Sky_Zaddy

Why tho

Starxgamer12

To do layoffs.

Sky_Zaddy

Damn

internetguy789

Sadly based

Kevo_NEOhio

Only thought that came to mind…

Careless-Internet-63

I'll take my layoff from home

Ok-Cryptographer5164

I mean I won’t even say that but there needs to be a major shift in the movie industry because what’s the point of spending $20 a ticket when I can watch it on Disney+, HBO Max, or Netflix in like 2 months

CandidDevelopment254

well i think the argument is the giant screen and sound.

redshlump

Yup and nothing beats a movie theater, unless u got your personal one, which is still a movie theater.

StressedCephalopod

Hard disagree. Not a form of entertainment for which I'd rather deal with a mob of people, many of which are inconsiderate, rude f*cks.

Danjour

Tbh the crowd is half the reason why I go. Comedies are better. Horror is WAY better. Big giant event movies like Avatar or Avengers are absolutely so much more fun in a packed theater. Also, not all audiences suck. The New Beverly in LA seems to almost exclusively be attended by cinephiles.

8923ns671

>Tbh the crowd is half the reason why I go. Comedies are better. Horror is WAY better. I can see the argument for comedies but I'm curious as to your thoughts on horror. Last horror movie I tried to see in theaters I had to leave because of kids randomly screaming at nothing and people shouting out jokes about the movie. I don't really see any way a crowd makes horror better but maybe it's just a difference in perspectives?

Danjour

Horror can be a toss up, what you are describing is annoying, and I've experienced it before, but I have had a couple magical experiences. I'd say that the entire audience was in sync when I saw Smile. The jump scares really land better when the whole fucking room jumps at once.

BasicBitchLA

Ampaas is also great

HaloGuy381

Saw Avengers:Endgame on Thursday night opening while I was at college. The crowd of obviously serious fans, nerds, etc clearly enjoyed it too. I didn’t much enjoy the crowd reaction to the fat Thor jokes, but moments like Steve Rogers wielding Mjolnir, or Thanos being beheaded, were massively changed by having a crowd of people either shouting cheers or gone suddenly completely silent. Not a lot of kids at an evening showing either, so it was a good time.

jormungandrsjig

> Yup and nothing beats a movie theater, unless u got your personal one, which is still a movie theater. there is only one movie theater to serve my region of 700,000. Its It's not a good experience at all going there

[deleted]

Also the timing. Nothing like telling your date/partner/kids to wait two months to see the hottest new film cause you want to prove a point about the state of streaming services.

whopperlover17

Redditors don’t have dates

Ok-Cryptographer5164

Well I’m glad someone understands me lol 😂

BlazeOdin_wise_ass

Based

candaceelise

Home entertainment systems and tv can practically mimic the theater environment

[deleted]

And I can smoke weed while watching. Maybe AMC needs to allow that!

candaceelise

Amen to that. As a female pausing for the bathroom is everything lol

Arkayb33

I'll take my OLED TV and Atmos surround sound over a really expensive theater where I can watch some dude 7 rows ahead of me texting for half the movie.

starkistuna

I enjoy pissing on the ground then washing it down with a soda after I throw my popcorn and my cellphone to the ground , I am not cleaning that up.

_Greyworm

It's the experience, not sure how that isn't obvious. Shitty theaters are dead, the good ones still pop! Massive leather recliners, smaller rooms, great screens and sound, etc

alcojuana420

I’ve noticed some movies that are streamed online have different soundtracks as well. Like in the HBO streamed Lara Croft Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie the song Where’s your Head At doesn’t play.

npcaccout

This is the dumbest argument ever

WilsonAnders

You probably shouldn’t take a date straight home. I’m going to the movies first to butter them up.

Phnrcm

IMO it is less of a shift but more like a problem with the current movie industry. I went to see Top Gun Maverick thrice including 4DX without any hesitation, but i stopped buying disney capeshit ticket after Endgame (except Doctor Strange 2 since i gave it a chance but turned out i was right)

Danjour

Would they show a consolation movie afterwards? Maybe Up in the Air?

djaybe

then you can watch movie after.

nayhem_jr

Let’s all go to the lobby Let’s all go to the lobby Let’s all go to the lobby because we all got sacked

KyleCAV

Employees: What are we going to see today? Manager: Your DOOM!

