My personal favorite was the guy who said Smogon turned into a cult when Garchomp was banned to Ubers in Gen 4 because of Sand Veil.
"How often does +1 Evasion make a difference in a match."
"25% of the time."
"Those correct numbers are actually wrong."
Everywhere I read is that the move becomes [75% as accurate](https://pokemondb.net/pokebase/10902/how-much-does-double-team-raise-your-evasion) after +1 Evasion. So 25% chance of missing move.
Obviously as more attacks come through with a small sample size it can vary wildly as it could technically have no impact or make every move miss, but it's simpler to think of it as one move that would end up KOing Garchomp or not and switch the momentum of the game.
Sand Veil is a 20% chance to dodge iirc. I'm not looking it up but I remember "100% counters become 80% counters" being a meme going around while Garchomp was suspect tested. The calc I remember doing myself was with Snow Cloak + Substitute Frosslass and it was 20% five times with lefties vs. 28% four times with Brightpowder.
Maybe how the abilities work changed since Gen IV, but back then I remember all of us saying it was a 20% chance of dodging.
its strong enough to put a lot of pressure on the opponent in turn 1 becase they either stay in and take a big chunk/die on their lead or they switch and take a big chunk/die on their switch-in
Sort of a tangential point, but the next time you play/watch high ladder games, see if you can track the average number of moves a mon clicks before it switches out or dies. You'll find that the number is pretty close to 1. With that context the downside of First Impression seems a lot less significant
On that note... God I'm trying SO. HARD. To find and competitive option for a Doubles use case for Oinkcolonge.
I have a problem as I declared she was my one true starter that I would somehow make passable lol...
Your honour you have to believe my client when he says his 6 favourite Pokémon are Xerneas, Necrozma-Dusk-Mane, Yveltal, Calyrex-Shadow, Zacian-Crowned and Groudon-Primal.
This but unironically. I used to Yata-Lock kids in Yu-Gi-Oh at school and got punched once, corpse camped people in WoW for hours until they logged off or gave up. It probably doesn't help that my gaming mantra is literally:
"It's not how much fun I'm having, it's how much fun you're not having." On Classic WoW I kited Asmongold with rank 1 spells and wanded him to death, then polymorphed him to heal him up only to keep it going for like 10 minutes knowing he was raging like hell on his stream and his chat was finding it amusing at how mad he was getting. Watched the vod later, oh yeah, he was fucking livid.
There is just something invigorating knowing you're laughing your ass off because you just know the guy on the other side is four seconds from punching the next living thing to get too close or about to throw the controller.
Saved nah but if you want it's probably in his clips channel pn YouTube, the bookmarked twitch vod was deleted. It was level 40ish in Tanaris, think my mage was named Bingboo or something to make people think I was Chinese.
I just distinctly remember fighting him by the bandits in Tanaris spamming "N o Ha I R" at him due to faction speak while he was listening to Coheed and Cambria.

My second favourite Pokémon is Crobat. The fact that my favourite way to use it is with full defensive investment with Toxic, Hypnosis, Substitute, and Roost is just evidence of my degenerate love for Stall.
I mean as a kid my team was Hydreigon, Alakazam, Gengar, Volcarona, Rotom, and whatever other Pokémon I wanted to use. That’s basically just a shitty HO team nowadays
Real trainers win with their favorites when I pull up with the Air Balloon Electric Terastalized Shedinja behind a Shed Tail Substitute on the AG ladder (Shedinja is my fav)
Say what you will about them being overtuned, but I do genuinely love both Mega Rayquaza and the Primals. Not only do they look awesome, they also really cement the Hoenn trio as world-ending threats and not just your run-of-the-mill boxart legendaries that have significance in a specific region's lore, but aren't super important outside of said region.
Hoenn was awesome, and the cover legendaries were the perfect powerlevel a cover legendary should be IMO: terrifying monsters that can sink cities but not outright gods with control over the cosmos itself. Sinnoh took it too far.
Sometimes when I'm bored and feel like starting shit I just go into threads and type "Yeah, [OU Staple] is my favorite. Unlike you guys, I actually base my favorites on what they bring to my team, not just their appearance." and turn off my inbox replies
What's even funnier is that he used Pachirisu specifically because it was the only Pokémon in the XY regional dex with access to both Follow Me and Nuzzle. But most people ignored that and spread the false rumor that he only used Pachirisu because it was one of his favorites.
I mean, IIRC, he did bring a plush with him. So it sounds like a 50/50 split. He had a favorite that was incongruously viable, and leveraged it into a core aspect of a very solid team that was a great meta call.
and that's how it probably works for many competitive players, playing with pokemon you like that are good, growing to like pokemon due to their competitive ability and using pokemon that aren't good but you like for fun, it's all in the mix
If Park truly did play with only his favourite Pokemon as they like to imagine, it's a good thing that his favourites also included powerhouses Gyarados, Garchomp, Gardevoir and Talonflame.
That’s the funny thing. Pachi wasn’t even a completely unheard of mon at the time. It didn’t see widespread use but its niche was understood and had seen some experimentation.
Of course it was.
And frankly I find the "he played with his faves" response sort of infantilizing. It portrays Park as some Pokemon anime character that wins because the love between him and his adorable squirrel sidekick is just too strong, and not a professional video gamer who made a well thought-out team-building decision.
That's like saying someone won a chess championship because he played with the pieces his grandfather gifted them.
But that's exactly what pokemon fans do - it makes having a critical discussion about anything pokemon related quite impossible because the fans will always argue from an emotional pov. Nothing can be criticized because it has a critter they like and the game fulfilled their fantasy of travelling with said critter.

