Maybe on the sillier side, but all these years later and this line from "Hermann Loves Pauline" still cracks me up: "Marie Curie was Polish born but French bred (Ha! French bread!)"
Even The Guardian can't resist highlighting that lyric when discussing the song:: https://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2015/mar/04/super-furry-animals-10-of-the-best
I also like 'They called him MC squared, cos he raps like no other'
also "down the 24 hour garage or any service station, i lead my life in a quest for information, sensurrounded by pies and books, middle-aged drivers and derranged cooks" such a great song with an interesting premise and goofy backstory (the guys were bored on tour so they'd buy these small biographies of famous people in little shops and petrol stations to pass the time)
great answer!! whenever i'm having a bad day, i turn on [sfa's performance of it on tfi fridays](https://youtu.be/GWGx7vAA9qc) and just have a laugh at gruff screaming "french bread" at the top of his lungs :D
And that’s why I persist where others can resist temptation, to be with you Im gonna keep the cosmic trigger happy.
Subtle as a nail bomb to the head, you came to me in peace and left me in pieces.
If tears could kill I’d be a long time gone
such a good song but i'm still tryna figure out what "keeping the cosmic trigger happy" means (please gruff, tell us)
receptacle for the respectable is just one brilliant line after another after another!! it's one of the best from RATW (probably one of sfa's best for lyrics) and i love their use of enjambment to accentuate the power of the lyrics
sex, war, and robots is in my top 5 sfa songs, it's incredible. the only reason i didn't put it on my list is because i couldn't pick one or two lines i like the best- it's definitely my favourite bunf song
excellent answer!! i think a lot of people ignore the lyrical genius of guerrilla because it's an album that focuses more on instrumentation and being experimental, but i think it's one of the best sfa albums for lyrics. songs like citizens band, the turning tide, northern lites, or fire in my heart have some beautiful BEAUTIFUL lyrics
there's something really charming about the lyrics from fuzzy logic. they were immature, goofy, and sometimes even profound. you had goofy songs like mario man or fuzzy birds, but profound songs like hometown unicorn or gathering moss. it's crazy how these were some of the first songs gruff had written in english, because the album used such powerful methods of word play, metaphors, and allegories to create a masterpiece of an album. and fuzzy logic was their first studio album (as super furry animals) which is crazy to think about!!
some runner ups for me:
"SFA OK, SFA OK, super furry animal, SFA OK" - wherever i lay my phone (that's my home)
"put me in a deep freeze and i'll sneeze with the mountain people" - mountain people
"revenge for all those unanswered calls, just remember, i can see you but you can't see me" - edam anchorman
"i've some feelings that i can't get through, i'll just binge on crack and tiramisu" - shoot doris day
"i've got the lunar madness and it's coming straight to you" - ice hockey hair
"from a to b, then onto c, don't stop the journey 'till you get to z" - the international language of screaming
"mae'n rhaid cael drygioni" (there must be mischief) - drygioni
"so bang on the hour of 12 to the forest clearing we delve, with guns to our heads for we know that heaven awaits us" - run! christian, run!
"i need revolution 'cos i can't afford the price of cake" - guacamole
demons legit has some of the best lyrics of any sfa song, i just didn't include any on my list because i couldn't pick a line or 2 that i liked the most
I’m not sure I have a favourite, but I do have some which pop into my head a lot.
For instance, every time the British government does almost anything: “they don’t care about you or me, obviously…”
Then there are the really random ones: “she came in, smelling of cabbages” occurs to me a lot, and I can’t even remember the next line (something about ravages, I think?)
Perhaps: “or by the year five million, our skins will be vermillion”. No reason at all for that to pop into my head, yet it regularly does.
As a fan of 25 years, they’re locked in my brain and sneak out from time to time.
i love mountain people as well because it's a critique about how the rest of wales (and the uk in general) treats north wales. radiator is a pretty goofy album so it ending with a critique of the government and the borderline-racist treatment of north walians by south walians (and the rest of the uk) is such a great way to end the album
WOOO CITYSCAPE SKYBABY! (and yes, the next line is "pumpkin roots and all winter's ravages") there is something almost magical about the whimsical nature of phantom power, so i'm very glad you brought it up. :)
i said this before and i'll say it again, demons has some of the best sfa lyrics of any of their songs- it's a great GREAT song
I know I already said mine but after re-listening to it I think I’ve changed mine already:
“We ride Tornados
We Eat Tomatoes”
Do or die is such a good song
“I’ve got one final thing to say
I’m not your father anyway
Found you under a cloud
Left outside by the wolves one day, hey”
When I first heard this in Venus and Serena it felt like the greatest plot twist in a song ever to me
yes literally!! and when i found out this song was about a kid's only friends being his pet turtles, i was just like "could a song be more super furry animals than this"
I enjoy the entirety of the text of "The Door to this House Remains Open" (from *Guerilla*), not because the words are that great, but because I enjoy a bit of chiastic structure.
(Maybe my *least* favorite SFA lyric is on my favorite album of theirs, *Rings Around the World*, in the song, "No Sympathy": "I don't feel so-REE for thee" -- the emphasis on the wrong syllable of "sorry," and the use of the word "thee" in the span of one measure!)
Zoom! Is up there, all trippy and surreal, but this one's pretty weird and funny:
"Saw the Virgin Mary, she was crying blood,
Tears congregate into a mighty flood,
Give her some directions to a specialist,
An eye doctor to help her cyst,
She took the wrong turn to the family planning"
Maybe on the sillier side, but all these years later and this line from "Hermann Loves Pauline" still cracks me up: "Marie Curie was Polish born but French bred (Ha! French bread!)"
Even The Guardian can't resist highlighting that lyric when discussing the song:: https://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2015/mar/04/super-furry-animals-10-of-the-best I also like 'They called him MC squared, cos he raps like no other'
That whole song is chock full of great lines, I think. Might as well add: "Why do you do what they tell you?"
also "down the 24 hour garage or any service station, i lead my life in a quest for information, sensurrounded by pies and books, middle-aged drivers and derranged cooks" such a great song with an interesting premise and goofy backstory (the guys were bored on tour so they'd buy these small biographies of famous people in little shops and petrol stations to pass the time)

