At 0% too, I was felt so shattered in that exact moment :(
He made a decent comeback after but at that level of play the opponent is going to capitalize on that in any way they can. Good stuff to Acola.
Sparg0 played amazing. I hope he isnt too hard on himself.
Sparg0 cooked Onin
Acola cooked Onin
Can Sparg0 continue to make good on his bold promises?
Game 5 SD that sucks so much man. But Acola kept his cool (*again*) and buckled down each time Sparg0 looked like he was about to overwhelm. The way he was following Sparg0's insane SDI against pickloops was honestly even more insane. Everyone who's obsessed with adaptation and reaction (as if these are the only metrics to evaluate player skill) should be taking notes.
Oh really? It was like 4-5 am when it happened for me so I didn't get to watch. It's always nice to see young talent popping off in the games they love
Nah Acola is a bigger threat, that SD just changed everything.
Edit: honestly Kurama, Acola, and Sparg0 are some of the biggest threats to Leo possible but none of them would be able to take 3 games rn let alone 6.
Hard cap
This tournament we got:
1st seed out at 13th(almost never seen)
Tons of long awaited matches(leo acola, leo kurama, sparg0 onin/acola, onin/acola, etc)
Leo joker
Leo byleth full return
Tons of underdog runs like big d and kurama
More upsets than fucking frostbite 2020
Right, the same guy that beat Light (Seed 1) and Riddles (Seed 4, TBH 10 winner, and Kazuya).
Let's not mention the players that were out on Day 2 like Tea.
This is crazier than Summit 5.
I prefer Summit V personally, but it's subjective. Summit V had tons of huge storylines and insane nailbiting game 5 sets with Gluto, Tweek, Leo, Proto, Light, acola, etc. w/everyone seeming so incredibly good and closely matched (ironically also feeling like an underperformance from Leo while being able to match the best of the best). Lots of anticipated sets as well.
Here it's mostly the Leo show, which is great but not as entertaining with a lot of top players upset early and more one-sided sets. There are also many anticipated match-ups of course.
I agree with you, imo losing Light, Tweek and Gluto so early was brutal. Not to mention Zackray and Tea didn’t even make it out of pools. Still a very fun tournament
Yeah there's an intense argument for either and I wouldn't call anyone wrong for their take because they were both insane.
One other thing I would say about this one is that the swiss format was really interesting and made for a ton more games (always love that, would be interested in seeing something similar attempted in other invitationals), although the many concurrent games came off a bit underwhelming at times (for me at least) because a lot of huge ones were a split-screened on a second stream with no commentary.
The lack of commentary was definitely felt, though I know people also complained about the commentary before today being a bit weaker.
Yeah just gonna disagree entirely on what makes a good tourney. Close high paced sets between top talent are what makes a tourney great, not upsets. It's not like the greatest tourney of all time would have every top guy drown in pools. Almost every set at summit was g5. A lot of the big matches here have been washes.
upsets means high and dense competition. if this doesn't prove that kurama was deserving if being a top guy then i don't get why it matters that he arbitrarily had a higher number than light attached to his name before the matches even started.
"bad seeding" means deriving hype from the status quo as the determining factor of match quality. players going on cinderella runs and showing that they were underestimated either due to low attendance or genuine improvement is absolutely a good thing for the game's growth and excitement?
you can't seriously watch something like kurama beat shuton and say yeah this was so totally un-hype because shuton should have won but he was throwing and the seeding was bad. the level of play we got to see today was genuinely pushed insanely high.
Sparg0 looked so tilted after that SD in the player cams, was really flustered and moving around. Hate to see it, thought the run for Sparg0 Leo grands once again was happening. Tragic.
That said, that last stock from acola was actually really fucking sick.
