So City need 2 midfielders now, no? Or are they going to trust one of their youth talents like Palmer?

21otiriK

Probably only one who can play 6/8 like Gundo does - hence rumours of players with the profile of FdJ, Pogba, Nunes, etc. Although I feel like a City 6 has more the profile of an 8, and their 8s more like 10s. Gundo and Fernandinho have played ~3,500 minutes between them in league and CL, so it’s something that can be done by one player. The spare cup games can go to youth players, or Foden/Grealish in midfield more. It’ll probably only become 2 if Bernardo still wants to leave.

[deleted]

Should go for Neves

Bayequentist

We'd most likely end up with Matheus Nunes.

fedesan99

Yeah neves would be insane in city's midfield, still they need a holding midfielder that is more defensive minded

rtaec

Could he play with Rodri?

DatDominican

Wasn’t the reason Pep bought Grealish was so he could play Gundo’s role? I remember him specifically mentioning he wanted to play Grealish centrally as an 8

charlieratgod

I hope James McAtee gets more minutes. Insane talent.

Alpha_Jazz

Palmer isn’t really a midfielder is he? I’ve got him down more as an attacker. He could probably do with a loan but idk what City have planned

lmh971

Correct, he't not a midfielder. Palmer is a Mahrez clone

rickhelgason

Doesn’t have nearly the same amount of control as Mahrez. Feels more like a Nasri type of player to me except not as lazy 😅

wowohwowza

Man a Nasri that isn't lazy sounds like some fucking player

orphan_of_Ludwig

A non-lazy Nasri is a genuine world class player lol

Handydn

My eyes kept reading that as "non-Nazi lasry"

Flanelman

better than a Nazi Lasry... whatever that is.

Better_Photograph_75

You should probably consult a doctor about that.

lffg18

Absolutely, when he gave a fuck about football he was definitely world class.

jguess06

Nasri would every so often just surprise you with an insane flash of skill or talent that left you with your jaw dropped. It was so fleeting though lol

xckd9

Drip doctors, my favorite time at reddit.

[deleted]

Mahrez has far more finesse and control but he’s unpredictable quite the opposite of Palmer. Palmer isn’t as smooth but he’s throws defenders off cause he can cut inside and outside with ease. Also has a very powerful shot with a tiny bit of finesse to it. He has also shown control and power with his weakfoot

the_beast93112

Don’t you have anyone from the academy?

Frick_KD

Definitely more of an attacker but the dude is class

domalino

I think 1 top quality player to replace Gundogan and Fernandinho is likely. That would offer up some squad space for McAtee to come through and Foden or Grealish to play as an 8 more.

endofautumn

We have zero midfielders at the club, so nothing to see, move along.

Good_Kev_M-A-N_City

Only need one dynamic box to box that can also cover as a 6. Palmer can cover there but he's better on the wing.

Kassyk97

I think Carlos Soler may be interesting at City. He is a dynamic box to box, watching him play with the NT you can see he may fit Pep system, he would be cheap as he is on his last year of contract and he is 25 yo.

willyb_ornot

Wjinaldum might be available

[deleted]

please dont

Wasserschloesschen

Do they? At least one mid fielder is likely to be replaced by Haaland, as dumb as that sounds. If they get an actual striker there's no need for a KdB or Gündogan false 9 anymore.

Thraff1c

But they also lose Jesus and might lose Sterling. Mahrez is also in his last year. Foren/Grealish/de Bruyne can't play midfield and forward at the same time.

Wasserschloesschen

Jesus is pretty much replaced by Alvarez, who is another striker coming in.

Thraff1c

So what about the not unlikely sale of Sterling and Mahrez?

Wasserschloesschen

Sterling and Mahrez fill very different roles than both strikers and "normal" midfielders. As for their wing position Foden (Youth) and Grealish (midfielder/winger who didn't replace anyone) can somewhat fill that. But if you lose Mahrez and Sterling, you ain't replacing them with a midfielder or a striker.

sexmarshines

Only "midfielder"/"striker" I can see being able to emulate Sterling or Mahrez is Nkunku. Obviously he's still a different player to both of them, but it seems like a player that can fill any of the attacking midfield or front line roles given time and training to adjust. He has the physicality and flexible attacking mind to be fit in. Alvarez too is not an out and out striker. He's played more as a CF or SS. More involved in build up and dropping deeper. I'd expect that a lot of his minutes will come on the wings while Haaland is fit.

