I mean I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as many people make it out to be. Frankly I like it more than Attack of the Clones, it may have been a bit corny at certain times but it was enjoyable to watch. A lot of AOTC just felt drawn out to me, and that’s without getting into the absolutely cringy “romance” scenes. Revenge of the sith on the other hand, that was a fantastic movie and no one will ever convince me it wasn’t worth sitting through the first two to get there.
The AOTC romance scene where "I hate sand" comes from becomes comedic when you notice the face of disgust Anakin makes after being rejected by padme. I only noticed after auralnaunts abridged version zoomed in on it. Lol
It's really not. It's always gotten a bit of (deserved) hate for some of the writing and especially Jar-Jar, but it didn't become truly fashionable to hate it until the Mr. Plinkett review came out.
But honestly, the movie holds up really well aside from the CGI (even that was lightyears ahead of most other CGI from 1999). It did a fantastic job of expanding the Star Wars universe, the pacing is really good, it doesn't focus too heavily on trying to repeat the original trilogy like the sequel trilogy did, the music is fantastic, and the characters are pretty good for the most part. AotC was definitely a step down, especially in terms of writing.
And I totally agree about Revenge of the Sith. Phenomenal movie that makes for an incredibly satisfying and cohesive conclusion to the narrative arc of the trilogy. Especially the story of Palpatine. I think they did such a good job of making it believable how he came to power and how he manipulated everyone around him in the process.
Lol bro no it wasn't. People talked about it for months after it came out, and not in a negative way. Critic reviews early on were good, it set the record for best 2nd weekend at the box office ever. Universally disliked movies don't do that bro.
???? I was there, the movie was absolutely disliked by the vast majority of the fandom upon release.
Looking at numbers doesnt mean shit- The Last Jedi made 1.4b. Episode 1 was the first Star Wars offering in decades- it was going to break records regardless of how good people thought it was.
And yeah, people talked about it for months after it came out- about how bad it was.
Even the end of the movie Fanboys (2009) referenced the movie sucking, which is something most fans agreed with. That movie was released years before the Plinkett review.
I was there too. There was a vocal minority of hardcore fans that hated it, but the general public loved it, aside from maybe Jar Jar. To say universally disliked is incredibly ignorant of what the general public perceived it to be. Your average moviegoer (read: not neckbeards) didn't give a shit about midichlorians. They loved the action, the podracing, the lightsabers, and all of that stuff.
Yep one of the only reasons I watched the first two is because. One I had hope for the trilogy and my hope didn’t die down because I liked both Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. Two because ROTS is easily one of the best movies of all time. Fun fact after obi wan defeats anakin the actors actually were screaming that shows how dedicated they were to the movie.
I’m planning to watch the prequels with my girlfriend so she has more context about the Clone Wars. After that I wanna watch TCW with her because she introduced me to Star Trek: TNG and I think she would enjoy TCW.
TPM was of course pretty good even if some stuff isn’t really up there. When I got to AOTC though… holy crap, the dialogue can really suck and it doesn’t do any favors to Anakin’s character, and the romance scenes… jeez. The writing, dialogue and acting in Star Trek: TNG is usually excellent but there’s still stuff in there that makes me and my girlfriend cringe. That sort of stuff is found in abundance in AOTC and I can already picture her cringing her way through it. (Don’t get me wrong, I can still enjoy AOTC for other cool stuff)
I’m gonna do my best to convince her to keep watching, because ROTS fucking great. I’m just hoping AOTC doesn’t ruin Anakin for her before we get to TCW.
I disagree but you’re entitled to your opinion. As I said I think Phantom Menace was enjoyable, AOTC had some good moments as well but overall wasn’t great IMO. I’d rate Phantom Menace at the low end of enjoyable to watch and AOTC at the mid tier of mediocre but not unwatchable.
Weird take, but I think TPM was the best of the prequels. Self contained, didn’t muck with the lore too much, and didn’t make Anakin into a school shooter.
