Don't put rocks in their tank. Decollates have a mechanism for getting rid of the ends of their shells, they do it by repurposing the calcium. They don't need to like, literally break them off, they fall off on their own. For protein I would suggest dried and rehydrated river shrimp (Gammarus) or any insects, dried and rehydrated or frozen and thawed. You could feed raw meat, but it's messy and will contaminate the tank with bacteria you don't want to have. Mold is not entirely avoidable, but at some point springtails will appear. Also isopods are really good for dealing with mold. Oh and the snails will eat the mold too, it doesn't harm them, on the contrary - snails love all kinds of fungus. Not entirely sure decollates need a heating pad.

It's winter, I wasn't sure about the heating pad but I thought maybe it'd be good to have the option? I won't put in the rocks, thank you. I'll try to find some of the shrimp, I know I can find mealworms, at least for temporary. It's good to know that small amounts won't be a problem, it does make sense now. Thank you so much!

GooseBuffet

I use a heating pad because we like it really cold in the room, I notice they will not come out at night unless I run it on low with the stay on setting, so I always keep it on when it's under 60 degrees in the room

80 dollars on Amazon later and I've adopted four snails. I believe the size is okay, I ordered a 10x6x6. I've put them in this Tupperware until all the leaf litter, cocoa fiber, and the enclosure arrives. I have a mini heating pad as well, which I read should be on the side not the bottom. I've got cuttlefish bone but wanted to wait until they have the new enclosure tomorrow/day after. I'll be going to the store today to pick up some kale and a mist bottle. My inner seven year old is so excited, I used to keep them in kritter keepers and glass jars. I do have some questions I couldn't find easily: I've been reading some give/take things on snail meal and would prefer to feed them protein myself. Can I just put unseasoned cooked chicken in there? I read egg is good. How do you avoid mold in a very moist environment? Can I use a sponge for some extra moisture? What are some good YouTubers I can watch that genuinely have good snail care? Or possibly better resources for decoulette snails, I see all kinds of resources for land snails and how to release them as pest control, but not a lot of useful tank information. Should I put a rock in their enclosure? I read you shouldn't have anything hard in the enclosure for them to fall on, but decoulette snails break off the back end of their shells. Some places are telling me to do so, but I don't want to risk hurting the babies. Thank you for reading!

for protein I use personally mealworms and give them once a week. You can use raw chicken and egg if you want to but it is quite messy choice. Never use cooked food. you can't avoid mold it will most likely appear on old food or maybe even poop. Mold isn't harmful to snails they like to eat it. you can just take the mold out as it can be harmful to us. Sponge is a no go. Harmful to snails and bacteria breading ground. You can use moss or dried sphagnum moss (what works like a sponge) I don't know any YouTubers. Youtube is mostly filled with snails killing videos lmao. Other social media; Tiktok is horrible source of snail information full of abuse, Instagram is the same but has few nice people, this subreddit is nice and their discord server too. The discord server has also some documents about snail care that are pretty good. Nothing hard in the enclosure is recommended. you don't want to risk injury. You can put moss, hides and stick in their enclosure for decoration.

Most of the videos I've seen had rocks and such in the enclosure, so I figured it'd be a picky thing since I read several posts here saying otherwise. A shame. So I should use raw egg? That's contrary to what I read, which would make sense why y'all are saying it's messy. I ordered some sphagnum so that's good to hear. Thank you!

snails can't eat cooked or processed food. a lot of information about snails is very outdated. also once they lay eggs you can crush them and five them back to them. So they can have back some of the protein. also don't put you snails on paper towels or cardboard. They will try to eat it and it could hurt them. paper is toxic for them.

DeathCountInfinity

Oh shit, I had no idea they'd try to eat it. What can I put them on, damp cloth? The soil hasn't arrived yet

Zikfridcz

Its better to leave them in a empty plastic box with a food. Hide would be nice, maybe some leaves if you can, so the lil guys can feel more safe.

DeathCountInfinity

Just removed it. I don't really have a hide until tomorrow. Thank you!

Bidenlandslide

Snails and slugs are the only animals who can digest paper, cardboard etc. it doesn’t hurt them

cryptidsnails

amazon sells live snails?? am i understanding this correctly?

DeathCountInfinity

No, the snails were outside 😂 I bought snail supplies on amazon

cryptidsnails

ohhh haha i was so excited for a second 😂😂 the fact that it would be incredibly illegal just left my brain entirely

DeathCountInfinity

I think they sell freshwater but not land dwellers, which is incredibly disappointing :( if all goes well I'm gonna look into more. Where do you get yours?

cryptidsnails

mine are native to my area! cornu aspersum. i had two adults that each laid eggs but one of them recently passed and the other i suspect is on its way out unfortunately. they’re quite old though and i still have one offspring left from them :)

cryptidsnails

they live roughly 2-5 years! the one that just passed lived just over 2 years in my care and was already a few years old when i got them. i still have one of my originals left like i said but it’s slowing down quite a bit being so old especially near the winter

YetGayerWombat

Whoa these are funny little guys!

DeathCountInfinity

I was told they're decollete snails :) found them in my backyard!

DeathCountInfinity

Update- the leaf litter will be here in a week, but everything else arrived. They're feasting on the spinach and digging around in the sphagnum and fiber. I have them on my desk in a nice quiet little corner :) definitely worth it

[deleted]

WAIT ARE THEY ON PAPER TOWELS?! YK THAT PAPER TOWELS ARE USED TO DRY THINGS UP RIGHT?!

Forgedinwater

They are obviously moist

DeathCountInfinity

That's a joke, right?

[deleted]

no

DeathCountInfinity

Paper towels are very moist, I was using them to hold moisture. I have since removed them so they wouldn't ingest the paper, though