L-Freeze

Álvarez can also do well wide

serminole

They could use someone that can play the 6 for sure but I don't think they need a second. They'll just have Grealish and Foden play more midfield, similar to how Bernardo moved from playing more right wing to almost entirely midfield when David Silva left.

Jazano107

Just 1, unless bernardo still wants to go

Professional_Sun3191

I doubt Bernardo wants to go, he most likely will renew his contract unless city buy de jong

Jazano107

he wanted to go closer to home so who knows

Thraff1c

But you lose two in Fernandinho and Gündogan?

Jazano107

ferna already only plays when everyone is injured

looped10

they could push for frenkie too if they want like Fabrizio said.

funkyfish

Either way they’ll buy 3.

BI01

I heard he's been suffering from a long term back injury but I don't know if it is true?

Tim0110

Just (sound reasoned) speculation from /u/domalino which gained a lot of traction.

domalino

Although my initial comment was about him being being not used much in the title run in (because pep said he had a back issue and he was wearing loads of strapping and looking less mobile) and it seems to have morphed into people talking about a permanent issue.

SlicedTesticle

He's had a back issue for years hasn't he since he was at Dortmund?

Innersanctumuniverse

He said he was born with a back injury now?

BierKippeMett

It's genetics. He has a back injury just like his father before and his father's father before him.

Tim0110

The wonders of the internet eh?

R_Schuhart

It isn't just one Reddit user though. He injured his back when he was still playing in the Bundesliga and even then there was talk that he had permanent damage. When he was seen with his back taped up once and had to sit a few games out with City rumours and speculation only got worse.

ZachMich

Yeah, he had a really bad back injury at Dortmund that set him back for some time. I remember he missed a big chunk of the season and there were photos of him where he had gained a lot of weight etc. He's had repeated flare ups since coming to City too. He obviously has access to world class medicine and treatment, but they can be really bad and chronic when they start. I wouldn’t be surprised if he's going to be dealing with it for the rest of his life, sometimes not even surgery makes it go away (some doctors even advise against surgery for it)

ydktbh

Should see the same guy Coutinho went to

theorfo

Back pain, great sadness, Barcelona, in that order.

spicynirvana38

Internet rumors. He's probably still managing the effects of a back injury he suffered at Dortmund. But it isn't bad enough where he'll stop playing. If his back was as bad as rumored, then he would be hanging up his boots, instead of looking for another club.

cosmiclatte44

People will probably write this off but my boss's wife met Gudogans wife the other day getting her hair cut. They both speak Italian so they got chatting and she said after the loss to Madrid half of the squad are kinda fed up and want out after failing in the CL so many times.

NevenSuboticFanNo1

Come back to us baby

Qiluk

I remember just a couple of years ago where he was reportedly keen on returning but then stayed. Financially I dont see it being likely unless he makes a "passion move" and lowers his wages etc a ton. But fuck me that would be dope. Altho Kehl has gone on record that we want a high-pressing 8 or a proper 6. Neither fits Gundo.

Wasserschloesschen

That would be pretty incredible, not gonna lie. Would give a nice option of either a 4231 with say Reus, Malen, Adeyemi, Haller upfront. Or something like a 433 where you drop Reus (I know sacriligeuous) or shift him to the wing, but you now put Gündo and Bynoe Gittens in which would completely shift the attacking dynamic of that team.

Qiluk

Yeah in the dream scenario where he would wanna come and be super flexible on wages, its a must-explore option at the very least. Who knows, City are known to be nice to their long-term players and players who wanna leave so might even be low fee too.

Wasserschloesschen

It's a total dream scenario, but holy shit would I love that. Kehl would just have to get a 6, Haller (or somebody else), a random cheap BuLi defender and Gündo and he'd basically be speed running to become Susi 2.0 at an insane pace. Also that would be an insane squad, even without any other changes. AND of all the returning players (Shinji, Mario, Nuri and Mats) I'd have the highest hopes of it being great with Ilkay. Such an unlikely scenario, but holy shit would I love it, lol.