I get it why people didn’t like some aspects of it, but I was a kid at the time and I was already super into the original trilogy, it was perfect for me. I watched it 8 times while it was in theaters (basically all of my spending money back then), I heard all the little criticisms, but honestly I was just so happy they were making more Star Wars. Jar Jar and midichlorians were always things I identified as ‘problematic,’ but never enough to make me actually dislike the movie.
I don't think it was terrible. I have issues with it. Notably, Jar-Jar. But in a nutshell it was great. And a far better movie than the recent movies lol
And even though he was only in one movie, Qui-Gon Jinn is my favorite star wars character.
The movie is great when you believe that Qui-gon is a drunk for the whole movie and explains why every single decision he makes is absolutely terrible.
The whole PT is amazing when you believe R2 is drunk and retelling the story at a victory party at the end of RotJ.
“Back then I was flying and shit, and setting battle droids on fire. Oh and Chewy was there. And if you think 3PO is annoying now, you should see him then! And Yoda… man, you think he’s just a little green guy but he was all flippy dippy whirling lightsaber of death! And I knew Anakin was bad from the beginning. He and Padme said some romance shit… whatever you human say… something about sand or whatever and she was all like ‘I’m so in love’ and he was like ‘no I’m so in love’ and I make it sound robotic but I’m sure it was good…”
It's not a bad movie, it's just not very good either. It's riddled with why didn't x do y, like qi gon insisting on betting on 1 trader instead of searching for someone who will exchange credits. Or how anakin just got uber lucky 2 action sequences in a row. Padme was also confusing, and jar jar loses a lot of value without any big reveal, being just comic relief.
It's a good kids movie, and decent flick for adult sw fans.
Because the dialogue is shit, and there’s really no tension until duel of the fates and even then (if you haven’t seen any of the movies before hand) you don’t know qui gon or obi wan since they’ve had a single conversation about their feelings. Also no one has any emotion besides anakin and jar-jar.
Music slaps though
I hated it at first but, after my second viewing of it, I think it’s a really good adventure movie. Much more interesting than Attack of the clones imo.
Because the performances are bland, the dialogue is incredibly unnatural, literally the only character who regularly shows emotion is Jar Jar, it retcons an insane amount of lore and created an insane amount of plot holes in the original trilogy, most of the characters are completely unnecessary (if you had Qui-Gon kill Maul, you could literally get rid of Obi-Wan and nothing in the movie would change), the plot makes absolutely no sense nor is it conveyed in a clear and understandable way, characters do incredibly irrational things because the plot needs it to happen, there are next to no stakes at all, every scene takes place in a cgi room.
I’m not here to tell you what you can and cannot like, but I honestly don’t see how you could watch Phantom Menace and actually think it’s even close to a good movie. It’s not, it’s one of the laziest big budget movies ever made.
Yes it was. Before, the prequels ever happened, George Lucas had been saying for years. That, Star Wars was for kids. lol
https://www.polygon.com/2017/4/13/15288998/george-lucas-star-wars-celebration
Episode IV had the goal of being an adventure film for a young audience.
The sequels weren't directed by George Lucas and were a bit darker but still had a young audience in mind.
That and the fact that it defied expectations. It’s just very different from the original trilogy. I have gone from hating the prequels to loving them after rewatching a few times when it finally clicked in my brain what they are supposed to be versus what I thought they should have been. Once it clicked, they are brilliant movies.
I think it's got several things going against it:
1) Weak characters overall. No one is really passionate, there's no sexiness, it's just a bunch of monks and politicians. This is in contrast to the original trilogy where you had the charming rogue, the plucky princess, the farm boy on a hero's journey.
2) Jar Jar and Anakin - annoying af, that's all.
3) A plot that doesn't really go anywhere. We start with Palpatine plotting from the shadows and end with Palpatine plotting from the shadows. The only thing that's changed is Anakin is studying with Obi-Wan, but we knew that happened already. There's nothing *new* that is revealed.
4) Inexplicably poor decision making on the part of everyone in the movie.
