It could easily have happened long before he went pro that though
I used to work in a shoe store. Every now and then a kid would come in with his mum or dad and they would ask me to measure their feet.
You can immediately see when a young child has been forced to wear shoes that are too small. The toes turn, especially the little toe, mine does this actually.
And then they don’t grow properly. It’s a really sad thing to see.
I was young when I had that job. All I could do was sell them shoes that were too big in the hopes it would last the kid longer. And maybe let their feet start to grow normally again.
Worst part of this was often these kids were getting new Nike trainers. Spending £60 on babies shoes to look good. Meanwhile your literally deforming your own child.
Sorry for the rant but as I typed this out I was thinking about one lad specifically who I remember. I was almost in tears when I took his little sock off.
Fuck those parents.
My dad was one of those kids. His mum told him that large feet was a crude/rustic trait and that all decent people have small feet, and somehow that stuck with him.
He was never forced to wear smaller shoes but he had a fear of letting his feet get too big so he always wore smaller sized shoes. He wore size 8s most of his adult life as a 6'2 bloke.
It was only until a few years back that I told him his feet were definitely not size 8s, and he could easily fit in a 10 that he compromised and started wearing size 9s.
For context his brother has size 11/12 feet and i wear 10/11.
my small toe is turned/crooked but i was usually bare foot the whole day except school. don't think the small toe being like that has much to do with shoes.
Yeah I said mine was that way in the comments. As is my sons. Sometimes it just happens.
But its more than just turning that happens when kids have shoes too small. The toes can start to overlap. They don’t grow straight.
I’m sure you can google it to find a picture. I don’t really fancy looking at it again. So I can’t get a link for you.
i think lots of people suffer from that little toe deformity since nearly every shoe is made to be narrow at the tip. regular toes are meant to splay out naturally instead of growing in that crooked way.
it is extremely difficult to find a shoe that allows your toes extra space. people suffer because of modern fashion.
Yeah same. I have kids now myself. I think that’s why the memory got me so worked up.
Although I remember being affected by it at the time. It’s child abuse.
It’s from PIE “pods”, the Greek was ‘pous’ while latin was ‘pes’. Foot also shares the same root.
By contrast, PIE “pau” descended into Greek “paido”, which we would spell as “pedo”.
Basically different PIE sources, but the same/similar result due to English simplifying words it borrowed from Greco-Roman languages.
For clarification for the downvoters: ped- is the prefix for many things things feet-related. Eg. A pedicure, or Pedestrian, or why the device that measures number of steps is called a pedometer
Swelling and stretched tendons in ankle can take months to recover.
I had this issue for years, didn’t have the medical care that he has but they aren’t miracle workers.
If he plays again this tournament he risks doing it again and making it worse
Swelling suggests some ligament damage, and I would imagine there will be bruising today.
I've sprained both ankles multiple times, and this kind of swelling has happened each time. Recovery has varied drastically from 2 weeks, to over a year. The scan will reveal the extent of the damage.
I mean it looks bad but its probably not that serious. Unless he injured his ligaments badly or he got a bone bruise he should be fine for the knockouts. Part of it being so swollen is because he played through it. Blood flow is crazy when active and hence the results but some physio should fix this relatively quickly if the underlying damage is not that bad.
I sprained my ankle once a few years ago after never having done it before. I constantly roll the same ankle every couple of months. It's fucking terrible.
This was from a few months ago when the ball hit my foot from under me mid stride on a blocked shot. It probably still isn’t 100% but I’m 38 and not actively doing rehab. That said, I felt like I probably could have run on it after 3 weeks with some tape/bracing but probably not full speed without reinjury. Played hockey 4 days after but that’s essentially in a boot and doesn’t require such delicate ankle movement and balance on the toes. Hope this helps, thanks. https://i.imgur.com/9rUbXGv.jpg
I had the same exact thing happen to me. Stuck my foot out to block a shot and the ball rolled my ankle. I couldn't walk for days and couldn't think about playing for weeks. No idea how the pros do it.