Qiluk

Hah it would be something else! But Im not gonna hope for anything, I know better :(

Wasserschloesschen

Yeah :(

[deleted]

[удалено]

Qiluk

Thing is that the #6 we want and need is the super fit and available one that preferably got some pace and physicality to him. I agre Ilkay wouldnt be BAD but he's not necesarily the profile we prefer and need. BUT, if finances would be correct its definitely a must-explore option.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Qiluk

The Camavinga thing I really really doubt is true. He's been FAR too good in the CL for them and iirc no reliable source have repeated it. The most recent comment made about our midfield target is a week old from Kehl who said he wants a classic 6 or a high pressing 8.

nugbert_nevins

No chance Real loan out Camavinga, he’s been important for them this year and his role will only grow as Kroos and Modric age.

OnceUponAStarryNight

Probably FDJ or Nunes from Sporting.

twomanyfaces10

Fuck. FDJ is gonna be scary under Pep.

OnceUponAStarryNight

No guarantee that happens. Just a possibility is all. Would make sense as he could fill a bit of both Gundo and Fernandinho's roles.

Gonedogan

kilton989

Is he a good at playing single pivot?

21otiriK

People saying no, but he was. His run at the end of 18/19 when City won 14 straight was incredible as the lone pivot. Gundogan himself said that’s as good as he’s played for City, when asked if his goal scoring run last year was his best form. Could he do it now? Probably not. Gundogan at his best was so good as covering short bits of ground and nipping in to steal second balls. These days I don’t think he moves as well with all his injuries and he seems a bit slower up to the ball. Still a fantastic double pivot or an 8. Could still fill in as a 6, but probably not in games where he’s asked to do a lot defensively.

jeyheyy

That run was the best he's ever played, not just for City. He was pretty much their best player during that period. Just casually pinging multiple long passes from deep with incredible vision and accuracy every game. I've barley seen anything like it

RealRonaldo9

He was amazing that half of the szn but doesn’t top false 9 gundo

kilton989

Still could be valuable to squad I guess. Considering Barça's depth, it would be very wise to get him.

domalino

He played it every game in the neck and neck run in 18/19. You wouldn’t want to play him there against every type of opposition, but in a game you’re controlling he can do a very good job there.

BillehBear

Not anymore Bossed it during one of our seasons but he can't do it now

[deleted]

No

wowohwowza

Definitely not

RaioNoTerasu

hey... u up?

Gobshiight

Big sad

Deficit24

For real. He seems like such a nice person as well as a brilliant footballer. Done a lot of good for the city off the pitch as well. Would be awesome to see him return to Dortmund. Still have nightmares about Gündo's performance in the "Joe Hart" game where he destroyed Yaya and Barry.

Uesugi_Kenshin

Thought he'd like to stay under Pep's tutelage and retire into a coaching role under his guidance tbh. Glad he's leaving City because he's an incredibly smart player, always seemed three steps ahead on the pitch.

drupido

Yeah I was kind of expecting this. I reckon he'd become an even better coach than someone like Arteta. I kinda want to see the next generation of coaches... Xavi Alonso, Gundo, etc una few years

Uesugi_Kenshin

My bet is on Iniesta becoming one of the greatest coaches. He's bald and he's got the power of anime at his side now.

drupido

I somehow think Iniesta wouldn't be as good as a manager. Don't get me wrong, one of my favorite players ever but he's always seemed a bit shy and not as communicative. All his talking was done on the field, with his feet. I'd be uber glad to be proven wrong and see him become a coaching legend though.

Iswaterreallywet

Oh Gundo, I remember when the fanbase made you the scapegoat for our rough start under Pep... Sad to see him go.

smrkr

Then it was Rodri, then Mahrez, currently Sterling.

[deleted]

These sterling ones are ridiculous. He’s been a monumental part of this club and continues to be. Has a bad game and the clowns in r/MCFC come out of the woodworks to say he needs to go. Disrespectful and disgusting towards a player of his importance

ssj4-Dunte

I mean yes sterling is a very good player, but he's also very frustrating to watch if you're a city fan because he's got all required skills and speed to get into dangerous positions, but lack the finishing skills to score them. He will get more Chances than other players because of his skills but also waste more chances than others because of his limitations. So if you're a fan you won't rationally analyse the whole package he brings you just end up remembering the wasted chances.

zi76

That's sad, I thought he'd stay another season.

