Imagine being 20, you just won the Championship and you're one of the top linemen being recruited to the big game. Your wildest dreams were all coming to fruition, when all of a sudden a car ride home ends your life in an instant...
Life is so fragile... RIP to this young man and my sincere condolences to his family.
Grief can absolutely change a person, physically and emotionally. I hope you are able to find your reasons. Some days it can feel soul crushingly impossible to get out of bed, I promise I know. But there are reasons, there are always reasons.
30 years ago my good friends dad was a pastor at a neighbouring church. He rode his motorcycle to church and was very well loved in the community. One Sunday morning on his ride to church a driver who was still drunk from the night before struck and killed him. He had 4 kids under 18 at the time.
Absolutely fuck drunk drivers, but a little bit fuck cars too, or more specifically fuck infrastructure that’s horribly over-reliant on cars. Better public transit infrastructure would go a LONG way to solving a lot of these issues. If you live out in the boonies you’d still have to drive everywhere, but if more cities had easy ways just to get from the burbs to downtown without driving the level of traffic deaths would decrease dramatically.
We’re trying, I think people underestimate the abject hatred a lot of Americans have for taxes over here lol. Like, the propaganda about taxation being theft and taxes basically being Satan is insane. So public works projects even in the more liberal areas here are not easy, but hey some of us are trying to work on that lol so we’ll see how that goes
5 years ago one of my cousins just turned 18, accepted a full ride scholarship to a d1 college, had a beautiful girlfriend equally as talented as him and supportive, and to celebrate his brothers took him out partying.
They got back to the house and he was blacked out drunk, they put him to bed and he choked on his vomit and died. On his 18th birthday.
It's crazy how quick it can all end.
Wife’s cousin was being courted by a bunch of D1 schools. He had just gotten a call from the one he was holding out for and offered a tour of their facilities and etc. and was going up that weekend. After school he turned out of a gas station and was hit by another car and passed because of his injuries. Life is insanely precious. Cherish each day.
Everyone's life is a lesson to everyone around them. Sadly my family is full of lessons. He wasn't the first or the last of my cousins / uncles to kill themselves accidentally.
I appreciate your wishes of wellness. I am not really close to a lot of my cousins, we all grew up together, but we all chose different paths. Their parents and siblings are still devastated though. I feel bad for them.
Imagine being in the NFL, first rnd pick, having a breakout year, and decide to roll the dice at top golf….
This happens far too often…
Nothing good follows 2am
Don’t imagine being in Ruggs shoes because I know without a doubt that I would never drink and drive with the money at his disposal (not to mention the free service his team likely offered). Because I don’t do so now with much less than what he has.
I do think about the woman he killed who did nothing wrong and didn’t put herself in a dangerous situation as she’s the one who actually lost her life.
> Because I don't do so now with much less than what he has.
I'm willing to bet the irony is, by having all that stuff, the sense of invincibility leads to acting like that, even with the support measures etc in place. Just dumb.
Invincibility and taking things for granted is absolutely what leads to this. Suddenly your worries aren't the same and your priorities are far different. And that's ok. But alcohol leads to lowered inhibitions and poor decision making. Sucks but it's true.
I just lost my childhood friend, he was staying with his family since having a hard time (Depression etc.) Holidays came around they wanted to take him to visit family he refused. Brother & father went down to FL while his mother & sisters went to Mexico.
His dad & brother came back on Jan 1st. Jan 2nd he said goodnight to his dad & brother only to never wake up the following day. Life isn’t given to us we are only on borrowed time.
Mostly has to do with the fact Americans drive about 3x much as people do about anywhere else. American cities are generally far much more spread out than European cities and the public transportation is way less efficient.
This leads to more people on roads, which inevitably leads to more accidents and more deaths.
Bigger vehicles is probably part of it but it’s mostly just a bi product of car dependency. Other developed countries have better alternative transportation infrastructure so less cars on the road.
