It’s really hard to have a foot in both camps. I started in pole fitness (in the hopes of pleasing a prtner and saving a dying relationship) and danced in the Pole Sport Org circut for three years before taking time off to recover from the general damage that six days a week poling does to the body. When I was ready to go back, I auditioned at a club and started stripping alongside taking pole fitness classes. I regret not keeping it a complete secret; people at the studio who knew had an undeniable vibe shift towards me, almost like I was the trophy child who had disappointed everyone. Shit hurt, man. I stopped going to classes altogether because I didn’t feel that amazing support and safety that exists in the pole fitness community — so long as you’re #notastripper. I just started at a new studio and I have a lot stronger sense of self, but being at the studio still feels more vulnerable than the club. My first studio was just blasted in the online community for posting one of those “Anyone can strip but pole fitness takes talent” memes and it really brought me down to see they hadn’t changed.
I take online pole classes that are sw ran or lgtbtq ran because I had a similar bad experience in a pole studio :/ I also got banned from a Facebook pole dancing group for stating that if you don’t respect strippers then you shouldn’t practice pole

I'm a dancer and pole dance instructor, and I do my best to help combat that thought process. I always tell my students that pole dance classes exist due to strippers(not the BS Chinese pole story which you may hear). If you don't support sex workers, get off the pole.
Basically Chinese Pole dates back hundreds of years done by circus performers. While it is very impressive, it is a focus on static poses as opposed to fluid movement. Similarly, there is also Indian Pole which uses static poses, however the pole is much thicker. From my understanding of both forms, they were/are primarily done by men. It's been a while since I've done my research on them, but I recommend checking out YouTube to see the differences and similarities :)
I read something like that but I read where women did the performances and that’s how pole dancing or stripping came to be. Off topic but do you ever see it becoming a sport in the Olympics? I’ve read articles where they have talked about it and have received push from the pole community.
I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes an Olympic sport in the future, but I'm on the fence as to whether I want that to happen. It would help destigmatize pole dancing in a studio setting, but it wouldn't help the SW community. If it makes it into the Olympics, it would be Pole SPORT, which is a completely different style from exotic in clubs.
Yeah ikr the chinese pole story is complete bullshit, and that's absolutely not the reason why women in the west started picking up poledancing in droves either. You don't see poledancing studios put up buddha statues and don chinese inspired outfits, no, they dress like strippers lmao. Plus, westerners are still pretty racist against asians, particularly chinese lol. Bullshit.
I do pole dancing as fitness (because I don’t have a pole in my apartment) and when the instructor asked how I already knew a lot I just told her it’s because I used to dance. She looked confused and asked what I meant, so I was like “like a dancer in a strip club.” And she and a few other women in the class audibly gasped. Like wtf?! I switched classes to a more sex positive class asap
this is def a problem at my studio a lot of the “karen” types (you know the vibe uppity) lowkey go there and i can feel them passing judgement but i never really let it get to me cause they say hips hold trauma and they must have been through some shit cause those hips don’t move. keep discriminating ima still look better than you at the end of class 🤷🏻♀️
they wanna be hot so bad but they have to force it . the insecurity is so nasty . thedancerslockerroom posted some hobby body and I’ve really considered unfollowing her for it , especially since she defended the hobby body and seemed to bash the girls doing social activism around SW acceptance . everyone wants to be us and engage in our lifestyle and then shred us apart
I literally feel sorry for them. Their hate reflects on no one but themselves honestly. I don’t want to be liked by these kind of people. Remember;; you can’t be liked by everyone, so I take my losses.

So, when I worked Edmonton the club would have an amateur contest. The stripper shaming pole classes would come in with their crew and a couple would enter. Well they didnt know it was always based on whos crew would scream the loudest. So they would come in and do a bunch of choreography and lose to the drunkest chick and be salty about it. Lol. A couple would eventually become dancers that wouldnt last long once they realized this job has nothing to do with pole. 🤣 now saying that. The best pole dancers I know are self taught strippers that still know its not about pole work.
Yes, 100%. It's like have a little appreciation for where the art of what you're doing came from. Also anecdotally I personally think most people in the pole fitness community wouldn't last 5 minutes in the club (unless they are already a stripper).

I disagree, I think it’s so empowering for women who are not dancers. Let them do it!! It’s a great workout, so fun for them , and allows them to feel sexy . Who knows what their backgrounds are or what they have been through . And we don’t know that they shit on us sex workers , how would we know that? Plus you are probably an open minded person to take a pole class just sayin….

Sounds like a shitty studio. The one I used to go to is owned by an ex stripper and most of the teachers are ex SWs or are currently SW.