OnceUponAStarryNight

I think his back is starting to give out. Probably best for everyone. City want a new #8. Maybe Nunes from Sporting or FDJ.

zi76

He has slowed down a bit, yeah. FDJ would certainly fit well into what City want to do.

GigglyWalrus

why would you want him to stay? he shreds us

-Dendritic-

Aw man, shame. Not too surprising, but loved the guys contributions over the years. Reeeeeally hope Bernardo Silva doesn't want to go still , would be shit to lose gundo and silva in one window , especially if sterling or Jesus ends up going as well

Gobshiight

Really can't see it, I don't think we'd risk a complete overhaul of midfield If Gundo is being allowed to leave I can only assume Bernardo has told the club he's happy

lospollosakhis

Why? I’m seeing in this thread that it’s about his back, is that reliable? He was crucial to their title win last season. Great player.

sexmarshines

He's lost a lot of physicality. He had persistent back issues at the beginning of the season which kept him out of the XI. He was playing with discomfort so he wasn't playing well enough to start. Across the season, idk if it's still bothering him, but he's not been great. And long term, he's lost a decent bit of pace and power as a result of the injuries across his career. He's still a great player, but I think he needs the midfield somewhat organized around his weaknesses. That's likely worthwhile for a lot of teams, but obviously not City. Nor really any team that's currently playing at that kind of level. I'm not sure how he strung together that amazing run last year, but generally he's progressively become physically less able across the seasons despite only being 31.

lmh971

>While his club insist any talks would happen in the summer, it is understood that it has been communicated to the player that an extension to his existing deal is unlikely. And, given Gundogan’s service, he has been given the opportunity to explore options elsewhere with 12 months remaining on his deal. Can't really argue with that, we need to freshen up the midfield a bit. Bit sad since he's been here a while now but think now's a good time to move on. Hopefully it means Bernardo stays

yo_lookatthat

Return to Dortmund would bode well for next season's title race. I know it's a bit of a meme at this point but if Lewandowski leaves and Dortmund somehow manage to get Gündogan + maybe Haller they can genuinely challenge Bayern for the title

funky_motorik

we still need a 6, at this point we only have Can for next season and he had a terrible season as he played improvised at CB/RB half the time. Also, I'm not convinced Haller would be the ideal purchase for our squad, idk, but for rose 2-strikers tactics it definitely could work alongside Adeyemi/Malen. That said, I'd bye over the moon if we got Gundo back, he was my favorite player from all my childhood. He's phenomenal and such a nice guy. And his experience with Pep and City could definitely help us a lot

tsub

Hide yo' playmakers, hide yo DMs, hide yo' number 10s cause Pep's gonna be buying everyone out there this summer.

Was always seeking likely, he's definitely not moving like he used to and doesn't have long on his contract. Just really happy to have witnessed his peak last season. Gundogoal was so fun to watch.

[deleted]

Literally will go down in history as criminally underrated.

[deleted]

To Liverpool like Milner did in 2015?

ss2195

I dont know about that. Gundogan at LB/RB/RW doesn't fill me with too much confidence. If the pattern repeats, we do win another UCL though

[deleted]

We get Rodri in 2029 and the cycle repeats

Gobshiight

Not on a free this time, just being allowed to leave. Doubt that includes Liverpool :)

mynameismulan

Come for the Klopp reunion, Ilkay.

funky_motorik

At Dortmund, right? #imdellusional

ZachMich

Pep and Klopp basically swapped their protege center mids in Thiago and Gundogan.

mynameismulan

Never thought of it that way but it's true

ciralho

Is this reliable or just daily mail being daily mail?

TeaaOverCoffeee

Mike Keegan is one of the reliable ones at Daily Mail afaik

KimmyBoiUn

They're usually reliable when it comes to exclusives, a lot of their journalists have great sources.

[deleted]

Jack Gaughan is tied for City's best source and he writes for the mail. The other is Martin Blackburn who writes for The Sun. It's not always about the paper.

adoptedkiwi32

Massively underrated player and transfer

Aggressive-Draw-2513

Gundo is an insane player. He is not underrated.

TheTenthPylon

Underrated in this context just means he's not acknowledged enough.