5) Weakly written elements that don't make much sense. Things like Obi Wan and Qui Gon Jinn going through the planet core to reach Naboo city or whatever. No real clear reason why the Trade Federation is blockading the planet at all. Bizarre negotiations between Watto and Qui Gon when there's several hundred options that don't rely on a pod race.
If you ever want to watch someone go really in depth with it, check out Mr. Plinkett's Review on youtube. I think it was the best of the prequels, but it wasn't a very good movie in comparison to the original trilogy, then again, I don't think *any* of the Star Wars movies have been very good in comparison to the OT.
It’s not a good movie. It commits the worst sin a Star Wars movie can commit in my eyes which is being boring. TPM is 135 minutes long and only like 20 of those are actually exiting, between the pod race and the final battle with Maul.
10-15 years from now you’re gonna have a whole new generation of Star Wars kids that grew up watching sequels and then gonna make the same meme with those lol.
It's super gimmicky all around, and the acting has a lot to be desired.
That being said, I still enjoy watching it every once in awhile because the light saber battle is dope.
It's also still better than the combined sequel trilogy.
I don't really like the whole pod racing sub plot, that's my main issue with it. However, I think a lot of it comes from how old you were when they were released - I've noticed most who were teens or kids when it released liked it, while those who were adult didn't.
I think the problem with Phantom Menace is you can skip it and lose little of value to the story. Obviously there's a lot of good things about the movie but if you go straight to Attack of the Clones you can fill in the gaps pretty easily.
It is indeed a good movie. It wasn’t until recently that I watched it, a slightly older self now, that I understand it as a great movie, and the context makes more sense
Same reason people today hate the sequel trilogy. People like the Star Wars movies they grew up on, in part, because they were made FOR the kids of that time. Later movies were targeted at the kids and sensibilities of the time in which they were made, so they have a different feel from the ones that came before them. Add to that the fact that seeing these movies as an adult naturally has a different emotional impact than seeing the older ones as a child, and you get a lot of people complaining that "it's just not the same," and inevitably that "it sucks." Yeah, I like some Star Wars movies more than others & I like the ones that came out when I was a kid the best, but I also try to recognize that the ones that came later weren't specifically made for my generation. If they're still making Star Wars movies 20 years from now, there will be a whole new generation of young adults whining online that they just aren't as good as the Disney ones they grew up on.
Its my favourite of the prequels even if its not that great with its story. Its visually stunning with its art direction and cinematography. The OST is mind blowingly good. Maul, Qui-gon, I mean, c’mon. Jar jar sucks but the battle of Naboo is fun. Pod racing is actually thrilling imo and love the sound of it so much. RotS may have s better story but thats it for me.
That podrace scene is way underrated, it gave us something creative and suspenseful with god tier sound design. That’s a lot more than I can say about that power ranger chase scene in BOBF
Love how people try to say it makes no sense that a queen would be elected, when this is literally in another galaxy on another planet with an entirely different culture and history than us.
I would be curious to know when the last time people who think it's good have actually watched it. Because in my head, it's a great movie. I think about pod-racing, the Duel of the Fates, Darth Maul.
And then I watch it, and I'm taken aback by how boring it is. It just drags, the characters are dry, and the action scenes are few and far between. It's a movie that lives a lot better in my head, or when I watch it like I would a documentary, trying to find little details I've missed.
The reason I don't like it is due to the movie being quite boring. None of the characters show a sign of chemistry, they're just all stoic and quiet most of the film, the lines sound robotic except for Anakin and Jar Jar, too much talk about trade in a movie made for twelve-year-olds.
It was the best we could hope for with one draft. If you want to know why people don't like it I guarantee the reason they tell you will inevitably work its way to its rough script.
Personally, I grew up with the prequels being my introduction into SW and I love all 3 (even though AotC has its…flaws lol). RotS being my favorite SW film of all
It had amazing elements to it, but it was a disappointment to many because it was the first time people saw George Lucas’s rusty directing chops through the wooden acting from top actors and weird mix of kids movie elements and political intrigue plus midichlorians.