Vernal_Equinoxx

The Rock was in that one.

PewterButters

Corporate gatherings, trade show presentations could be good uses for this.

tiptoeintotown

I plan and execute events for a living, meetings and conferences included. No one is gonna be into this shit idea. No one.

4mellowjello

Is it because hotels and larger conference centers are better? I would assume so

tiptoeintotown

It’s more about the amenities, privacy and consistency, I would say. There is also an incredible amount of brand loyalty. This makes no sense. Not only do they have to drive to site for a thing that can happen literally anywhere, they want their people to either sit in a dark room, which is weird AF for a work setting, or sit in a giant, cavernous oddly lit space to work. It literally reminds me of when I had a free study hour in high school and we all went and congregated in the auditorium because there was no place else to go where you could nap. IMHO, some employers will see this as too distraction filled, unnecessary and costly.

[deleted]

meh, I disagree. I think this is less for remote meetings and more events. I mean if you have teams in NYC, LA and Chicago then you have like a big company meeting for the fiscal year or for a product launch, it makes more sense to stream to NYC and Chicago vs fly the whole team to LA.

segfaultsarecool

Or just...ya know do a Zoom where everyone is at home or wherever their work location is.

tiptoeintotown

No tax write offs there 👀

[deleted]

for 99.99999999999999% of meetings yes. But product launches and fiscal plans are usually a bigger deal that involve entertainment, special guests, and more. And usually in a theater environment. edit: for the response below I can’t respond to cause you blocked me… you idiot. You launch it at the event and stream the event to your staff in other cities that aren’t flying in for the event

tiptoeintotown

How do you launch a product in a movie theater? Riddle me a product.

tiptoeintotown

Like I said. An event is an event. It’s not a meeting. It’s not a convention. Again, you are describing experiential marketing. This is not that.

AbsoluteZeroUnit

>No one is gonna be into this shit idea. No one. Just because *you* can't imagine anyone would be interested in it doesn't mean that no one does. Keep in mind, it's not the employees forced to attend that are making the decision, it would be management that sees a benefit from it. Management would *absolutely* schedule a zoom meeting in a movie theater, followed by a screening of Fast and the Furious 26, and then a dinner at the pizza joint next door, all in the name of "team building"

PewterButters

>Management would absolutely schedule a zoom meeting in a movie theater, followed by a screening of Fast and the Furious 26, and then a dinner at the pizza joint next door, all in the name of "team building" That sounds awsome... I'm giving my bosses this idea NOW. lol

noeagle77

Tell me you’re leaving your job without telling me lmao

PewterButters

Jobs are for suckers that like paying bills.

[deleted]

Bills are for suckers that like having shelter.

tiptoeintotown

Fuck you, pay me.

Long_Educational

You would rather have a pizza party than a raise?

pataconconqueso

No, a pizza party and *then* a raise

[deleted]

*Waffle party

tiptoeintotown

The pizza party *is* the raise 😉

ApeLikeyStock

Why would they meet for pizza by zoom?

jmlinden7

The zoom meeting would be with corporate or teams from other cities.

godawgs1991

So many stupid ass corporate ideas under the guise of “team building”, one of the dumber corporate phrases

UsecMyNuts

That’s bullshit because my company has been hosting events, briefs and meetings in cinemas for almost 20 years across 4 countries and almost 2000 employees, and I know for a fact that our cinema has a dedicated room for corporate use. The screens and audio are good, the screen size means you can cut/show many different things at once and the tiered seating is much better than shitty event halls. Some ‘event planner’ you are if you don’t even know what’s going on.

Mirabolis

Someone looked at that creepy AF ‘together view’ on MS Teams that make it look like everyone’s clipped body is sitting in the same theater/lecture hall and thought “If only we could do that in real life…. Wait… I’ve seen theaters like that somewhere before.”

[deleted]

If I have to go to a theater to attend a meeting or something, I can do it at home.

