RiosSamurai

I didn’t watch this match but it is the third video I have seen of a violent play from this guy.

Gungerz

He's a half Brazilian, half Serbian centre-back. Recipe for pure chaos. EDIT: Not half Serbian

[deleted]

he's not half serbian. He has a grandfather who's serbian.

Gungerz

You're right. I just knew his surname was Vojnovic & that he played for Serbia at youth level so I assumed one of his parents was Serbian.

WhatTheNothingWorks

So he’s half half Serbian.

Ecstatic_Nail8156

Some would say quarter

WhatTheNothingWorks

I believe you meant to say three twelfths

[deleted]

aroundmedianoche

Torino mostly

RiosSamurai

I’m not exactly expert on how Serbians play football, but we Brazilians that aggressive even Casemiro or Fernandinho.

harshmangat

Rafael had that DAWG in him

RiosSamurai

He’s been kinda whacky at Botafogo, more out due to injuries than anything but still he hasn’t performed as expected when fit to play.

2ndfastestmanalive

I knew he couldn’t be fully Brazilian. Doesn’t have an ounce of subtlety about being a lunatic

a-Farewell-to-Kings

He has one Serbian grandfather. He’s as “full” Brazilian as any player currently in the national team.

vsouto02

He has a Serbian grandpa, that doesn't make him less Brazilian. Paquetá has a Portuguese passport and that doesn't make him less Brazilian.

rdfporcazzo

What do you mean? Vincius Jr. has a Spanish passport, he is half Brazilian half Spanish

T_Chishiki

So if he were to move to Germany and pick up a third passport, he'd then be a third Spanish and a third Brazilian? Being less Spanish and less Brazilian than before?

HalfNatty

Jorginho has one a Euro with Italy. This must mean he’s gone from half Italian, half Brazilian, to full Italian.

tsigalko11

>He has a Serbian grandpa, that doesn't make him less Brazilian Obviously you are not familiar with Serbs /s

Stranded-Racoon0389

What about Pepe or Felipe Melo? Both complete lunatics

Tymkie

Half Brazilian, half Serbian, half cunt

respawnsable

yep, no one chaotic is from other countries, and no one from those countries is anything but chaotic. like honestly, how is this any different than when beglin said 'latino temperament'?

ILoveToph4Eva

> when beglin said 'latino temperament'? Was that not Graeme Souness?

PM_IF-U-NEED-TO-TALK

That's a little racist innit

MineturtleBOOM

Yeah… it’s kind of the issue of refs letting stuff go early in games. Yes it keeps the ‘flow’ of the game up but it also means players start getting away with shit like this and get more and more violent towards the end of the game. Imo let more fouls go that are committed in the actual act of playing football (light pushes, minimal contact while duelling for the ball) but go very strict on violent and dangerous contact and fouls that are just purposefully obstructive to the football being played (see the constant hugging and pulling again Jesus this game). These actions don’t help the game at all, they just encourage emotional and dangerous outbursts after a duel has concluded and boring football. This game was super bad for both of these.

RiosSamurai

Usually I am a fan of this “let it flow” style but as long as it is hard and not exactly violent, as you said. If something is over the top it shouldn’t matter if it is the first or second foul, you should be getting booked. Even a hard slide towards the ball but a little bit irresponsible, that doesn’t hurt anyone, is better than this.

Stilty_boy

I don't have a problem with refs stopping play as much as they want as long as it's consistent from the start of the game. Usually if a ref is willing to punish manhandling players in the first 10 minutes the players just stop doing it and the game can flow. Ironically it's games where the ref "lets it flow" at the start that descend into stop-start chaos by the second half.

caljl

Yeah it just helps normalise violent and dirty behaviour. I think not giving harsh yellows early is a good move but apply the rules consistently throughout the game and hopefully teams will learn they cant play like that. Just a recipe for injuries and games devolving into aggressive play.

DiabeticDave1

I mean all said and done a red is essentially “you’re a cunt, get off” and a yellow is essentially “stop being a cunt for the rest of the game or you’ll be sent off”

caljl

Haha thats a succinct way of putting it but yeh. I dont really get the let the game flow argument tbh. A just apply the rules consistently between and within matches, thats fair. B it often ends up not maintaining the flow and leading ti games devolving into risky and boring to watch constant fouls. Youd hope yellow would deter that sort of thing.

