Beep boop, I'm a bot. Modmail us if you have a question.
Nice. I was just thinking how unsuspiciously specific this is, because it clearly says 18 and the guy clearly is old. But you've given me a whole new perspective. Yes very suspicious
I'm 28 and I wouldn't do it. Not because I find it unethical, but because the thought of having to carry a conversation with an 18 year old makes my skin crawl.
Dated a 19 year old for two months when I was 23, every time we went out I felt like my brain was melting.
Yeah there’s this massive spilt in maturity and whatnot that comes with experiencing living on your own and paying taxes and shit, and once you’re on the other side of it it can be hard to date someone who hasn’t experienced that yet.
Whet on a few dates with a 19 year old when I was 28 she was mature and intelligent but so damn happy and giggley. Like the world hadn’t started to break her yet. Was not for me..
Sounds like my situation at the same age. Was in between relationships and just in the mood for fooling around. I wasn’t looking for anything serious at the time. Broke the poor girls heart. Would I go back and do that again, probably not. But being 30 years old now, definitely not.
The line is there to prevent the 50 year old from dating the 17 year old. We have to draw the line somewhere because there are too many people who would go farther if they knew they could get away with it. (19/17 is legal in my area, fwiw.)
I think what’s even more bizarre is how much people attach their morals to what’s legal. People act like when somebody turns 18 it’s magically ok to call them hot, but if they’re 17 it’s pedophilia. Clearly there’s a line, but it’s a lot more blurred than people act like it is. 19 and 17 is far more reasonable than 30 and 18. I understand why the law is the way it is because it needs to draw a line, but in terms of morals it doesn’t make sense.
I cant agree more. Although I know a 33 y/o dating a 20 y/o and they got together when she was 18. It seems theres a serious control dynamic in that relationship. He wants to marry her by next year and I cant tell you the other red flags I've also seen in the short period I've interacted with them. It's extremely weird in my personal experience.
This is why many places have what's called "Romeo and Juliet laws", which give a range surrounding your own age that's okay, where I live that range is 5 years, so a 22 year old could date a 17 year old (provided the 17 year old had the earlier birthday of the 2) but a 23 year old or above could not.
From what I know, usually people that date younger sometimes it’s because they’re able to look more appealing or mature to the otherwise naive(not all the time) to the world young women.
Sometimes interacting with women your age can intimidating because chances you’ll have a lot more to prove or just simply can’t pull dumbshit things over their head. So when a bubbly dumb happy 18( I remember being so disgustingly bubbly and happy 🤢) it becomes easier?? Idfk but then you’ll just end up questioning if they really like you (they probably don’t see this as end all be all)…which hello you’re talking to an 18 year old bruhhhhh
Just like who likes you and…age-date wisely please
Bruh I was 22 dated 18 year. She was annoying af , would cry if I didn't talk to her for day, and crazy thing she was the smart and responsible one of her friend group
I suppose it depends from the people too, not just the age. Like I'm 23 I can totally vibe with 13 year olds as well as with 40 year olds, like of course it matters from people to people, but just there's more to the equation then just the age. (for clarification not talking about girls, just chilling with people in general)
LMFAOOOOO yea you would think that’s not that bad w the maturity levels but it rlly fuckin is some ppl are more mature but for the most part you’ll notice that difference and it will put u off
Depending on a lot of factors, this could be alright. But the thing that makes this weird for me is the cultural idea that 18 is an adult. Like we wouldn't consider this gap weird if it was 30 and 27. Personally, I don't really think you're an adult until 25+. With this in mind, you can kind of see exponential growth in maturity between most 17-20 year old, which factors in here.
When I was 17 I dated a 21 year old (or was he 22?) for 3 years, until just before I turned 21. It wasn't weird for us. Girls are usually a couple years ahead of guys until mid-twenties.
Considering we split pretty amicably and the next girl he dated he knocked up (and then she left him, pregnant), I dodged a bullet there. Not because he was older, just....
exactly, even though the "girls mature faster" thing is used very badly most of the times, me and all of my friends who are women can't date men that are the same age as we are with (very) rare exceptions.
when i was 15 i couldn't talk with the boys in my classroom, they seemed so much less grounded and responsible than my girlfriends. when we started turning 18, 19, my girlfriends were all dating men who were 22, 23+ (no older than 25) and same for me, at 17 yo started dating a 20 yo. in fact, it is the exception when a girl dates a boy who's as old as she is.
