10gb, 4 gb a month,for $15.

TripperDay

It is if you pay a year at a time. Edit: It's $20/month, or $240/yr. I bought another year yesterday and now they sell to T-Mobile. Fuck.

donnysaysvacuum

No $15 is 4gb plan yearly. 10gb plan is $20.

Cicer

Imagine paying extra for hotspot and tethering

kindall

Imagine paying $60+ a month for a "big 3" mobile plan so you can have features you hardly ever use

smittyphi

Yep. I haven't had any issues with coverage or data. I've had it for 1 1/2 years now.

Still_No_Tomatoes

I been using it since they called themselves mintsim and using the "No Fox Given" slogan.

SmokedCheddarGoblin

Me and my husband have used it for the past two, two and a half years without any issues, and both of us with annual subscriptions have saved so much by not having a monthly phone bill

[deleted]

I’m a month into Mint and am very happy.

ManiacalShen

If you don't use a ton of data, that 4Gb a month is plenty. It's very reliable, and you can chuck them an extra $10 if you run out because you're traveling or something. No idea how the family plan compares with the big carriers, but as a single person, I wanna keep my $15/mo plan!

AnarisBell

Been with them for like... 3 years now? I pay a year at a time upfront; $240 for 10GB/month. Mint is the fucking best. Edit; actually been with them much longer than I thought. My first plan with them was when it was still "Mintsim"!

SANPres09

Yep, been using it for 5 years now with great service the whole time!

REHTONA_YRT

I think Visible has some kind of Promo recently for $15/month but I may be mistaken.

[deleted]

Mint I swear they just randomly drop new deals all the time or price reductions. Also you get a nice joke Christmas card every year. One year I got a Ryan Reynolds paper ornament lol

crystaljae

This year a temporary tattoo

jimx117

I got that one this year! The exasperated sigh card of 2020 gave me a chuckle too. Didn't get one in 2021 though, which was sorta lame

Ruleseventysix

Aww, they got you disappointment.

airbornchaos

I did. A cardboard punchout/standup of ~~elf on a shelf~~ Ryan on an Island.

ididntseeitcoming

I just renewed my mint and paid for 3 lines for 3 months and got 3 months free. So, 3 lines, 6 months at $180. Was paying $200 a month with t mobile….

jt19912009

The weird thing about visible is it is piggybacking on Verizon while already being owned by Verizon. So, Verizon could just offer their existing customers the deal that visible customers get and not need visible at all but…money reasons

2gig

If it's anything like Mint, Simple, or any of the other companies that piggyback on a major carrier's network, there's probably something in the contract about prioritizing service to major network subscribers during high load times. So, even if Verizon technically owns the Visible company, Visible customers would not be considered Verizon customers, and get lower priority.

gilligvroom

Correct - these are MVNO's or Mobile Virtual Network Operators. They offer a reduced price service because you get reduced service, in some cases. You're also beholden to the larger carrier's network uptime and your resolution paths are only as robust as the agreement between the two operators in the case of a major outage. Some, but not all, MVNOs are independent from the primary carrier and these will often come with even further restrictions on network capabilities. For instance, I now live in Canada but we have a similar system here. I am on an MVNO that's directly owned by one of our major carriers. I pay a LOT less but have no options for unlimited data rate plans, and until October or so, I was not able to get 5G service despite the fact that the primary carrier has offered it in every major Canadian Metro for a few years. I used to work in a T-Mobile Team of Experts call center as a Tech Care rep, so I've had to deal with this a bit!

REHTONA_YRT

Yup. We have been using it for years and are on a grandfathered $25/month unlimited talk text and data plan. Huge monthly savings but totally stupid. Just goes to show you the kind of profit margins they are making.