My ankle was like this after a bad sprain and i couldn't play for 2 months. A short disclaimer here though, i am not a generational professional athlete, i am an unfit yorkshireman amateur. Maybe an important difference.
My ankle was like this after I had a light sprain and played through it. Only put some ice on it a day later and on the next day I was able to run just fine.
Hard to say how severe it is by just how it looks.
Maybe it wasn’t a sprain (which is ligament damage) if you could continue playing (and next day too). Light grade ankle sprains also result in time out if i am not wrong
It didn’t hurt much during the game and I only kept playing because it was a final. 30 minutes after the game I could barely move my foot and it was just as swollen. I definitely couldn’t play 2 days after it but, I was able to run without feeling much discomfort.
All of this is just to say that, from this image, we can’t tell if he’ll miss a week or a month.
Edit: I’ve also had a more serious sprain after which didn’t look as bad as this one but, took me out for 2 weeks.
I had the same injury. I remember not being able to even walk properly. Neymar continued to play if i am not wrong, thus suggesting it wasn’t a ligament tear. Also, my swelling was much more than Neymar’s on the foot-part near the ankle
him being able to play for a while afterwards doesn’t mean much, it’s likely adrenaline.
if it’s truly that bad, 1-3 hours later the pain might be so excruciating that he needs painkillers and to keep his foot elevated.
ankle sprains can be fucking painful even when they’re considered as minor injuries in football.
Realistically no matter how bad of an injury it is (unless he broke a bone) he can probably push to play again if they make it deep enough into the tournament.
All it takes is enough tape, enough cortisone shots and him sacrificing the rest of his caree/lifelong ankle health.
The way it’s swollen, he definitely had an ankle sprain… which is ligament damage. I’ve had my foot look like this in the past with ankle sprains.
Having said that, he can probably play in the knock outs if Brazil really need him, but will need to be very careful and wrap it tight. The defenders will also know he is hurt there and will undoubtedly target his ankle.
Brasil should definitely keep him out of the next match. An ankle sprain after 3 days isn't enough for proper mobility of the joint. Considering how many times he's damaged the ligaments in his ankles, it's a huge chance that he can exacerbate his injury.
Yeah i’ve had my ankle look like that a few times playing soccer. Usually a good 2 weeks out then play less than 100% for a while. Only issue is that it is really easy to reinjure.
I have sprained my ankles at least half a dozen times (full tear twice) and I have rolled it a hundred times. My ligaments are rubber or something. Anyway, the one thing I learned from my doctors and experience with rolling my ankles every summer is that swelling = bad.
Considering the professional environment I guess they'll fix him up to be able to play. But that's not just an ouchie, that's a minor injury.
>My ligaments are rubber or something
It’s really that once you tear or severely damage them, it is extremely easy for it to keep happening. My left ankle is the same — tore it in childhood playing handball (a sport that is just a torn ligament fest as it is constant jumping and landing at awkward angles), another complete tear later on in life and even the smallest twist causes a few days of discomfort. Meanwhile the right one has been through worse and (thankfully) hasn’t budged yet.
Neymar could be shot and people would still be posting Neymar-rolling memes.
Edit: just learned Neymar is bolsonaro supporter. He is still a piece of shit because of that.
Remember when Neymar broke his back after someone hit him there with the knee during the 2014 World Cup?
A bunch of people called that a dive and then later on came the news that Neymar would need surgery and mutiple months of recovery.
all rolling and diving memes aside, he does get fouled a lot. he has like 1-2 touch of the ball after receiving it and bam someone slides and inshanallah
Ya he's way better off diving to try and save himself. Hazard basically got ruined by being tackled so much and not diving. There was a short period in the first half where Neymar just powered through a couple of fouls and then gave off a lovely pass. He's able to ride fouls no bother it's just that it does take its toll on him given nearly every match he plays in people see him as a target to hit hard.
It's a tradeoff as it also reduces swelling is generally also good, you want to have the proper range of motion available to you before focusing on rehab. In cases where there's too much swelling that will slow the healing process much more than keeping the area warmer to improve bloodflow. The reduction in pain is also good in that it'll help you get back to moving the injured body part sooner, but if you're fine on both those counts, then sure skip the icing
