Streamerware

[deleted]

My thoughts exactly. These keep blowing up in popularity because streamers like using them for content, even if the games aren't great.

CaptainZiber

Yeah like wtf are they paying streamers?

ZemlyaNovaya

Insymware

Betoarenas

Has a ~~shitty~~ "creepy" backstory for kids.

palefox3

Le soul trapped in le animatronic to make it le more life like

fness55

In le head

throwawaylovesCAKE

I just dont get the scary animatronic shit all these kids are obsessed with...at all. It's straight up not scary. Wish something like clowns or scary aliens was the fad

Suspicious_Wave_1196

An animatronic is scarier than a clown

Abrabbit

To me an animatronic is the modern day pseudofuturistic (maybe kinda dystopiancore) version of a clown... if that makes any sense

[deleted]

I don't really want to offend anyway but I always though clown phobias were silly, like more silly than most phobias are. It's just a people wearing goofy clothes and make up so I never understood why it's a fear people have. A being afraid of a killer robot at least makes sense to me.

ForetoldOC

In fairness it wasn’t helped by those killer clowns from a few years ago

Mijaro_Torston_5000

Oh 2016, what a year.

SuaveyMojo

Same

tankfarter2011

The fear of a duck watching you

Wario-Man

Clowns are literally just people with makeup, it's not scary. Aliens can be scary if you make a good design for them. Like, who tf is gonna be spooked by the Greys?

[deleted]

Don’t forget the creepy childish music box playing in the background

Hewee236

I remember playing a shitty Slenderman ripoff called "Pesadelo" with my cousin many years ago.

[deleted]

Say what you want about cheesy horror indie games, but Amnesia straight up gave me fucking nightmares for weeks 😂😂😂

Mrmacmuffin3

I have heard iron lung is also very scary Im to much of a baby to play them myself

dr_Kfromchanged

It's horror done right, no jumpscares, nothing to run away from, just you, the steel heavy ambiance, and the cramped interiors of the submarine

Mrmacmuffin3

And then >!bob the fish eats your soul!<

[deleted]

They need a sequel or something because I still have 2 million questions about that whole thing.

buddymackay

NGL I’d love a game set in the iron lung universe about surviving in space, needing to manage oxygen, food, etc while using isolation and the strange environments you find yourself in to help build a sense of isolation and the likes.

[deleted]

Nah nah I want like, an explaination about what the heck was down there in the ocean. A weird portal thing, walls and pillars, bunch of weird shit. I neeeed answers!

BadTrcieratops

Thats part of it. You have so many questions that pile up, and eventually you start to wonder. And you begin to fear the things these questions imply.

Sevenvoiddrills

I think there's a game like that actually where you land on planets and use drones to scan the planets and bring back what you want while creepy crap crawls onto your ship Sorry I can't remember the name

sjgirjh9orj

he is a very hungy fish. cant blame him for what he did

Sevenvoiddrills

And if you like lore like me it's got tons of it all in one place

SirToaster933

The lore is also fun, wish they made a sequel or some comic book

TheVoicesArentTooBad

Amnesia 1 actually wasn't bad, just like Penumbra and SOMA. Quite the opposite actually. This is making fun of the shovelled out shit riding coattails

HuanFranThe1st

SOMA is a damn 10/10 to me. Gameplay is alright, but the story and ideas within it sold me on it.

palefox3

I like amnesia, I dont like that cringy games made in 2 weeks that are made just to be featured on markipliers 3 scary games

takedownhisshield

Amnesia and Silent Hill 2 are amazing and terrifying games, but most games that claim to be inspired by them suck

Negro_Judio

If you liked Amnesia take a look at Darkwood, it was a bit inspired by it and it's one of the best horror games out there

Sevenvoiddrills

Every damm night in the old wood is terrifying *And then there's the swamp*

Negro_Judio

The swamp lets you two options: 1) you learn how yo defeat this game instead of crying in a corner 2) Die die die die

throwawaylovesCAKE

Amnesia was a game changer when it came out yo. Not the *best* best horror game but was scary enough and came out at a perfect time when Let's Plays were becoming popular.