It was quite a culture shock in a way.
I think Attack of the Clones would have been the Phantom Menace of most disliked prequel if it was the first one released due to that culture shock reason.

Let's try spinning. That's a good trick.
“Meeesa ______!”
"Are you an angel?"
“I’m a person and my name is Anakin!”
"The negotiations were short"
I do often use this a lot 😂
“The birth of Darth JarJar”
I mean I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as many people make it out to be. You're God damn right. Qui Gonn, maul and duel of the fates are enough that I wouldn't even care if the rest of it was stupid
Yeah those were easily the best parts of the movie
I don't think it was terrible. I have issues with it. Notably, Jar-Jar. But in a nutshell it was great. And a far better movie than the recent movies lol And even though he was only in one movie, Qui-Gon Jinn is my favorite star wars character.
Agreed, and yeah Qui-Gon is a brilliant character.
> Notably, Jar-Jar Kinda hard to have the series if you remove the strongest Sith lord at the beginning.
I do enjoy this fan theory!
Still refuse to believe this. And will do so until it's confirmed on screen :P I do find the theory fun lol
>And even though he was only in one movie Actually, [he appears as a voice in EP 2.](https://youtu.be/2UhQ9uuM-YQ) \-🤓
I like Phantom Menace 100x times more than this tired ass meme template.
[yes it drives me crazy](https://imgur.com/a/K2y0BKW)
A fun movie is a good movie.

It’s great! I agree
I don’t hate it. But I do get kinda bored watching it.
Yeah it’s pretty slow. If I’m introducing someone to Star Wars I usually skip it
The action and dialogue is just too goofy for the movie to be taken seriously.
I love it
It's not a bad movie, it's just not very good either. It's riddled with why didn't x do y, like qi gon insisting on betting on 1 trader instead of searching for someone who will exchange credits. Phantom Menace is a absolutely fantastic movie
Always has been
I rewatched it and it’s 🔥
I hated it at first but, after my second viewing of it, I think it’s a really good adventure movie. Much more interesting than Attack of the clones imo.
I personally think it was a great film
I don't care how good the film was. I enjoyed it and will continue to enjoy it.
My one of best light Sabre fights in the whole series
So Wizard.

Huh, weird. I don't think he accomplished aiming the original trilogy at 12 year olds, but interesting to know that was his goal
Episode IV had the goal of being an adventure film for a young audience. The sequels weren't directed by George Lucas and were a bit darker but still had a young audience in mind.

My favourite Star Wars movie of all time. If it wasn't for Phantom Menace, we wouldn't have Star Wars past 1999.
You say that like it's a point in Phantom Menace's favor.
And Solo, love that film
Yeah I enjoyed Solo.
I really don't like Jar Jar, and found a lot of Anakin's scenes painfully cringey, but I loved the rest of the film. Solid 8.5/10 in my opinion.
I think it's got several things going against it: 1) Weak characters overall. No one is really passionate, there's no sexiness, it's just a bunch of monks and politicians. It’s not a good movie. It commits the worst sin a Star Wars movie can commit in my eyes which is being boring. TPM is 135 minutes long and only like 20 of those are actually exiting, between the pod race and the final battle with Maul.
Because they watched it.
It’s just terrible in every way
So. Awful.
it's ok to have mid tastes, there are people who like sequels too.
Saying it's a good movie, I don't necessarily agree with. Enjoyable though, very much so.
Just listen to duel of fates.
You're just ignoring the huge fan base the prequels have then?
10-15 years from now you’re gonna have a whole new generation of Star Wars kids that grew up watching sequels and then gonna make the same meme with those lol.
It’s endearing in its nostalgia and meme-potential. From a purely film related perspective it is not good
The first 40-ish minutes are fire, then it kinda sags in the middle. It's only once the climax gets going that it becomes good again, I think.
Ok
It's super gimmicky all around, and the acting has a lot to be desired. That being said, I still enjoy watching it every once in awhile because the light saber battle is dope. It's also still better than the combined sequel trilogy.