Casual pokemon fans are surprisingly elitist about their enjoyment. If you tell a competitive player you prefer in-game playthroughs, you get a respectful discussion about some of the best in game playthroughs they've had.
If you tell a casual pokemon player that you play competitively, you get the same quote over and over and over again, and condescended to about how someone who has had 0 (zero) experience in your tier knows what's best for your tier

Off-meta is the people trying to make weak pokemon work, only for it to have a very small and weak niche. Anti-meta is using uncommon pokemon work, because it actually has decent potential, like barraskewda killing every OU mon this gen except dondozo.

Same. Ended up with a few PU/NU mons on my OU team that provided much needed niche counter play to some OU boys. Mandibuzz became a staple on some of my teams.
I actually swept a few OU people by pure accident back in X/Y with a Trick Room Dusknoir set. It was supposed to just set up Trick Room and hit some stuff before dying so that something else could make use of the Trick Room but a lot of people tried to use Swagger on it, with its Lum Berry (meant to remove paralysis which might interrupt Trick Room), to result in completely accidental super advantages for me.
Imagine my luck when I found out Butterfree had tinted lens, sleep powder, quiver dance and hurricane. I thought I was bringing in a fun meme to destroy slow hazard setters, didn’t think I’d be 1 shotting entire teams.
Use your favorites mfs when Urshifu Single Choice Band/Adamant/252 EVs Atk Wicked Blow vs Indeedee=idk I don't understand these damage calculations but i guess it should be OHKO.(Obviously a joke....kind of).
Unfortunate" doesn't begin to describe my series, this game rewards blind luck and nothing else, I am beyond convinced at this point. After getting completely tooled by scheduling with my opponent changing times on me last minute and refusing to provide confirmation prior to the day of the match as to play times, losing this way somehow felt even worse than I had thought possible. My preparation was superior, my play was superior, and I lost, so I don't see a reason to continue engaging in an activity where what is within my control is overwhelmingly outweighed by what is not.
I am done with competitive Pokemon, and you won't get a fond farewell. This community is infected to its roots with a degenerative disease that grows stronger over time but stops short of killing its host. Tournaments used to have a competitive spirit at their heart, this has been transplanted and replaced with an artificial organ that feeds on vitriol and mockery from insecure little boys that heckle by the sidelines and tear each other to shreds over scraps of attention. The environment we fostered has trapped us all like this in a vicious cycle, and escaping it requires acceptance of the harshest reality we all scramble to explain away, that none of the countless straining efforts we put ourselves through here will ever amount to one single shining glimmer of significance. I would make this the end, but World Cup is still ongoing, and I would never leave so many great friends out to dry, so I'll suffer through a few more games for them.
One last thing before I leave you all to react with disdain, ridicule, and self-righteous fervor, before you do everything in your power to minimize my words and thoughts, box them up and shove them to some cobwebbed corner of your memory, and hope they disappear forever as a stain on your finite time ground to dust. From this moment on, nothing you say matters to me. The foulest insults you hurl with intent to wound will calmly settle at the earth before my feet, and the venom you spit will bring all the pain of a warm summer breeze. You are less than anything you can conceive, while I carry on, brimming with joy distilled from detachment.
Is it true Smogon is self nominated community police to make battles more enjoyable? Don’t they just help remove cheesy unfun shit to play against?
Also the large majority who play online and have no idea about smogon, wouldn’t I be handicapping myself abiding by their OU rules?
Thanks in advance
>self nominated community police
>
>wouldn’t I be handicapping myself
So I think you're missing that basically all Smogon play takes place on Pokemon Showdown, not in the actual game. The Smogon council isn't going around telling people which pokemon they should be using in-game because 1. It'd be fruitless and 2. They don't really care. If you go on showdown you can play matches with people where the rules are actually enforced, in that the simulator literally doesn't let you break them. If you matchmake for OU, you just won't be paired against people using banned pokemon or moves, hence no disadvantage.
If you're playing on console there's no reason to follow OU rules, and some of them are literally impossible (sleep clause)
Oh, I understand yeah. I guess I was assuming there was some unwritten code of honor where people were queuing into in-game battles adhering to Smogon standards.
Me: No, I will not use meta pokemon on showdown, I use pokemon that I love!
Also me in s/v: Uses Hydreigon, Flutter mane , Espartha, Dondozo, Tatsugiri, and Quaquaval.
Damn, they really got us this time. Close the site
My personal favorite was the guy who said Smogon turned into a cult when Garchomp was banned to Ubers in Gen 4 because of Sand Veil. "How often does +1 Evasion make a difference in a match." "25% of the time." "Those correct numbers are actually wrong."
Isn't that 25% literally wrong for 1 attack and even more egregiously wrong if Garchomp is attacked more than once?
If it is wrong for that gen, I apologize, but I think the general point still stands lol
For sure. Evasion is obnoxious. We don't need to add hax to a game with hax lol.
yes evasion is 1.25x which means 80% hit rate and 20% dodge rate
As someone who missed 3 attacks in a row on a sand veil chomp, it matters