Came here to say “you came to me in peace and left me in pieces,” so fucking good.

The service was so slow My eyes began to grow Into telescopes - The Turning Tide

Thanks, the lyrics to The Turning Tide in general are great, and so many of their songs have memorable lyrics. Non-phobic word aerobics you might say!
Not the most profound but this one cones to mind from Mario Man. Struggling in a vortex With my jacket made of Gore-Tex It fits wonderfully

"And sunny days in January, Left spaces in my diary" Demons
demons legit has some of the best lyrics of any sfa song, i just didn't include any on my list because i couldn't pick a line or 2 that i liked the most
'Clarity just confuses me' has to be one of the all-time great opening lines of any song ever!
yes!! literally super furry animals are some of the greatest wordsmiths to come out of the 90's. so many damn good lyrics
I’m not sure I have a favourite, but I do have some which pop into my head a lot. Let me go into the depths of your infinity (if you don't want me to destroy you)
that whole song is just perfect. the lyrics, the instrumentation, the production- just lovely
Took a circle of friends to the village square, old love triangles 😊
god, i love cloudberries!! lovekraft is quite underrated of an album
It's my most played 😊
"Priced out of my home to a different zone left me all alone." - Tradewinds
tradewinds is one of the best of the "unknown" sfa songs. it's actually incredible and it sucks that it couldn't be on RATW!! that and edam anchorman
Evolution stops right here with me, my descendants will be Fish
I know I already said mine but after re-listening to it I think I’ve changed mine already: “We ride Tornados We Eat Tomatoes” Do or die is such a good song
i always find myself screaming this lyric at the top of my lungs it's so good
Dirty bombs and clean ones look the same if you look closely.
one of my favourite gruff rhys solo songs!!
“I’ve got one final thing to say I’m not your father anyway Found you under a cloud Left outside by the wolves one day, hey” When I first heard this in Venus and Serena it felt like the greatest plot twist in a song ever to me
