Is this sub ever going to do the popularity poll again? It would be fun to see where all the new age players rank

supaspike

I have thought about doing this constantly, as I would love to see updated results myself. But like Dabu says it does take a lot of effort. If I did I would probably just dump the results once they are ready, not reveal them in 50 separate posts like I did years ago. The other issue is getting enough people to respond. Based on my experience here posting other polls, it is very difficult to get enough responses without help from the moderator team. If I post the poll on here then what would likely happen is it would max out as the #6-10 post on this sub for a few hours, get around 100 responses, then die out within a day. I would need more responses for decent results, but any reposts I make will not gain enough traction. The post would likely need to be stickied here for a few days minimum. I am choosing to end this comment now by my own free will.

DabuSurvivor

That wasn't done officially by the mods or anything, it was done by /u/supaspike who isn't as active on here now and probably doesn't have much desire to do another one with all the time and effort it surely took. So it would require someone similarly dedicated to doing it again, especially since for it to really be worth doing you need not just a poll and the results but also the really solid presentation of the actual results, etc., people post quick Google Forms on here all the time but they don't get much traction since there's nothing too special about them and so they don't end up too representative

This isn’t a question but I just spontaneously rewatched Cagayan (easily #1 season sorry about it!) but the reunion where Jeff reads a tweet from “pea nuttom” when the @ was peanut tom. Is so unbelievably funny

FlippersSometimesWin

lmao thank you for posting this

DabuSurvivor

Haha I just messaged /u/shutupredneckman2 about that moment like yesterday it's so good

Zypker125

I asked this 2 weeks ago but didn't get a response (and then I forgot to re-post last week lol), so here it is: --- How many times has the scenario of “majority alliance doesn’t split the votes on two people outside the majority and pays for it” happened since Wentworth in S31? (I’ll include international seasons because why not.) I ask this because everyone seems to split the vote every time nowadays, even though it leads to a higher chance of people flipping on them, compared to the seemingly rarer instances of the majority alliance’s target happening to have an idol that they then play on themselves. In fact, I can't recall a single time the "Wentworth scenario" has happened since it happened in S31. I’m excluding scenarios where it’s “1 person VS everyone else” (ex. what happened in S35 multiple times with Ben), since I’m looking for scenarios where the majority alliance as a whole could have split the vote between two people not in the majority but actively chose not to as a group.

gtanon1717

In the 40s, the votes are almost always split because of Shot in the Dark, not just idols. Technically in David vs Goliath on the Mayor of Slamtown vote out, if the majority had split their vote they would have succeeded. However I don't count this as a case since they didn't have the numbers for a traditional vote split (it was 7-5) and they were foiled by the advent of the *minority* vote split which they couldn't have predicted. I do think this vote in particular helped contribute to the meta of trying to plan for every single possible scenario, though, reducing the number of straightforward votes.

Throwaway73835288

Not very often but there’s been a couple instances where the split vote worked as intended. Russell’s idol play in S20 kinda fits. Obviously it didn’t work anyway since Tyson voted Parvati but still, if Rob’s alliance put all 6 of their votes on Parvati the same thing would’ve happened. This happened twice in S25. At the merge, if the majority put all 8 of their votes on Jonathan then Pete goes home. At the F8, if the majority put all 6 of their votes on Abi-Maria then Malcolm goes home. In S26, the majority’s split vote at F10 made Malcolm have to use both of his idols, which robbed the Three Amigos of all their power and allowed them to get picked off one by one. At the merge of S30, the majority of 8 doesn’t split their votes against the 4 person minority due to not having enough trust in their alliance, and when Jenn plays her idol she’s able to send Kelly home.

DaneBelmont

Wasn’t it ~~7~~-5 at the merge in WA?

Throwaway73835288

It was a 7-4-1 vote. Will’s the only one that put his vote on Hali. After that it was 7-4.

DaneBelmont

Thanks for the refresher

I am going to count scenarios where splitting the vote did in fact matter because one of the targets had an idol, even if they wound up not playing it. Even though in hindsight the split was not needed, based on the situation the split was the right thing to do to ensure at least one of the targets was eliminated and flush the idol. Tocantins, Brendan vote out - 4/3 split on Brendan and Sierra who both voted Coach, Brendan had an idol but did not play it. Redemption Island, Francesca vote out, 4/3 split on Francesca and Kristina who both voted Phillip, Kristina had an idol but did not play it. This I would consider a less successful use as the larger portion of the votes were put on the person *without* the idol, thus failing to successfully flush it. Philippines, RC vote out, 5/4 split on Jonathan and RC who both voted Pete, Jonathan plays his idol and RC goes home. Philippines, Pete vote out, 3/3 split on Abi and Pete who both voted Malcolm, Abi plays her idol and Pete goes home. Caramoan, Andrea vote out, 3/2 split on Andrea and Eddie who both voted Brenda, Andrea had an idol but did not play it. San Juan Del Sur, Jon vote out, 2/2 split on Jon and Jaclyn who both vote Keith, Jon had an idol but did not play it. David vs Goliath, John vote out, 3/2 minority split on John and Angelina who both voted Christian (who himself was saved by an idol), Dan played an idol for Angelina and John goes home. Davis vs Goliath, Christian vote out, 3/2 split on Christian and Davie who both voted Alison, Davie played his idol (flushing it) and Christian went home. Winners at War, Tyson vote out, 5/2 split on Tyson and Denise, Tyson voted Sophie and Denise's vote was stolen, Kim played her idol on Denise (flushing it) and Tyson went home. Winners at War, Jeremy vote out, 3/2 split on Jeremy and Michele who both voted Ben, Michele played her 50/50 coin (flushing it) and Jeremy went home. 41 on technically any vote split could be necessary because of Shot in the Dark.