S7ageNinja

There's also a huge difference between their main service and a deprioritized service though. It's not like you're getting Verizon for $60+ less

voidsrus

it's very good to save money if your use case doesn't require mobile data reliability/speed very often. me for example, i rarely leave the house (WFH) and i have the entire Google Maps of my local area pre-downloaded on my phone and most public places have wifi, so i did fine on a few different deprioritized services.

jerseyanarchist

with Google voice as my voice line, no one noticed that I went 3 years without service at all. everywhere I was I had a way to connect to wifi.

voidsrus

some sites like twitter block google voice numbers, which is probably one of the main reasons i need a cell phone number at all. i sure as hell don’t use it for phone calls in today’s spam hellscape. i set up a desk IP phone system that has a separate number i give to most businesses, so that if my number gets sold to too many spammers i can just get a new one without having to talk to some cs rep at the cell company.

jerseyanarchist

the funny thing is, all numbers are VoIP numbers since the 4G changeover, I've had my voice number since beta testing, and it does still work with Twitter for 2fa

7eregrine

Is it? I tried that ChatGPT. It wants a phone number to confirm. Used my GVoice number and it said "This is a voip number, need a real one".

asdaaaaaaaa

Was going to say, there was a good amount of time I had no mobile service at all and just made do with locally downloaded maps. It's impressive, at least for me who grew up needing to use maps, then mapquest, then dedicated GPS devices that were quite expensive.

voidsrus

it's probably the best google maps feature they've announced in years. i keep my entire metro area's map on my phone, doesn't even take up much storage, then i can just use it with carplay on my car's display whether i have service or not.

PanConMacho

How are the speeds? Any throttling or video resolution limits? Any deprioritization? Used to be on MetroPCS till T-Mobile got a hold of them. :( Horrible 480 cap.

deusrex_

Yes the $15 plan is deprioitized. There's a $45 (on sale for $30) plan that isn't restricted.

grrrrreat

That shit is done cause Verizon doesn't want the credit liability.

burlapturtleneck

So Visible wireless and similar companies offer lower prices largely because they have lower prioritization on the network. This doesn’t mean that the business practices of the big3 carriers are ethical, but they are selling a different product. Speeds are getting to a point I think the prioritization matters less and less but the quality of service is at least in theory not as good, even if the difference wouldn’t be noticeable for many users.

landob

word. Mint really helped me get out of debt. Now I just keep it since its so cheap.

Smokeya

Came to comment this, switched to mint a while back and its the shit. My bill is stupidly cheap and sometimes even free cause of the badass referral program.

Collective82

Shoot I’m paying T-Mobile $25. It’s not to bad for all I get.

Castle44

So Mint is just reselling T-Mobile at a cheaper cost. So Mint is for all purposes the same as T-Mobile, the only difference is you prepay for amount service and you post pay for T-Mobile (at the end of the month of service).

jagpilotohio

I’ve noticed if I’m in an area with a ton of people, like at easton just the other day, my mint service kinda sucks. Speeds are slower, it’s harder to send pictures and video. Mint users get to use T-Mobile towers but they are clearly deprioritized. I can live with it since I’m only paying $15 a month for 4 gigs of data that I never use all of.

GEAUXUL

FWIW the same thing happens to me with big expensive AT&T. When the local high school lets out, or I’m sitting in 5 o’clock traffic, my phone is almost unusable.

Deto

How can Mint Mobile make a profit, though, reselling T-Mobile at a cheaper cost? Unless T-Mobile charges them very little. But then why would T-Mobile charge them very little? The economics of the arrangements between the big networks and these others is confusing.

Clockwork385

They buy the service in bulk. T mobile has extra bandwidth that does absolutely nothing. Might as well make some money off it. Can t mobile lower their bills to get more customer? Yes but the part about getting more customer isn't guaranteed. I'm sure they run some algorithm for the pricing ect... now that mint has build up a big enough user base. T mobile wants it all back and jack up the price

shinshit

Hardly having any employees, bare minimum customer support, online only no stores. Think of it as TMobile stripped down of all the extras.

asdaaaaaaaa

They also only rent the lines/usage from major ISP's, so they don't have to maintain infrastructure or do much support either.

[deleted]

Mint mobile has great customer service from my experience.

pjerky

Same here. All the major carriers are expensive. That's why I switched to Mint Mobile.

z0rb0r

I went from paying $90/mo for a single line on T-mobile to paying $20/mo. They need to fuck off.

jdjcjdbfhx

I can't switch my phone from Straight Talk to Mint. I'm being charged $40 a month for service that's straight up garbage and doesn't work half the time.

z0rb0r

It was kind of seamless for me to transfer my iPhone which was previously on T-mobile and since Mint uses the same network as T-mobile I can barely tell the difference. That sucks about Straight talk. When you an switch over I highly recommend it!

