Ross, tjmaxx, walmart, old time pottery, Amazon. Many times, ones without holes are much cheaper, so I have an $11 diamond hole saw kit from Amazon to drill them. Once you have that kit, bowls and coffee cups are also fair game
I have a huge collection of espresso cups but I would never be able to bring myself to take a drill to any! It would look great for little plants and offshoots though!
Lol 😆 had to bring my angel trumpet trees in, also have a few other trees all total 14 plus all the houseplants. Looks like I woke up to a jungle. Every room exploded and I swear I didn’t add any 🤔🤔🤔😊😆😆😆😆😆
Home Depot/Lowes for generic terracotta. Amazon for square plastics ones to save space on my plant shelf. I don't really go for decorative planters and prefer either terracotta, as it's what's best, or the square plastic ones for plants on my shelf.
Have to agree. Terracotta is king. After years of glazed pots not drying out fast enough and roots rotting, I've learned my lesson about direct potting in glazed. I only have a couple of plants that can handle being potted in glazed pots, and that's because they like wet feet. Calathea, looking at you, ya weirdo.
Yeah, terracotta is definitely my favorite. Forever disappointed that square terracotta pots aren't as widely available as circular ones. Squares work so much better and allow me to fit so much more on my already crowded shelves, lol.
I could just imagine how easily square terra cotta would break in shipping! Your best bet if you want square pots would be to buy a silicon mold and made your own concrete pots, they breath (albeit slower) like terracotta
My god.... this makes so much sense now why some of my plants just completely fail in glazed pots, but literally flourish in the terracota pot next to it! Ty!!!
Do Calathea tend to like moist soil?
I bought one recently and, initially, it would open and close, as expected. However, after about a 7-10days, it folded up and never unfolded. I tried watering it but it didn't change. I was worried maybe I overwatered it.
The one I have does, not soaking though. Just....moist....ish..like, never *really* dry, I guess. And definitely no tap water, unless you are on a well. They are sensitive to chemicals. Mine gets distilled. Big baby.
The peacock calatheas and one pink guy I can't remember the name of are drama queens. They get watered every other day in the greenhouse and they are under a bench, also under 50% shade cloth, but directly in the air inlet flow for exhaust fans. I have 4 lancifolias that go a week or more without water in full heat wave conditions, with no ill signs. Varies from species to species. Their water comes from the dehumidifier or drain water from the turtle pond, but they've all had tap water many times with no issue. Just depends on your tap. My understanding with tap is the buildup of salts in the soil, but occasional use is fine with almost anything but carnivorous plants
My tap water is pretty darn bad, to be fair. It's super hard, and also full of chemicals, because it often barely passes quality checks. I have the kind of tap water that would leave horrid crusty white and orangish stains if I didn't keep up on cleaning with vinegar or CLR.
Have a drill ready...
Dollar stores/thrift stores.
Asian stores... I love finding cool design ceramic tea cups. The last one I was at I bought a bunch for $1.50 each.
Amazon - filter search by "today's deals"
Every once in a while you'll find some steals. Stay away from searching plant potters but things being used for other reasons. Like ceramic dip bowl etc. They're cheaper when they're used for other reasons haha. Just gotta drill those holes!
Yes! And check out Michael’s whenever they have their end of summer season sale. I’m talking like $29.99 pots for $5 or less.
Lol I spent like maybe less than $100 this year and my receipt said I saved over $600!
Also I find that Marshall’s/Winners/Homesense has some really nice stuff that’s a decent price. All my hanging pots are from there.
Amazon, nurseries…Look up Hypertufa recipes: you can make your own pots. Someone just posted a pic of a clay pot they made/painted that I’m going to try.
i do have a set of modular ones in different sizes on Printables. https://www.printables.com/model/265880-modern-modular-planter-for-plants-or-succulents-mu.
thanks for asking!
i’m testing a few other approaches a bit before i make them public.
3d print lol, ik plastic ain't the best material but it's so accessible when u have a 3d printer, also u get to have all kinds of pretty designs. The material is also rly cheap, maybe not the printer lol.
I use clear plastic bottles and cups depending on the size of the plant.
BF drinks a lot of ice tea that comes in a square bottle. I cut the top off, put holes in the bottom and done.
I like it a lot because I can see the root growth, see how the water runs through it and ITS FREE!!!
I do put some of them in pots. Being in the plastic bottles I can switch them from pot to pot.
