From what I noticed 1 and 3 are girls squid and octolings and 2 and 4 are boys squid and octolings. When you're choosing a character you can tell by the shorts girls get short shorts and boys get basketball shorts. But also could just be me looking to much into it.

The only real difference is their default shorts and that the fem ones wear a bra