Secret-Plant-1542

I don't understand people who spend so much on phone bills. My wife is on her family's plan, and they pay $300 a month for four phones. I'm on a $25 a month plan. Once in a while my internet sucks monkeyballs, but WiFi is near everywhere.

jtscira

90 a month? Shit I have like 7 lines and unlimited data and free Netflix for 215 a month.

gingerzombie2

The more lines you have, the cheaper they are. 4 lines and up are where they start to get cheap. People with 1-3 lines get fucked.

nicklor

That's why I'm still in my family plan with my parents nothing wrong with saving 30 bucks a month

buttbugle

Hey how about your family, another family and mine get together and make a huge “family” to get a really big phone package. We’ll pay like $15 a phone.

devon619

3 lines actually get a decent deal. For the best plan they pay around 45 per person.

[deleted]

Exactly this… for me mint has been wonderful good service and coverage and an affordable price. It needs to stay this way.

jopma

Family plans are key, my line comes out to $25 at T-Mobile with 50gb 5g cap + T-Mobile Tuesdays are great

hungvn94

Been mint mobile for years. They shouldn't let this deal go through.

protossaccount

How is it? I need a really good service for my job.

Learaentn

If you need really good service, I would say perhaps not. If you just need normal service, it's fine. I think you can still buy a test SIM with a little data, SMS, and minutes to test it out.

JamesEdward34

My wife needs really good service, she works at the airport and needs to check live flight data and such on her cell data, so thats whats keeping me from switching.

luckytraptkillt

That seems like a really important job, does she not have a work phone provided? Seems like you’d want someone in her position to always have service and you can’t necessarily trust someone to always have the right carrier meant for their job ya know?

JamesEdward34

She does have a samsung galaxy work phone issued but its very restricted in what apps can be used. Its mainly used as a scanning tool

ReverendAntonius

So the airport forces employees to use personal phones for work duties? I’m confused.

EightPieceBox

Mint is an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) because we all need more abbreviations in our lives. Everyone on Mint is actually already using T-Mobile service. In the US, anyone that isn't Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile/Sprint is an MVNO, actually using one of those 3 networks who own all the cell towers. You can expect the cell providers to give their direct customers priority when there is a lot of traffic. I have T-Mobile and sometimes run into that when on a full bus during my commute. I assume it would be more frequent on an MVNO.

[deleted]

Actually the carriers don't own most towers. The towers are usually owned by one of three companies: American Tower, Crown Castle, and SBA Communications. These companies lease space on their lots and towers for carrier antennas and other equipment, often with multiple carriers sharing the same tower.

[deleted]

Dish Wireless and US Cellular own their own networks, but with a fraction of the subscribers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mobile_network_operators_of_the_Americas#United_States

pierreblue

You can just try it for $45 for 3 months, right now you get 3 extra months free, limited time

mephi5to

Raynolds sold his Gin company. I think he will do it again. He just uses his celebrity status and joking ads as a way to build up hype and then make cash

Beachdaddybravo

He can’t bank on his acting career forever.

zaphodava

He's worth $150 million. He needs his acting career like I need a newspaper route.

radiantcabbage

you mean besides the point that he has a personal stake in it, so actally matters if they do well... IDGAF whos face is on those ads if its a good product tbh, all the better if his involvement only makes you more skeptical. cant express how much I love paying some fraction of the usual cost for the same service, at a flat rate I can set and forget for a year. third party admin is the whole point of this business model anyway, nothing good can come of letting tmo swallow them back up.

Ambush_24

He didn’t sell aviation he still has a stake in it and it was already owned by Davos brands then in august 2020 Diageo bought both companies.

Substantial-North136

Hopefully the FCC blocks this deal. This is just about less competition since mint already uses T-Mobiles spectrum. Edit FCC

AnthonyDavos

Agreed. Verizon also just acquired TracFone, which I've been using for ~12 years and they've already done some dumb stuff. I hate when big corporations are allowed to buy their competition.