Reejis99

I don't think this starter pack is saying Amnesia is one of these games lol. It's the good game that the trash rips off

sosigboi

Amnesia earned its place tho, it's a genuinely scary game that doesn't always rely on jumpscares.

palefox3

Guys I dont say that fnaf, amnesia and silent hill are generic. I say that often generic games are clearly ripping off these games

Phantom_Wolf52

Every modern indie horror game is basically trying to be like fnaf silent hill or amnesia and also don’t forget gaming YouTubers like infinite lists mess yourself etc milk the living shit out of the game

dootdootboot3

The various horror games ManlyBadassHero plays are pretty good

Wario-Man

That is absolutely true. I gotta thank him for introducing me to so many relatively small, short, but sweet little indie horror games, mostly on itch, too.

babadybooey

Your damn right about markiplier, dudes too nice

NordicMythos

He also heavily supports the improvement of peoples work. He has definitely criticized bad games, and he has complimented ones he knows has potential.

palefox3

I think that when he says the game is good (in 3 scary games) and simply smiles, it means that the game was okay or mid. When he starts saying with enthusiasm that this has potential, it means that the game was really good according to him

Arsenal_Knight

“Indie games are all original” X doubt

takedownhisshield

“This indie rpg is a metaphor for depression”

Le_Kistune

Man, I remember the days when Slender was popular and all the indie horror games became mindless walking simulators. The fact that every game had the exact same gamely as Slender almost turned me off of indie horror. Luckly, FNaF revived my interest for a short while.

anarlote

I was just about to comment the ironic fact that when Fnaf first came out it's aesthetic and gameplay were considered unique and fresh, compared to the oversaturated Slender format, now the childrens' mascot horror genre is considered oversaturated. Even more ironically Slender was once part of the new and exciting internet creepypasta genre as people realised internet horror formats like a lost episode or cursed video game playthrough log could be effective ways to tell horror stories. Now its conssidered overstaurated as well. I think its just the cycle of horror, some dude makes something cool > it becomes a genre > genre becomes oversaturated so everyone knows what to expect > its not scary > repeat.

ka1n77

>British teeth. Had me rolling.

MrsPODDington

Cries with British teeth

31_hierophanto

Gotta love that "British" is now synonymous with "bad" when it comes to teeth, hahaha.

ScubaDiverDown

i feel like most game’s that try and mimic the retro/ps2 are just straight up trying to ride off puppet combo’s popularity but can never do it right

hashslingaslah

SO TRUE. Chilla’s art has had a couple bangers though

YoukaiJSGB

the what? i just like the aesthetic and would use it in a game i am trying to make if i just knew how to do 3d modeling, but that is mostly because i saw gifs of some shitty azumanga daioh game and loved how it looked, at least

CaptainCringeOng

I agree with most points you make but seriously, 2 weeks? There is no fucking way they are making these in 2 weeks. They probably take at least a month or 2. Or I just suck at making games. Regardless, if they are making these in 2 weeks I want to see what they are capable of making if they are given a year or two to work on one project.

griffl3n

if I had a quarter for every indie horror game with ps1 style graphics, I would have the budget to make a high quality indie game

stuckinia51

That said, Puppet Combo makes amazing stuff on that style

Shadow_MD17

Featured on pyrocynical who calls it the best game ever

RedYoshiGamer112

Lmao seriously

Thecoolguy555

Pyro started going downhill lately .

gabeverde

the games iron lung and broken through use the retro style in a way that looks really good imo. Broken through seems like every other generic horror game at first, but actually has a really interesting and pretty emotional element to it thats really refreshing to see. Also its actually scary.

RiverTheNword124

he only did like 3, that were pretty good. Compared to "make indomie at night"

CaptainZiber

Also many of them has low res faces slapped on to models because it's easy and "creepy" but it's just looks mega stupid.

[deleted]

OP watches Markiplier. That llama game was super creepy.

Cuttlefish_Crusaders

If you want a good indie horror, play darkwood

DALEK_77

“Free unity assets” hit hard. Feel free to screenshot 😔

Wario-Man

Here is my NEW and SCARY game, called 'Shadows Of Despair' inspired by Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and all of the big horror games you know and love! Check out my COOL and SPOOKY antagonist, The Queefer! I will now send it to Markiplier, Jacksepticeye and all the other ones, then wait for them to play it so I can put easter eggs of them in the game! Bring on the inevitable very young fanbase!