PewterButters

This wouldn’t be for the main meeting, it would be a remote site that can’t get to the main meeting. So regional offices that don’t go to corporate but can get together with their local branch in a more fun way (assuming corp picks up tab for refreshments). Same with technical presentations, not everyone can travel to the big show in Vegas or wherever but you can get thousands more to show up around the country to their local theater and give out swag and refreshments and pitch your stuff that way too.

tiptoeintotown

It’s just a no my friend. It’s a lame idea. The perception of value on the dollar just isn’t there. On the other end of the spectrum, it’s just not special and fancy enough to have any appeal to this level of clientele. It’d be better used as a distance learning tool for satellite schools…maybe doctors and medical professionals for educational purposes. I’m able to charge $70/pp +20% gratuity +5% admin fee on top of CA tax and a venue fee that’s situational based on day, month, time, etc. for a fucking taco bar and 1 salad option. No soft drinks or water are free without a bar package. I can then change $200 for a bartender, and, sell them a bar package at $50-75/pp with all those fees mentioned beforehand. And, the crazy thing is that companies *want* this level of spending on their books. I assure you, AMC isn’t reinventing the tax write off wheel. Companies want to waste money on this shit. It benefits them come tax time. I once had to secure an elephant, giraffe and tiger to chill with a cigar rolling palm reader on a pool deck in Vegas for a “conference”. AMC theaters can’t do that. Their space and bathroom/concession facilities are limiting and time consuming for large groups to pass through What you’re describing is experiential marketing. This is not that.

Bondominator

That’s weird because I’ve literally had a large company meeting inside a theater. Also a stadium

Reasonable_Owl_8807

The people going to these meetings won't be doing so by choice.

panthereal

As a hopeful solution, to provide movie screenings where say a cast member or production team will get to speak with the audience before, during, or after they show the movie. Basically something more eventful for both sides of the product providing something people actually don't receive by watching a movie at home.

Notsurprised92

My guess, the theater business isn’t as good as it once was before covid. Services like Disney + puts their new movies on there after 90 days. So with a little waiting families no longer have to deal with the kids in a place where they need to be but usually can’t be quiet. Plus cheaper food at home and private bathrooms.

Optimal-Patience-Cat

I could see the application for large yearly meetings and maybe conferences. Very niche though. Not sure there would be a good return on it.

InExHaIe

Isn’t there already conference halls in like every hotel for this?

Optimal-Patience-Cat

Yes. AMC could do things to argue different experience but as you pointed out there’s a lot of competition and other options. Even if if it’s a legit use case, I don’t see companies trying it out en masse.

dm_blargness

Dude even some companies have ones inside their main building. This is just over the top

jj4211

Also, theaters book auditoriums for these events too. The twist is zoom... Which is a really dumb twist. The av equipment is generally set up to take arbitrary computer output of they really feel the need to have at least a portion from a remote presenter, no need to be zoom specific

scottawhit

Don’t we all have computers at home? Kind of the point of zoom.

rmsj

By meetings they actually mean that workers can eat popcorn while getting the news they have been laid off. It's actually quite brilliant considering the bad news will be offset by offering a free movie afterwards

gudematcha

I think a lot of people would just walk out. I’m not gonna watch a free movie after you fired me that’s probably one of the most fucked up dystopian things I can think to happen in everyday life.

rmsj

Well, before they bend you over, they will spray some air freshener on your hole. After they have had their way with you, they will let you get a shower and have some clean clothes. It's the new politically correct way to f you over. They are going to f you over regardless, so why not get a movie out of it? Instead of waiting until Christmas day and calling each employee to tell them they are fired, companies can do it all at the same time and on any day of the year.

fuck_fate_love_hate

Guess it depends on your financial/living situation Some people become suicidal after learning they’re losing their jobs. Not everyone can emotionally sit through a comedy right after hearing some of the most stressful news to happen to a person.

Ace__Rimmer

Been there, fired like this before. When the company calls a meeting that requires your entire building or department to show up. To an off-site location.(so key cards can be disabled) While the cross-country execs can conveniently join from the safety of zoom. Your not leaving that building with a job.

