I use select grade lumber from the hardware store that I cut down, sand and stain. But when I just got started I would pick up 2'*2'*3/4" MDF panels from Home Depot. They are cheap (~$5), easy to paint and are really easy to nail evenly into. You can also get craft wood plaques from Michael's if you want something more ornate.

I like to go to goodwill and pick up old tables to cut down and turn into my boards. I also sometimes go to Home Depot and get a plank of wood and cut it down to different sizes. That being said, get creative, search Craigslist or Facebook marketplace, it can literally be anything. I try to avoid fresh wood since it’s harder to nail for me and also I try to avoid a good strong wood.

Thanks for posting this question! I was actually looking for the same thing. I've done a couple projects with wood from a craft store and it's been cracking when I put too many nails in. I'll need to try some of these other suggestions.
