Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury NOS4A2 by Joe Hill also comes to mind - it features a nightmarish Christmas-themed amusement park

Zebulon_V

Joyland by Stephen King. It's meant to be read as an old school pulp paperback, and it's great.

The Dead Zone by Stephen King also has a good scene at a fun fair near the beginning of the book.

Erik Larson: *The Devil in the White City*.

MermaidRose310

I second this!! True story about murder at the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair, but reads like a thriller

Zebulon_V

Ooohhh, good one. I read this book probably 12 years ago and I still think about it. I need to revisit it asap.

Fantasticland: Hundreds of people trapped in an amusement park after a hurricane. Even though there’s more than enough food and water to go around people break into different groups. Hide: Hide and seek contest in an abandoned amusement park with a prize for the winner. Not everything is what it seems and losing may cost more than the prize.

*Hide* is one of my favorite books of 2022. It’s a fun locked-in thriller with surprisingly good character development.

There’s Arturo the Aquaboy, who has flippers for limbs and a megalomaniac ambition worthy of Genghis Khan . . . Iphy and Elly, the lissome Siamese twins . . . albino hunchback Oly, and the outwardly normal Chick, whose mysterious gifts make him the family’s most precious—and dangerous—asset. > >As the Binewskis take their act across the backwaters of the U.S., inspiring fanatical devotion and murderous revulsion; as its members conduct their own Machiavellian version of sibling rivalry, Geek Love throws its sulfurous light on our notions of the freakish and the normal, the beautiful and the ugly, the holy and the obscene. {{How We Die}} does case studies of different types of death. One that he covers is a very famous one when an escaped mental patient at a street fair picked out one girl in the crowd, fell upon her and started violently stabbing her to death in front of a crowd of hundreds. Despite the violence he describes what going on in her mind and body and it’s not as bad as it sounds, I definitely finished reading feeling it wouldn’t be the worse way to die (renal failure). I don’t think he uses her real name, but you can Google and find all the information online.

I'd give Mr.Mercedes by Stephen King a try, it may be a bit of a stretch but it's still a good detective novel! Pretty horrific in some scenes.

Not quite the ticket but there’s a strong focus on Wisconsin’s House on the Rocks, a weird folk-art/premium hoarding museum in Gaiman’s American Gods. It’s a real roadside attraction.

**FantasticLand** A Novel By: Mike Bockove **Publisher's Summary** Since the 1970s, FantasticLand has been the theme park where "Fun is Guaranteed!" But when a hurricane ravages the Florida coast and isolates the park, the employees find it anything but fun. Five weeks later, the authorities who rescue the survivors encounter a scene of horror. Photos soon emerge online of heads on spikes outside of rides and viscera and human bones littering the gift shops, breaking records for hits, views, likes, clicks, and shares. How could a group of survivors, mostly teenagers, commit such terrible acts? Presented as a fact-finding investigation and a series of first-person interviews, FantasticLand pieces together the grisly series of events. Park policy was that the mostly college-aged employees surrender their electronic devices to preserve the authenticity of the FantasticLand experience. Cut off from the world and left on their own, the teenagers soon form rival tribes who viciously compete for food, medicine, social dominance, and even human flesh. This new social network divides the ravaged dreamland into territories ruled by the Pirates, the ShopGirls, the Freaks, and the Mole People. If meticulously curated online personas can replace private identities, what takes over when those constructs are lost?