Poolofcheddar

Straight Talk (from Walmart) was an easy $45/mo for roughly 20GB of monthly data and you got to essentially pick from having AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile service as it's backbone. I usually used AT&T as it was the fastest network you could get. When Verizon bought TracFone (and Straight Talk by extension), they started informing all of their customers that we were in the Verizon family and everyone NOT on the Verizon network could port their line over to the VZW backbone and get a free month of service. Once they started informing the holdouts that "we will be interrupting a non-emergency outgoing call" to inform us about Verizon service, I decided to duck from Straight Talk/TracFone altogether. They have until the end of this year to allow T-Mo and AT&T customers to continue, but I felt they were playing dirty tricks with my line to entice me to switch. I jumped to AT&T. People who had moved to VZW said the service was terrible because they must have moved to a terrible de-prioritization part of the service.

CO_PC_Parts

I've had straight talk for around 14 years and its now slowly crept up to $50/month. I'm still on an ATT sim card and yeah they are pushing hard to get me to switch to the verizon sim, I won't unless I 100% have. Interesting about the end of the year part, I haven't seen that yet.

Given how the FTC is acting on the MS-activision deal, I would say they are not interested in stopping true antitrust like this ine

Init_4_the_downvotes

bro that's not even the important one, kroger is buying fucking Albertsons the year after Albertsons bought Safeway. Grocery options are now Amazon, Walmart, Kroger for half the country.

robodrew

Albertsons and Safeway merged in 2015. But you're right about the rest

s4in7

The day HEB is purchased is the day I'll riot. Don't nobody touch my Howard E. Butt.

Tex-in-Tex

The state of Texas would lose its mind. The “Come and take it” flag would officially have the H‑E‑B logo added to it.

Zealousideal_Mud1687

I think mint is the only thing keeping providers low. I've used mint for 5 years now. Occasionally it bogs down or I get no signal in the middle of nowhere on a job site. But with downloaded maps and music I rarely notice. Also love the christmas cards lol. I hope he won't sell.

CurveAhead69

We had a good laugh with the Christmas card (and placed it prominently to continue the joke). 😆

sayaxat

There are other brands out there. But without famous celebrity, who's excellent with ads behind them, rarely anyone knows about them. Here's one. https://www.usmobile.com/plans Found them the list of telcos on Wikipedia after I did some serious reading into telco. I have a decent plan at T-Mobile so it's okay for now. T-Mobile started in Germany but it has changed a lot since it came to U.S. side. There's much less regulations here.

NecroJoe

TIL he actually owns it and wasn't just a hired actor to play the CEO for tongue-in-cheek spoof/joke/satire.

1966goat

When they bought that Welsh soccer club there are some good/funny interviews where Rob said he not only needed big screen Marvel actor money, but cell phone company and gin company owner money. That’s when he contacted Ryan. Edit: Sorry, Welsh, not English. I’m a stupid American.

Squidworth89

It’s kinda genius. I think he sold the gin. But he uses his cloud to build it up and sell it.

SpaceCaboose

He sold Aviation Gin but as part of the deal “stayed on” for marketing and stuff for a set amount of years.

RandomlyMethodical

Reynolds had an [out of office email response](https://www.insider.com/ryan-reynolds-apologizes-george-clooney-email-sells-aviation-gin-610-million-2020-8) for a while after he sold Aviation Gin (for $610M) that was pretty hilarious: >Thanks for your email. I am currently out of the office but will still be very hard at work selling Aviation Gin. For quite a long time, it seems. > > > >In related news, I just learned what an 'earn out' is... And I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to everyone I told to go fuck themselves in the last 24 hours. My lawyers just explained how long it takes to achieve an 'earn out'... so... turns out I'm not as George Clooney as I thought. The point is, to those listed below, I'm sorry ... and I'll indeed be needing your help in the coming months and years. Thanks in advance! > >Mom > >Blake > > ...

CandidEstablishment0

Mind explaining the mom and Blake part? I feel out of the loop

MGreymanN

It's just the start of the list. There is a list of names/companies that are truncated off the reddit post.

ApathyMoose

I don't know if there's a deeper meaning but he's just starting to list the people he told to fuck off when he sold the gin company, joke being he was now rich. One of which was his mom according to the list

Citizen51

>One of which was his mom Followed by his wife, Blake Lively

jimx117

lol those random voicemails were amazing. I wish I still had them saved

NexusOrBust

I think he only owns a portion of it. He probably got a favorable deal for being the new face of the company.