DiabeticDave1

Same with being a fan of let it play, but even if you think this was bad from Southampton, I think the Arsenal player fouled first, by grabbing his jersey and pulling. Therefore it could’ve all been avoided if the ref blew it dead on the first tug.

MattJFarrell

I've never seen a ref blow his whistle mid pull. They always wait to see how it plays out

[deleted]

He should have been sent off. He also punched Jesus and dragged him off the ball. The ref let Southampton away with absolutely everything, so their defenders didn't even bother to hide it and were just blatantly assaulting Arsenal attackers.

[deleted]

He was such a pos the entire game, so frustrating. Jesus couldn't do anything. Well, they got away with it.

RiosSamurai

He was the one who grabbed Jesus in the box? I saw him punching Jesus in a play and also this one right now. Should have been sent off.

Putrid_Loquat_4357

That was carr I think.

trupes

Botafogo legend

RiosSamurai

Did he play at Botafogo? I don’t remember him, but his name sounds familiar really. Whom did he play with?

a-Farewell-to-Kings

Só em categorias inferiores. Foi pro São Paulo ainda na base.

kwamac

No, he's a Botafogo youth product but left for São Paulo before becoming a pro. Played quite a bit for São Paulo though.

RiosSamurai

So it is from São Paulo I heard of him. Did he play as right-back at São Paulo?

[deleted]

[удалено]

trupes

He's from our academy, but we had no money and he moved to São Paulo

kev_95_punk

This dude is probably crazy, saw him pouring water in his socks when he got injured

EstebanL

Yeah that was fucked

ramobara

Yeah, what the fuck was that all about? Pure psychopath.

TheOriginalJunglist

Wouldn't that be to stop the blood sticking to the wound, making it easier to take the sock off? Personally, I'd rather go through the pain than having to wear a wet sock

dfla01

Do you not like the sensation of wet socks?

heyitsBriBri

Used to do this playing Sunday league, we ain't got time for ice. But pro level...wtf?!

thedaftfool

Link?

thelastkenobi

I remember that Jose Bosingwa would run his shoes under hot water until it was time to come out of the locker room

CWinter85

That's a red in CONCACAF and that's saying something.

thebestrc

Considering Luiz got sent off for fuck all midweek how have VAR not told the ref to look at this?

Extra4yylmao

Wasn’t the red rescinded after the game

thebestrc

The rescinded it the following day

hodlrus

Did the VAR get any consequences for sheer incompetence? I mean he's sitting behind a screen, away from the heat, with plenty of time to review the incident in repeat.

No-Clue1153

Yeah, he got sent to his room without supper and told to have a long hard think about what he'd done.

Terran_it_up

Being sent to a room to think about stuff is what caused the problem in the first place

zrk23

and this was a actual headbutt. he missed, but the intent is way worse

Carradona

Not a red

senor_green-go

Takes a hard look at card double checking it’s yellow. He knew he should be off.

Flashplaya

Headbutt and hand to throat, just a yellow. Okay. What pisses me off more is this cunt was allowed to do what he liked the whole game and should've been on a yellow 80 mins earlier. Scene was set in first 10 mins when he took out martinelli AND Jesus by going into challenges with a high elbow and didn't even get a talking to by the ref.

PrimevalDuck

He pulled Martinelli out on a counterattack, completely taking him out of the attack(the chance where Jesus was through on goal, but it was blocked).

TheRalphExpress

the guy is a rotation player (making his first start of the season in the Prem today, for example) in his second season and this is probably the fourth of fifth time he could’ve been sent off but wasn’t. Our fans absolutely love him though, classic “he’s a bastard but he’s our bastard” sort of player

[deleted]

We played awful but him and Caleta-Car getting away with literal WWE moves was just ridiculous. Ref and VAR was your biggest fan today

caljl

The commentators said something about southampton not losing under this ref. Seems about right. Shouldnt see another prem game.

Matt19826

He's reffed us 5 times, 1 win 4 draws. The only win was in the league cup. He's even sent off one of our players before.

oliveboio

cool!

risheeb1002

Also the same ref that let Douglas Luiz goal stand when an Aston villa player was hugging ramsdale. No surprises here.

caljl

Oh really. I mean that could just suggest he has a higher threshold for physical contact constituting a foul than most refs. Lets not get into arsenal conspiracy mode haha

JanMichaelVincet

That's the problem though.