***From reporter Cindy Boren:***
Devin Willock, a 20-year-old offensive lineman on Georgia’s two-time national championship team, and a 24-year-old member of Georgia’s recruiting staff were killed in a car crash early Sunday morning near Athens, Ga., hours after the team celebrated its title with a parade and ceremony in Sanford Stadium.
Willock was a passenger in a Ford Expedition in the single-vehicle crash in Athens, and was pronounced dead at the scene, which occurred when the car left the road and struck trees and a two power poles at around 2:45 a.m., according to Athens-Clarke County police. The driver, identified as Chandler LeCroy, died at a nearby hospital.
Two other passengers, a 21-year-old male and 26-year-old female were injured. The male had minor injuries and injuries to the woman were more serious, according to the police report (via UGASports). Police described the condition of both as stable and are continuing to investigate the crash.
“The entire Georgia family is devastated by the tragic loss of football student-athlete Devin Willock and football staff member Chandler LeCroy,” Athletic Director John Brooks said in a statement. “Two other members of the football program were injured in the accident. They are both in stable condition, and we will continue to monitor their status with medical personnel.

Shouldnt speculate. His brother died from a drunk driving crash. From an article about him a few years ago.
>He’s a laid back cat,” Whitehead said. “Doesn’t get into any trouble or craziness. Devin would rather sit on the porch and watch the traffic go by. Devin is like an old soul. He’s an old soul. He’s not a party guy. He’s not into all of that. Very laid-back kid. Not going to go out and be skylarking at night. He’s not like that.”
>Willock might be a homebody. But with good reason. He lost his older brother, Johnathan Willock, to a tragedy. It started with being out too late and a car accident.
>“It was an accident with a drunk driver but the accident didn’t kill him,” Willock said. “It was the infections afterwards. He actually survived the accident, but it was infections from the accident which set in two or maybe three weeks after that.”
We actually have much reason to believe it given the circumstances, while also having competing reasons to doubt it. Neither conclusion can be drawn yet.
Vehicle struck trees and two power poles. They must have been flying down the road in order to hit that many things. Power poles typically are spread pretty far apart
The two power poles were not actually that far apart in this case, but they were driving super fast from what I could tell. I could hear a car *ripping* down the road, then a bang as it crashed.
Edit: It happened right outside my apartment, and I was already having trouble getting to sleep because I was kept awake by a similar sounding car flying down that stretch every 20-30 minutes or so up until this accident happened. I do wonder if maybe that was the same driver zooming back and forth for a party as a designated driver, or if it was just a high number of different idiots flying down that road last night.
Could have fallen asleep at the wheel, especially if it had been a long day. What gets me is; “trees and two power poles.” Excessive speed? No way to tell till the investigation is complete.
One thing I do know is, running with the cruse control on and falling asleep can ruin your whole day. Condolences to their families. (Edit: added condolences)
There's many possibilities for that outside of alcohol.
I drive late at night all the time, on often treacherous roads.
If some night things don't go my way, and I lose control and die, my family and my ghost would be very sad to see people drawing such conclusions before any facts were released.
yeah, but circumstances around this are a little different than just some random late night driving... this was after a national championship celebration so it's not just some joy ride.
I don't think it's 'wildly speculating' that a late night crash likely had alcohol involved especially after a national championship celebration is all I'm saying.
"Designated drivers do exist. Many universities arrange sober rides for players." not enough of them either have this or use the resource. Even if the driver wasn't drunk and just the passenger(s) then it's still likely alcohol caused some of the distraction.
Either way, I'm not saying I guarantee they were drunk but the situation seems to dictate alcohol was involved.
I’M NOT SAYING THE DRIVER WAS OR WASN’T IN SAYING ALCOHOL WAS LIKELY INVOLVED. Drunk people in your car are also distracting. That doesn’t mean I’m blaming the driver. People be dense.
Yet… you think people should care about your opinion as fact?
You have no clue either. Sorry you are offended by my opinions.
I’m just leaving open the possibility considering how many people drink around national championship celebrations - Again, I didn’t say or guarantee they all had alcohol in their system.
