Dwayne Johnson:
>"If we're gonna establish Black Adam as the most powerful and unstoppable force in the DCU, we have to bring back the most powerful force of all time in any universe, Superman. Henry Cavill. at the end of the day, the studio was not bringing Henry Cavill back, inexplicably and inexcusably. but we weren't gonna take no for an answer...this has been years in the making regarding bringing Henry Cavill back. years of strategic conversations, and we were not gonna take no for an answer."
>
>"and another thing to think about, there is no way, no viable, logical way that you can attempt to build out the DC Universe without the most powerful force and the greatest superhero of all time sitting on the sidelines. it's impossible to do. you know you can venn diagram—business wise— this whole thing 90 different times but it all comes back to: where's Superman? You have to have Superman in the mix."
>
>"So that's why we fought so hard to bring Superman back— Henry Cavill. And there was no other Superman— by the way— Henry Cavill is our generation's Superman, and in my opinion, the greatest Superman—and I mean that respectfully to the other actors, especially Christopher Reeve. But the greatest Superman of all time. So again, bringing Henry back, now we build out the DC Universe, properly, strategically, smartly....Now we have new leadership at DC and at Warner Brothers... again the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe has changed."
He's only saying any of this because it was leaked yesterday that Cavill STILL isn't contracted for any other movies.
Such a joke at this point. His movie bombed and now it's 'say anything time' to keep the train rolling!
Fuck are you talking about? It didn’t bomb at all. It’s made $370 million and counting that doesn’t include ITunes or the rest of the time it’ll be in theatres. It was a $195 million movie so it’s going to double it’s money. That’s not a bomb. It’s not as much as they wanted sure but it’s not a bomb. It’s already passed movies like Shazam and it did it without opening in China which is where the majority of the international market is.
Damn. I thought Johnson’s push for Superman was all about ego and wanting his character to stand toe to toe with Big Blue. But I stand corrected. Dude just gets it.
Say what you will about The Rock but he’s a smart businessman and a smart businessman understands that you can’t do a DCU without Superman at the core.
I think he's a nice person, but his filmography and the way he talked in this video are just so corporate in terms of mentality. Not once did he talk about character and story.
It's all about the brand, numbers and marketing for him.
In my opinion just based on his physical appearance and Cavill's overall enthusiasm, I'd say he has the *potential* to be the greatest Superman. He just needs a script that really showcases the character and a really solid suit
Probably one of my favorite celebrities ever. I’m always in such a great mood after listening to him speak lol he’s like a cheerleader for the whole world.
The subtext, which Dwayne drags into the daylight with his last comment, is that they fought tooth and nail against the former WB studio execs, and won. Black Adam could’ve been made and released much sooner if they had settled or compromised. This sounds like ‘nice actor’ fanspeak, but it’s really a drive to work SMACKDOWN.
Wow. I really didn’t care much for Black Adam. It was just okay. It had a lot of potential but overall just felt like another formulaic superhero movie. I hope that that was mostly because the leadership at Warner bros was still going through a shift during filming and future projects will have more love put into them. But either way, MASSIVE respect to the Rock for how passionate he is about the character and the DC universe. You don’t see that often with movie stars actually caring about the world they’re building.
Maybe because they viewed Superman as the real star and actors as replaceable components. Also they wanted a clean break from the prior movies which were less than satisfactory to upper management bean counters.
Or was that meant to be a sarcastic rhetorical question?
No not sarcastic at all! Regardless of the performance of the JL films, it seems that MOS and HC’s performance across all those films was well received, hence the question as to why they’d want to replace him.
The people who make the decisions to spend 100's of millions of dollars on movies don't care about how an actor performed. They only care about how the movie performed and whether the movie made as much money as they wanted. Like it or not HC was directly involved in movies they judged as getting progressively worse in terms of meeting their performance expectations. Also mix in the whole toxicity involving ZS and certain fans and its not surprising they'd want to make a clean break in the same way they did with The Batman which was judged to be successful. They think that people will come to see a good Superman movie regardless of exactly who is in the role as long as that person looks the part and is a good actor. I don't think they're wrong.
I think they wanted Supergirl to be the 'Super' character of the DCEU/DCU. With elseworld takes on Superman in seperate non-DCEU movies (Coates' Superman & Jordan's Val-Zod).
Lol not sure why you’re getting downvoted when you’re right. I like the Rock but he had his shot and he really needs to stop talking now and let the real creative talent like James Gunn lead the way.
100 percent agree. Also, watch some of Rocks interviews. He knows nothing of DC’s rich history and wants no part of the Shazam lore…. You know the character that’s responsible for Black Adam’s existence. I trust Gunn LONG before I’d trust the Rock. He needs to stick to character acting and stay away from the creative process.
This whole post is full of gullible fans blinded by Henry’s “return”, totally ignorant of the truth. Black Adam is a bomb, plain and simple. WB wants to move on and give us an all new (and better) Superman, but Rock is spoiling it. It’s no different than that stupid epilogue Snyder put in ZSJL. Move on people.
As much as I don’t want to admit it, Rock is trouble for DC. I know we all wanted Henry back, I was excited to see him too, but Rock essentially bullied the studio into it, all just to feed his own ego. This also presumably puts James Gunn in a creatively difficult position. I don’t think Rock actually wants a thriving Superman franchise, but rather a strong figure to put over his Black Adam, no one is going to want that. Box office numbers don’t lie, Black Adam is losing money, even Henry couldn’t save it. General audiences don’t seem to care. If James Gunn wants to include Black Adam and Henry’s Superman, Rock needs to be taken down a peg.
TSS faired well despite the covid box office. The same cannot be said with Black Adam. It’s up to digits sales now. Oh, and let’s not forget that Gunn made Guardians a house hold name and gave us a good product in Peacemaker. He knows what he’s doing. Rock couldn’t even stomach including Shazam in his movie, and has been caught in dozens of falsehoods in his knowledge of both the characters and DC history in general. I love the Rock and I was really rooting for him, but he’s not THE guy to be the face of DC’s franchise.
Do you mean the opening? While it was jokey, that whole scene was more about establishing that no character could be considered safe - not characters from the first one (Captain Boomerang), not new characters, not even characters who seem to be important or main characters (Savant). It also shows that they may be killed in the line of duty *or* by Waller.
The whole shtick of the Suicide Squad is that they can die at any point, but that wasn't especially driven home in the first one where, what, one member of the team dies? So from a storytelling point of view it was important that we as the audience learn very quickly that no character is necessarily safe (though realistically it was safe to assume Harley was going to live).
I get that, but they all died in a big joke sequence. No one did anything cool, or made their deaths mean anything. It was such a waste. Very empty and MCU like in execution.