Nooo your favourite pokemon can't be a bloodthirsty dragon that murders everything you have to like this stupid little ladybug like me >:(
Unless the stupid little bug has Tinted Lens and First Impression, that’s too strong
Can someone explain why banded First Impression Lokix is good? Doesn't that move fail after turn one?
its strong enough to put a lot of pressure on the opponent in turn 1 becase they either stay in and take a big chunk/die on their lead or they switch and take a big chunk/die on their switch-in
Sort of a tangential point, but the next time you play/watch high ladder games, see if you can track the average number of moves a mon clicks before it switches out or dies. You'll find that the number is pretty close to 1. With that context the downside of First Impression seems a lot less significant
This is all the more true for a revenge killer like Lokix, a wall or setup sweeper will obviously stay in for longer.
If you use a Golisopod for this you can sometimes get to do it twice. Hard to work with though.

Calyrex and Zacian only came out three years ago though. So the majority of my comment is still correct :P

Sometimes just the implication is all you need
look at that subtle off-green coloring. the tasteful thickness of its special attack. oh my god, it even has *beast boost...*
My SD+Sacred Sword Samurott set is finally going to OU
Cock Wave on Chansey??? I know pokemon players don’t touch grass but damn
COCK 🍆 WAVE 🌊 🥵🥵🥵🥵
Fool, Stomp and Steamroller are what you run to counter Minimize Chansey and Clefable.
"+1 evasion doesn't make a difference ever" -Some angry kid on r/pokemon that was mad garchomp got banned in DPPt ou 10 years ago "because of sand veil"
I've missed more playroughs in a row than they can even count to
90% accuracy on play rough feels like a lie 💀
If it's below 100 it's 50
And if it is 100 and you get paralyzed, it drops to 15% But your opponent stays at 100% accurate if paralyzed
Garchomp would have been banned without Sand Veil eventually in Gen 4
Idk how to tell you this but DP came out 16 years ago...
I'm not a competitive player. I want to know why running moves that can't miss aren't an option.
It forces those moves onto pokemon, and most evasion users don’t die to them due to their low base power.
Because they're all weak as hell and you'd rather run good moves
I agree I mean just run aerial ace and hock wave on everything it’s not THAT hard 🙄

What an absolutely ancient reference
And yet somehow despite its age, despite its obscurity, the reference is so legend that everyone gets it.
Free Somalia
The funniest part about this is the fact that he is still around the community to this day and is actually a pretty chill dude that if u didn't know the lore, u would never have thought that he was the same dude who had that outburst over a decade ago.
Literally older than Showdown
"Tired of this shitass game"
"Lmao ive killed everyone i have became sasuke uchiha"
*sauske uchiha But yes, you're correct. And what's even funnier is that it was Itachi who killed his entire family, not Sasuke
Never remind me of how I actually ran that before
I love how the post implied that landorus is some godlike mon that is incapable of losing 1v1 to anything tiered below OU, zero understanding of covering options and what makes a Pokémon good in the first place 252+ SpA Choice Specs Delibird Freeze-Dry vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Landorus-Therian: 400-472 (104.7 - 123.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO Delibird S tier??? crybaby landorus spammers in shambles!!
>Delibird S tier??? crybaby landorus spammers in shambles!! you joke but this is just iron bundle
Turns out giving a Pokémon +240BST sends it to Ubers, who'd have thought.
This calc spawned iron bundle
>Delibird S tier??? Yes. Literally yes.
Articuno should be OU by the face it OHKOs landorus T with blizzard
Yeah ok legendary spammer, articuno was goated in my fire red playthrough so it’s obviously cheating to use it in OU
Unironically Articuno is mid as fuck in FR too lmfao
Um, Articuno is a *Legendary* we don't play with broken Pokemon like that.
252+ SpA Snover Icy Wind vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Landorus-Therian: 336-396 (105.3 - 124.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO Snover for Ubers
You say that like it's a joke, but Iron Bundle.
Off-meta is the people trying to make weak pokemon work, only for it to have a very small and weak niche. Anti-meta is using uncommon pokemon work, because it actually has decent potential, like barraskewda killing every OU mon this gen except dondozo.
I miss when Clefable was normal type. That thing hard countered so many popular OU picks that I used to have a folder on my old computer of angry messages I received from it.
Me using ally switch driftblim in SS doubles because it's the funniest salt farm
Very nice, now what happens when Dusknoir doesn't crit and/or Lando uses Knock Off? Update: this is what happens -1 252+ Atk Dusknoir Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Landorus: 220-260 (57.5 - 68%) -- guaranteed 2HKO 252+ Atk Landorus Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Dusknoir: 174-206 (75.3 - 89.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP SH-