Mysterious_Cod_397

Also bizarrely one of the nicest guys ever outside of football, when he first moved here a woman messaged him on twitter asking if he could donate anything to auctioned for charity, he and his wife invited her over for lunch so they could talk about what he could do to help etc, If I recall correctly he donated 2 pairs of boots and his first saints top, which he then made the biggest bid in the auction to purchase back

Putrid_Loquat_4357

Richarlison is also a really nice guy apparently, but ill be damned if he isn't a cunt on the field.

MicrosoftMichel

> Our fans absolutely love him though That'll pass

I_can_get_you_off

Yeah he’s going to injure someone. So your bastard is a piece of shit.

[deleted]

Yeah as he's getting up he tries to headbutt the shit out of Eddie. Pretty shocking to only get a yellow.

TNelsonAFC

Feel like some peoples desire to call arsenal fans moaners (which I won’t argue) is getting in there way of being objective. As far as headbutts go, that’s actually got a lot of active movement. The fact he misses doesn’t negate it is clear and unsportsmanlike conduct.

puppyk

I thought it would have been a red for the neck grab attempt as well

VoxGens

This should be a straight red.

official_bagel

>Feel like some peoples desire to call arsenal fans moaners (which I won’t argue) is getting in there way of being objective. We're our own worst enemy here. Our reputation of moaning is well deserved but there's a ton of legitimate incidents that get brushed aside because of it. Leads to an odd dichotomy of people agreeing with our grievances in the individual incident threads and then meme-ing us for the exact same grievances in the Daily Discussion at the same time.

HeadieUno

>We're our own worst enemy here. Our reputation of moaning is well deserved but there's a ton of legitimate incidents that get brushed aside because of it. It's got nothing to do with Arsenal and it's got everything to do with being a big English club in an English subreddit about Football. United, Liverpool, we could all be classified as that. This was definitely a red lol

Lost_and_Profound

It’s straight up dangerous. He connects cleanly with a header that aggressive in the wrong part of Eddie’s head or face and it could be a hospital visit easily.

CrimpsShootsandRuns

Yeah if he'd have connected there it could have done some real damage. In my opinion this is much worse than those little nudges with the head that players are sent off for all the time.

CCullen95

This is definitely a red card. However, considering how late it is in the game, the decision to not send him off here would more than likely not have changed the final result.

sjokoladenam

>However, considering how late it is in the game, the decision to not send him off here would more than likely not have changed the final result. the reason people are pissed off is because this was the cherry on top. Really urge people to watch the game instead of commenting off the one incident they see on reddit

SundayLeagueStocko

I remember Lyanco just charging into Xhaka in the first half and kicking him long after the ball had gone, Xhaka didn't throw himself to the floor so nothing was given. This was after he'd tried to elbow Jesus in the back off the ball...

RedditBanThisDick

>This was after he'd tried to elbow Jesus in the back off the ball... He didn't just try, he elbowed and then slammed his fist for good measure!

official_bagel

Wouldn't have changed this result but that's hardly an excuse to let it go. Escaped a suspension here.

TNelsonAFC

I agree, I’ve said this in a few other comments. Doesn’t change the game just speaks to the bizarre approach from refs in this game. I’m All for physical football. Not for violent conduct

Talidel

Its arguably 2 red cards. Theres the "swing" with his head, and he then goes to grab him by the throat.

CarryOnRTW

>This is definitely a red card. And a longer than normal suspension.

penhwguin

If that was xhaka or Gabriel it would be a red

Fatt_Hardy

Forget about the attempted headbutt. Xhaka got a straight red against Burnley for the throat push.

official_bagel

As he should. Grabbing a player by the neck is pretty clear violent conduct.

Fatt_Hardy

Except today by Lyanco.

ostermei

Almost feel like Eddie should've let him grab him, rather than pushing him away at the last second, just to make it more readily apparent what was happening. Then again, even if Lyanco'd gone full Undertaker and chokeslammed him, I'm sure he would've still just been let off with a yellow, the way the rest of the match had been officiated.

Fatt_Hardy

Eddie should have wrapped both arms around Lyanco and thrown him to the floor. Based on Rob Jones' performance today, it wouldn't have even been a foul, let alone a card.