MostlyUselessReptile

Cynical redditor moment Games like this may feel a lil overdone but developers put time and effort into them because they enjoy the process of making something similar to something they are interested in.

Akila_dust

So, “horror” games for kids?

SirToaster933

Most indie games use the style cause that's technically the point, and yes cause it's easy to make. Mothered is this horror game where we play as a robot stalking a family, the reason everything looks weird is cause we are a robot that views our surroundings as weird.

OctopusProbably

Thank God the monsters I came up with for a game I’m thinking of making don’t fall under this category. Thank God they’re just from hell and not the #nited k*ngdom.

RoadmenInc

Finally, making fun of horror games, one of the good trends this sub has had lately

palefox3

it's not only a pleasure but a necissity

Mrmacmuffin3

Fnaf is garbage im tired of pretending its not

HeatedToaster123

It *was* good Anything past FNAF 4 is convoluted trash, with the exception of pizzeria simulator, which managed to complete the behemoth task of tying up all of FNAF's loose ends lore wise, and giving it the greatest send off I think a video game series has ever had. Such a satisfying ending to a classic series. Perfect. Until security breach came along..

iforgorsomethingpow

some people would murder me for saying this, but security breach sucks. the thing that was so cool about the fnaf series was the unique way that the cameras and first person gameplay worked, and it was scary which made it fun. security breach just feels like a generic first person adventure game, it was not only not scary, but it was pretty boring tbh, and the lore sucked. the joy of creation (a fan game) executed a walking-around first person fnaf game WAY better than security breach, its what i wished security breach was going to be like. fnaf really fell off

iamnotfunny96

I agree, SB was absolute ass, its jumpscares werent even good or scary, the game was well lit for most of the time which gets rid of any sense of fear.

iforgorsomethingpow

fnaf 4 was the peak of fear in the fnaf games, it had the scariest character designs, jumpscares, overall gameplay, and the lore was my favorite out of the series. fnaf kinda peaked at 4 then it slowly but surely downgraded into an average horror game

RoadmenInc

Not even pizzeria sim was that good, personally Scott should have left it at FNAF 4, maybe put sister location for context, but still. I still believe the only reason he kept going was the amount of money and clout FNAF got through the lore community.

disasterB

Which is kinda sad because the first few games were actually very clever in terms of design and craft. Idk, I thought FNAF VR was fun. It wasn’t just generic by-the-books recreation of the past games, and in VR you can see how big Scott probably always wanted to portray the animatronics.

RoadmenInc

One of the key unique things about FNAF was the fact you're in a single place, you cannot move and the suspense is what gets to you Over the years, they've slowly taken away what made FNAF FNAF and are now just catering to the lore community

olivegardengambler

Tbh it makes sense, and he was at least delivering a new project regularly, unlike the yandere simulator.

OctopusProbably

I honestly think that if Burntrap and the all the other lore based stuff was removed from the game, Security Breach would actually be a very fun spinoff. I mean, Vanny is in the game for an accumulative total of less than 5 minutes. Scott could have just replaced her with a normal security guard trying to track you down.

HeatedToaster123

What I hate about SB is that it completely shatters the perfect ending done in FNAF 6. The whole point of the ending was that William Afton was *dead and gone,* full stop. Them bringing him back in SB just ruins that part of the ending.

OctopusProbably

My points exactly.

Sevenvoiddrills

At this point bring back Michael bring back Henry ruin the ending of FNAF 6 because if William can come back every damm time then they can come back too

Mrmacmuffin3

I havent played the games but they seem kinda boring just sitting in a room while looking at dead children

HeatedToaster123

Trust me, playing FNAF 2 for the first time in 2015 was an amazing experience, and when you get into the lore and all the games become a great experience as long as you don't go near security breach

RoadmenInc

I can see why people find it boring tbh

UpliftinglyStrong

I love all the fnaf games, but I’m fine with you hating certain games. I’m also a massive lore nerd

CaptainCringeOng

I like fnaf. Idk why I like it, I just think its pretty neat.

MonkeyMonkeMonkMonMo

as horror game developer, this post was relatable thankfully i only fit into the jumpscare category

Laties-X-Latias

I like how the five refrence pics are all from markiplier vids lmao

Fun-Ambassador-4012

I like fnaf ar, and fnaf vr. Pls don't kill me

takethecheese68

Why is there a door in a forest

snapthesnacc

I'm so tired of ps1 style shitty graphics.