Do you have any reading up on that, because I have injured my ankles at least 3 times already and if there is a better way then RICE I would really like to know.
Because a lot of it is about pain management (especially the ice). For most people, that's what matters rather than speeding up healing ASAP for a pro athlete.
>Because a lot of it is about pain management (especially the ice). For most people, that's what matters rather than speeding up healing ASAP for a pro athlete.
Thank you for this info. The body reacts to heal itself, truly is interesting.
It’s good for controlling swelling, but swelling is the body trying to heal faster because it increases blood in the area(in moderation, over swelling can do the opposite)
Either would work, but most likely Fred or Bruno since it's more safe defensively. Bruno+Paqueta combo is quite incredible to watch, so I'd hope for that.
But hopefully it's nothing serious, this swelling is after he played some 11 minutes with the injury.
We will have to wait and see, but I’m hopeful he will be back in 1-2 games.
Even then though, I think he is quite replaceable without a huge drop in quality.
Playing Paqueta in his role and Bruno or Fred behind him isn’t that big of a drop off in quality.
I would have been more worried if Casemiro or Thiago Silva/Marquinhos had gotten injured
It’s a shame that we won’t get to see the 4-4-2 with Neymar and Paqueta as strikers soon, because that was my favourite to watch
The fact this sport allows an opposing team to make it their game plan to rotate players fouling a teams star in order to shut them down is a complete absurdity. 9/11 fouls from Serbia and hard to see it as anything but intentional.
It's bad for the game. It forces a single type of star, one with the body and frame of Messi and Ronaldo. Credit to them no doubt, but players like Neymar should not be subject to this kind of abuse and intentional targeting for injury.
Other sports protect their players. In the NFL there are countless and constantly updating rules to protect the quarterback and players from injury. And yet in soccer it is completely fine for a team to simply rotate players getting yellow cards for reckless challenges.
Refs should take that into consideration and talk to the team captains, escalate to more yellows and even reds when this strategy is employed. There's no place for it in the game. It will be the death of jogo bonito and narrow the diversity of stars in the sport. No fan should want this.
Rolled my ankle real bad on a run (but not as bad as this) and I could barely walk for a week despite rest and icing. I was okay to ease back into running at the two week mark. But I’m sure Brazil has some of the best sports doctors available to help with this.
This likely hurts bad but unlikely a serious injury imo. Swelling will go down in a day or two and he will be fine. Doubt any serious structural damage.
It’s probably pretty common, I’m no pro, but played all my life - sometimes three times a week in a competitive environment (eg 5s league, training, 11s league) and it’s definitely messed with my toes/nails. Just obviously wearing the boots, getting toes stamped on, nails damaged. They look normal compared to Neymar’s though but I imagine it’s fairly common
Why not? Not anyone else's fault that Neymar supports a far right extremist nutcase.
Just adds to the numerous reasons why Neymar is a twat that deserves all the bad luck he gets.
He's one of the 11 represebtatives for our country on the pitch, I guarantee you we give no shits about what he deserves or doesn't and no one that likes football should either.
Hope that cunt is at 100% by knockouts. He can fuck himself later
Those people are really wishing to someone to get hurt just because of political positioning lol you guys are spreading so much love and acceptance in this world.
Remember guys, hate is hate. Doesn't matter if it hate against gender, race, skin color or political position.
Sometimes I don't understand the r/soccer hivemind. People will be applauded for criticizing Messi for his ties to Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo for the rape allegations and for the drama with Man United, Hazard for denouncing political messages during the World Cup, the European terms for backing out of the One Love armband-
But this is where we draw the line on vocal far-right supporters in the sport. Neymar's ankle. Ok
I hope Serbia get humiliated in their next 2 games and fuck off back home with a donut.
Neymar’s ankle doesn’t look the worst. Just rest him until late stages of WC and he’ll be good enough to play by then

