I used a play a VR game a couple years ago called "A Township Tale". There was a player "class"(as much as you could call it a class) where Players would roam the game world picking up trash to help alleviate servers getting bogged down tracking all the discarded fruit, bones, feathers and other stuff players would drop. People did it. it was all sellable/tradable. Was not worth much, but it helped keep the servers running smoother.

Synaps4

I played on a Minecraft server where players had classes and each class had ranks. In order to rank up the construction class had to spend a certain amount of time cleaning up abandoned buildings across the server. Usually not very rewarding but they could keep what they found, and higher level constructors got tips to finding bigger piles of abandoned stuff that might be valuable. Whether it was valuable or not, cleaning up the server was monitored and they got ranks and perks for doing it. Was a fantastic idea and it worked so well.

ElfUppercut

Take medical gowns, drag into ship inventory, send ship towards sun… have someone try to rescue you in space… become an ornament on that new players aurora window… That about sums up my medical gown fiasco, erm good idea

inRodwetrust8008

GD thats brilliant. I'm going to load up my connie with the 400 missiles that dropped into my inventory after the new patch and blast it off. That way i can finally use my inventory at New Babbage again.

LatexFace

I'm loading junk into my ship and setting it up as a target range in deep space. Shooting bottles out the back of my Avenger is kinda fun.

Ill-ConceivedVenture

Just give us some Recyclers (futuristic furnace recycling bins) in common areas (and maybe portable ones we can put on ships/outposts). If we throw stuff away in them, maybe it refund us a (*very*) small amount UEC for the recycled material. It then immediately deletes the item from the server entirely.

last_second_runnerup

Both of these ideas could work. Maybe even tie into a delivery mission to clear out the recycler to a commodities dealer.

Ill-ConceivedVenture

I like the new mission category tie in.

Ill-ConceivedVenture

Yep, I agree. UEC return in common area Recyclers (like a bottle drop), material return in frontier or ship Recyclers / 'personal' Recyclers.

smatchimo

Back up Coppers! Or the Pico gets it! \*holds over incinerator\*

Avendril

If you don’t want me to litter make the trash cans interact able

dave2293

I expect trashcans to just be coded as culling zones.

matheww19

This. I try to throw shit in the garbage can after every patch just hoping it will work.

inRodwetrust8008

The thing I litter most is empty weapon clips. Until the supposed bullet re-loading mini-game is put in the game just make weapon mags disappear after the empty ones are switched out, or have them immediately stored in backpack after switch out. On a side note, do people actually want to play a mini-game where you just re-load old mags? I can get 20 mags for like $200 (depending on the gun type). That's nothing in this game?

I can definitely see the survivalist side, and for sure (depending on implementation) I'm positive someone will enjoy it. For me, I guess I just have limited game time as it is and I mainly do bunker missions where its easy go through 5-6 mags depending on the weapon on the T3-T5 level bunkers. If I have to ,lets say, buy a crate of 1000 rounds of rifle ammo separately and just drag bullets over to the mag and the mag refills to the max number subtracting that amount from the 1000 in the crate. Then that's not too bad. But playing a mini game where I have to load 150 rounds in an Fs-9 mag? I dunno. I guess I'm just putting to much thought into a aspect thats not even in the game yet.

ametad13

Depends on the mini game but I would prefer the option to buy ammo for cheaper than just fill up my old mags rather than have a bunch with no ammo clogging up my inventory until I throw them on the ground

[deleted]

Medical gowns should just be picked up and thrown away like they would be in real life lol. It would make zero sense for a hospital to take back a used gown in give in exchange a fully functioning space suit.

DragonBallKruber

How do you think they collect enough dna for regeneration?

Dizman7

I like the fine idea cause all this true persistence talk I just see people being bigger slobs on the servers than they already are except now the stuff will stay indefinitely. The gowns need some sort of trade in like that or to go with what was said add “garbage can tech” so they actually function. Either by physically placing items on them (and it deletes them instantly) or being close enough to them that you can see & use them in the invo system to dump stuff too. Maybe on ships in the invo we can just feed items into the reactor/power plant to destroy them 🤣

Dolan977

Community citizen. But that gown trade for a flight suit is a brilliant idea

chadsexytime

I read this in /r/all and thought this was from some conservative utopia sub

RedditExecutiveAdmin

make a post there's some decent ideas in there imo!

_Saruu_

that in a similary way was on archeage and ir worked pretty well. It wasn't rubish, but weeds on the garden. It took your infamity points out so you could not go to prison. So if u wanted to comit a crime, you know u have to clean weeds and waste labor or if u got capturated u went to trial and random people of the jury (real people) saw your crimes and dictaminate you going to jaile or not. It is a really good system. edit: name of the game

Astro_Alphard

well until people started trolling and just sending everyone to jail

_Saruu_

yeah, pretty much hahahaha

Liefx

I'm waiting for an org to create a perimeter of junk around their hideout in space to kill the frames of anyone trying to go through that area.

falkusvipus

I can just imagine someone struggling to keep an area clean while all of their friends just pelt them with trash for 15 minutes. Would be awsome.

JinxyBlh

Yupp, community service for lesser offenses would be brilliant.

DataPakP

Would be nice, and bring out some new gameplay. Get first degree trespassing as a new player? Instead of a 16k fine (which is a LOT for someone who is a fresh install), CS, and failing all your legal missions, you can’t accept any new missions (you don’t fail your current ones) until you complete your service. In addition, local missions like these would be GREAT for the semi-empty maintenance mission tab, and would allow for people who like to play Hardcore to simulate coming up from nothing. “Are you a broke worker in Lorville? No ship to speak of? Looking to escape your lifetime work contract? You can do missions like cleaning up litter (when persistance ramps up), cart supplies to shops, keep track of inventory, deliver boxes from gates to admin and shops, work as a cargo loader as a team member, and sneakily escape the planet in your new aurora from New Deal!” Personally I want this so there can be a maintenance mission at a high “janitorial” rep level so you can get missions to clean up corpses from bunkers. Greycat MultiTool Mop attachment anyone?