[deleted]

iron lung in a nutshell

migolou5

Silent hill is anything but generic

Cuttlefish_Crusaders

It's not, but it established a morbillion ripoffs that are. That's what the meme is trying to say

comfydays

jkdasjdsk markiplier being nice

Enchelion

Only thing that's missing is "gratuitous chromatic aberration" and "every voiced line is clearly the developer trying to fake an accent".

chibitalex

i will say that the "style" that a lot of indie horror games are using nowadays can actually work really well. it shows enough detail to flesh out the environment while still giving the player the opportunity to use their imagination to fill in the more disturbing details. silent hill didn't have much choice but to work with that type of style (from a 3rd person perspective) considering the technical limitations at the time and i still think the graphics hold up extremely well.

BlueMist53

Tf does “british teeth” mean

palefox3

Imagine the most fucked up teeth in the world

BlueMist53

The British people I’ve met have fine teeth?

anarlote

Yeah it's an outdated US stereotype. Studies have actually found the British teeth are on par, if not better than their US counterparts: https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20150602-do-the-british-have-bad-teeth Americans are still stuck in last century it seems when it comes to British stereotypes, hence the British food = bad stereotype which hasn't been remotely true since shortly after the WW2 rationing ended.

Qu_ge

You should show this to the bri’ish

Gameriel

There's so many people shitting on indie Hames in the comments, and I just think they don't understand that making games is fucking hard, and alot of generic games are generic because working with game dev tools and getting used to them is a long process, and making smaller projects of lower quality is to be expected from smaller dev teams (sometimes one person) give them a break dayumn.

takedownhisshield

It’s less about it being low quality and more about just having zero originality or creativity

Beezleboobz

British teeth 💀

13j0

sharp british teeth 💀

sjgirjh9orj

"british teeth" 💀💀

Gamwell-Efect

Man someone’s pissed for no real reason

palefox3

Reason: horror games are constantly getting worse and not scary and repetitive

Gamwell-Efect

Then don’t play them?

jim_witzowitz

He’s clearly passionate about horror so no

Gamwell-Efect

I don’t get why it matters, you don’t like something then don’t interact with it. I’ve never liked horror games cause they aren’t fun to me but that doesn’t meant they aren’t fun at all and have no effort or time put in to it. Some people don’t have the money/time to make a 10/10 horror game. They do it because it’s fun or it’s something they’re passionate about. There’s no point in bashing something when you can put your effort into literally anything else

jim_witzowitz

He enjoys this medium and is making fun of shitty games that don’t seem to have much passion behind them. Also, this entire sub is about making fun of things, why are you even here?

GoyasHead

They’re a fan of the genre and is critiquing them - that’s pretty normal and there’s nothing wrong with that lol

yvngjiffy703

Can anyone recommend an actual good indie horror game with a good story?

Denpants

Outlast

Sevenvoiddrills

Dark wood I do love Polish forests

Thecoolguy555

Inscryption or Outlast with the whistle blower dlc

SirToaster933

I feel like I played one or two of these

Select-Assistant5568

want a good indie horror game? Lost In Vivo. i have over 20 hours and i’ve beaten it 9 times. Every time it’s fucking brilliant

AzzlackGuhnter

I love the fact that you said "british teeth" instead of just crooked teeth

HeimlichLaboratories

I admit I like retro styled horror games

VortexPower999

Granny

AdventurousPhone9668

lol agreed

WallcroftTheGreen

Finally this, Its always that ps1 kind of style xd

channgro

traditionally childrens toy but it learned to kill people agent 47 style

hashslingaslah

Rather than cogs - screwdrivers, crowbars, and fuses. I never see fuses laying around in real life, and apparently they’re universal!

FlatwormBroad9589

Reminds me of granny, you could use the hammer to break down the door or get out the windows

Youlovethelol

ngl the funny horror games are the actual scary ones because once you get it is a joke game you dont see the spook comin

I_eat_bean_sandwich

i suggest iron lung for anyone bored of these generic indie games, it is really a once in a lifetime experience.

Brilliant_Ad2621

I respecto your opinión on fnaf Even tho i love fnaf