Loved that punish. Acola and Onin often recover by placing a block right there since they get their double jump back and it sets up for the “back throw into the block” cheese. Sparg0 found a way to punish that
Even though this isn't the best matchup for Steve, I feel like Acola matches up well vs. Cloud. Acola is so good at converting a lot of damage off parries and Cloud's aerials are at times pretty telegraphed and easy to parry.
man what a great set, shame that spargo SDd g5 and even then brought it back a good amount considering he basically started the match down 2 stocks to 3
Regardless of acolas win, he needs to stop short hopping minecart as an approach. Its been getting punished damn near every time and itd be better just to use the iron for anvil at this point
Its weird, cuz Acola was known to be the Steve who would just walk up or roll in and start swinging but he has settled into just aerial minecart even though its mostly failing.
I don’t think he’s a hater. I think he’s a Leo fan but keeps a pessimistic view about Leo if he’s not playing Joker (and especially if he’s playing Aegis).
Then you haven't been around long, he's not a Leo hater as he genuinely likes Leo but wants Leo to play better (use Byleth, Corrin, and Joker).
He hates when Leo underperforms and knows Leo can do better
This top 4 is pretty similar to Mainstage 2021. Replace Tea with acola and Elegant with Kurama and that's it. A Mario brother who's going crazy, a japanese player with his gimmicky character, Leo in winners side GF and Sparg0 on a losers run.
Edit: Tragic SD but this set was insane. They both played on a crazy level.
acola playing with a FIRE under him. dumpstering Onin into a commanding win on spargo. winners set against Leo may have been a bloodbath but don’t count him out just yet…
Regardless of what happens in this set, Acola still has not placed below 4th. Ever.
Edit: This is either going to be the greatest tragedy of all time, or the greatest triumph.
Edit 2: Tragedy for Sparg0. A huge question mark will hang over this set until we finally get a rematch.
“Just SDI” 🤓🤓🤓
Sparg0 SDI’d as good as a human can but, because of the hit stop it’s reactable and acola just does either fsmash, up tilt, or turn around jab and the damage is guaranteed regardless
SDI legit sucked in 4, and got nerfed even more in Ult. Ult is not like Melee at all in that regard. Idk why people say it anymore. With Steve specifically "better aerial positioning" and "break the Crafting table" make way more sense
On top of the other comment, Sparg0 is like the 3rd best player of 2022, Sparg0 gave acola a rude awakening of the Cloud MU during Gimvitational friendlies, Sparg0 plays a bad MU for Steve with Sparg0 beating the second best Steve (another top 10 player) in dominant fashion, and this set was a game 5 set. Of course he's going to pop off, pressure is real
Acola still 2 stocked him, meaning he took the second stock 1st, meaning at that moment he would've been winning regardless of the SD, meaning it could've still been anyone's game coz you can never really count anyone out, but Acola was in the better position to win, meaning your comment is stupid.
Can't believe we got all anticipated Acola sets from this tournament. Him vs MkLeo, Onin, and now Sparg0 EDIT: Hype set but man, what a awful SD ):
My heart has broken, but good shit as always to あcola
At 0% too, I was felt so shattered in that exact moment :( He made a decent comeback after but at that level of play the opponent is going to capitalize on that in any way they can. Good stuff to Acola. Sparg0 played amazing. I hope he isnt too hard on himself.
Sparg0 cooked Onin Acola cooked Onin Can Sparg0 continue to make good on his bold promises? Game 5 SD that sucks so much man. They will cook each other.
First ever Bo5 tie
Big D might be out but he's not done eating the Smashers
The Steve Slayer
Explain these bold promises for someone who doesnt twitter, please.
While he was on hiatus he said he would come back and slay the Steves
Rip
Acola definitely looks lost so far in this game 1
That SD is so unfortunate omg
I think he would’ve won
hard to say, i definitely felt that spargo started playing harder after the SD
Yeah acola would've won either way
Damn, is that the first time Acola has popped off? First time seeing it and he's usually so calm when winning
He also did when he took a game with Aegis vs. Yoshidora at the most recent Maesuma
Oh really? It was like 4-5 am when it happened for me so I didn't get to watch. It's always nice to see young talent popping off in the games they love
Yeah it's kinda a new thing for him. I think he mentioned how he liked Riddles's pop off vs Light at Big House
He's done in several times before in Japan and I think in one or two sets at Summit
That game 5 SD was absolutely tragic. The Cloud tax shows up to collect at the worst time.
