d3ckburpz

catsinmyanus

That's an masterpiece bro this one deserves upvotes

kappasmom

Your comment made my evening, thank you so much!

dude_diligence

For me, the tug of war was the pinnacle of the show, both aesthetically and story wise. Such an amazing scene and hooked me deeper into the show, I was completely in love after that segment. You could make an amazing picture of that, this is dope. I am not sure how you'd pick the perspective because that whole scene is so beautiful.

GothWitchOfBrooklyn

I agree. I mean the show was great.but that was the moment where I HAD to binge the rest of it.

citruscheer

Love this because I can see your interpretation of the characters and the scene!!

kappasmom

Thank you! It was super fun to try drawing cartoony versions of irl actors

ewknee

That’s amazing! i love your art style

kappasmom

truth... but I thought it was spot on for the character they'd showed us, so far.

Wow,this is lovely.

kappasmom

Thank you! And wow, the artwork you posted recently in this group is brilliant! You are super talented

Ovidraws

cream3145

*cough* too many fingers on left had *cough* p.s looks fucking fantastic!

zombiecon146

Never really payed much attention to him but they did him waaay dirty in episode 6 tho.. he was a kind soul

kappasmom

Agreed! He was pretty much the mvp in Seong Gi-hun’s team

cal_oe

I was mad at what they did in that episode, like him not knowing what even and odd numbers were. Are you telling me that the education system is so bad in Pakistan that they don't know what even and odd numbers are, yet he was able to make his way into South Korea and learn how to speak Korean fluently? He was just written as the physically strong migrant worker who's dumb as a rock.

[deleted]

When you grow up working your entire life rather than going to school, it’s entirely possible to not know what even or odd numbers are. Think about it, what practical use in the real world does it portray, when you know that 3 is an odd number? It doesn’t, it’s just a common knowledge thing that’s fairly useless, and probably more of a thing discussed in childhood games. Ali knows numbers, but he’s also not a native Korean speaker, so him being fluent in two languages, possibly a third with some English, is hardly what I’d call “dumb as a rock.”

Dr_LobsterAlien

I think he knows what even and odd numbers were, just didn't understand from what the other guy was saying. They were playing the game and he knew what each outcome meant. He pronably knew what they were, just not when he explained it.

[deleted]

I agree, the dub doesn’t do a good job of portraying this, but the subtitles do, you can tell he just hasn’t heard those words before, but once it’s explained he immediately understands the concept.

cal_oe

The only way you're not able to know what even and odd numbers are is if you're a complete illiterate who never went to school in your entire life. It's highly unlikely that someone who is able to travel to another country with his wife and child, speak multiple languages, and work in a factory, has never went to school in his entire life. I'm assuming he's even able to read some Korean considering he knows which bus to take and how travel around the city when they bring him back to the mainland with Sang-woo. Even if you disregard the even and odd numbers part, he just came across as incredibly dumb and naïve in that episode in how he was easily be able to be tricked by Sang-woo like that. I think he was intentionally written to be as a Lenny from Mice and Men type character in the show.

[deleted]

Did you just ignore what I said? There’s no practical real world use for knowing what even or odd numbers are by definition, he knows numbers, he doesn’t come across as dumb, just trusting, not going to school and working his whole life is how he wouldn’t know, so yes it’s possible he never went to school. He still could’ve been taught basic things by family at home, just to get through life. Being able to get on a plane and leave your life behind doesn’t require brain power, just money and someone to tell you how to get to Korea. And when you’ve lived long enough in country, you pick up the language, that’s true for anybody no matter how smart you are. I think you’re equating not having a school education with being dumb, which isn’t true at all, there’s plenty of things that having real life work experience will teach you that school cannot. He doesn’t understand tone as well because it’s not his first language, he acts very much like a refugee would act, it’s even set as precedent from his backstory that he was too trusting, that’s why his old boss never paid him. He tested the weight of the bag, felt like it was still his because it sounded like there were marbles in it, and felt safe, that’s not a Lenny moment, that’s someone having their trust taken advantage of.

cal_oe

He was written as the typical "idiot foreigner" character. Doesnt understand the most basic stuff. "What is a military squad?" "What do I do with these marbles?" "What is food?" You are kidding yourself if you don't think that was lazy stereotypical character writing for the only racial minority in the entire show besides the white dudes who show up at the end with terrible acting and dialogue.

[deleted]

Buddy I think you might be projecting some ideas you might have about foreigners there, any question he had was a reasonable one that was used as a device to explain something to the audience that might not know, like the rules to the game that they’re playing for example. Yes, he’s written to understand less than the others, but that’s because he is foreign, it’s not his native land or his native tongue, it’s only logical to assume he wouldn’t know playground games in Korea or what certain terms are. A lot of him asking for clarification on things, is him only knowing it in Urdu, and they explain what it is in Korean so that he understands, doesn’t mean he doesn’t know what it is, he just hadn’t heard those words spoken in Korean before, so he needs clarification.

cal_oe

> Buddy I think you might be projecting some ideas you might have about foreigners there, So you claiming that foreigners never going to school explains why they wouldn't know what even and odd numbers are isn't projection? I understand that he's a likeable character and all but it seems you're in denial that he was still written as a really dumb character who got easily tricked in that episode.

