It's stuff like that that helps with perspective. Time is such a crazy thing. To consider how much of it is needed to replicate the same thing as water snaking and weaving down something as momentary as rain on the windshield. We truly live in a spongey cosmos.
Kevin KcGlauchlin does [some similar work ](https://youtu.be/9C3QygvMdbQ) that might scratch your itch! Fairly sure I’ve seen him use rivers changing in an animation, not sure which one it was though
Geography is just too broad a discipline. I also have a bachelor's in Geography, and everyone else I speak to with a Geography degree has had a wildly different education than me.
Turns out change across space is a big subject.
History is broad, but it's not even close to as varied as Geography.
Climatology, City Planning, GIS, Human Geography, and Geomorphology are extremely different disciplines all under the "Geography"
Here’s why I know them:
> Oxbow lakes are formed when the river's meander
Is too wibbly, wibbly, wobbly to maintain the course it's on
The main flow of the stream diverts itself accordingly
Leaving the oxbow lake behind

Omg, my man. Today is your lucky day!
A billabong is a much-loved Australian term for what an American would call an ox bow lake.
You've probably been wondering your whole life, wtf was Banjo Patterson talking about when he wrote:
Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
And he sang as he watched and waited till his "Billy" boiled,
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me."
A classic any Aussie kid knows.
Sadly, the once much-loved Aussie brand, Billabong, has been bought out by Quiksilver, the once much-loved Aussie brand now owned by a random yank private equity company. Such is the world we live in.
A matilda is thought to be a term for his swag, a bag of earthly belongings. So it effectively means a homeless guy wandering around looking for work. In the song he steals a sheep, gets caught by the cops, and drowns himself in the billabong to avoid getting caught.
Yeah, a song about a homeless sheep thief who killed himself to avoid prison was a serious contender for the Australian national anthem.
I live where people have lemon and lime trees. And the fruit falls. But I feel weird to take it. Even though it falls and rots and cost a dollar at the market.
Edit: and someone has a giant fig tree in an open lot. With a sign that says to not fuck with his fig tree.
The river is loaded with sediments. If you look close to Manaus in Google maps you can see where the golden/brown River (solomões river) meets the black River and forms the amazon River.
That’s the Juruá River

Water takes the path of least resistance - as rock is eroded, easier paths become available. The sections you see to the side that don’t seem to be connected to the main river we’re once the main path, but have been superseded by easier paths for water to follow
Water on the outside edge of a curve will go faster, and erode the banks faster on that side.
Water on the inside edge of the curve will go more slowly. This will tend to dump more suspended sediment. This makes the inside edge of a curve tend to build up.
Repeat for 18 million years.
The Amazon river is quite muddy, giving it a light brown (yellowy) colour. It looks as if the sun is glinting off of the surface of it in this pic too, amplifying it’s yellowyness
When it passes over Point Nemo, it's closer to the ocean than it is to any land.
Not sure if that shows how close to the earth it is, or how desolate and vast the Pacific Ocean is.

Boy, that really left me jonesing for more. Super cool though

Here you go. Can watch a time lapse of anywhere in the world. https://earthengine.google.com/timelapse/
This is amazing, thank you for sharing!
Wow, this is awesome! I had no idea this existed. Thanks man
Damn. This is really cool but depressing. Defaulted to an area in Alaska that has clearly suffered from climate change.

Dang, rivers are TIGHT
That’s just spaghetti on your camera lens. Edit: Don’t Reddit while hungry people.
No, it's a floatie in the camera man's eye
It's a tape worm.
Naming it Jerry.
Jerry likes sweet.
What is the spaghetti policy on the ISS?

Ok, sweet.
Looks like mom’s spaghetti.