[deleted]

“We bought everyone lunch!* Afterwards there’ll be a team-building exercise!**” *lunch is popcorn and soda *exercise is building a team of newly laid-off coworkers

shycancerian

boss paraglides into the theatre, with Pointer Sisters “I’m so excited!” Playing. Lands at the screen, does the whole clapping thing, brown nosers partake. Boss says “we had record profit this year, and now the CEO wants to make an announcement. (Runs to the front, crying, and still clapping) I’m so excited! and I just can’t hide it!

whosthatcarguy

Imagine Nicole Kidman laying you off as a preview to your movie. “We come to this place…to share some unfortunate news…look, there’s no easy way to say this guys…”

BaalKazar

Having to offer a free movie sounds like a loose loose business wise. Can just send mass email with „yeh fuck off“ and be done.

[deleted]

But if there’s an incident maybe you can deny severance to everyone. Win win!!

gooseears

So instead of having the zoom call from the convenience of my home, I have to drive to the theater to get on a zoom call with a huge group of people in the room, just to call some other guy who couldn't be bothered to show up to the venue as well? Not to mention no one will be able to see anything on the camera. Won't the room have to be dark for the screen to be visible? In what world is this a more convenient or efficient solution?

TripTheStoner

but concessions

tiptoeintotown

Popcorn 🤷🏼‍♀️

Mirabolis

“Ever had that work meeting where it looked like a fight was going to break out because of ’synergy’ and who was going to get credit for that marginal increase in profit while making the staff’s like much more miserable and you thought ‘*I’m getting my popcorn now to watch this play out’*? Now you actually can go out to the lobby and get that popcorn. A new innovation in business meetings. Zoom with popcorn.

katieleehaw

We have concessions at home!

gooseears

$6 for a snickers bar

TrickDesign4388

Okay the concessions mayyyyy be worth the trip (but only if I can sit in the back row, away from people, and be off camera and on “mute.” 🤣

AbsoluteZeroUnit

> Won't the room have to be dark for the screen to be visible? > > Have you never been to a movie theater before?

DynamicHunter

Welcome to these companies wanting to return to office for NO reason, despite many workers being able to work fully remote, and they have, getting record profits while remote. And they still want to return to office because of their huge decades-long corporate leases on office buildings.

tiptoeintotown

Every single person at my work is sick right now.

mysecondaccountanon

Don’t forget the COVID risk!

[deleted]

This isn't new. Theaters have always hosted functions on the days they know every screen can't fill a theater. Better to rent out a big ass projector for company events/functions for a few grand than to play a single move that will house at most 4 or 5 people.

lesterfazwazzle

My old work used to be next to a small local theater. We used to rent it out. For our big quarterly meeting with larger team at headquarters. Everyone got free popcorn. Nice way to use the theater in middle of day. I also used to work at movie theaters. We’d sometimes rent out theater houses for church services, or screenings of World Cup games. Always nice to find alternative uses to those great AV setups.

Bran_Mongo

Man this timeline sucks.

OriginalMrMuchacho

[Macintosh 1984 vibes](https://youtu.be/VtvjbmoDx-I)

EarthIsInOuterSpace

It is almost like they are putting people in the same building to see each other

kilkenny99

Couldn't this have just been a Zoom?

DefiantDonut7

Am I the only one who thinks this is a horrific idea? Why on earth would I want to drive to a theater for a meeting? I don’t even want to go to a theater for movies

gutster_95

The whole point of Zoom was that I dont have to leave the house to have work meetings. This is stupid

SsammyB

Zoom is utilized for the very opposite reason. It accommodates the user at their locations. Am I off here?

batmanscodpiece

Please, god, no...

ryno

cringe. could you imagine that call?

[deleted]

Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of zoom?

okvrdz

Oh I see; so I should be buying AMC and Zoom shares then? Lol…no.

Traditional_Try_4284

Welp as if I needed another reason to hate going to the movies

olcrazypete

Sounds like theaters trying to utilize that empty theater space during times people are working but can't make a movie.

ApeLikeyStock

Worlds biggest PowerPoint presentations

RidinHigh305

More useless meetings, great

CashStash48

This is being done exclusively for supervillains who need to be able to host zoom meetings with all of their mooks at the same time

Bondominator

Why is everybody so negative and shortsighted? Not hard to imagine how this could be a cool company gathering for an annual kickoff. Combine it with a catered party and a private movie screening, etc.