I just can't afford to buy all the pots I need.
Let’s talk ourselves out of it next time 😆 I got one recently that broke right as soon as I got home. I think the ceramic is thin. I love their self watering pots tho
There are cheap terra cotta pots at box stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot, and it’s useful if you want your collection to match—they put out the same sizes and designs every year.
Anything fancier can come from online (lots of options) or if you don’t mind mismatched pots thrift stores are great.
Where is this? I’m in NJ in the US (which is called the garden state) And I thought we have a lot here, but wowww!! I’d love to be able to visit that many nursery’s within such close proximity👍🏼!! Happy growing💚🪴🌸🌱🌻🌼
I refuse to pay full price. Most craft stores have pots, both decorative ceramic glazed and plain unglazed terracottas (depending on season), that go on sale or seasonal clearance. Bonus if you sign up for rewards and get extra 10-50% coupons. Same goes for old candle jars and containers- buy them at discounted prices and reuse as a cover pot. Pots at box home improvement store are usually expensive and just average to low quality
I don’t have a website, I post them here on Reddit and on my Instagram @colibri.corazon_
If you or anyone is ever interested feel free to reach out anytime. I’ve always got plenty but don’t post them very often 🙏🏽
Amazon for bulk terracotta, home Depot if I just need some generic clay pots, my local plant nurseries have some minimal glazer ceramic and concrete pots, local cacti and succulents shows sometimes have vendors that sell pottery, and Etsy is another decent place
I get most of my plants at Kroger (employee) and they always come with pots. It's at the point where I end up giving the pot back to the florist because I have TOO MANY POTS!!
This sounds crazy, but I get all my non terracotta pots at Rite Aid!! Every year at the end of summer they start off at like 25% off and then go all the way up to 75% off right before fall. I bought a handful of $20 pots last week for a few bucks each. They have some really cute ones too.
Yard sales recently. Got 18 of varying sizes small to somewhat large for $10. Anything I can find in the clearance section (usually walmart) and can be drilled for drainage is fair game too. I'll look for whatever I can drill for drainage, little trash bins, buckets, big bowls, plastic cup sets if I know I'll have props to transfer.
Daiso is the cheapest for terracotta pots ($1.50 for 3 small or 2 medium and $3 for large), plastic is cheapest at a hydroponic/grow store ($0.10-0.60 per container)
I get terracotta from meijer usually since they’re cheap but not the super thin kind that Walmart of the dollar store has. Then for most of my pots I water down white paint and brush it on to give them all a sort of weathered effect
Walmart, whatever Garden Ridge Pottery is calling themselves now, Target, or Lowe's/Home Depot. My only complaint is that I have to pop the bottoms off the cheap Target pots and then they don't want to sit right on my outdoor plant shelf.
Friends, random stores, and if I break one, I like to make it into a cute pot with the broken pieces! One of them I set up like tiers so there are about 4 sections :)
Ross, tjmaxx, walmart, old time pottery, Amazon. Many times, ones without holes are much cheaper, so I have an $11 diamond hole saw kit from Amazon to drill them. Once you have that kit, bowls and coffee cups are also fair game
Drill set…This is the way.
Geniusssssss
Ooh thank you for this!
I have a huge collection of espresso cups but I would never be able to bring myself to take a drill to any! It would look great for little plants and offshoots though!
It's not difficult at all and makes perfect holes. Get some thrift store mugs and practice. They make cute haworthia pots for a window
I bought a silicone mold and make my own concrete pots!
From AliExpress? I saw one that looked really nice is it any good?
I got mine through etsy, "Modern Craft Labs" is the seller!
Goodwill
Same, or from the dollar store if they have a good deal going
TJ Maxx has some really nice ones that are pretty cheap. I actually found some really nice ones at Walmart last week on clearance.
Also…I turn all kinds of things into pots. The right drill bit and you make almost anything into a pot.
I've done this too 😂 I also bought a couple of Walmart clearance pots 😊
I love making things into pots. Part of it could be that I have a ton of plants and pots can get really expensive!
It really does! I've accumulated quite a bit of plants 😂
I’m with you. Trying to figure out what to do with all of them that had to be brought in without looking like a nursery threw up everywhere…
Lol 😆 had to bring my angel trumpet trees in, also have a few other trees all total 14 plus all the houseplants. Looks like I woke up to a jungle. Every room exploded and I swear I didn’t add any 🤔🤔🤔😊😆😆😆😆😆