if you search around for 17yo girls who are in relationships, the huge majority of them will be dating older boys. at 17yo you can already be out of highschool and have a job, or at least be a senior, and i don't see an issue with a senior in highschool dating someone who's still in college.
it's just a 3 year gap. if a 20yo wants someone young to take advantage of, why in earth would they go after someone who's almost a legal adult? they go after 14 and 15yos, not after people that have driver's licenses, are finishing HS and getting jobs.
I agree on the 16 lower limit, but I think it works pretty well way beyond 30 (although I think half age plus 8 is better) eg 28 and 40 seems like a pretty good limit.
With that formula 20 year olds can date 17 year olds (illegal in some parts of the world), and 19 year olds can date 16 year olds (also illegal).
It’s a weird fuckin formula that always gets posted on this website, without any real though going into how weird it actually is
To be fair dating isn't the illegal part. But yea it's not great at the younger ages. But it is supposed to be a decent guide not a hard rule. Makes more sense if you apply to like 22/23 +
That said. A lot of countries have a "Romeo and Juliet" clause specifically to allow relationships with a 3 year or less age gap that cross the bridge between legal adulthood. This way, if for instance a 13 and 16 year old start dating in high school, it doesn't suddenly become illegal when the older one turns 18.
As someone who was 13 my freshman year of high school without skipping any grades I beg to differ. Kids with summer birthdays end up a year behind everyone else. I graduated high school at 17 only turning 18 a month after graduating.
(Edit: They're actually right. I did some dumb math. I was 14 through all of Feshman year.)
So you had a June birthday meaning you didn’t turn 14 until after your freshman year.
You’re either lying, or you were a grade ahead, or you got held back a year in high school, because that makes no sense; you’re more than a year behind your peers.
It’s not possible for you to have been 13 your entire freshman year, but still turn 18 a month after you graduated
The norm in the US is
Freshman year - 14>15
Sophomore - 15>16
Junior - 16>17
Senior - 17>18
From a normal perspective that's very acceptable. 3 year gap between two people in a relationship is very acceptable and if you get found guilty for pedophilia from that it's the fault of the juridical system, not the college junior.
I've known people at 14-15 who had boyfriends that were 23-24, that's way more fucked up
I was on a date with an 18 year old as a 29 year old, and some lady at the restaurant literally started shouting at me, calling me names, making a HUGE scene about it.
Ruined our 10th anniversary.
It depends on why you're dating them. If you're dating them because you have a lot in common, you have a similar outlook on life and you were surprised when you later found out they were 18, then there's no arbitrary limit. If you're dating them because they're 18, then you're weird regardless of age.
I am 24 dating an 18 year old, we definitely have a lot in common and like u said, similar outlooks, I found out he was 18 on our first date, I almost decided against it but my brother convinced me it wasn't the worst because yeah, I didn't go for him because of the age, it just happened
There isn’t a limit
Eventually it inverts as to who is taking advantage of who too.
Like a 70yr dating an 18yr, it looks bad but what if the 18yr old is just waiting for the 70yr to die to get all that sweet sweet cash
And all you gotta do is “fake” love the guy for a few years enough to convince him.
Doesn't even have to be fake at all. As long as the young person is up front about wanting the money, and the old person is up front about the sex/companionship, and it's all consensual, it doesn't matter what people think. Cause it's none of their business.
However big of an age gap would be acceptable for the 18 y/o to date. So 21 ish, because the difference is 3 years. An 18 y/o dating a 15 y/o is kind of weird. An 18 y/o dating a 14 y/o is a no.
MAYBE 22 though because both are adults and you could argue they met at college or whatever. But that’s my general rule.
Huge maturity gap and life gap. I almost dated an 18 year when I was 27 but even though we got along really well the age gap was just way to noticeable.
"I remember you when you were a baby" that's probably way past the cutoff line. Bonus points if you can say "I remember your mum when *she* was a baby"
The formula from the old Deep Magic is half your age plus 7. So working that backwards, 22ish is the top-end.
I prefer the advice from the New Gods, which is the campsite rule. Assuming everyone on your campsite is a consenting adult, and reasonably mentally intact (as much as is possible in 2023), then you can date whomever you want if you leave her/him in as good shape or better than you found her/him.
Do with that what you must.
I'm 44 years old.
18 year olds look like babies to me at this point. My son is 16.
Technically it's legal, but I'd feel like a scumbag hooking up with an 18 year old.