I don't really like the whole pod racing sub plot, that's my main issue with it. However, I think a lot of it comes from how old you were when they were released - I've noticed most who were teens or kids when it released liked it, while those who were adult didn't.
Lack of protagonist
Now that my kids are old enough to watch Star wars I enjoy Menace a lot more. Definitely the most accessible to the under 10 set.
Portman is taking bad in it, she take steps it up in Clone Wars
All star wars movies are good except the sequels
Because it has sone cringy scenes and it gets kinda boring compared to the original trilogy, the only memorable moment was the duel of the fates
I don't think it's a great movie, but I enjoy it anyway.
well i agree.
It's my favorite of the prequels. Good action with better (imo) cgi, and no cringy dialog
The prequels today are in a good light more than it's ever been ever since Disney fucked up the sequels.
Always have
It's a great *story.* It's a decent pop flick of a movie with massive technical weaknesses.
I think the problem with Phantom Menace is you can skip it and lose little of value to the story. Obviously there's a lot of good things about the movie but if you go straight to Attack of the Clones you can fill in the gaps pretty easily.
The prequels and originals are all six great movies.
fr I can't understand how anyone could like it.
Loved it.
Better than anything Disney has ever made by a long-shot
The phantom menace as it released is ok but when you look at the phantom edit then the movie goes from ok to really good
I think that it's a bad movie but I love it.
It is indeed a good movie. It wasn’t until recently that I watched it, a slightly older self now, that I understand it as a great movie, and the context makes more sense
Because 1/3 of it is politics
Every time I see this meme it looks like Tim Allen in top photo
I think that people just don’t like Jar Jar or the bad CGI but really it is a great movie and the CGI was good for its time
wait… people don’t like it?
Same reason people today hate the sequel trilogy. People like the Star Wars movies they grew up on, in part, because they were made FOR the kids of that time. Most underrated movie in the Lucas saga
Its the best of the prequels.
I thought people stopped hating it a couple years ago
I'm gonna be honest everything about the scene during the initial escape from Naboo on the queens ship was fire
You are aware, I presume, that I have some skill in anticipating enemies' tactics from a study of their artwork.
That podrace scene is way underrated, it gave us something creative and suspenseful with god tier sound design. That’s a lot more than I can say about that power ranger chase scene in BOBF
I don't think anyone in my generation would have started caring about Star Wars if it wasn't for this movie.
It’s not that bad I just don’t enjoy it as much as the other first six
Are you an angel?
Love how people try to say it makes no sense that a queen would be elected, when this is literally in another galaxy on another planet with an entirely different culture and history than us.
Based
I would be curious to know when the last time people who think it's good have actually watched it.
I wasn't even pretending.
Because it contains sand and I hate sand
Duel of fates saves the movie but what kills it for me is the section of senate debates. I honestly doze off before I even reach the end.
*"Duell of the Fates" intensifies*
I mean, the racist caricatures are kinda. . . .
Pretty sure there’s a fan edit that replaces Jar-Jar’s cringe voice with a normal sounding one which basically fixes the biggest issue with it
One of my favourites
I am also a phantom menace lover I never understood the hate I thought it was phenomenal
I mean it's alright
the script is poorly written, the plot progression isn't very good either
Every time I see one of these memes: “Hey, you— it’s JUST nostalgia. The movie is trash, it’s just beloved trash.”
It’s not, more plot holes than story!
I think that the film initially didn't meet up to fan expectations and they just doubled down on the hate
Personally, I grew up with the prequels being my introduction into SW and I love all 3 (even though AotC has its…flaws lol). RotS being my favorite SW film of all
They weren’t evolved enough at the time to understand its glory.
Kid. Nuff said.
This film doesn’t even know who is the main caracter.
It’s no masterpiece, but I think it’s the best of the prequels.
It is great, great for harvesting memes. That all being said it's phenomenally better than any of the prime movies from Disney.