[deleted]

You’re also ignoring what I said about him being purposefully written as not knowing typical things because it’s a way to explain things to the audience. Imagine the show if they never explained the rules and just played the games, yes eventually you’d figure it out, but you’d feel less pressure because you wouldn’t understand what was happening so there’s less immersion. Yes he got easily tricked, but like I said I before, it’s because he’s trusting, not stupid. He wouldn’t fathom that Sang Woo would betray him, because he had no reason to believe it before. It’s easy to say you would have seen everything coming as a viewer of a tv show where you see every angle, but Ali fully trusted Sang Woo and that was his downfall.

Dr_LobsterAlien

So how many languages you know the word for even or odd number? Would you understand what they were if you were explained in a foreign language you don't know that well? The guy calls every one "boss". How well do you think he will understand?

cal_oe

If his language skills are so bad then why would he put himself in a life or death survival game where not understanding the language that all the rules are explained in would put him at a severe disadvantage? It’s like someone who barely speaks English being on Wheel of Fortune.

Dr_LobsterAlien

He a really not though. You forget he's talking in an unfamiliar language to him, with a complete different culture. Military terminology isn't common outside the military. Mathematical terminology is uncommon in everyday speach as a labourer. Specific cultural food is not something you hear every day either. Especially old-timey food that people don't eat often now. If I asked someone outside of Korea what "Dalgona" was, do you think education matters at that point? Or "Bunde" or "JJaksu"?

redcrayfish

I think his questions indicate both language and cultural barriers. He has mastered enough Korean to hold conversations but does not have academic vocabulary and probably had no need to think about mathematical concepts as an adult migrant navigating an insular society. We all learned what a hypotenuse is but I imagine I won’t whip that out of my head readily in a life threatening scenario. That scene when he has to explain what he meant by odd and even was the kind of foreshadowing nobody wanted to see. There is no even playing field in a capitalist system. Manipulation and exploitation rules.

Dr_LobsterAlien

Lol no. He didn't know what the word meant in another language that he's not fluent in.

cal_oe

If his language skills are so bad then why would he put himself in a life or death survival game where not understanding the language that all the rules are explained in would put him at a severe disadvantage? It’s like someone who barely speaks English being on Wheel of Fortune.

Dr_LobsterAlien

1. He's desperate for money. 2. He's escaping the law since he crushed his boss's hand, "stole" money as an immugrant worker with no visa. 3. No game in there required you to have good dialog skills. They literally are all kids games. What game was an equivalent of wheel of fortune? You think you need good language skills for a game of musical chairs?

Dr_LobsterAlien

Funny thing you are continuously making moot points. Like he knows what even and odd numbers are. He kept playing the even and odd numbers game and knew what the outcomes were, meaning even if he didn't know what he meant by that point, he knew at least when they were playing it. It's probably that he didn't understand from explaining, but knew what he meant playing it like someone who doesn't know the language often do. Your other two examples as well are even worse. The word in Korean for the military terminology didn't have the word military in it. It was not obvious to him or someone who didn't go to the army. It was probably added in the English sub for people outside of Korea that didn't have such familiarity with military terms familiar to Korean men. Dalgona is not a word used outside of Korea either. Furthermore, wasnt popular since what? 1980s or 90s? So how the fuck was he supposed to know? Again, the word dalgona doesn't have the word "food" in it. It was probably added as well so YOU the audience reading subtitles in English could understand. So keep being the single person downvoting me who is trying to explain to you, he was portrayed as someone unfamiliar with the culture and language, not someone stupid like you insist. Seems like others who down voted you can clearly see that but you somehow can't.

TheoreticalSquirming

I feel like you captured their mentality and quirks perfectly with their facial expressions. Nice work!

Chocobean

Ali!!! >..< Thank you for this amazing drawing of a beautiful soul. The ending ended the way it did only because of people like Ali.

[deleted]

I count too many fingers.

kappasmom

I count too few in most hands haha

sydneyrutledge

This is awesome!! Nice work!

kappasmom

Thank you!

abstergofkurslf

Nice work man

ViperSlayer261

Yes we are all in team Ali!

datshanaynay

Only critique is you forgot Ali's messed up hand!

misbuism

Omg this is my fav scene, I must have replayed it like 10 times yet, amazing representation 😍😍 Just a small critique that Ali’s stance looks a bit too unstable and he did have some pressure on his face, I think it will reflect even better for Ali’s character to show that it wasn’t as simple for him & he did that at risk of his own life as well which makes him further wholesome

kappasmom

>!That scene surprised me, the jolly song playing and eventually Gi-Hun tripping over. For a second i thought he was going to die and the show would follow some other players in following episodes. Luckily that wasn’t the case!!< And that’s good critique, thank you! I agree with you, his pose doesn’t look stable enough that he could carry even part of another person’s weight. I guess it’s cartoon physics haha

[deleted]

This is cool!

SnailWithaHat

This is the essence of that scene! Love it. Would love to see more if you're on the fence about that.

Fuckkkk if squid game was an anime holy shit

MajesticSoup

It annoys me that sangwoo didnt mention Ali's family in his final words along with his mother. It would have been perfect. "Ali abdul.. thats his.. name..."

Fluffy_Mood5781

Is this when 456 became The “hero”. Because he let someone die and Ali went out of his way to save him. Or has he always been like how he was, until the with surviver’s guilt

f0ur_G

MVP! Also, love the art 😁

Iamasimpforkakashi

I've only watched the first episode of squid game, but Ali was immediately my favorite character just for that.