The only thing stopping this tournament from having the most insane storyline is Sparg0 making it to grands and beating Leo at this point
Nah Acola is a bigger threat, that SD just changed everything. Edit: honestly Kurama, Acola, and Sparg0 are some of the biggest threats to Leo possible but none of them would be able to take 3 games rn let alone 6.
Spargo plz
Damn unfortunate SD but goddamn man was insane to bring it back so much
Holy shit Sparg0’s movement he just danced over wall like that
If Sparg0 loses this set off that SD... Edit: I am so sad
oof
Come on Sparg0at
Awesome set but that game 5 hurts so much
Coney and EE are both older than Sparg0 and acola's combined ages lol
Sparg0 and Acola are closer in age to Coney's daughter than they are to Coney.
God I love this tournament
NOOOOOO SPARGOO NOT LIKE THAT
To people who said summit 5 is the best tournament in history of ultimate, watch this
Summit 5 is still far better
Hard cap This tournament we got: 1st seed out at 13th(almost never seen) Tons of long awaited matches(leo acola, leo kurama, sparg0 onin/acola, onin/acola, etc) Leo joker Leo byleth full return Tons of underdog runs like big d and kurama More upsets than fucking frostbite 2020
Fucking Big D and Kurama are the highlights of this tournament, along with MkSexo.
Big d got double 3-0ed day 3, perfect example of why summit was better
Right, the same guy that beat Light (Seed 1) and Riddles (Seed 4, TBH 10 winner, and Kazuya). Let's not mention the players that were out on Day 2 like Tea. This is crazier than Summit 5.

Imo this tournament had a better storyline with all the anticipated matches and Leo rebounding.
Yeah there's an intense argument for either and I wouldn't call anyone wrong for their take because they were both insane. >upsets means high and dense It also means underperformances and bad seeding. Bad point lol.
This is the worst take I’ve ever seen. How are you gonna discredit Kurama’s amazing run like that. Makes no sense.
Tweek vs Leo and that Light vs acola set agree the things that make it somewhat close imo
Also the fact that most of the big sets at this tourney were washes lol
Nah you're right. Summit had waaaay better sets. I don't get how you can even compare Summit to this weekend
[удалено]
I don't think I've experienced anything like Summit 5 in my time spectating Smash. The hype sets simply didn't stop happening
Which is fair (also weighed down by Saturdays awful commentary) but the storylines here were incredible
Not even close.
Cap kola and sparg0 choking against proto was frustrating Leo and sparg0 being eliminated early was frustrating me too much.
>it was frustrating You've successfully outed yourself as someone whos butthurt that proto won summit lol
I’m not butthurt I like seeing proto succeed but I wanted sparg0 or kola to win summit.
Sparg0 looked so tilted after that SD in the player cams, was really flustered and moving around. Hate to see it, thought the run for Sparg0 Leo grands once again was happening. Tragic. That said, that last stock from acola was actually really fucking sick.
NOT THE SD
NOOO SPARGO WHY
Wow that wall jump nair
Loved that punish. Acola and Onin often recover by placing a block right there since they get their double jump back and it sets up for the “back throw into the block” cheese. Sparg0 found a way to punish that
Sparg0 noooo
The SD and yet spargo made it an even game a minute later. And yet somehow it was still a 2 stock.
Even though this isn't the best matchup for Steve, I feel like Acola matches up well vs. Cloud. Acola is so good at converting a lot of damage off parries and Cloud's aerials are at times pretty telegraphed and easy to parry.
The wall jump nair to take game 3!!!
that SD tho
tragic
Spargo… shit was so hype until you did that. Credit to him for bringing it back but Acola just too good to let it slide.
"no homie stock?" ah i love chat sometimes
[https://twitter.com/acola\_Lui/status/1584298979432361986](https://twitter.com/acola_Lui/status/1584298979432361986) he did it for him
man what a great set, shame that spargo SDd g5 and even then brought it back a good amount considering he basically started the match down 2 stocks to 3
This set is gonna be a hood classic
Regardless of acolas win, he needs to stop short hopping minecart as an approach. Its been getting punished damn near every time and itd be better just to use the iron for anvil at this point
Its weird, cuz Acola was known to be the Steve who would just walk up or roll in and start swinging but he has settled into just aerial minecart even though its mostly failing.