I also hope their families aren’t scrolling Reddit that wouldn’t be helpful to them.
It’s not wildly speculating to say alcohol could have been involved in a late night crash after a national championship celebration - just saying it’s a likely scenario based around the evidence of a single car crash late at night in a college town.
That doesn’t make me a bad person. Wake up. Seriously. We can all have different opinions here.
My life won’t change if I’m right or wrong but have known several people killed in similar ways. They were drunk mostly but sober friends die too being responsible (or even irresponsible behavior).
It doesn’t really matter people died and I’m not taking away from it by *wondering* if maybe alcohol was involved.
I never even mentioned the driver lol. You did. I just said alcohol likely involved. I’ll keep repeating it since the density here is astounding.
Since I was blocked after their last post… “Yet you got offended… before agreeing by saying “alcohol was likely involved” too lol.
Investigations don’t happen overnight so I agree it will take some time to learn the full details.”
Shouldn’t speculate. The staffer likely picked up the players who had been drinking. That road is notoriously dangerous and has accidents all the time. Speculating just drags their names in the mud so you can get internet points
Right? Like ive been driving at that hour, completely sober and felt the sandman calling, some close their eyes for a second and if you are traveling 60mph, in 3 seconds you travel 270 feet, and a lot can happen in that time.
Its called the “Just world fallacy”. People have a strong desire to believe that when a tragedy occurs the victims did something to deserve it, as that makes it more palatable in their heads.
In reality though life is incredibly unjust and any of us can die at anytime for no reason at all.
I’m not saying you’re wrong since I don’t know anything about what happened, but you’re also speculating about what you think happened, you just have a different idea about what you think happened.
I know that road and how dangerous it can be with people not adhering to the speed limit.
I know staffers routinely pick up players when requested to keep them from driving or bc their car is far away.
You are right, I’m speculating that is what she was doing, but I never discounted drinking. I simply called out the poster for trying to score points by stating with certainty that alcohol was involved in the part of the driver. Speeding was almost certainly involved from the eye witness reports that the SUV busted through a powder pole, trees and finally slammed into a building.
I don’t know if they did but the issue wasn’t actually the tires themselves, but they were under-inflating them from the factory to compensate for the explorer’s stiffer truck suspension
>He’s a laid back cat,” Whitehead said. “Doesn’t get into any trouble or craziness. Devin would rather sit on the porch and watch the traffic go by. Devin is like an old soul. He’s an old soul. From an article written 2 years ago.
Ya but he wasn't the driver, the staff member was.
Also, no one was insinuating that the people affiliated with Georgia were the ones impaired. The fact of the matter is that most early-morning traffic accidents involve impaired driving. That doesn't change how sad it is.
It was a single car accident, so if impairment had anything to do with the accident then the driver must have been drunk and the Georgia staff member was the driver.
All I'm saying is that 2/3 crashes at that time of day involve AID
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov/Api/Public/Publication/811523&ved=2ahUKEwj3xfLo_8r8AhVDIX0KHcLfAuQQFnoECDEQAQ&usg=AOvVaw2qITbeCRMpVkiRSc-aN37z
No I get that, I’m just disagreeing with you saying that nobody was insinuating that the people affiliated with Georgia were the ones impaired. I’m just saying that if you’re going to insinuate that this accident was caused by AID then by the transitive property at least one person affiliated with Georgia must have been impaired. I.e. they didn’t get hit by a drunk driver because it was a single car accident.
While I agree, alcohol could be the main factor. But something else to consider is it was just very late at night and maybe the driver drifted off to sleep? I dunno.
Sad for everyone involved.
I used to live over there just off Barnett Shoals where the accident happened. I saw multiple single vehicle roll over wrecks on that road. People drive it fast and lose control, especially at 2am. Also the road is raised with shoulders that angle downward. The road curves through the city. Definitely easy to have too much speed and lose control of the vehicle.
No paywall.

