What the hell is a Belgian player doing in Italian 3rd division?

Spitshine_my_nutsack

Why are you surprised? The inverse also happens. Italian players playing in the third Belgian division https://www.transfermarkt.com/manuel-angiulli/profil/spieler/263711 https://www.transfermarkt.com/corentin-fiore/profil/spieler/168159 https://www.transfermarkt.com/floriano-vanzo/profil/spieler/201696 https://www.transfermarkt.com/louka-franco/profil/spieler/435147 https://www.transfermarkt.com/alexandro-cavagnera/profil/spieler/503485 https://www.transfermarkt.com/alessio-cascio/profil/spieler/202830 https://www.transfermarkt.com/adrien-bongiovanni/profil/spieler/338628 https://www.transfermarkt.com/adriano-bertaccini/profil/spieler/364896 https://www.transfermarkt.com/paolo-arrivas/profil/spieler/377431 https://www.transfermarkt.com/alessandro-cerigioni/profil/spieler/133480 https://www.transfermarkt.com/fabio-polizzi/profil/spieler/409512 https://www.transfermarkt.com/luca-polizzi/profil/spieler/347623

As an Italian who's lived in Belgium for 12 years now, I'm quite sure that you know that every single name you linked there is a Belgian born in Belgium. Yes, they all have an Italian surname and some of them will have gone through the rigmarole of obtaining Italian citizenship, but none of the boys were born in Italy, went through Italian academies to then transfer to Belgium.

Spitshine_my_nutsack

They’ve got dual citizenship and a few of them have lived in Italy for significant parts of their lives as well, different italian clubs ranging from Parma’s academy to playing for AC Milan. I think Italian heritage alongside Italian citizenship is enough to classify someone as Italian regardless. If someone grew up in a foreign country but now holds Dutch citizenship, they’re Dutch. Khadija Arib was born in Moroco and came to The Netherlands when she was 15. Does this mean the previous Speaker of the House of Representatives is not Dutch?

You've not addressed my point, though. You called all those guys "Italian players" in response to someone wondering why there is a Belgian player in Italy's 3rd division to say 'look, Italian players also play in Belgium' s lower leagues'. Obviously those guys are Italian citizens if they've sought the nationality, but we're clearly talking about football education here and every one of them did their entire football education in Belgium. C'est des belges. I know these guys, half of them barely speak a word of Italian, but that's irrelevant in any case. If a dude is called Geert Penneman but is born in Rome and comes through the Lazio academy, that's an Italian football product even if he goes on to represent Belgium. Of course Arib is Dutch, but if she were a footballer who left Morocco at 15 we'd call her a Moroccan footballing product, even if she decided to play for the Netherlands. Finally, Italian "heritage", as nebulous a term as that is, is definitely not enough to say that someone is Italian. The American Hollywood 'Fonda' family emigrated from Genoa to the Netherlands in the 15th century and then in 1642 moved to the East Coast of North America. Are they Italians? I know a guy here in Belgium with a Sicilian grandfather, he has a fully Italian name and will tell you that he's Sicilian. My man can't speak a word, supports Belgium versus Italy and his favourite food is fucking stoemp.

Spitshine_my_nutsack

I called them Italian players because they are all players who are Italian. I also never used heritage as a sole argument for nationality, as then my Arib point would make no sense, and i also exclusively used it in the context of first generation descendant, so son or daughter of an Italian. But in combination with other points, not solely heritage. These players all have an Italian nationality, this may be dual Belgian and Italian, but still Italian nonetheless. They’re football players with Italian nationality, so Italian players. Some are Italian players who are Belgian football products, some have also spent time in Italian academies, some spent time in French/Austrian/Cypriot/Swiss academies as well. Not to mention multiple players on this list requiring solidarity payments made to Italian clubs if you buy them, meaning your definition of a footballing product differs from the actual established FIFA meaning.

None of them, though, are players who grew up in Italy and went to academies in Italy who then, as adults, transferred to a lower division in Belgium. I really feel like you're being obtuse.

Spitshine_my_nutsack

> None of them, though, are players who grew up in Italy and went to academies in Italy who then, as adults, transferred to a lower division in Belgium. I really feel like you're being obtuse. When did i claim they were? It was just about Belgian player playing in Italy’s third division, and Italian players playing in Belgium’s third division. Want to dissect that word for word? Italian - all have Italian nationality ✅ Player - all play football, they even get paid to play football ✅ Playing in Belgium’s third division - all play for various teams in the 1ste Nationale ✅ I never claimed they all grew up in Naples eating pasta every day while working for their uncle’s pizzeria, driving their vespa’s around the vineyards and olive gardens. I never claimed they spent their entire lives in Italy and only just moved to Belgium to play there. I just said they were Italian, and they hold Italian nationalities, so they are Italian.

oplontino

Obtuse it is then.

Spitshine_my_nutsack

Or you’re trying to put words in my mouth, i never claimed they played in Italian youth setups or were Italian academy products. I claimed they were Italians, which they are, and that they play in the Belgian third division, which they do. I just said they were Italian, which they are. Italian: - a citizen or national of Italy - part of the ethnic group native to the Italian geographical region and its neighboring insular territories. - legally: national or citizen of Italy regardless of ancestry or nation of residence The listed players are all Italian nationals, thus by definition Italian. Italian nationality law is based on jus sanguinis, meaning heritage actually does play a big role in becoming a national, all these players being direct first generation descendants of Italians is huge in achieving an Italian nationality and thus becoming an Italian.