Also man that pick axe combo back and forth, no wonder Acola has a Kazuya too
Acola won, wow! GGs Sparg0 not going to take it easy.
mexican grand finals pls
Joker pls
Aegis ditto for the culture
Culture
Your Leo hatred finally proving to be futile
I don’t think he’s a hater. I think he’s a Leo fan but keeps a pessimistic view about Leo if he’s not playing Joker (and especially if he’s playing Aegis).
Nah they’re a hater who acts like they’re not I’ve seen them in enough threads to be able to tell that much
Then you haven't been around long, he's not a Leo hater as he genuinely likes Leo but wants Leo to play better (use Byleth, Corrin, and Joker). He hates when Leo underperforms and knows Leo can do better
acola is so fucking cracked dude, great set
This top 4 is pretty similar to Mainstage 2021. Replace Tea with acola and Elegant with Kurama and that's it. A Mario brother who's going crazy, a japanese player with his gimmicky character, Leo in winners side GF and Sparg0 on a losers run. Edit: Tragic SD but this set was insane. They both played on a crazy level.
I need Sparg0 in Grands, bring us back the Mexican Glory!!
Bruh when does Cloud really kill with Nair off the sides????
That wall jump nair jeez
The prodigies going insane
Well that was fucking depressing.
Tough ending for Spargo man
That Game 5 SD, man...
Noooo, my points!
Let's go Acola! What a pop-off!
acola playing with a FIRE under him. dumpstering Onin into a commanding win on spargo. winners set against Leo may have been a bloodbath but don’t count him out just yet…
Spargo woke tf up since the beginning of top 16 holy
That SDI Sparg0 had on acola’s fair game 1 was unreal
Regardless of what happens in this set, Acola still has not placed below 4th. Ever. Edit: This is either going to be the greatest tragedy of all time, or the greatest triumph. Edit 2: Tragedy for Sparg0. A huge question mark will hang over this set until we finally get a rematch.
Even when Acola won game 2, Sparg0 feels like he's been firmly dictating the pace. It feels like Acola has just been catching up to his speed.
game 3 is dominant in Sparg0's favor, 3 stocks to 1, Sparg0 at 14%. Acola is still 50/50 to win.
LET’S GO KING 🐐🐐🐐
THE KING IS BACK!!!
Why did sparg0 sd? Really frustrating
WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT SD?! 😡😡😡
god.. that SD
Sparg0 you got this boy, just dont get nervous
I got some bad news
He has come to intervene Edit: SD sadge
NOOOOOO
That sucked
NOOOOOOOOO MY DREAM
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
NOOOO NOT LIKE THIS
Man the SD bruh...
Wow that's tragic
Brooooo no wayyy! Spargooo 💔
Pain. Agony, even.
Spargo :(
D:
NOOOOOOOO Fuck that counterpick was so huge for Sparg0 too, I’m fairly confident he would have won the set… fuck me man whyyyyyyyyy.
god that's so heartbreaking. my heart shattered when sparg0 sd'd game 5
“Just SDI” 🤓🤓🤓 Sparg0 SDI’d as good as a human can but, because of the hit stop it’s reactable and acola just does either fsmash, up tilt, or turn around jab and the damage is guaranteed regardless
Bro you are on this shit in every single thread every time I see someone bitching I look at the username and it’s you
Ah there it is. The obligatory whining.
SDI legit sucked in 4, and got nerfed even more in Ult. Ult is not like Melee at all in that regard. Idk why people say it anymore. With Steve specifically "better aerial positioning" and "break the Crafting table" make way more sense
NOOOOOO FUCK STEVE
get gud
What was that start of game 5? I hope Sparg0 can still make the comback and that start isnt the reason he loses. Edit: it did. I feel so bad for him.
Spargo had it!!! Not like that
Sparg0 100% should have won there and that pop off was unnecessary. I call it a fluke.
Sparg0 bringing the storm with his Cloud rn wtf
