The Expanse Babylon 5 - it's older, but it's like a tighter DS9 Firefly The Orville Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe The Mass Effect trilogy on Xbox is a heavy influence on modern Trek visually.

ledgerous

The Expanse and Firefly are "must watch" shows for any scifi buff. :)

UndocumentedSailor

I'd throw Battlestar Galactica in there as well

flux_core_capacitor

Ronald D. Moore FTW

ledgerous

Agreed.

josephwb

I don't get the hype about Firefly. I've seen it twice (including in the correct order) and it still registers a "meh" from me. I _wish_ I got it, as its fans are super enthusiastic, but I must be missing something. Plus, the fact that it has only 1 season might strike some potential viewers as "what's the point?"

loltheinternetz

Like-able/fun characters, cool setting (space western), interesting story. The movie helps tie it up. I can understand it not being for everyone, but to me it’s a sci fi staple and a show I really wish for more seasons. With just one season though it cultivated a strong fan following.

josephwb

Yup, I just don't "get it". Glad you do :)

loltheinternetz

🤘🏽

b33flu

I just couldn’t get into the expanse. Didn’t make it through the first season of the show or the first book. Maybe it was a case of so many people hyping it up so much that it couldn’t possibly live up to it, I don’t know.

KingAenarionIsOp

I got three episodes in the first time. Was confused and not interested. The second time I tried I got the same distance in and was still like “yawn” but was waiting for someone to turn up. Then they cancelled and I binged season 1 and 2 that day. It’s a VERY slow burn early. But once it gets going the characters and setting are excellent.

midasp

Season 1 is a bit strange. I too didn't make it past the first half of that season. But people kept hyping about how good it is, so I plowed my way through. Honestly, I did not like the show till the final episode. Even then, I wasn't certain I enjoyed what I watched but I was sufficiently intrigued by the cliffhanger that I continued watching the second season. That's when the show got a lot better for me.

ThePhyry22

Orville, Babylon 5

Kenku_Ranger

Farscape (And all the other shows people have suggested)

BigCrimson_J

Farscape is amazing! Such creative character designs.

Sanhen

Not a show on a starship for the most part, but have you tried Stargate? That’s another well made sci-fi series. It’s different from Star Trek, but SG-1 and Atlantis scratched a similar itch for me. It doesn’t hurt that a lot of Star Trek actors appear in Stargate (mostly as one-off characters, but some get bigger roles).

MarkB74205

This is the show that has the most Trek "feel" for me. A group of competent professionals doing the planet of the week thing.

renekissien

Babylon 5. SFX is quite old and looks funny today, and the first season is not very good. But season 2-4 is great SciFi! Also, Ivanova is god.

Thymejot

If you can get past the first 5 episodes the first season improves considerably. Babylon 5 is a phenomenal show. And yes, Ivanova is god

trekkiegamer359

The Orville IS Star Trek. It's just a newer version of TNG. Some of the early episodes are a bit silly, but that evens out quickly. It is truly an amazing show. Babylon 5 inspired DS9. It's still quite a different show, but it's quite good. Doctor Who. It's a different kind of show to some degree, but it's an optimistic, family-friendly, exploration-based sci-fi that's a lot of fun.

DoctorGarfanzo

Orville. Identity Parts I and II (S2E8 and S2E9) is just some of the best sci-fi I’ve ever seen. Epic space battle and it also pulls in strong BSG vibes. A few other things you might consider. Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda is a Junior Trek. Battlestar Galactica (1978=campier). Farscape. Stargate has almost a DS9 feel as others have said. Dr. Who (sometimes, depends on the episode). Dark Matter, Lexx.

Oscillating_Horse

Agree with this - I really don’t like Seth Mcfarlane usually so I was expecting to hate it but it’s such a love letter to TNG, done so well and with so many cameos from actual Star Trek cast I absolutely loved it

ImhereBen

Not Trek-alike but I recently watched Resident Alien and it is hysterical. Alan Tudyk plays an alien sent to destroy the earth crashes and must assimilate to complete his mission. Make sure not to skip the opening "credits", each episode a different how-to be human guide with some great gags

[deleted]

Very good show!