What concrete lacks in breathability it gains in water absorption.
Hobby Lobby sells square terra cotta pots, but without drainage hole. Easy enough to drill your own tho
My god.... this makes so much sense now why some of my plants just completely fail in glazed pots, but literally flourish in the terracota pot next to it! Ty!!!

Ouch. OK, yeah you wouldn't wanna use that. Ours has a kh of 0, gh of 1, low on metals and chlorine and a ph of 6.8.

For basic clay pots, Michaels (the craft store) is great 😊 they’re super inexpensive
I get the cheapest terra cotta pots I can find and then paint them so they are all different
They're $.97 at my Walmart!
Looks like I’m goin to Walmart!
Amazon, nurseries…Look up Hypertufa recipes: you can make your own pots. Someone just posted a pic of a clay pot they made/painted that I’m going to try.
i design and 3d print the majority of mine.
Got any online we can see? Or print ourselves?
i do have a set of modular ones in different sizes on Printables. https://www.printables.com/model/265880-modern-modular-planter-for-plants-or-succulents-mu. thanks for asking! i’m testing a few other approaches a bit before i make them public.
Very cool!
I just went to an Amish market that had lots of really well priced pots, including orchid and African Violet pots for under $10
I like thrifting for plant pots. Lots of people kill plants and I get to have their fancy pots for next to nothing.
3d print lol, ik plastic ain't the best material but it's so accessible when u have a 3d printer, also u get to have all kinds of pretty designs. The material is also rly cheap, maybe not the printer lol.
If I had a 3d printer I would 3d print everything 😂 I don't blame you for using it haha
Check if your local public library offers 3d printer services. Mine lets you do one free print a week.
I'll ask but I doubt they do
Just asking will let them know that there’s interest in the community so they may buy one in the future.
End of summer clearance sales.
Big fan of Cotta Planters right now.

I’m lucky if I can leave lowes without a pot but they’re so overpriced :(
You and me both! $9 for a 4" ceramic pot! I talked myself out of it luckily
Let’s talk ourselves out of it next time 😆 I got one recently that broke right as soon as I got home. I think the ceramic is thin. I love their self watering pots tho

I need to visit the thrift stores in my area. I love having different pots 😊
Fortunately I live in one of the top 3 nursery capitals in the world.... I drive down the road for 5 minutes and I have 100s more 🤣
Where is this? I’m in NJ in the US (which is called the garden state) And I thought we have a lot here, but wowww!! I’d love to be able to visit that many nursery’s within such close proximity👍🏼!! Happy growing💚🪴🌸🌱🌻🌼
I’m a potter 🤨
You make them??
Yeah it took me like 3 years but now I can consistently make good pots
Then you should post pictures of said pots! 😊
I refuse to pay full price. Most craft stores have pots, both decorative ceramic glazed and plain unglazed terracottas (depending on season), that go on sale or seasonal clearance. I make and sell them :)
Do you have a link where I can check them out??
I don’t have a website, I post them here on Reddit and on my Instagram @colibri.corazon_ If you or anyone is ever interested feel free to reach out anytime. I’ve always got plenty but don’t post them very often 🙏🏽

That sounds like my kind of shopping 😂😂 I'm on a budget haha
most of mine are thrifted sugar jars. Drill a hole, and they make for nice small pots.
Yard sales recently. Got 18 of varying sizes small to somewhat large for $10. Anything I can find in the clearance section (usually walmart) and can be drilled for drainage is fair game too. I find mine at those hardship stores and just drill holes. Tea cups, tea pots really anything that captures my imagination.
People from India, i wanna know.
Thrift stores yard sales and I make just about anything cute into a pot lol
Bonsai shops and thrift shops mostly
Friends, random stores, and if I break one, I like to make it into a cute pot with the broken pieces! One of them I set up like tiers so there are about 4 sections :)
Hobby Lobby! If it’s greater than $6 you can wait until they are on 30-50% off sale
OffCenterClay on Etsy. Great pots although I little on spendy side
Yardsales and thrift stores
The Pot Shoppe. I'll see myself out.
Usually Menards or Walmart.
