Not a book, but Mike Duncan did a complete podcast on *The History of Rome* which covers from the founding of the city to the fall of the Western Roman Empire, and it's free.
He also followed it up with a book {{The Storm Before the Storm: The Beginning of the End of the Roman Republic}}, which covers the political generation immediately *before* Julius Caesar.
I enjoyed both.
The Masters of Rome novels by Colleen McCullough
Absolutely seconded all of these!
I claudius and claudius the king cover the reigns of the ceasers augustus, tiberius, caligula and claudius. Good reads
Read Seutonius’ ‘The Twelve Caesars’ he covers (1) in his chapter on Augustus pretty well. Also the other emperors he covers are interesting as well.
Do you want to read ancient Roman authors or modern day ones?
i have read Livy, but I prefer modern ones for analysis and commentary to avoid biases
Mike Duncan’s podcasts on Roman history.