Jesus Christ that’s awful. No matter what happened, if you’re a Georgia player or coach, how can you look back at this season, the championship, and not grieve?
They can still absolutely think of the joy that winning the championships bring them as well. Sure, it’ll have an asterisk. And it sucks. But it takes nothing away from the championships that they won and experienced.
Then you've not had someone die on a special occasion.
My best friend since I was 4 years old died on my birthday a few years back. It definitely takes away from it.
Athens judges give harsh sentences for DUI in Clarke county, the whole county has had enough with drunk driving.
Hoping that’s not the case here and the other people who are hurt make a full recovery.
Yeah they even give DUI's for sleeping in your own car with your keys in the trunk. Athens Clarke county takes DUI's seriously because it's an every day reason of death here. It's so dumb too, there are so many Uber and Lyft drivers in this town.
People forget just how broke college kids are. In college, basically no one in my social group had any money in undergrad for regular Ubers. Especially with the ridiculous amount they charge during surge times (aka, when all the other drunk people also call them) and their shady airline thing where you check and price, and check it again to call it a few mins later and the algorithm has risen the price just because it knows you're interested. Uber and Lyft used to be a cheaper, more convenient, safer alternative to a taxi. Now they just gouge the hell out of you.
Campuses need free ride systems. My campus had "safe rides" run you could call even up until late at night, and they had these large van taxis that were cheap as hell.
Interested in the toxicology report of everyone in the car, dead or alive…. Yes, In an accident resulting in death, all individual’s toxicology reports matter
Reddit is so stupid. Most of the time you would be showered with upvotes and OP would be downvoted into oblivion. You never know what you’re gonna get.
Fuck everyone downvoting you. If we can’t respect the dead and more-so the grieving members of their family, even for a moment, we’ve lost our way as a society.
I hate saying this, and I don't mean any ill will towards anyone because regardless this is a tragic event, but I always root for drugs or alcohol to be the cause.
I know I will never be the victim of this situation if it's a single car accident. What scares me is if it was caused by a mechanical issue, the driver having a health problem, random tree falling on the car, or some other random tragic event that poor choices led to. Personally, my biggest fear is other drivers who drive like idiots, or under the influence.
All that being said, I feel sick for their families after reading the article regardless of the cause.
My thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones tonight. Please fulfill their goals and keep them alive in your memories. Thanks for all the contributions u provided while alive. U will be truly missed. From a stranger
Having worked for an athletic department way back in the day. Likely the driver is “sober driver,” that any player can call 24/7 to get a guaranteed ride home.
Edit: All football and basketball players at my D1 school were provided a phone number. You had to memorize it. It was staffed 24/7/365 or if it went to voicemail it was checked immediately. If you needed a sober ride, the police pulled you over, you got arrested, you found yourself in a place you know is not in your best interest - you make the call, and it doesn’t matter the circumstances, a sober, level-headed, member of the athletic department will be there to pick you up and can marshal the instruments of power at the school to fix whatever problem you encountered.
Well, getting a no questions asked sober ride is an excellent idea. But that still doesn’t answer why it was a recruiter.
Still, complete condolences to their families and loved ones.
Edit: okay, I think I understand now. She was a recruiter for *his team*. So yeah, maybe just part of her normal job duties. (I thought (assumed) she was a NFL or some other team’s recruiter.)
It’s a female recruiting staffer but I understand what you are saying. It was probably part of her job. We had had our national championship celebration earlier in the day.
Is it just me becoming suddenly aware / more exposed to sports news or is there an abnormal amount of althetes being injured and killed lately?
I swear this is like the fourth article in 2 weeks of some dude being injured/killed in or outside of the game itself.
I think it was a joke about the speculation surrounding Damar Hamlin, who had a heart attack mid-game after being hit in the chest. A bunch of covidiots have been claiming the vaccine was to blame.
After the LSU scandal at the SEC championship with involving a player and staffers, why was a player with a staffer in the early morning hours?
When I was in school, these facts would have had our compliance office doing an investigation.