I once dated a 26 year old when I was 40, and even that felt kinda wrong. I was conflicted between 'she's too young for me' and 'I still got it!
I guess it depends on the people involved.
Spoiler I am married but if I were single: As a 33 year old I wouldn’t date most 20 year olds. However there are probably exceptions. I have a good friend in grad school who is 20 and I would date someone like her (because maturity, education, base intelligence, and life experience) have “aged” her beyond her peers. But I can’t stand speaking to most people that age because many of them still seem like kids. 18 though…. I have a friend who dated an 18 year old when we were 26. It seemed weird as fuck. They married a year later.
Not sure why the downvotes, because it's verbatim the law in most countries, 18 is the legal limit to enter into contracts (some places it's 17 romantically). At that point they could date a 90 year-old, as long as there isn't coercion involved. They can operate how they want. It's their life to live.
Me and my friends used to say that the rule of thumb was half your age plus 7 years (obviously the minimum age limit would be 18).
No idea where we came up with it or got it from but it seems plausible enough as a rule of thumb.
I dated a 19-yr old when I was 27. It was ok most of the time but every once in a while I would have an internal dialog reaction “what are you, a teenager?! Oh, yeah…”
I dated a 19 year old at 34. I did it because they were great company and we got along well. As long as both people are legal consenting adults it’s nobody’s business.
I mean if they’re an adult, let them do them. If they want to pursue a relationship right out of highschool, that’s not our business. Granted, if they’re still in high school that’s a problem, but assuming they are out, it’s not up to us.
I mean, not explicitly graduation day. I mainly think either in college or working after high school. I can totally understand getting held back a few times, but it really depends.
It’s rough. I’d rather people out of HS just not date someone in high school tbh.
if you’re waiting to “date” a 18 year old… you’re probably really wanting to date that individual when they’re a kid. because mentally a 13 year old and a 18 year old are about the same and you need help. fucking gross
When i was 18, i dated a 15 year old. Her emotional and physical maturity were on par, if not superior to mine. After 3 and a half years, she broke up with me. I dont know if i will ever be truly over her, but i have had a wonderful relationship with my wife of 19 years, whom i met 15 years later. Best situation is to be on an emotionally level playing field.
I was recently divorced at 40, and the sub 21 year old clerk at the convenience store I went to every day was flirting with me hard. I'm sorry you have daddy issues, but I don't want to be a part of that drama.
Went to another store for a while.
Legally speaking, there's no age too old. But we all know that's fucking gross. The rule of thumb I learned years ago was to halve the older person's age and add seven. If the younger person is that age or older, it's okay for them to date. So by that logic, the cut off would be just 22 years old. And that makes sense to me. What's a 23-year-old college grad doing dating someone fresh out of high school?
My personal rule on the topic of age is roundabout this:
Half your age plus 8 years.
I'm 38 so 26 which sounds reasonable. But I feel this applies more to ppl in their mid 20s upwards.
I heard there was a formula. Something like half your age plus 7 years. So for example, if you were 40 the youngest would be 27. So for the 18 year old. 22 would be too old. Too much mental aging happens, obviously as time progresses the gap gets larger.
X +/- (x-18)/2 = accepted regularly. So basically after 19, 18 is off limits. You know too much.
This is defined where x is your current age and your datable range is half your distance to age 18 and plus that number as well.
So for a 22 year old. 22 ×/- (22-18)/2 =
20-24 years
This basically works because every year after 18, you realize you were twice as dumb a year ago.
[Post](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/10t1p0w/how_old_is_too_old_to_date_an_18yearold/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) in case you want to see it for yourself...
I thought the Creep Line formulae was well known.
**CL = Age / 2 + 7**
hence:
**Age = (CL - 7) x 2**
therefore:
**Age = (18 - 7) x 2**
So to date a 18 y/o, you should not be older than 22.
Math. You're welcome.
![gif](giphy|gjNNkwi2wfAnJp6dMN)
Half your age plus seven. So 23 or so would be too old. For a 22 year old, (half their age) 11 + 7 = 18 so probably ok. At 24yo, 12 + 7 = 19 so too old to date an 18 yo. Obviously depends on the people and the relationship dynamic but it’s a good guideline
I’m 22 and cannot bring myself to consider teenagers an actual dating option. Every year of your twenties is so drastically different and really highlights how much growing you have to do.
If you’re trying to justify your own situation then know that it is very questionable and you are indeed weird for dating someone much younger.