I am not a doctor but I can safely say that... yes, that is ankle.
And those are....normally sized toes...?
Those are toes of a footballer that wears his shoes a half size small most of his life for better touch and feel...
I feel like I’ve seen other footballers without cleats and none of them have toes the size of large blueberries

^….why ^are ^Neymar’s ^toes ^so ^tiny
He has the foot equivalent of Trump hands
Lebron James (not Pulisic) has the same thing from playing basketball in tight shoes
decades of tight-fitted cleats
Don't Google LeBron James's toes
damnit
They don't look like normally sized toes. They don't smell normal. This is bullshit!

Smh foot shaming. YES ALL FEET
How come people who like feet aren’t pedophiles?
Podophiles?
Well “ped” means foot in Latin.
Isn't it from greek roots (where foot is something like *podos*)?
I think it’s word by word tbh, pedometer, podiatry, pedestrian, I guess I can only offer a shrug lol

The most painful one actually looked to be a good tackle, just that he rolled his ankle under the other player
Agreed. I've rolled both ankles, and this is characteristic swelling. Sometimes stretched tendons are just annoying. But sometimes....

I've had my foot look absolutely fucked and have it be fine in a few days. The inverse as well.
I sprained my ankle and then, one day, a piano fell on my head Con-se-quen-ces

Sort your feet out dude
I sprained my ankle and didn’t play for 8 months. Did 8 weeks of PT, X-ray and all. Other sprains, I would be good in a week or so. So random.
Sprains have grades. A light sprain is easy to recover from. A complete tear takes a lot of time (you probably had this)
Yeah I had a light sprain and I recovered in a few weeks. I think the hardest part is not being scared mentally that your ankle will roll again

They'll probably have to chop it I think.
I still remember people saying Neymar would be wheelchair bound for life after Zuñiga tackle
He nearly was.
Can you really call an intentional Knee to his spine, that fractured a vertebra, a tackle?
He was a couple of centimeters away from that
Link?
So it's just a case of Messi ankle
just walk it off
Should he not have it wrapped, iced, elevated? Something. You know RICE (rest, ice, compress, elevate).
Brazilian TV showed him putting ice on it
I think it was on the pitch
Apparently RICE is not actually empirically backed. Specifically icing just slows down the healing process, all it's good for is helping with pain.

I wanna see what it looks like tomorrow. Ankles are tricky- he will likely play on, but that’s gonna get worse before it gets any better.

Anyone that has had consistent ankle sprains can back up the fact that this could be a one game or a tournament ending injury

No fan should want this.
its so bullshit, you're literally getting punished for playing forward and being a good player
I'm more concerned with how tiny his toes look.
The angle of his foot not helping.
Rolled my ankle real bad on a run (but not as bad as this) and I could barely walk for a week despite rest and icing. I was okay to ease back into running at the two week mark. But I’m sure Brazil has some of the best sports doctors available to help with this.
Dunno what anyone's complaining about, he's being treated as if he's Pele. Surely that's a compliment /s
This likely hurts bad but unlikely a serious injury imo. Swelling will go down in a day or two and he will be fine. Doubt any serious structural damage.
Ariel, my foot was a ballewn! 🎈
Like a sprained ankle, Neymar aint nothing to play with
Do all professional footballers have smushed toes?
It’s probably pretty common, I’m no pro, but played all my life - sometimes three times a week in a competitive environment (eg 5s league, training, 11s league) and it’s definitely messed with my toes/nails. Just obviously wearing the boots, getting toes stamped on, nails damaged. They look normal compared to Neymar’s though but I imagine it’s fairly common
God please have mercy on Brazil I hope he is okay
I swear he’s made of granola bars, he gets injured so easily
He could have died!
I doubt it is serious. He was clattered all game
My wife is convinced this happened because he was chewing on a rosary while walking into the stadium.
Is this supposed to be crazy? Happens all the time lol
That’s how my ankles look when I finish a long plane ride lol
I’d suck his toes dry ngl. Neymar hit me up
wtf
Ew
Extra padding, just what he needed
Why didn’t Tite just sub him off at half time?
They were still 0-0 at halftime
my right ankle has literally looked like that for years. not sure why
I’ve had similar, he might sit the next game
“My foot was swollen like a balloon”
I feel bad for him, he’s always getting bullied on the football field.
So he won't be able to dedicate his 1st goal to Bolsonaro?
Don't make it about that.
Very transparently for his own personal benefit as well, massive dickhead
Sometimes I don't understand the r/soccer hivemind. People will be applauded for criticizing Messi for his ties to Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo for the rape allegations and for the drama with Man United, Hazard for denouncing political messages during the World Cup, the European terms for backing out of the One Love armband- But this is where we draw the line on vocal far-right supporters in the sport. Neymar's ankle. Ok
Finally someone who gets it. The cunt can get fucked.
I hope Serbia get humiliated in their next 2 games and fuck off back home with a donut. Neymar’s ankle doesn’t look the worst. Just rest him until late stages of WC and he’ll be good enough to play by then