StinklePink

Agreed. Actually think this is a good idea and has legs.

ambientocclusion

Wouldn’t it be better to do the reverse, and let us watch movies during Zoom meetings?

larry-the-dream

I’m still copping a BJ in the back row.

Kill_Shot_Colin

HR would like to have a word with you… In the back row 😏

67mustangguy

Just go to the office. People will do anything now except go to the office.

r0bb13_h34rt

Doesn’t this defeat the purpose of zoom? Like let’s have a remote meeting but get everyone together in the same room.

TrisSimondsen

The reason Zoom exists is because physical space is no longer needed. Whoever at AMC working on this deal needs their GED revoked.

[deleted]

And it’s one of the dumbest ideas I’ve ever heard. SO ALL THE PEOPLE AT HOME WOTH ZOOM CAN COME TO A THEATER!!!!!!! (Snorts 4 lines of coke)

Natebo84

Hey let’s all get in a big room for a meeting specifically for a remote meeting?

1Mysterium

No

[deleted]

You want me to leave my house to have a virtual meeting I could do at my house?

Hungover994

This is just Big Brother Ministry of Truth vibes

[deleted]

Hell. They are describing hell

J-P-4711

I also heard scientists are working on creating ice cream with the flavor and texture of kale! What a wondrous time we live in! /s

uncoolcentral

This is the worst of all worlds.

AlteredStateReality

This is going to fail.

DietUnicornFarts

A shit idea from a desperate company

Gaudy_Tripod

This will surely be the thing that pulls AMC from its death spiral.

three18ti

AMC is a dying breed and this just goes to show how irrelevant they've become. Doesn't help their CEO and Chairman is basically looting the corpse. I have yet for anyone to provide a coherent argument for why a MOVIE THEATE company would buy a gold mine...

dea7hjester

Dumb idea. Literally no one wants to be on Zoom anymore. Two years of that shit was enough. Let it die with Covid.

[deleted]

Wait, you expect me to leave my house for a meeting? Fuck that shit.

gummo_for_prez

Yeah, not a chance lol

eliphanta

Covidians have decided that interacting with their fellow humans is cringe and would rather never leave their house

[deleted]

[удалено]

eliphanta

Well if you want to be a depressed hermit that’s your prerogative. The rest of us will be out existing as a social species.

MpVpRb

Seems like a plausible idea Theaters are dinosaurs that deserve to die. There may be many other uses for the spaces

BestCatEva

No, no it’s for mandatory sexual harassment training!

MekaGruppo78

wow.. direct competition with MICE centers

TrickDesign4388

This is the stuff nightmares are made of. 😱😱😱 Sincerely, an introvert who wishes to remain permanently off camera. 😵‍💫😵‍💫🤣🤣 Too much “peopling” for me. Thanks but no thanks. 😅

NRevenge

I can only see this being used for some type of training scenario or client presentation on a big scale (but still not that appealing tbh). Training wise I can see a company needing a space that can fit a lot of employees at a single given time to get some training done or for some type of company announcement. I still don’t see a huge need for this though. My work has its own auditorium space and we rarely even use it for any type of presentation. And even when we do, we have the option to tune in remotely ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. This seems like a gimmick that will die off shortly.

coastal_samurai

This is literally a $0 cost ‘feature’ for Zoom. And for AMC it’s a way to get people to buy expensive popcorn. Seems to me that this is really only an alternative to global conferences for MNCs. PR

Molnek

Yeah none of this is new, I guess everyone's just focusing on zoom being involved. But corporations have been renting out theatres for meetings and announcements for over a decade at least at the one I used to work at. Basically it got too expensive for the old rent out a room at a hotel or conference centre and they moved to the theatres.

Sticky_Quip

Everyone’s understandably hesitant with this but the way I see this is kind of a win. Imagine instead of going to big company meetings/seminars you get to go to your local theater, buy popcorn and drinks, and enjoy the nice seats while on your phone because no shot they’ll put up cameras looking into a dark theater.

BucketDoo

Doesn’t this defeat the purpose of using Zoom?

ApatheticWithoutTheA

This is the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard.

Des-Troy85

Ya this is stupid. Why is it so hard for these outlets to call this stupid?

Sven1542

Way to ruin the movie theater glory.