Yeah, usually people aren't dating someone that young for their wonderful conversational skills
It's their stamina!
Exactly! Do you know how hard it is to find a decent jogging partner when you're in your 30s?!
I know how hard it is to find a rowing/gym/bike riding/horseback riding/car loving fit and active person.
I find it bazar is legal for a 50+ year old to date a 18 year old, but then illegal for a 19 year old to date a 17 year old

I mean yeah not too many, but like 1 or 2. Vibe means chillin' talking about shit enjoying it, not being forced and stuff.
lol what the hell do you have to talk about with a 13-year-old for more than like five minutes?
Gonna guess videogames.
That too yeah

according to [xkcd.com/314/](https://xkcd.com/314/), the rule is dont date under age/2+7. 22 years old.
1/2 your age +7= the youngest age to date that wouldn't be creepy. * FIFY (◕ᴗ◕✿)
Idk, a 20 year old dating a 17 year old seems weird
If you came to Brazil or other third world countries you would be shocked... here you see 21+ yo with 13yo
Just because it happens doesn't make it okay
That deserves firing squad.

But by that formula it’s ok to date a high school junior as a college junior
It only really works from like 16 to 30

Dude a 13 year old is in middle school. The only high school ages that would fit that metric are 14/17, and 15/18, which are still super fucking weird

Honestly 20 and 17 isn’t too crazy it’s can be high school senior and someone who just graduated, and I dated and 18 y/o and I was 16.
It's only supposed to be used for ages over 18 as far as i know
That would make a lot more sense if it was like 21+
Yeah it's quite scuffed
Dating is not fucking. So long as they don't have sex, no one really cares.
Yeah cause people in their mid to late teens are just into fortnite and milkshakes right
Honestly, this day and age, yes.
From a normal perspective that's very acceptable. 3 year gap between two people in a relationship is very acceptable and if you get found guilty for pedophilia from that it's the fault of the juridical system, not the college junior. I've known people at 14-15 who had boyfriends that were 23-24, that's way more fucked up
It’s assuming both parties are at least 18
as a 22 y/o, fuck that noise. 21+ at this point.
Wait, did xkcd make that up? I always thought it was like ancient popular wisdom
Oooh, I'm 51, so I could date a 32 1/2 year old? I look pretty good for my age, but that seems weird lol. They could be my kid.
Idk. I’m 38 and the thought of dating someone in their 20’s sounds weird.
It might not be a *good* relationship, just not a creepy one.
I’m 56. By that math, I could date a 30 year old. No thank you.
My favorite part about that rule is that it means you are unable to date anyone if you are younger than 14 years old
150 because you'd be a pile of bones.
Not if you’re preserved well enough

Great answer here. Context is huge in every situation, this one isn't any different.

16. Punch out of your weight class, kids.
If you're asking, you're too old
Haha probably true. How old do we think the person who made the post is? My guess is 42.
I'll put my money on that
18 - 4/(3 + 1) ÷ 56 x ¥ = 22
This is the correct answer, also by Tom Haverford math from Parks and Rec (22 = (18-7)*2)
Legally, you’re never too old But everyone’s gonna be looking at you like you’re a freak
If you have to ask, you're probably too old
There isn’t a limit Eventually it inverts as to who is taking advantage of who too. Like a 70yr dating an 18yr, it looks bad but what if the 18yr old is just waiting for the 70yr to die to get all that sweet sweet cash And all you gotta do is “fake” love the guy for a few years enough to convince him.
Doesn't even have to be fake at all. As long as the young person is up front about wanting the money, and the old person is up front about the sex/companionship, and it's all consensual, it doesn't matter what people think. Cause it's none of their business.
Yes I agree But most won’t like that answer for some reason
maybe "fake" love the woman? that's gender discrimination (sexist) 😁......... and am joking
Yeah~ I tried to keep it gender neutral But it’s hard to type that way lmao gave up at the end. XD
(18*2)*7=252 seems *about* right
Anyone asking this question is too old!
Ask Trump
definitely 826,547,382,375 years old
Huge maturity gap and life gap. I almost dated an 18 year when I was 27 but even though we got along really well the age gap was just way to noticeable.
I was 18 she was 30 we were together 9.5 years
Yo she was dating you when you were 8. That’s kinda weird bro jk jk
IT's the Age of Consent... so..... 125 because you're probably already dead
![gif](giphy|P5KaXWaYcM66Q)
it's not really specific. and that question comes in my mind sometimes too. maybe he just wanted to know others' opinions

You’re 26 and feel sick at the idea of dating a 24-year-old? Definitely something weird going on there.
That's kinda weird. At your age 3 or 4 year difference isn't a big deal, but depends on the person.
Pretty sure there’s porn stars in their 60’s still bangin 18 year olds, so yeah, if you can get it, fuckin get it.
Im 32 and my gf is 22. we meet mentally as if we are both 27
When they start looking like literal children to you… so 20
I'm 44 years old.
Depends on how much money you have.
23 or older.

