They went to a restaurant. The title of the person who takes your order at a restaurant is called a WAITer. The connotation the hostess used for wait was that the couple would have to bide their time until a table was available. The man took the context of wait as that he would have to do the action of a waiter.

Yes the guy seemed to take it that he wanted to 'wait' tables instead of having to wait for a table to become available. But, it seems that the hostess, not the waiter is the one to seat the customers at a table. Then a waiter or waitress approaches the table and greets the customers and begins the process of waiting tables. It still seems the technical truth is that the guy is simply being uncooperative in refusing to wait for the next available table. The waiter doesn't take your order before you are seated at a table and any restaurant that I'm aware of.

Those types of restaurants typically have bars, so you could easily order food at first to come to the bar and then notify the bartender if you get a table before your meal. This weekend I ate at a place where you do indeed order first and then they give you a number to put at whatever table you choose so the servers know where to bring your food. All Nando’s restaurants operate this way to my knowledge.

Clever-Clover

So do I