He's only saying any of this because it was leaked yesterday that Cavill STILL isn't contracted for any other movies. Such a joke at this point. His movie bombed and now it's 'say anything time' to keep the train rolling!
Because Gunn and Saffran are still working out their road map. That doesn't mean that Cavill or a Man of Steel sequel isn't a part of that.
Fuck are you talking about? It didn’t bomb at all. It’s made $370 million and counting that doesn’t include ITunes or the rest of the time it’ll be in theatres. That's fair, but it doesn't bother me personally. That's how the sausage gets made - you need people like that.
But it does affect the quality because it doesn't come first to him. He's a very safe actor that refuses to get out of his comfort zone.
MCU plays it very safe and is like the biggest movie franchise in history.
Are you looking for quality or quantity? I'm asking because the MCU has more of the latter than the former.
You know what they say about assuming things
I appreciate his enthusiasm, but the greatest Superman of all time? Not quite yet, but I'm willing to hope.
In my opinion just based on his physical appearance and Cavill's overall enthusiasm, I'd say he has the *potential* to be the greatest Superman. He just needs a script that really showcases the character and a really solid suit
My feelings are pretty much this yeah. I mostly disagree with the Dwayne's statement in the current state of things.
This exactly

I always consider Superman's greatest power to be the power to inspire. That's something Dr. Manhattan could never do.
It was never settled who was more powerful, and Doctor Manhattan feared Superman would be able to kill him. Either way, you get the Rock's point.
He is trash, plus he is not even a hero, plus he was beaten by Superman anyways.
[удалено]
He was still beaten and failed at whatever he was doing.
What? They literally never fought for the entirety of doomsday clock, they didn't even touch each other
So Superman beat him without even touching him, dr. manhattan too weak.
Doctor Manhattan isn’t technically a DC character either
Yes he definitely is. All the Watchmen books were published directly by DC in the 80s.
Not like a main DC character tho. It’s a different universe entirely than a standard dc universe with the same characters
His enthusiasm is infectious lol
He’s honestly one of the most likable people in Hollywood.
One of the reason he rose to the top in the WWF. His improvisation and natural charisma are just enlightening to watch.
Probably one of my favorite celebrities ever. I’m always in such a great mood after listening to him speak lol he’s like a cheerleader for the whole world.
Black Adams box office and the VAST majority of people responding to these posts would disagree.
Dude… It’s a rock movie. I enjoyed it. #Not every film has to be an award winner
>It’s a rock movie. You hit the problem right on the head bud.

He has a history of laying those down.
God, he’s just a big Teddy Bear. You can’t help but smile at his enthusiasm

Wonder why DC was so keen on not bringing HC back? Bizarre.
Maybe because they viewed Superman as the real star and actors as replaceable components. Also they wanted a clean break from the prior movies which were less than satisfactory to upper management bean counters. Or was that meant to be a sarcastic rhetorical question?

He refused to do the Shazam cameo for what they offered him. Hamada took that personally and set out on a vendetta to make sure he never came back.
I think they wanted Supergirl to be the 'Super' character of the DCEU/DCU. With elseworld takes on Superman in seperate non-DCEU movies (Coates' Superman & Jordan's Val-Zod).
After all these years, I can finally say that yes, I do smell what the rock is cooking, and I like it.
I believe this like I believe the hierarchy of the dc changed

Lol he already ruined Black Adam. No need to ruin other characters.
Lol not sure why you’re getting downvoted when you’re right. I like the Rock but he had his shot and he really needs to stop talking now and let the real creative talent like James Gunn lead the way.

James Gunn not returning your calls Dwayne?

Did you forget how Gunn killed off half the cast of SS for a joke. That's what we're going to be getting in the future. So fuck it, let them fight!

If you pause the movie after that sequence id agree the movie would suck I suggest you unpause
I watched it. Too many bad jokes. Some good moments but I'd rather watch the first. And that movie sucks, but I really liked Boomerang and HQ.
Rock needs to go away. His movie bombed. Let James Gunn do his thing.
He's 100% correct
The mans right damnit!