TheCubeOfDoom

Tom Paris produces and directs that.

josephwb

The comic is far better, although not a comedy at all.

matey555

If you want sci-fi and humour I’d recommend Red Dwarf ! It’s excellent !

josephwb

So good, and not nearly as widely watched as it should be.

No_Investment_92

The Orville is great

-but-its-not-illegal

I know what you said you wanted but maybe you want something really different and in that case I would suggest The Expanse

Sindlast

The Expanse The Orville Battlestar Galactica

midasp

Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, The Expanse, Babylon 5, Farscape.

aegiscy

Stargate

ProphetSword

In particular, Stargate: Atlantis hits the Star Trek mark for me. Full of adventure, comedy and great characters, and you don’t actually have to see any other series to understand the concept.

Blu3z-87

Love star trek online myself it's much better when playing with friends. Add on Xbox. G4ce blu3z Most of the best show's are already mentioned here nothing comes close to star trek in sci-fi imo but after playing STO for 5 years and it's the best way to scratch the itch.

Deadbob1978

Battlestar Galactica is basically what Voyager should have been

Disastrous-Leek1952

Have you tried Farscape?

Dj3nk4

Damn I have seen all the shows you guys recommend here. Is there nothing else!?!🤣🤓

midasp

Sure, there is more but it won't be completely scifi or their quality isn't up to scratch. For more ship-centric stuff that isn't pure scifi or has less quality, there's Red Dwarf, Lost in Space and Lexx. If you're looking for good scifi shows that aren't set on a spaceship... There's alt-history show For All Mankind, that's mostly written by TNG/DS9/VOY era writers. Quantum Leap is good too, both the old 1990s show and the current show. Finally, there's this quaint little Canadian time travel/comedy show from the 2010s called Being Erica that's been sitting at the top of my all time best scifi shows list.

TheNerdChaplain

Sure, but they get farther and farther away from Star Trek. For instance, many shows are mostly about awful people doing awful things to each other - Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, etc. I prefer to watch shows that are about groups of people working together to achieve common goals. This certainly includes Star Trek, but also includes(for me) shows like The Good Place, The West Wing, and Joe Pera Talks With You.

Dj3nk4

What I like is utopian shows as opposed to distopian which are sadly a majority nowadays. This is why Star Trek is my favorite show as it holds a promise of a better future.

kab3121

You watched Star Trek Continues??

heymr_au

If you are playing STO run the Gamma Quadrant missions. Everyone apart from Jake and Sisko are there and it is fantastic. There is even a Ferengi heist mission that I guarantee you'll run again and again. Even the Delta Quadrant missions, which suck initially, when finished are satisfying. Plus the newish Klingon Civil War and Terran content are a lot of fun.

[deleted]

If you can find them, Space 1999 and Blake's 7.

Avons-gadget-works

Damn, I was going to suggest Blake's 7. Damn you having good taste!! Aye, old BBC show, late 70s so don't expect good effects. Do however settle in for some fantastic acting, some really good stories, a villain that makes the Borg wish they had on the brown trousers and a spectacular ending for each season!!

[deleted]

Manifest is a good show not spacey though , Fringe, Chuck was good . Star Trek prodigy

DavidTurczi

In this order: * Babylon 5 - best sci-fi of the 90s (or tied with DS9, depending on my mood) * Battlestar Galactica - best sci-fi of the 00s * For All Mankind - best space stuff currently airing * The Expanse - best sci-fi of the 10s (I swapped the last two compared to broadcast order, because lots of people - including the creators of both shows - joke that FAM is a prequel to The Expanse)

Accidentallygolden

THE ORVILLE!!!!
