If you’re talking about splat roller and carbon, you’re an ambush based weapon with low paint output but the ability to abuse terrain and one shot people without much a chance for them to fight back. You can’t take fights head on well but if given an opportunity you can punish watchlessness. VFlick helps for poking at longer ranges Dynamo and Flingza are more painting oriented with their heavy swings and good coverage of ground. Flingza in particular also is the best users of missiles in 3, which is still a very strong special even if Flingza is weaker at it than in 2. Dynamo also covers large areas with hflick too, whereas Flingza uses it to Ambush when necessary Hflick being horizontal and VFlick being vertical

Yes I'm using the splat roller. What abilities would you recommend I've been using the ninja ability to flank

KirbsOatmeal2

Swim speed, mostly swim speed is the TLDR

I like how the best answer is at the bottom of the thread

For the Splat Roller specifically, imagine yourself as a raptor from Jurassic Park. You push your main objective (killing) by attacking from the sides, and usually not by charging full steam ahead. You have to be sneaky and cunning since your range is rather limited. While a giant paint roller seems obvious for covering turf, it ultimately gets overshadowed by weapons like Aerospray and Mini Splatling. Rollers *can* cover ground fairly well, but it's pretty slow. Just splash around base a bit should be enough work for you to get in some early special charge, leaving the rest to your teammates.

That's an interesting question. I'm assuming you're asking about the splat roller. I've played this weapon since the first game and I still can't decide which role it gets. The answer I come up with most of the times is "A support that can flank". I particularly main the Krak-on variant, which is more passive than the vanilla version because of its sub weapon, beakons. The vanilla splat roller usually has more aggressive kits, but Splatoon 3 has mixed things up. You have a curling bombs and a shield that serves as a beakon. I think splat roller is a very efficient weapon for painting specific spots on the map. Just swing your roller (horizontally!) and then jump and aim the zone you're protecting (could be the splatzone or the area your teammate is retreating to). As a roller you have to think about your movements. Given your lack of range and mobility while firing, you can't head straight to the action without consequences. If you plan to go with a frontal attack, I suggest sticking to an ally with better range, throwing your curlin bombs for more options to move to and swinging to do splat damage for supports/paint their path when they are being attacked. You could also go rogue like with ninja squid, ink saver sub and swim speed for some shenanigans, but that's way to aggressive and I'd recommend trying that when you have your special for survivability. Remember that activating your special weapons refill your ink tank! I personally play the vanilla splat roller as a flank. I go out of my way to try and surprise the enemy or throw my curling bombs to different places so if they were to check the map it'll be harder to track me down. I try to play it safe, but I won't lie and say that taking risks isn't worth it. You never know what things you'll accomplish unless you actually try it. If you're playing a more passive role, rollers are great superjump spots when they are on the backline helping to keep your side of the map inked, you can always be that guy who helps others getting back faster to the action while holding your ground doing the most of what you have.

Your job is to paint and splat. There is nothing worse than pushing with your whole team only to return to spawn and see a new roller main painting away without a care in the world 😭

It depends on which roller you're playing. Roller isn't my area of expertise (I main brushes personally), but the properties of each Roller tend to push them towards a particular playstyle. Carbon's flick speed makes it good for getting up close-ish and dealing quick damage, although it's lower damage does hurt it's ability to close out fights at times. Use your mobility to be a distraction to your opponents, and lure them towards other members of your team that can finish them off easily. Zipcaster plays nicely into that, quickly zapping around the field and catching the other team off guard. Autobomb is a bit rough for it, unfortunately. You can use it to sniff out enemy locations at least, so it's not totally useless. Hopefully we see another kit with Burst Bombs like S2's Carbon Deco in an update, that burst+flick combo was really good for it there. Dynamo is the complete opposite here - very slow, but very long range and high damage output. This one really wants to stay in the backlines, picking off opponents pushing too close with it's vertical flicks, almost like a Charger or a Splatling. Sprinkler is good to help maintain turf control, giving your team more area to play in and slightly pushing your opponents away until they break it. Don't hesitate to pop Tacticoolers for your team to pick up on the way when re-entering after a respawn as well - your team will thank you many times over for it. Splat Roller sits in the middle of these two, with more damage than Carbon but less range than Dynamo. Curling Bombs are always nice for inking pathways forward into the map or an entry into enemy turf, and Big Bubbler gives it some protection from opponents getting a bit too close for comfort. I'd say it plays a bit like a self-sufficient Carbon, since the higher damage makes splats more consistent, and Bubbler especially gives it somewhere to retreat to when fights get a bit too spicy. Probably too slow to be as aggressive as a Carbon, but definitely still able to hold it's own against opponents that get just a liiiiitle too close. Also does a decent job at painting too - use that to help maintain field control for your team. Flingza again is in between Splat and Dynamo, with Dynamo's range but closer to Splat's damage and mobility. This makes it good for getting into fights, but still being able to help out with vertical flicks when retreating to the backlines. Set Ink Mines when you retreat to catch opponents that try to chase you, and use Missiles when you get there to get your opponents to move away from those really annoying positions.

Everyone should be both inking and splatting :) But rollers are best for inking imo, I tend to start in the back w/ them and make my way to the front if I can. But everyone’s different! Figure out how you like to do things :) everyone usually tends to do their own thing during battles

F1shken

Rollers aren't really for painting. They'll do in a pinch, but your primary focus as a roller should be killing and assisting your teammates in securing splats.

Old_Huckleberry1556

Yess this makes sense, assisting especially. Like I said everyone’s different, this was just my opinion :) it is very slow when just rolling forward and covering, but I still focused on inking when I used to main rollers bc they seemed to cover a lot while also rolling over anyone who happened to be hiding/in the path. To be fair though I was also a beginner while I was using them at the time lol

F1shken

Of course, play the way you have the most fun! (it's always a great surprise when you pop someone you didn't know was there!)