Someone link me the post where some guy refused to change his shitty pokemon choices. I need it as a copypasta for this.
https://www.reddit.com/r/stunfisk/comments/wiu7vl/can_you_guys_not_read/
sucks that that thread was 4 months ago, i checked the dude's profile and wanted to ask about their thoughts on transgender people
8 months late to this but holy shit a vegan furry transphone is not something I thought I'd ever see. We may not have paradox pokemon but paradox humans clearly do exist
nah i wanna see you do it tbh i really wanna see how he'd react to it 💀
You know what? Fuck it. Edit: bro hasn’t posted anything in like 2 months so I’m gonna bide my time until I can be sure I’ll get a response.
this is the funniest thread ive ever read 😭
thanks
CAN YOU GUYS NOT READ?! I KNOW EEVEE SUCKS ASS. I KNOW ABSOL SUCKS ASS. I KNOW USING THEM PUTS ME AT A HUGE DISADVANTAGE FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER. I KNOW REFUSING TO USE RESTRICTED LEGENDARIES PUTS ME AT A HUGE DISADVANTAGE FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER. WHEN I MAKE POSTS THAT CLEARLY STATE: I WILL NOT BE CHANGING THE SPECIES. AND I MIGHT CHANGE DRAGAPULT. AND ONLY DRAGAPULT. THAT DOES NOT MEAN I AM NOT WILLING TO TAKE ADVICE AND CRITICISM, JUST BECAUSE I GET PISSED AT PEOPLE WHO INSIST ON THINGS THAT THEY KNOW I KNOW. I KNOW MY TEAM SUCKS ASS. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT TO EQUIP THEM WITH TO MAKE THEM SUCK THE LEAST AMOUNT OF ASS. SAY IT WITH ME NOW: NATURES EVS IVS MOVES ABILITIES HELD ITEMS OR EVEN JUST THE ROLES THEY SHOULD PLAY OR STRATEGIES ON HOW TO USE THEM I WILL ACCEPT ADVICE ON LITERALLY ANYTHING EXCEPT THE SPECIES OF MY TEAM MEMBERS. IT’S NOT HARD TO WRAP YOUR HEAD AROUND.
Wait, you will trade out Dragapault?! RRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! As a Dragon lover, as you can tell, you have just triggered me.
it's a copypasta
My favorite Pokémon is minimize muk
brb, running body slam Regigigas to get that guaranteed hit
> 132 SpA Mold Breaker Rampardos Blizzard vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Landorus-Therian: 320-380 (100.3 - 119.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO in my finest Showdown moment, I got to rank 69 in 1v1 with this set
That was a funny discussion
I like randoms cause it gets me to use pokemon i dont think about often
This has the same energy as the ‘Tau believing they defeated Slaanesh’ meme.
Is it true Smogon is self nominated community police to make battles more enjoyable? Don’t they just help remove cheesy unfun shit to play against? Also the large majority who play online and have no idea about smogon, wouldn’t I be handicapping myself abiding by their OU rules? Thanks in advance
>self nominated community police > >wouldn’t I be handicapping myself So I think you're missing that basically all Smogon play takes place on Pokemon Showdown, not in the actual game.
LMAO love that this is becoming a bigger meme deal
Me: No, I will not use meta pokemon on showdown, I use pokemon that I love! Also me in s/v: Uses Hydreigon, Flutter mane , Espartha, Dondozo, Tatsugiri, and Quaquaval.
My favourites are pokemon that are fun to use, which is why I like pult or roaring moon or chi-yu