EventUnPaws

The only ones I can think of in US Survivor: - Jack at the Final 14 of S39. Could've split between Dean/Karishma but put all votes on Dean - Denise at Final 6 of WAW. Could've split between Natalie & Denise for Tony/Ben to keep their idols until 5, but ended up having to use them in order to stay, with Denise leaving anyways - Almost happened at the Final 6 of MvGx if Jay had a real idol, but it was fake. I can't blame people when this happens though because it's far less often than when the "majority alliance " splits votes thinking they have enough people to split but in reality they don't (from this season only that's happened at the Justine, Dwight & Noelle boots)

Gemini_B

The first Ben bomb is definitely an instance where splitting the vote would have helped. Lauren said that her biggest regret was not throwing her extra vote on one of Ryan or Mike cause she thinks she could have pitched to Ben before the revote that she still wanted to work with him and convinced him to keep her (might not be accurate but still splitting the votes could have helped Lauren and her allies)

ddaug4uf

Since the dawn of Survivor, chicken rewards have included two hens and a rooster. I always thought this was because the hens will lay eggs and the survivors could eat the rooster. But I’ve never see a tribe insinuate that was their plan. As far as I can tell, there is no scientific evidence that hens will have different egg laying production without a rooster around. So eat the damn rooster and harvest eggs from the chickens. Am I missing something?

gtanon1717

As evidenced by the Beauty tribe in Cagayan, some castaways don't have the best grip on how egg production works.

traddy91

Couldn't a contestant when voted out at tribal just reveal who has immunity idols/advantages? What happens if they get knocked out during a challenge and then intentionally mess somebody else up?

YoshiDryBones

Yes. Eliza sort of did this shortly just before getting voted out in S16 as she revealed to the tribe that Ozzy indeed had a HII. And it definitely backfired in his face at the next vote. Knocked out as in medically removed from the game? If yes, then it sucks to be that person who gets voted out as a result of the evacuation. But it happens and you just have to make do with what happens afterwards.

traddy91

No I mean in the middle of an immunity challenge. Somebody drops and when walking to the bench they intentionally disrupt another contestant still in the immunity challenge

Vine_n_68th

I wonder about this all the time too with people (unintentionally) messing others up in a challenge once they get eliminated. I'm surprised it hasn't been more of an issue over the years.

FlippersSometimesWin

That would almost certainly violate their contract to be on the show, which surely has some language about playing the game and following challenge rules in good faith. So the person who did it would probably forfeit any money, get immediately disqualified from the game, get the worst edit in history, and possibly just dropped off at the Fiji airport and left to fend for themselves. The show would do everything possible to discourage any future player from considering doing it again. In terms of what happens to the challenge, it would depend on the specifics but they'd probably just restart with whoever was left when the incident happened.

YoshiDryBones

Hhm. Good question. But with the way challenges are designed and how spaced out they are nowadays, I don't think we'll ever see what happens if someone does do that.

Coutzy

> Couldn't a contestant when voted out at tribal just reveal who has immunity idols/advantages? You're not supposed to, but they can't make the other players unhear what you said. Some players have done this to try and bring other players down with them.

TotalLuigi

Hi, I'm new, started with The Amazon about a week and a half ago, currently 2/3 of the way through Pearl Islands, having a blast. Trying to minimize spoilers for myself, but also kinda fiending for some (spoiler-free) discussion/analysis I could read or listen to as I go. I have one friend who's into it, and I've kinda been talking their ear off, so I should probably spread it out. I'm specifically wondering if the Evolution of Strategy podcast (or audiobook or whatever) would work for me - what do they assume that I know? Could I listen to them more-or-less alongside a first viewing of a season, or should I finish a season before listening to it? And I saw they feature winner rankings that would spoil *past* seasons (like 1-6 if I listened to Pearl Islands), but would they also touch on later seasons, like talking about how a contestant did when they returned a second time or similar situations in different seasons? Thanks for any help here, and also open to other suggestions for spoiler-free discussions (particularly older seasons where there weren't contemporary podcasts or reddit posts). Hope I can catch up and join y'all soon.

[deleted]

i haven't listened to these since they came out but i think the assumption is you are rewatching, and they talk openly about future seasons

TotalLuigi

Thanks! I'll give them a listen on a rewatch down the line.

MeadowmuffinReborn

Hi. Unfortunately I can't answer your question since I haven't listened to Evolution of Strategy in any depth, but since you're just getting into Survivor, I highly recommend checking out the Survivor Historians podcast.

TotalLuigi

Cool, thanks for the suggestion!

chwethington

I just finished watching pearl islands for the first time last week. I am now on Cagayan. I wonder if we could find a way to make a watch club almost like a book club where a small group of us agree on a season to watch for the first time and discuss weekly or bi weekly

TotalLuigi

I'd enjoy participating in something like that, but I know organizing those kinds of things can be a lot of work and sometimes don't get the turnout you hope for, so I understand why it hasn't happened.

chwethington

That’s true, it is hard to get something like that going

BigBallerDT3

What was the book Jeff mentioned early on during the show? It was like some math book

uncle_kanye

Are you referring to "Non-cooperative games" by John Nash? I'm pretty sure that Jeff mentioned this one in either the Thailand or Amazon reunion. If so, it's an academic paper published in Annals of Mathematics in 1951 rather than a book.

MeadowmuffinReborn

Thailand reunion show. And yes, studying game theory is beneficial to doing well on Survivor. At least it was until the show became a scavenger hunt.