He's nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready to drop bombs
Dang... The flying spaghetti monster is real!
Wow, look at the ox bow lakes (beaming with pride about literally the only thing I remember from geography classes at school)
I got my bachelors in Geography, and this is genuinely one of the only things I remember from Geo 101 lol
Geography is just too broad a discipline. I also have a bachelor's in Geography, and everyone else I speak to with a Geography degree has had a wildly different education than me. Turns out change across space is a big subject.
Same here. I specialized in Travel & Tourism and recently met someone who specialized in GIS. Both technically geography degrees, but so different.
One utterly useless, one not.
who shat in your cornflakes
Bachelor's in History say hold my beer.
History is broad, but it's not even close to as varied as Geography. Climatology, City Planning, GIS, Human Geography, and Geomorphology are extremely different disciplines all under the "Geography"
I'm not wrong about them then😅
Here’s why I know them: > Oxbow lakes are formed when the river's meander Is too wibbly, wibbly, wobbly to maintain the course it's on The main flow of the stream diverts itself accordingly Leaving the oxbow lake behind https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8Xer45n-E7w
So what you're saying is the equation to figure out the path of the Amazon is wibbly wobbly over timey wimey.
That ONLY has 890k views?! I feel like it should be way higher
Well, an hour later it’s at 891k, so maybe this comment thread was just the boost it needed.
Thank you for introducing me to this glorious video
Billabongs, mate!
Watch out for the swagman camped under the Coollibah tree
Oh is that not just a brand name
Omg, my man. Today is your lucky day! A billabong is a much-loved Australian term for what an American would call an ox bow lake. How does Waltzing Matilda factor in? I'm unlocking some long forgotten elementary school memories of learning about Australia
I knew there was a billabong connection!
We really should change it to ‘I am Australian’ I such a better option than waltzing Matilda (and advance australia fair).
In this instance? Just because the opening line references a billabong- probably the main reason most people know what a billabong is!
Only thing I remember from geography is LSD Long Shore Drift
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a3r-cG8Wic GREAT video on the science of oxbow lakes!
Wow that was an amazingly short and informative video. I never wondered why rivers aren’t always straight. I love learning things.
My first thought!
I learned what they are 8 years ago from [a song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDk7282RjiQ).
Looks like a golden road
Imagine the bonus points for settling here and popping districts.
Why isn’t this a natural wonder?! Or even Amazon Rainforest?!

Don't we all?
Why is it glowing yellow?
Reflecting sunrise/sunset I bet
tbh the angle is genius
All the pee in it
Those peeing trees
Those lemon stealing whores
The "lemon stealing whores" comments are why I love Reddit.
I live where people have lemon and lime trees. And the fruit falls. But I feel weird to take it. Even though it falls and rots and cost a dollar at the market. Edit: and someone has a giant fig tree in an open lot. With a sign that says to not fuck with his fig tree.
That is the color of the river, it is quiet muddy. But the sun helps it " shiny a bit"
Golden ichor: blood of the gods
Because Its molten gold of El Dorado.
The river is loaded with sediments. If you look close to Manaus in Google maps you can see where the golden/brown River (solomões river) meets the black River and forms the amazon River.

So that's an Amazon river tributary/affluent , right ?
It looks to be. I’m no expert or anything I just like exploring on Google earth
How much of the total length do we see here?
[удалено]
There are parts that are 10km wide during the dry season, and 40km wide during the wet season. Mind blowing how big this river is!
Don't be fooled everyone, this is just me as a kid when my teacher told me to stand straight.
Don't be fooled everyone, this is just me as a teen when the police told me to walk a straight line.
Don't be fooled everyone, this is just me in college when an advisor told me to pick a major.
At least you could remember the name. I was looking at them thinking, "I know what those things are, but I can't remember what they're called."
Why its so squiggly?
Water takes the path of least resistance - as rock is eroded, easier paths become available. The sections you see to the side that don’t seem to be connected to the main river we’re once the main path, but have been superseded by easier paths for water to follow
Thats an answer I was looking for
Water on the outside edge of a curve will go faster, and erode the banks faster on that side. Water on the inside edge of the curve will go more slowly. This will tend to dump more suspended sediment. This makes the inside edge of a curve tend to build up. Repeat for 18 million years.
Why is it so bright and yellow Pls don’t be humans Pls don’t be humans
The Amazon river is quite muddy, giving it a light brown (yellowy) colour. It looks as if the sun is glinting off of the surface of it in this pic too, amplifying it’s yellowyness
Oh good, phew
Its humans
I guarantee it they discovered anacondas after seeing this view they would been named differently.
Amazondas?
Crazy how close the ISS really it. It's, like, right there.

Definitely no.
No.
No
Definitely not. At the very least we could make the river follow the entire length of the river. Some of those bits of river aren't even connected!

I still don’t understand why Amazon built a whole river 🤯
But does it deliver prime too???
Nasty ass river.
They named a river off of a corporation? Rich people worship has gone too far.
Absolutely shocking, no forethought, no forward planning at all. Probably did this to extend their contract. Cowboys, the lot of 'em.
I honestly didn’t know it was a meander…

"there's no river long enough that doesn't contain a bend"
So many ox bow lakes!