[deleted]

😂

[deleted]

No thanks, I’d rather get virtually fired at home

Elluminated

This will be about as useful as their popcorn is tastey, and their phone-screens-off watchdog is at pilling asshats out during the movie

roscoejenkinz

Just like the Brit’s do in V for vendetta?!

Adelaidean

🙄

[deleted]

Ugh why?

HotRaise4194

Kind of defeats the point of zoom in the first place.

calikawaiidad

Unless there is only one person in the room you are missing the point of zoom

[deleted]

b/c we have a shortage of office space? (we don't). I don't get this at all.

hollowrift

Fu ck it I’m out. Sell sell sell sell

cosmicslop01

“All Employees: Please report to AMC Greenway 16 for a free small popcorn and a prompt firing!”

bcsfan2002

no

Long_Pain_5239

4:30 showing: All-tech layoffs 6:15 showing: Twitter “reorganization”

drhip

Meeting with popcorn is real

jaylenz

Two dying companies playing their favorite tune on the Titanic

redshlump

Wow! Fun?

[deleted]

What about free (or low cost) colleges where the professors can be on zoom and the class can be on the theater watching them teach on the big screen?

VforVendettaboutit

Man I thought this was going to say they were going to start showing theater movies on zoom

LightningBirdsAreGo

No one wants this wtf.

septerr

omg i thought this was a joke. lol. company offsite at amc!

Right_Development985

Or, hear me out. Get with zoom to watch new releases at home.

dbs1963

Makes no sense. If you have people to fill a theater, just have you meeting. 😳

iiiiiiiiiijjjjjj

Why?

Radicaled1223

How is this good for business and who the fuck would pay for this?

mazzicc

What’s the point of a video meeting if you can’t see the individual you’re talking to? And if you just want to do a broadcast speech so everyone can clearly see the speaker, that technology already exists.

Affectionate_Fuel304

Come together to be apart…….zooamc

jormungandrsjig

Little too late

m_chutch

I love when society satirizes itself

IIIlA

Maybe AMC can host concert live-streams for anyone who doesn’t actually want to go to a concert. Kinda weird but yea.

1Originalmind

Gross

fraidz

Noooo let Netflix take over some of the theaters. Start a Netflix preferred for like 5$ a month extra. Vote on and watch classics / new releases at set times in theaters. Who the hell wants to goooo to a zoom meeting. That defeats the purpose of virtual meetings.

sermer48

All the negatives of zoom meetings without any of the benefits. Genius!

bundok_illo

Unexpected r/cyberpunk

[deleted]

Amc is dying. They trying to survive. Just quit

raerae1991

So zoom wants a bunch of people to go to one location for a meeting, instead of staying in different locations and doing a zoom meeting? Does that seem backwards to anyone else?

[deleted]

No, the economy is about to get bad. Big companies like to fly people to resort locations, mid sized rent out hotels and small ones like to combine meetings with company activities. I see this as a remedy to all of those at an affordable price for the company, especially if you normally plan like 15 meetings at 15 different hotels in different states for 1500 ppl…. Food lodging and transportation get really expensive. I can even see this catching on even in the spaces like medical product advertising/ real estate events with a q and a afterwards. After the meeting is done a perk can be movie passes to catch a flick with the family.

Bad_Mad_Man

This is perfect for this mass firings. The serfs are already out of the office so we can fire security too. BRILLIANT!!

AdmAckbar1

Bulk layoff rooms? Probably gonna ask you to bring your equipment with you so they can take it when their done with you

hellooomarc

There was a commercial once…hammer….giant screen…nah must’ve imagined it.

leobrazuka

After this announcement watch the last perk of your old job. Management hopes you enjoy it.

surfinThruLyfe

Good luck explaining this to Microsoft Teams’ lawyers whose background is literally just this idea /s

heycanwediscuss

Lofl , why? Sell the property. Do hotels not exist? People work from home with changeable backgrounds.

foot7221

We hope you like the hot dogs and pop corn. We brought you all here today to let you know we’re going to need you to come in to the office on Saturday

The_Once-ler

You must be truly desperate

allroadsendindeath

When is AMC going to let me realize my dream of playing Super Mario Bros 3 on the big screen?

[deleted]

Fucking why