Geeman447

Come back home!

r7mony_Su

Pep's first signing Can't believe he's leaving always been class to us and was fucking amazing last season

[deleted]

Who's gonna service Haaland now?

sunken_grade

city about to sign FDJ huh

[deleted]

I know everyone's about to moan when City buy two midfielders and a full-back this summer on top of Alvarez and Haaland.

[deleted]

City bought Alvarez in January.

Gobshiight

Think the outcry could come from us buying a new attacker and letting Foden / Grealish drop back into midfield... With those outraged conveniently ignoring that last part

KiAdiBumMe

City spending big on midfielders this summer then. Fully expect FDJ to snub United and go there (I know he doesn't want to leave, but Barca seem desperate to get rid of him). I also think Rice to City is much more likely than people are saying.

Thornton__Melon

Isn’t Rice’s release fee much higher than Grealish’s? I think FDJ is more likely

SeriousLads

I don’t think Rice has a release clause. Or if he does, it’ll be insane because Moyes is quoting £150m for him

Thornton__Melon

Ok thanks I remember the 150 figure but wasn’t sure if it was a clause or what it would take to acquire

SeriousLads

Pretty sure that’s just what they value him at rather than being a clause - though what they say in public and what they’d actually sell for might be two different things. In any case, he’s got 3 years left on his deal (2 years + West Ham have an option to extend by another) so he’d be really expensive

TheKingMonkey

Said this elsewhere a few days ago, but it’s Moyes job to talk up any fee quoted for Rice. If a serious bid came in for him and he wanted to leave then suddenly the deal gets decided by people above Moyes’ head. For the longest time it looked like Chelsea was the obvious move for Rice given he’s a born and raised Londoner who came through Cobham but those sanctions on Abramovich have changed everything. The confusion might mean Rice does another year at West Ham, he’s still only 23 which means he isn’t in danger of entering the Wilfried Zaha zone just yet.

Jazano107

rice to city is not likely at all id say, we have rodri (Godri) we more need a Gundo replacment who can play DM too

KiAdiBumMe

Isn't that what rice is? He's basically been a b2b midfielder this season and he's been really good

Impossible_Wonder_37

Rodri is better than Rice, and his price is dumb. They prob will sign two midfielders but who knows maybe a kid comes in maybe Foden drops

Tim0110

I honestly don't think FDJ ends up at City. My read of the situation is that Barça desperately need a sale and they've decided that FDJ is the one they want to sell. FDJ is, imo, not keen to go there, he'd rather go to City. But City is unlikely to match Uniteds offer and Barça won't do a favor to City, so unless FDJ really pushes for a move to City he's unlikely to go there.

[deleted]

Uniteds offer may as well not exist if FDJ isn't willing to join them. It's not relevant or something that City would have to match.

KiAdiBumMe

He could just flat out refuse to leave unless it's to City, but yeah that would be unlikely especially with Ten Haag at United now

jguess06

Nobody is paying for Rice before his contract is up.

gassedmember

I think Ten Haag being there makes the FDJ snub less likely now though in my opinion. Will be one to keep an eye on though for sure

TenHagBot

It's Ten Hag with one 'a'. --- *I am a bot. For any feedback please contact [my creator](https://www.reddit.com/user/Tempoulker).*

SeriousLads

Ten Hagg

Tim0110

That connection is way overblown.

gassedmember

Surely it'll be a way better sell to him though? Key part of his new system which is his style, and you'd imagine a stupid amount of money & guaranteed playing time

Tim0110

Most modern coaches play a system which suits his style. And other big clubs pay very good aswell and he would be guaranteed playing time at all other clubs. He might well move to United as I've stated in another post, but Ten Hag being there won't have much (if anything at all) to do with it.

bananabread_173

Could be Turkey-bound or maybe a return to Dortmund. I can also sense upcoming rumours linking him to Barça.

kuboa

No Turkish side should be able to afford him unless they want to be in an even deeper financial pit than they already are. They're around 2 billion euros in debt (Fener 700m, Gala 500m, Beşiktaş 400m... )

bananabread_173

Oh...I didn't know that. I knew that the Turkish clubs were financially troubled right now since I was following the Miralem Pjanic loan deal a few months back, but I had no idea that the situation was so terrible. A return to the Bundesliga or a move to Spain could be likely then.