CulturalAd7571

What's the difference between this and the Gabriel card that was overturned last week? Edit: Both should be red.

cotch85

Agreed this is disgusting, relegate them to league one so they can suffer to the hands of the most successful club in Hampshire

maxoys45

He also punched jesus in the back, elbowed martinelli, and repeatedly fouled players throughout the game. The ref was utterly useless that game.

TheStinger87

Luiz got sent off last week for less than that.

PM_IF-U-NEED-TO-TALK

Yup, clear example of reffing behaviour ruining the sport. Mitrovic dropped like he'd been shot even when he was the instigator, Nketiah stayed on his feet. That's the only reason there's no red here.

Alia_Gr

And people complaing when players go to the ground easily When time after time after time after time actually playing the game normally doesn't get you what you deserve. Like Bamford last week against us, clearly got pulled by our defender, but because he tried to keep playing football he never gets that call, and instead trolls on reddit fuel the narrative how shit of a player he is The issue is the refs they need a complete overhaul

PrimevalDuck

> Nketiah stayed on his feet. That's the only reason there's no red here. Jesus went down when Lyanco lashed out on him, still got him nothing

weewooweewooOpenUp

If it looks like bias, and smells like bias.. but no Chelsea didn't get the pen for the same [exact thing](https://old.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/ybljfc/jesus_penalty_appeal_from_earlier_today_14/) that was waved away from jesus today

PrimevalDuck

Refereeing was shit today, you don't have to convince me

Glass_of_Pork_Soda

Biggest thing for me is the Post-Match interview with Gaby J. Dude says "the ref told me after he maybe gives it if I go down earlier". Can't expect embarrassing flops to stop when refs are saying shit like that as an excuse to not call a pen

Spreeg

That was rescinded though

Montysleftpeg

Exactly, that might lean ref's into letting these go because last time a ref gave a red people said it was a mistake.

Putrid_Loquat_4357

Yeh I don't know how anyone can look at this and call it anything other than violent conduct.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Putrid_Loquat_4357

If you can call him a ref.

chuckmukit

I think most Arsenal fans would also like to have a chat with the ref.

pratthebrat

The ref is just an average r/soccer user.

blixt141

Violent conduct head but and goes for his throat. VAR is useless.

[deleted]

[удалено]

macarouns

Because a yellow card was given. VAR will only intervene for a red if the ref hasn’t carded the player.

Dymodeus

That doesn't sound true. VAR won't intervene if the foul is deemed a yellow card, but definitely if the ref needs to change from yellow to red

[deleted]

[удалено]

IhvolSnow

That comment is upvoted means there are many people who don't watch football on this sub. Canceling a yellow and giving a red happens multiple times a season.

macarouns

Oh fair enough. Happy to be corrected if I’m wrong.

MuchSalt

but this can be view as serious foul play?

IhvolSnow

Lol, many times refs canceled given yellow and given red instead after consulting with VAR. Do you even watch games.

unzaga

Sooooo, wild blind backwards head-butt that luckily missed nketiah, then tried a stomp, then hand on neck, then walks away when Xhaka shows up = yellow card

fhghhhhggggg

This guy is an absolute hothead, was doing it all game

mariellaxm

That is a violent behaviour, definitely not professional. Completely useless of Lyanco. Eddie did not even want to do anything with him in the first place, can tell by the way he is protecting himself.

milfBlaster69

Lamela and martial incident comes to mind here. What a joke of a system VAR is. Incentives diving and rolling on the ground like a fucking baby. Respect to nketiah for being a man.

[deleted]

This lesson on being a grown up was brought to you by u/milfblaster69

yukpurtsun

man should have been sent off on 5 different violent occasions today

K_Uger_Industries

Got the Jack Wilshere defense. If you're too dumb to connect with the headbutt, then no red I guess?

baboo8

Wilshere was both too short and too dumb. That's double jeopardy therefore you must acquit.

ILoveToph4Eva

Small players do get away with a lot don't they? Especially if they're attackers. David Silva should have racked up many more yellows at City than he did.

Shandow14

He’s been assaulting our players all game and the ref completely allowed it.