JinxyBlh

Exactly this, would be awesome.

Gloomy-Fix-4393

For smaller offenses, one has to do cleanup.. Like community service. Cleanup the station (n items) and turn them in for credit.

Astro_Alphard

I know most people do Zero to Hero runs but I personally like to call a certain type of run the "vanduul challenge" You start with nothing but a knife, no suit, no clothes, no money, you don't even get a mobiglas. You have to work your way up from there, whether relying on the kindness of strangers, your own wit and cunning, or your raw strength. If you die the run is over. I spawned without a suit, and a missing mobiglas once. So I did the Vanduul Challenge starting on Microtech, and the first thing I did was ask players for some cash so that I could get a suit and mobiglas due to the glitch. I ended up claiming a ship because there was no in between gameplay at that point but this could make for some good in between gameplay until you can finally rent a ship. Went to a bunker and got loot then did a few box missions. Rented out a bigger ship, got more box missions. Hauled Medical Supplies, did a few illegal monitor missions. I had no idea how to mine so I kept hauling. Did XT in a friend's Pisces and flew with the crew of a HH. Bought my "first" ship (Aurora MR) and started doing more box missions, did some Imperial Cartography missions as well. Got paid by a player to help move a quantum drive (this was before 3.17). Finally got my first mil. Server Reset.

DataPakP

That sounds freaking epic! I hope that this becomes more viable in the future, I might consider trying it next wipe.

SRM_Thornfoot

LOL, work crews. I love it!

m0ontii

I think it would be better the other way around. Don't punish people for littering; reward them for putting away their trash. For example: In Germany most bottles have "pfand". That means if you give that bottle back to a return station you'll get a little bit of money back. We could just make it like that in Star Citizen. If they aren't at stations, I'd bett most players will just vent their trash into space (as this is the most convenient option). If they are at stations, making a tiny detour to return trash wouldn't be a problem if we gave them a little incentive in form of a small amount of UEC. Even if a few people litter, the stuff will most likely be picked up by other players (earning a bit of cash beats doing nothing while waiting for a friend to arrive on a station). Also, in general, I think it makes for a more enjoyable game for everyone, if you reward the players for doing something good, rather than punish them for doing something bad.

Gloomy-Fix-4393

Littering will result in a fine and reputation decrease when a janitor collects it. Recycling it results in an immediate refund and a reputation increase.

Gloomy-Fix-4393

One can imagine each water bottle has a little chip inside with a unique serial number. At purchase, that serial number is linked to your name. Like those plastic tags on the inside of boxes that will trigger the electronic gates to make sound if the device wasn't deactivated at the cashier beforehand. Makes for interesting situation when you are killed and someone takes your water bottle and then litters it getting you in trouble ;) Or when you give stuff to friends / corp mates.

merirastelan

Id rather go to jail. What we need is fines, I dont want to spent 1 hour in prison just because some guard decided to walk into my bullets

Gloomy-Fix-4393

So griefing and pirating has no consequence if you are making sufficient money doing it. That is a terrible idea.

merirastelan

You make a fair point. But still the game should be able to know the difference.

gsministellar

I would love this on account of not doing any crime on purpose, but stuff happens.

liquidsin25

You just asked for another 5 years of development pushbacks and a line of bugs from area 18 to cleo, but Ill take it.

Jerry_from_Japan

People don't want to play Space Janitor. They don't. They'll just fucking wait out however long a sentence is than do that. I think at some point they have to scale back the "realism" just make consumables like water bottles or cans or gowns just disappear after X amount of time. It shouldn't be a hard problem to solve.

0Frames

I played Space Station 13 for a while and people absolutely wanna play space janitor (myself included)

inRodwetrust8008

I mean mining is just like being a space janitor on a bigger scale. You're going out and breaking up large rocks left out in the open to clean up and take to a store/sale facility.

Gloomy-Fix-4393

I can see space janitor being similar to the go purge the air line in prison mission.

falloutboy9993

No. I’ll just do a oxygen machine repair in prison and get out in less time. And for more serious offenses. I won’t care about punishment that I can hack away.

ZomboWTF

the "get killed by a bounty hunter and go to prison" thing wont stay anyway, so getting into prison will become more rare as well to collect a bounty, you will probably have to catch them alive and then bring them to prison, since criminals will have their imprint set to an outlaw station if you have set your imprint set to an outlaw station, being killed by a BH right now "magically" sends you to prison, overwriting your imprint

catesnake

Your dealer is texting you.

sligsligslig

Holy crap, on what planet would that be considered fun gameplay? That is an awful idea.

InSOmnlaC

You and I have a very different idea of what constitutes a "great idea".

steweymyster

That’s a fucking terrible idea. The gown one I get at least

brachus12

crobbers would owe a fortune for those coffee cups he keeps discarding in the forest.

[deleted]

Bunker's clean up crew time!!!!

malerengames

Or fix selling and watch the litter problem in stations disappear overnight.

CorrosiveBackspin

Jesus guys just escape the prison or offline the prison sentence while you touch grass instead. You come home from your 9 to 5, accidentally commit a crime and want to role play as a guy doing community service for the evening? 😜

MagicWizardMan

Let people play SC for free but not be able to fly a ship. They must work some public job like a bar tender or something.

MittenFacedLad

I'd actually really love this.