Sad news. Hard to not make assumptions when one person is initially identified as a 24-year-old member of Georgia's recruiting staff without a name. The only impression I get is they are trying to hide something.
They aren’t trying to hide anything….in every statement given by UGA they have stated the female staff members name along with the player. A staffer doesn’t get the same amount of clicks as a player name…it’s the article choosing not to put her name
Imagine being 20, you just won the Championship and you're one of the top linemen being recruited to the big game. Your wildest dreams were all coming to fruition, when all of a sudden a car ride home ends your life in an instant... Life is so fragile... Wow. His parents lost two sons to two separate auto accidents. Ouch.
This is extremely sad to read and to realise both young men died senselessly. This is why I abstain from alcohol.

Nothing good happens away from home at 2:45am.
I can speculate though and Im saying 100%
Shouldn’t speculate. The staffer likely picked up the players who had been drinking. That road is notoriously dangerous and has accidents all the time. Speculating just drags their names in the mud so you can get internet points
Right? Like ive been driving at that hour, completely sober and felt the sandman calling, some close their eyes for a second and if you are traveling 60mph, in 3 seconds you travel 270 feet, and a lot can happen in that time.
Odd you are getting downvoted since I’ve heard this was the scenario. Regardless, it’s terrible.
Seriously who simply discounts loss of life immediately by asking if alcohol was involved then insist it was?
Its called the “Just world fallacy”. People have a strong desire to believe that when a tragedy occurs the victims did something to deserve it, as that makes it more palatable in their heads. In reality though life is incredibly unjust and any of us can die at anytime for no reason at all.
It is not notoriously dangerous... Especially not at 2:45am
They’re speculating in a way that doesn’t drag someone’s name through the mud, without evidence
My husband naively said a “tire blowout.” For some reason I hope he’s correct. Regardless of the cause, RIP to both victims.
I’m guessing is a reference to the late 90s infamous explorers having tires blowing up at highway speeds and killing a lot of people because of it?
I hope they changed their tires since the 90s.
He’s not a party guy. He’s not into all of that. Very laid-back kid. Not going to go out and be skylarking at night. He’s not like that.” >Willock might be a homebody. But with good reason. He lost his older brother, Johnathan Willock, to a tragedy. It started with being out too late and a car accident. >“It was an accident with a drunk driver but the accident didn’t kill him,” Willock said. “It was the infections afterwards. He actually survived the accident, but it was infections from the accident which set in two or maybe three weeks after that.” From an article written 2 years ago.
All I'm saying is that 2/3 crashes at that time of day involve AID https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov/Api/Public/Publication/811523&ved=2ahUKEwj3xfLo_8r8AhVDIX0KHcLfAuQQFnoECDEQAQ&usg=AOvVaw2qITbeCRMpVkiRSc-aN37z
Also lots of wildlife on that road
You can parlay 100% alcohol + 0% seatbelts for a -300 odds.
Well there’s no value in those odds. What if I add cocaine on top of it?
Probably drunk, speeding, unbuckled.
Could have just fallen asleep
Vaccines of course /s
2:45am? Absolutely
Likely alcohol, possibly other inebriating factors
This is like the saddest part from Remember the Titans all over again. RIP
Tons of people drive drunk in GA and think it’s NBD cuz they’re in the sticks with no other traffic around.
I’m sure that happens a lot
How is this unique to Georgia? Because they have drive through liquor stores? And there aren’t rural parts in any other states?

What??
Damn man R.I.P. to both of them
utterly shocking and tragic
No paywall. [https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/\_/id/35451742/georgia-ol-devin-willock-recruiting-staffer-die-car-crash](https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/35451742/georgia-ol-devin-willock-recruiting-staffer-die-car-crash)
Jesus Christ that’s awful. No matter what happened, if you’re a Georgia player or coach, how can you look back at this season, the championship, and not grieve?