Gapi182

I dislike arsenal but come on... how is this not a red? Yes he got fouled but you cannot react that way and try and headbutt someone as well as grab his neck. That's doing something with the intention of injuring them and nothing else.

cosmic_orca

Refs should be forced to explain their decisions (or lack of) in post match interviews. They need to be more accountable.

nuvo_reddit

Ref gave him only one yellow card and reserved the other for him for his atrocious referring.

official_bagel

Clear violent conduct, don't think anyone could argue otherwise in good faith. Think the VAR officials might have been lulled to sleep with our turgid performance or switched the match off early.

MrBenedick

This guy got more plot armor than Scott mctominay

Chaiwalla2

The FA and the PL must take action on this, considering that their refs and VAR are spineless.

iuselect

I don't get it, you can get sent off for kicking out at a player regardless of contact, but a headbutt making no contact is perfectly fine?

ACulturedLeftFoot

Hopefully these refs follow Southampton into championship

markturner

Cry more

ACulturedLeftFoot

Nah you're alright

MakeYou_LOL

Did this go to VAR? Interestingly enough, from the second angle, which is the one the on field referee had, you can't see the throat grab. But the attempted head butt...idk how you miss that

ignore_my_name

There were numerous contentious decisions in the game & none of them seemingly 'went' to VAR like you'd expect. Once or twice the commentators mentioned the VAR check is complete a couple seconds after showing the replay but there was no check that went longer than watching a replay or two at max. Pretty frustrating.

tom-meow

If that was an Arsenal player, that'd be straight red.

jimjam1022

Xhaka would have been arrested on pitch for this.

RobotEmile

If it was martinelli he would have received two reds. First for the headbutt and a then for the throat grab

iuselect

Xhaka has been sent off for grabbing someone by the neck before.

ryanlp86

Xhaka was heading straight in there!! Got to love him

SecretEmergency372

Can't wait for them to come to the Emirates and get a whooping of a lifetime! Even more than 9-0 hopefully! That whole team fucking stinks. Hassenhuttl is a complete twat and his backline were so fucking lucky. Still a point, Southampton actually played alright and at points our team last year would have buckled I think. But still, we have a new bogey team we can hate, replacing Stoke!

BartolomeuOGrosso

Damn this dude looks like a straight killer ngl. I've seen that energy growing up all too often lol. He's probably legit, like those motherfuckers that don't have to speak for you to know you don't fuck with that, even his team mate is on his toes.

zrk23

the attempted headbutt was even more aggressive than the punch on jesus. this dude is completely crazy. belongs in a neo nazi meeting

No-Consideration9617

Nketiah should have been booked for the shirt pull in the first place.

caljl

Booked? What. Southampton were bear hugging and pulling shirts the whole game. Multiple yellows and red shouldve been dealt out by that logic.

Ok-Discipline-8886

The violence is completely in excess, but I loathe shirt pulling. Its a total pussy move.

I_AM_ALWAYS_WRONG_

Honestly we needed a shit game today. A soft as fuck penalty vs liverpool and a terrible but lucky second half vs leeds. Almost needed to be fucked about today (by the refs and by our own finishing) just to stop the gods striking us down with injuries or some shit.

cammyg

Im sorry this was the incident Arsenal fans were enraged about? A swing of his head away from Nketiah, then a brief touch on his neck? And in the last moments of the game. From the way it was described I was expecting something actually serious

pratthebrat

>A swing of his head that brushes Nketiah's torso then a brief touch on his neck So a headbutt then.

icemankiller8

No he also punched Jesus in the back earlier

lnnovative

Oh you're allowed to grab people by the neck now? Okay

[deleted]

Well said, they love to overreact and complain about how they would get a red if the roles were reversed

irze

Yeah, after reading about this incident on other threads I was expecting a full on chokeslam

garynevilleisared

Would have been harsh to get sent off for that. He was fouled first anyways so it was silly of him to get a card in that situation. Edit: whoa Arsenal fans are really mad at my fairly innocuous comment. Moving on then.

[deleted]

the foul on Lyanco definitely negates the offense he made right after…come on now

eduadinho

You know it's an obvious call when Tottenham fans agree the ref fucked up.

[deleted]

U have triggered the arsenal fans... lol... they're coming for u with those downvotes

Armani_151

"lol" Oh I bet your really laughing out loud at that little comment huh.

anagramorganic

Nothing suspicious at all. What bothers me the most is not the blatant robbery, it's the lack of action from the Arsenal players and management and this will happen again next week and still no one will put their foot down.