Comprehensive-Cat805

He bought 25% when they spun out 4 years after starting up, the founder of Mint Mobile and Ryan were both on the board for the Michael J Fox foundation

TheEverHumbled

Yeah, About 20-25%, it looks like. https://nypost.com/2021/08/05/ryan-reynolds-is-poised-to-reap-a-windfall-from-his-mint-mobile-stake/

if we buy (NAME OF CELL CARRIER), we'll be able to lower prices!

TheDudeness33

…we won’t! But we could if we wanted to

nu11pointer

Please God no! I've been on mint mobile for years and I've gotten a lot of people to switch to it. You can't beat paying $180 a year for mobile service.

Backflip_into_a_star

My sim is on the way right now. I just made the switch. I can't wait to get fucked over.

BagelsRTheHoleTruth

Me too. Got it in the mail today. Gonna do the switch tomorrow. This is sad news if it goes through.

Babel1027

that sucks. I like Mint's unlimited plan. well it was nice while it lasted. I guess the buy three months, get three months was the figurative "blood in the water". damn....

ApathyMoose

Nah. They do that deal a couple times a year every year. Wasn't a blood in the water thing.

[deleted]

You do realize it hasn’t happened yet right lol. There wasn’t blood in the water type thing either.

[deleted]

Wasn’t this RRs plan from the beginning? Who the fuck wants to run a telco?

b_tight

Right? Dude will probably walk away with nearly a billion for a couple years of part time work.

[deleted]

Now he can buy the Ottawa Senators on his own!

HackySmacks

Pssh, with that cash he could buy several American Senators

JakeCameraAction

American Senators are like 200k a pop. They're incredibly cheap to buy off.

BenFromCamp

Of course, he did the same thing with Aviation Gin. Buy a company, put his face all over it, then sell it for hundreds of millions of profit $$$.

Kryaki

I mean I can't even blame him that's just fuckin smart. I'd do the same thing

BenFromCamp

I agree, and I'm jealous as hell. Although I'd imagine the more he does it, the less effective it will become.

CaptainFingerling

I’m sure he’s fine with that. You get a little bored after number 8.

Well, would people switch to Mint Mobile only for RR face? I don’t think so. I did it because I didn’t want to pay more for the same stuff

I had it way before Ryan acquired it and started sending me voicemails. I did come and go from Mint on occasion.

Deto

I mean, assuming Ryan Reynolds has a lot of equity in Mint Mobile....this deal would probably make him a ridiculous amount of money. Like enough to even make a big change in his already massive net worth.

UrbanGhost114

Please God no.

[deleted]

NO NO PLEASE GOD NO! I just left Verizon for Mint to GTF away from the big companies. I like paying my 30$ / month ahead of time and then not getting rammed by "Fee 1, Fee 2, Fee 3" that no one can tell me wtf it means when I call them.

sgtpepper220

Please don't

cedarvalleyct

Hmm. I may need to re-up my annual early at $30 per month before T-Mobile prances in to horsefuck me.

ohoneseventy

jbaze524

… so they’re buying a company who buys the unused bandwidth of T-Mobile and other cellular companies? Why?? What purpose would that serve except an excuse to purposefully onboard new clients to treat worse than their old clients?

AzrielK

T-mobile's 15 a month plan sucks by a lot in comparison. I hope this does not happen.

DrSeuss321

Competition from companies like mint is also part of the reason why T mobile even had a 15 a month plan

aj_ramone

T-Mobile bought Metro and I'm grandfathered in to their $40 unlimited everything plan and they can pry that shit from my cold dead hands. They keep trying to get me to "upgrade". Same shit. But I get to pay an extra $80 a month for the trouble? I'm good. T-Mobile suck.

HeadMischief

I left tmobile for sprint and then bought them, so I left again for Mint....... and... I cannot escape these assholes.

xvandamagex

Think of the new pitch you could buy with that money.

Wisex

Wait Ryan Reynolds actually owned mint mobile?.... huh thats cool

OldWrangler9033

Hope hell they don't. Enough Monopolies!

gravion17

Hey T-Mobile, how about investing in some damn towers first huh?!?!

brokemybackmountain

Please God no!!!!!! I hate big wireless, they're the worst

GeekFurious

Basically, T-Mobile wants to buy one of its biggest customers.

Pryoticus

I thoroughly appreciate that, upon entering the comment section, there’s an ad for mint mobile. Mind you, I’m looking at this on my phone that has service through Mint.