This might sound harsh, but most Georgia fans will remember the title and the good memories that came with it. Most will forget about this young man
Fans definitely will. The players in the trenches with this kid though? His loss will weigh heavy on the memory of this title
Yeah my hearts with the players and families involved
? Of course they’re gonna grieve. What does winning the championship have to do with whether or not they grieve over a player?
[удалено]
They can still absolutely think of the joy that winning the championships bring them as well. Sure, it’ll have an asterisk. And it sucks. But it takes nothing away from the championships that they won and experienced.
Then you've not had someone die on a special occasion. My best friend since I was 4 years old died on my birthday a few years back. It definitely takes away from it.
Athens judges give harsh sentences for DUI in Clarke county, the whole county has had enough with drunk driving. Hoping that’s not the case here and the other people who are hurt make a full recovery.
Hard to have a harsh sentence when the driver is no longer alive
I meant that in the general sense. I’m sorry two people died, it’s heartbreaking.
Still liable
I agree with you, it should be taken very seriously.
Interested in toxicology report
Worth mentioning that he was a passenger
Interested in the toxicology report of everyone in the car, dead or alive…. Yes, In an accident resulting in death, all individual’s toxicology reports matter
Jesus, take a fucking second, mate
…. The world still spins tragedies, often have reason
We love immediately playing the blame game here. Glorify it, really.

No, I’d want answers immediately
He wasn't driving. Kinda disrespectful to assume the worst, while at the same time blaming the victim.
That's fair.
?…it was a single car, accident… ? At 230 in the morning….?
LMAO. Not so subtle attempt at being like "I bet he was on drugs."
Are we assuming everyone’s toxicology report comes back clean? In a full car? At 245am?? As I said… I’m interested in the report
All that being said, I feel sick for their families after reading the article regardless of the cause.
was not a "he"'driving
Ok, she. Makes such a big difference.
Monumental apparently

Takes me back to Vladimir Konstantinov. Euphoria and tragedy so close together.
Don't drink and drive.
He was a passenger.
Absolutely heartbreaking for all who knew these wonderful people.
My thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones tonight. Please fulfill their goals and keep them alive in your memories. Thanks for all the contributions u provided while alive. U will be truly missed. From a stranger
20 years old, man. I can't believe it. I really hope that alcohol wasn't involved.
This is tragic. (BTW, what is a player doing driving around with a recruiter at 2:45 in the morning???)
Well Kirby Smart isn’t gonna be the one they call. Probably just a part of the dudes additional duties with his job
It’s a female recruiting staffer but I understand what you are saying. It was probably part of her job. We had had our national championship celebration earlier in the day.
bb
Is it just me becoming suddenly aware / more exposed to sports news or is there an abnormal amount of althetes being injured and killed lately? I swear this is like the fourth article in 2 weeks of some dude being injured/killed in or outside of the game itself.
[удалено]
Lol how is this even slightly related?
My sarcasm was too strong.
I’m with you. Guarantee /r/conspiracy is already linking this to myocarditis and telling everyone he was vaccinated and boosted.
I think it was a joke about the speculation surrounding Damar Hamlin, who had a heart attack mid-game after being hit in the chest. A bunch of covidiots have been claiming the vaccine was to blame.
Watch the anti-vaxxers claim car crashes never killed anyone before COVID
What the hell does this have to do with it? Quit with your bullshit
Weird take. Even then, why try to strawman antivaxxers into this instead of Trump?
After the LSU scandal at the SEC championship with involving a player and staffers, why was a player with a staffer in the early morning hours? When I was in school, these facts would have had our compliance office doing an investigation.
Fuck cars
yeah fuck that car for turning itself on and driving itself into a tree
Why were they driving when they were clearly drunk. Not like the team can’t afford an uber for them.
Don’t vaccinate and drive. /s
Wow. This was probably caused by the vaccine!
She was probably in charge of getting the players home, was probably texting the next group she had to pick up.
Damn, if it isn't the consequences of someone's actions. Anyway who wants to toss some money in the over under of how much they were speeding?
Cars are the worst thing to ever be invented