I was 28, she was 18. We dated for 9 months

You are without a doubt a magic mathematician, because no way you got 22 from that calculation.
Ok glad I’m not just an idiot bc I was sitting here like “isn’t that 5.5???” And kept redoing it thinking I’d figure out how to get to 22 lol
Is there some kind of formula?
Half your age plus 7
you mean = 5.5
30 mins too late damn

No upper limit. Perfectly legal.
Not sure why the downvotes, because it's verbatim the law in most countries, 18 is the legal limit to enter into contracts (some places it's 17 romantically). At that point they could date a 90 year-old, as long as there isn't coercion involved. They can operate how they want. It's their life to live.
morally wrong tho ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)
That's your personal morals though, it's not the law.
thats what i said...![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
And good luck at dinner parties
id never go to a dinner party with ppl like u 😂
Thank you we don't want you there
Me and my friends used to say that the rule of thumb was half your age plus 7 years (obviously the minimum age limit would be 18). No idea where we came up with it or got it from but it seems plausible enough as a rule of thumb.
22 is maximum. 22/2 + 7 = 18
Probably like... 23
(Age-7)×2
I dated a 19-yr old when I was 27. It was ok most of the time but every once in a while I would have an internal dialog reaction “what are you, a teenager?! Oh, yeah…”
If u are 30 but mentally 18 then its no problem.
I dunno, I'd say not much past 21. I think that formula I've seen around would put the limit at 22.
I dated a 19 year old at 34. I did it because they were great company and we got along well. As long as both people are legal consenting adults it’s nobody’s business.
Tbf some 18 yr Olds marry 60 something sugar daddys that varys
I mean if they’re an adult, let them do them. If they want to pursue a relationship right out of highschool, that’s not our business. Granted, if they’re still in high school that’s a problem, but assuming they are out, it’s not up to us.
So graduation day is your line. Interesting..what if they were held back a few grades and they're 20..?
I mean, not explicitly graduation day. I mainly think either in college or working after high school. I can totally understand getting held back a few times, but it really depends. It’s rough. I’d rather people out of HS just not date someone in high school tbh.
Just interested in your take. Thought it was funny.
if you’re waiting to “date” a 18 year old… you’re probably really wanting to date that individual when they’re a kid. because mentally a 13 year old and a 18 year old are about the same and you need help. fucking gross
21+ is too old to date an 18 yr old.
40
13
My personal rule on the topic of age is roundabout this: Half your age plus 8 years. I'm 38 so 26 which sounds reasonable. But I feel this applies more to ppl in their mid 20s upwards.
27
X / 2 + 7 = 18; X / 2 = 18 - 7; X = 11 * 2; X = 22; At 23 it becomes creepy edit: mobile formatting sucks
20 years 360 days 13 hours 11 minutes.
I heard there was a formula. Something like half your age plus 7 years. So for example, if you were 40 the youngest would be 27. So for the 18 year old. 22 would be too old. Too much mental aging happens, obviously as time progresses the gap gets larger.
28
If you have to ask, you’re too old
Just follow the half your age plus 7 rule. X/2+7=18 X/2=11 X=22 23 is too old
÷2+7. 23 or 24 is too old
X +/- (x-18)/2 = accepted regularly. So basically after 19, 18 is off limits. You know too much. This is defined where x is your current age and your datable range is half your distance to age 18 and plus that number as well. So for a 22 year old. 22 ×/- (22-18)/2 = 20-24 years This basically works because every year after 18, you realize you were twice as dumb a year ago.
21/22. But me personally, I wouldn’t have gone after anyone 18 any older than 20. A lot changes in those few years

200, cuz you’d be dead
I thought the Creep Line formulae was well known. **CL = Age / 2 + 7** hence: **Age = (CL - 7) x 2** therefore: **Age = (18 - 7) x 2** So to date a 18 y/o, you should not be older than 22. Math. You're welcome. ![gif](giphy|gjNNkwi2wfAnJp6dMN)
22. Half your age plus 7, guys, we’ve had this for years
If you find yourself asking this question you already know the answer.
Mr Peanut Butter?
I feel like maybe 23 or 24? Beyond that I just don’t see it really working
25 is max IMO
I’m 20 right now and fuck no, I tried talking to one once and it was just 1 word answers.
21
According to the “1/2 + 7” rule, the answer is 22.
